E D I T O R I A L
We are all tested in various ways by Allah in this world. Allah states, Be
sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in
goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who
patiently persevere. (2: 155)
Trials in My Life 4
At work, we are sometimes denied a promotion, treated unfairly, or even
fired. At home, our children may be a test for us especially in this world.
Some of us may go through a divorce. Others may find that they have an
illness that is very challenging. Our dear members of our family or friends
may die. At times like this many of us fall into despair. It is important during
these times not to lose hope, but rather to exercise sabr or patience. As
Allah Himself says in the Qur’an, On no soul does Allah Place a burden
greater than it can bear. (Al-Baqarah 2:286)
‘Urwah Ibn Al Zubair had an operation, and the doctor amputated his leg.
One friend came to visit him. ‘Urwah thought that the friend came to pacify
him for the loss of his leg. So ‘Urwah told the visitor: If you came to give
me condolence for the loss of my leg, I already submitted to Allah with
patience to reward me for its loss. The guest told him, I came to inform you
that your son fell down in a stable, and the animals stepped over him, and he
died one hour ago. ‘Urwah said: O Allah! You took one child, and left
me many…You took one organ from my body, and left me many
organs…O Allah! You tested me with my body, and you were kind to
leave me with good health. You tested me with the loss of my son, but
you were kind in leaving me the rest of my children.
The rewards of patience are many - such as the patient person is blessed by
Allah , He will let him enter paradise with His Mercy and a patient person
will be guided by Allah in this world until he meets Him on the Day of
Judgement.
Anyone suffering from an illness should remain patient, for there is no reward
better or more enriching than that reserved for those who endure in patience.
Suhaib ibn Sinan narrated that the Prophet said: “How remarkable is the
case of the believer! There is good for him in everything, but this is not the
case for anyone except for the believer. When the believer receives any
good, he is thankful to Allah , and gets a reward. And when some
misfortune befalls him, he endures it patiently, for which he is (also)
rewarded.”
Cancer
C
Led me to my
reator
This is an interesting account of a true story of Layla Al Helw, a
Moroccan woman who had been afflicted by cancer, and the doctors
were completely helpless to cure her. The best specialists of Europe
had no hope for her recovery - even Layla herself lost all hope - but
Allah had the solution....
Layla says:
"9 years ago I found out that I had cancer, even the mention of the
word cancer would scare me, let alone be infected by it!".. My faith in
Allah was very weak. I had completely drifted away from the
remembrance of Allah , and I believed that one's beauty and health
shall remain forever.. I never imagined I would be afflicted with
cancer. Hence, when I found out, I was in total shock, seeking some
place to run and hide. but, where? where in the world could I can
escape from this disease? I even contemplated suicide! but..I was
deeply in love with my husband and my children. Unfortunately, I did
not think of Allah's punishment if I committed such a sin, because, as
I told you, I was far from remembering
Allah. However, it was of Allah's will that
this disease was the reason for my
guidance and the means for the guidance
for many others.
I went to Belgium, and visited many
doctors, they told my husband that I would
have to have my b reast s remo ved,
thereafter go on certain medication which would cause my hair to fall
and make my eye lashes and eyebrows disappear. Also causing my
nails and teeth to fall. I completely refused this solution."I would
rather die than lose my beauty," I requested the doctors to prescribe
for me another medication with fewer side effects, which they did so.
I went back to Morocco.. I used the medication and it did not have
any side effects, this made me so happy.. I thought; maybe the
doctors were wrong and I didn't have cancer. However, six months
later, I started losing weight quickly, my colour started to change and
I had continuous pains.. My Moroccan doctor advised me to return
back to Belgium.
On return to Belgium, the doctors told my husband that the disease
had now spread all over my body and that my lungs were completely
infected. They made it clear that nothing more could be done and we
must prepare for the worst.
Finally, we decided that the infected areas of the upper part of my
body be removed and also go on to the medication which the doctors
had prescribed earlier. Then one day, my husband thought of
something that we had always forgotten, something which was sadly
always too far away from our thoughts. Allah Almighty inspired my
husband to take me to His holy house in Makkah Mukarramah in
hope of seeking His divine help...
I began to regret all those past years I
had spent without praying and seeking
Allah's help... I said: "O' Lord, the
doctors were disabled to cure me...
(You) have the cure for every disease..
We left Paris proclaiming: "Allahu Akbar, La Ilaha Illa Allah (Allah is
the Greatest, No God but Allah)..." I was very happy and excited as
this was to be my first visit to the Holy House of Allah and actually
see the "Kabah" with my very own eyes.. I even had to buy a copy of
the Qur'an from Paris as I did not even have one of my own.
On reaching Makkah I entered the Holy Haram and experienced my
first sighting of the blessed Kabah, I Overwhelmed with joy and
happiness I began to cry excessively, being in the very place which
had been the place of worship of the prophets, seeing the multitude
of Muslims and the Majesty, the Bounty and the sheer Splendour of
my Lord, Allah...!
I began to regret all those past years I had spent without praying and
seeking Allah's help... I said: "O' Lord, the doctors were disabled to
cure me... (You) have the cure for every disease.. All the doors are
locked in front of me.. I have nowhere to go except to Your door, so
please.. please O’ Allah don't close Your
door on me..." I kept on praying to Allah
and making Du'aa while I was going around
the Kabah.. I asked Him not to leave me in
despair or return me empty handed..
As I mentioned earlier, I was completely
ignorant regarding my Deen, so I went to
the scholars and asked them to guide me to small books and
supplications that could be read easily.. They advised me to read as
much of the Qur'an as I could, engage myself in Dhikr and send
abundant Durood.. They also advised me to drink plenty of Zam Zam
water,
In the Haram I felt very peaceful..I then asked my husband to allow
me to stay in the "Haram" all the time. He gave me permission. In the
holy mosque, there were some Egyptian and Turkish sisters besides
me, who saw me crying a lot.. They asked me about the reason.. I
told them that I had come to the holy house of Allah and I never
thought I would love it so much! I also told them that I had cancer..
They kept besides me all the time...... During this time, we rarely
slept.. we ate very little food.. but we drank a lot of "Zam Zam"
water.. And as the prophet said, "Zam Zam water fulfils the
purpose it is drank for.” If it is drank with the intention of being cured,
Allah shall cure you. Thus, we occupied ourselves in performing
Tawaf and reading the Qur'an.
When I first came to the holy house of Allah I was very thin, and the
upper part of my body was covered with swells, blood and pus.. The
sisters kept on begging me to wash the upper part of my body with
Zam Zam water.. but I was very afraid to even touch the area. I was
afraid to remember my illness as it may upset me and take my mind
away from the remembrance of Allah,
On the fifth day, my friends insisted that I should go
over my whole body with Zam Zam water.. at the
beginning I refused.. but I felt something forcing me
to do so! I slowly started to wet the parts I always
avoided, over my chest then stopped, then I felt
something forcing me again.. I hesitated... and on
the third turn, I forced my hand to the upper part of
my body and finally went over the affected areas!
Something unbelievable happened.. Subhanallah!
there were no swells.. no blood.. no pus!!! I couldn't
believe it.. I went over with my hand again, and it
was true! Yes it was true!.. I was in total shock!! But I
remembered that Allah is capable of doing all things..
My friends shouted: Allahu Akbar.. Allahu Akbar!!! I ran to my
husband in the hotel... and said: "Look at Allah's Mercy!" I told him of
what had happened and he couldn't believe it!!.. He cried and cried..
He said: "Do you know that the doctors swore that you shall die
within a period of three weeks?.." I said: all fate is within the Hands
and Will of Allah no one knows what the future is holding for us
except for Him ..
We stayed in the holy house of Allah for one more week thanking
Allah for His un-countable bounties.. We then went to the
prophet's mosque in Madinah, thereafter, travelled back to France..
In France, the doctors were surprised..!!! "Are you the same person!,
they asked me.." I was very proud to say: YES!! .. and this is my
husband.. we have returned to Allah.. and I now fear no-one but
Allah .. fate is from Him.. They said that this was a very strange
case. They re-examined me and Alhamdulillah they found nothing!
I went and bought the "Seerah" (biography) of the Prophet and his
companions (may Allah be pleased with them).. I read them and I
cried a lot.. I cried, as I was regretting all what I had done in the past.
I missed the love of Allah and His Prophet … Being a servant of
My Lord, I should have loved Him with all my heart and submitted
myself to Him, instead I had wasted all these years, on meaningless
things of this world...
I ask Allah to forgive me, my husband and all Muslims... and to
accept me as His sincere servant.
Submitted by a Reader
Many people have experienced wondrous benefits of the Zam
Zam – they have drunk it with the intention of fulfilling some
need such as healing from sickness or being freed from
poverty and distress, and Allah fulfilled these hopes. Zam Zam
water is also blessed and drinking it is a sign of Imaan (faith).
Q. Mention some virtues of Zam Zam Water?
A. * Zam Zam water is from Jannah (paradise).
* Zam Zam is the best water on earth.
* Zam Zam is a cure for every sickness.
* Ibn Abbas narrates that Prophet said: “The best water on the
surface of this world is Zam Zam. In it is food for the hungry and cure for
the sick.” (Tabarani)
* Prophet used to fill Zam Zam in water bags and sprinkle over the ill
and give them to drink.
* The blessed saliva of Prophet is mixed in Zam Zam. Ibn Abbas
reports that Prophet came to the well of Zam Zam so we drew out a
bucket of water. Prophet drank some
water and spat out some back in the
bucket. We poured the bucket back into
the well. (Ahmad)
Q. With what intention should Zam
Zam be consumed?
A. According to a Hadeeth, with whatever
intention the water of Zam Zam is
consumed, it will be attained. If you drink
it to be cured of a disease, Allah will cure
you. If you drink it for protection, Allah will
grant you protection (against anything
ZAM ZAM
such as an enemy, disease etc.). If you
drink it to quench your thirst, it will be
quenched. Therefore one should make Du’aa and drink it with the
intention that Allah will accept his/her Du,aas due to the blessings of
Zam Zam.
Q. Is it O.K. to put Zam Zam water on the body by pouring?

Drink it facing the Qiblah
Reciting Bismillah
Drinking in 3 sips
A. It is permissible to apply Zam Zam water on one’s body. In pouring, the
Zam Zam may get wasted.
Q. Is it permissible for non-muslim to consume the Zam Zam water?
A. It is permissible for non-Muslims to drink of it. Up to one year after the
conquest of Makkah Mukarramah, non-Muslims were permitted to go for
THE WELL
OF
Hajj and Umrah. It is obvious that they too used to drink Zam Zam water.
(Kitabul Fatawa 4/82)
One should explain to them that this is sacred water hence it should be
respected and used accordingly.
Q. Can we dilute Zam Zam water with normal tap water to make extra
Zam Zam water? Can this be done on a continuous basis e.g. you
have a bottle of Zam Zam water and as it gets nearly empty, you refill
it with normal tap water. This is done over and over again.
A. Yes it can be diluted. Insha'Allah by adding other water to Zam Zam the
blessings of Zam Zam will remain and not decrease. To support this, the
narration of Nasa’I is cited that some people came to Prophet . Prophet
gave them the left over water of His
Wudhu and told them that when it is
almost finish then add other water to it.
The manner of drinking Zam Zam is to:

A narration in Nasai states that a
delegation asked the Prophet : O
Prophet of Allah we live in a far off
land, the heat is also extreme, the water
will evaporate. Prophet replied: add
water to it. It will only increase in good
(i.e. the blessed water will increase the
added water in its blessings). (Malfoozat
Faqihul Ummah Pg. 15 Maktabah
Make the intention of what you want to gain and drink to your fill
Recite the du’aa of drinking Zam Zam
Everything that happens is from Almighty Allah and only from
Him. Human beings, whilst having the will power to do things, have
no power to change the outcome or the end result. It is mentioned in
the Holy Qur’an: “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah
has ordained for us.” [9:11] The Prophet expressed this very
same sentiment in the following manner: “Whatever has befallen you
was not meant to escape you, and whatever has escaped you was
not meant to befall you.” [Tirmidhi]
You will never completely feel at ease until you firmly believe that
Allah has already pre-ordained all matters. Therefore, do not feel
remorse over that which is not in your hands. Do not think that you
could have prevented the death or sickness of someone, the
accident that happened, the imprisonment of a loved one or the fight
or argument that resulted in devastation. You could not have
prevented these things, whether you wanted to or not.
In times of ease and comfort one tends to build expectations on
individuals and institutions upon whom one can turn to in times of
need hoping that they can be one’s saviour. However, experience
has shown that those very same means upon whom one has
attached so much reliance fail to materialise in the hour of need. Not
only that, but many a times those very same ‘friends’, apart from
walking away in the midst of one’s sufferings, prove to be injurious
and detrimental to ones interest. This demonstrates the reality of all
those expectations and hopes apart from Allah, testing times define
the real from the false and the good from the bad.
If you are afflicted with trials and tribulations remember Allah, call out
His name, and ask Him for help. Place your forehead on the ground
and mention His praise, so that you can obtain true freedom. Raise
your hands in supplication, and ask of Him constantly and
abundantly. Cling to His door, have good thoughts about Him, and
wait for His help – you will then find true happiness and success.
If you remain persistent and sincere in your calling Him, you will
achieve freedom from worry and anxiety. All ropes are cut loose
save His, and all doors are shut save His. He is near; He hears all
and answers those who supplicate to Him.
Almighty Allah says: “…invoke Me, I will respond to you.” [Qur’an
– 40:60]
Remember well, if you have found Allah, then you have found
everything. And if you lose your faith in Him, then you have lost
everything!
Dealing with Trials & Tribulations
Trials and tribulations are in no way a criterion on defining success
and failure. The Prophet said: “No one was subjected to the
amount of difficulties I was subjected to.” [Tirmidhi] The underlining
criterion is by evaluating ones relationship with His Lord, Allah in all
situations. If during ones suffering, a person terminates his
relationship with his religious obligations and looses hope in Allah –
he is at a loss. On the other hand, if one in the midst of distress
holds firmly to his Deen, repents from sins and strengthens his bond
with His Creator he is the successful one.
Now consider these saying of the pious servants of Allah
regarding trials and tribulations:
Junaid Baghdadi (Allah have mercy on him) said: “Hardships are a
lamp for the divinely enlightened ones; a warning for the doubters
and a disaster for careless people.”
Ali bin Bindar (Allah have mercy on him) said: “The foundations of
this worldly abode are hardships and difficulties. Therefore, life on
earth without effort is not possible.”
Ibn Ata (Allah have mercy on him) said: The truth and falsehood of a
servant becomes manifest at the time of hardship. During good
times he remains stagnant. He refrains from thankfulness and does
not progress in worship. When he bewails his lot in hardship, he
displays his falsehood.”
Compare the following insults and difficulties which the great
Prophets (peace be upon them): were subjected to:
Prophet Ibrahim : A criminal! Burn him alive!
Prophet Musa : A mad man he is!
Prophet Isa : It is compulsory to kill him!
Maryam (peace be upon her): She is unchaste!
The scholars and saints of Islam, being the inheritors of the Prophets
were also subjected to similar trials.
Imam Abu Hanifa (peace be upon him): was imprisoned by the ruler
of the time and his food was rationed. People abused him and called
him an enemy and Shaytan of the Ummah. Open calls were made
that ‘assassinate him and you will earn more virtues than performing
seventy Jihads!’
Imam Malik (Allah have mercy on him): was whipped and dragged
in the street. He was unable to perform Salaah with Jama'ah and
even prevented by his enemies and oppressors from leaving his
house for performing Jum'ah.
Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal (Allah have mercy on him): was imprisoned
and whipped daily until he would fall down unconscious. In addition
to this, he was repeatedly smacked and spat upon.
Shah Waliyullah (Allah have mercy on him): was imprisoned and his
hand was amputated to stop him from writing. He was forced to
4
migrate and he passed away in Delhi.
As history has demonstrated in the case of those mentioned and
many others alike that, despite the apparent suffering inflicted upon
them, they were ultimately successful and their lives are admired
and their legacy lives on till this very day.
It is reported about the great saint Junaid Baghdadi (Allah have
mercy on him) that when people insulted him and criticised his work,
he would mostly remain silent, but occasionally he would say, “The
accounts are always made up at the end of the day. Lets us see,
when a sufficient space of time has passed, whether it is our work
which is remembered or the names of our critics.”
Transforming Challenges into Opportunities
Circumstances of pure evil do not exist, and in all situations one can
find goodness, benefit and reward from Allah . A believer should
always ponder and look at the other side of any tragedy or hardship.
Almighty Allah says in the Holy Qur’an: “And it may be that you
dislike a thing which is good for you and it may be that you like a
thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not
know.” [42:27]
It was this very reason that the Prophet was compelled to leave
Makkah, but rather than quit his mission, he continued it in Madinah
– the city that took its place in history with lightning speed.
An intelligent and skilful person endeavours to transform challenges
into opportunities and losses into profits; whereas, the unskilled
person aggravates his own predicament, often making two disasters
out of one.
Two brilliant poets were imprisoned - one was an optimist, the other
was a pessimist. They both squeezed their heads through the bars
of their cell windows. The optimist then stared at the stars and
laughed, while the pessimist looked at the dirt of a neighbouring road
and wept.
Now consider the response of these eminent personalities of Islam
in the face of hostilities and aggression.
Imam Abu Haneefah (Allah have mercy on him) was whipped by the
ruler of the time in the open bazaar. The whipping was so severe
that the lashes left impressions on his body - blood would flow down
his feet. On being whipped he would weep and make Du'aa
abundantly to Allah . Whilst in captivity in a foreign land, when
death drew near, the Imam fell in prostration and passed away
therein. Despite this persecution and torture he emerged as Imam
Azam – the Great Imam. His Madhab (school of Jurisprudence)
spread across the globe and his followers outnumbered everyone
else.
Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal (Allah have mercy on him) was severely
tortured and flogged and yet he emerged triumphant from that
ordeal, becoming the Imam of the Sunnah.
Imam Ibn Taiymiyah (Allah have mercy on him) was imprisoned for
36 months during which he completed reciting the Qur’an 80 times.
He would put his head on the floor in prostration from Isha until Fajr
(all night long), repeating the supplication, “O Allah! Help me to
remember You, be grateful to You and to worship You with
excellence.” During imprisonment, his books, pen and paper were
confiscated; despite this, he continued his writings with pieces of
coal - he emerged an even more accomplished scholar than he was
before.
Ibn Athir (Allah have mercy on him) became crippled, after which he
wrote Jam’i al-Usool and Al-Nihayah, two of the most famous books
in the Science of Hadith.
Mujaddid Alfi Thani (Allah have mercy on him) was imprisoned; he
continued his propagation work in prison and successfully converted
all the non-Muslim inmates to Islam.
Therefore if you are afflicted with a misfortune, look on the bright
side. If someone was to hand you a glass full of squeezed lemons,
add to it a handful of sugar. And if someone gives you a snake as a
gift, keep its precious skin and leave the rest.
Remember, eating follows hunger, drinking follows thirst, tears are
followed by a smile, fear is replaced by comfort, anxiety is
overthrown by serenity, sleep comes after restlessness, and health
takes the place of sickness. The lost will find their way, the day will
follow the night and one in difficulty will find relief.
Almighty Allah says: “Verily, with hardship, there is relief.” [Qur’an
94:6]
Remain patient, steadfast and sincere in your relation with your Lord
and await Allah’s promised relief and assistance. The following
quote very nicely articulates these sentiments:
“Life is a book with many chapters. Some tell of tragedy, others of
triumph. Some are dull and ordinary, others intense and exciting.
The key to success in life is to never stop on a difficult page, to
never quit on a tough chapter. Champions have the courage to keep
turning the pages because they know that a better chapter always
lies ahead, because with Allah all things are possible. And the last
chapter of a book is always the best.”
And our last call is that all praise is for the Lord of the worlds and
peace and blessings be upon the Master of the Messengers, his
family and his companions.
Guard Against Mishaps
Hadhrat Talaq narrates that a person came to Hadhrat Abu
Darda and said, "Your house got burnt." Hadhrat Abu Darda
said, "It didn't burn!"
Then another person came and repeated the same thing. He
again said. "It didn't burn!" Then a third person came and gave
him the same news. He said, "It didn't burn!" Then a fourth
person came and said to him, "O Abu Darda the flames rose
very high but when the fire reached your home, it got
extinguished." He said, "I knew that Allah would not do so (let
my house burn), because I have heard from the Holy Prophet
that, "Whoever recites these Kalimaat (verses) in the
morning, no mishap can reach him till the evening." (Since I
recited these Kalimaat in the morning, I was confident that my
house would not get burnt.) The Kalimaat (verses) are;
THE LAND OF
SYRIA
Zaid Ibn Thaabit Al-Ansaaree reports: “I
heard the Messenger of Allah saying:
“Behold, glad-tidings are for the lands of Ash-
Shaam! Behold, glad-tidings are for the lands
of Ash-Shaam! Behold, glad-tidings are for
the lands of Ash-Shaam!” The Sahaabah
enquired: “O Rasulullah , why is that?” He
replied: “Those are the angels of Allah
sheltering Ash-Shaam with their wings.”
Narrated Ansari by al-Tirmidhi in his Sunan.
The name ‘Ash-Shaam’ is an ancient Arabic
word, going back to Shaam, the son of
Prophet Nooh , who took the area as his
home after the flood. The land today makes
up the countries of Palestine, Syria, Jordan
and Lebanon. The offspring of Shaam ruled
in those lands from the time of Prophet Nooh
As until recent times, and they were
known for their severe way of fighting in
battle, their love for travelling and their desire
to learn. Their language remained the
universal language for seventeen centuries,
from the seventh century BC, until the
seventh century AC; and no other language
is known to have remained for such a long
time. They created an alphabet for it, which
became the basis for all languages, and they
always held on steadfastly to their language.
When Rasulullah came with the message,
they welcomed Islam with open hands and
helped the Arabs against Rome. Within a few
years, they had accepted Islam and they
adopted the Arabic language as their new
mother-tongue, in place of their ancient
language. Thus, Arabic excelled over all
other languages for many centuries.
It is well known as part of the history of Ash-
Shaam, that they warmly received ‘Umar ,
the second successor after Muhammad
Rasulullah . They gave him the title ‘Al-
Farooq’, which meant in their ancient
language ‘The Saviour’. It was for this reason
that Islam found a strong foothold in those
areas, and especially in Ash-Shaam.
After the liberation of Damascus and after it
had become a Muslim city, within 26 years it
had become the capital of the Islamic
Caliphate. The people of Ash-Shaam were
the most courageous of people when it came
to fighting in battle and whosoever remained
loyal to them would be victorious. This was
the reason behind the leadership of Banu
Umayyah, and for this reason ‘Ali said to
his followers from Persia and Iraq:
“Whosoever is successful alongside you, has
won with the most solidified foothold.” When
‘Uthmaan was martyred, and the Fitnah
(tribulations) spread like wild fire, no land was
saved except the lands of Ash-Shaam,
bearing testimony to the saying of the Noble
Prophet : “Behold! Verily Imaan will be in
Ash-Shaam when the tribulations take place.”
When Yazeed died and his son, Mu’aawiyah
the second refused to submit the
leadership, the people of Ash-Shaam and the
surrounding lands took allegiance to
‘Abdullah Ibn Az-Zubayr . When Mu’aawiyah
died and Marwaan Ibn Al-Hakam came
after him, no one remained in those lands
who did pledge allegiance to ‘Abdullah Ibn Az
-Zubayr , except for a section of Ash-
Shaam. The army of Ash-Shaam advanced
face to face with an army that was multiplied
many times in number to it near Damascus,
and the people of Ash-Shaam were
victorious. A few years later, they had all the
Islamic lands under their leadership. After
that, they started to carry out the liberation of
other places, and then their leadership
spread from west China to the middle of
France, which was the biggest country under
one rule that history had witnessed until that
time.
Many great scholars of Islam have come from
the lands of Ash-Shaam, including Jurists
and learned men of Hadeeth. Amongst them
is ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul ‘Aziz (r), who was the
seventh leader of the Muslims from Banu
Umayyah. Another great scholar is Imam
Zakariyya An-Nawawee (r), the great
compiler of Hadeeth, author of Riyaadus
Saliheen, who was from Damascus. They
also include the likes of Imam Ahmad Ibn
Hajar Al-‘Asqalaanee (r), the author of the
great commentary and explanation of Sahih
Al-Bukhari, who was from ‘Asqalaan, a place
in Palestine.
The lands of Ash-Shaam hold great
significance and value in Islam, granted to it
by Allah and His Beloved Rasul . ‘Abdullah
Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Noble Prophet
made the du’aa: “Oh Allah, grant us
blessings in our Shaam.” [Narrated by Imam
Al-Bukhari] This truly bears witness to the
holy verse in the Holy Qur’aan, when Allah
speaks about the Israa (journey) of the Noble
Prophet to Al-Quds: “Glory be The One
Who took His servant on a night journey from
the Sacred Masjid to the Furthest Masjid,
whose precincts We have blessed, so that
We may show him some of Our signs. Verily,
Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.” (Al-Israa
17:1)
The scholars have agreed that these
blessings include the entire lands of Ash-
Shaam, taken from the Hadeeth of the Noble
Prophet “Verily Allah blessed the area
between the ‘Areesh River, the Euphrates
and Palestine; and He chose Palestine
specially and sanctified it.”
Imam Abu Dawood (r) narrates that
Rasulullah said: “Indeed, the stronghold of
the Muslims on the day when the great battle
will take place is next to a city called
Damascus, which is one of the best cities of
Ash-Shaam.”
‘Abdullah Ibn Hawaalah reports that
Rasulullah said: “I saw on the night that I
was taken on the journey white pillars
resembling pearls, which were being carried
by the angels. I asked: ‘What are you
carrying?’ They replied: ‘The pillars of Islam,
which we have been commanded to place in
Ash-Shaam.’ And while I was sleeping, I saw
the pillars of The Book glowing from under
my head, and I thought that Allah had
deserted the people of the earth. I followed it
with my eyes and saw that it was a shining
light in front of me, until it was placed in Ash-
Shaam.” Then Ibn Hawaalah said: “O
Rasulullah , make my decision for me.” He
replied: “Hold on to Ash-Shaam.”
Ali reports: “I heard the Noble Messenger
of Allah saying: ‘The Abdaal who are forty
men, are in Ash-Shaam. Each time of them
dies; Allah replaces him with another man. It
is through them that He sends down rain,
grants victory over the enemies, and removes
the punishment from the people of Ash-
Shaam.’” The Abdaal are amongst the
greatest of Allah’s beloved and close friends,
and they will always exist until the end of this
world.
Rasulullah has also told us that Imam
Mahdi will rule from Damascus, that Prophet
‘Isa will descend at the eastern pillar of
the Masjid in Damascus, and that Ad-Dajjaal
will be killed in Palestine.
We learn from these Ahadeeth the great
importance and remarkable significance of
the lands of Ash-Shaam. May Allah restore
honour to the lands of Ash-Shaam, especially
Palestine, and rid us of His enemies. Ameen!
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Umar Al
Farooq, Sayyiduna 'Uthmaan Ghani and
Sayyiduna Ali were the consecutive
successors of Sayyiduna Rasulullah .
These four Khulafaa (plural for Caliph) are
called the "Khulafaa-e-Rashidun" or the
"Rightly Guided Caliphs." Together, these
four Khulafaa ruled the Islamic State for
about 29 years. They are called "Rightly
Guided" because they ruled the people of
that time exactly according to the Holy
Qur'an and the commands of Sayyiduna
Rasulullah .
Quotation
Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Umar has said:
"Those who are eager of following
anyone, should follow the Sahaabah who
were the best of community, whose
hearts were pure, whose wisdom was
profound and who did not believe in the
exhibition of outer life. They were people
whom Allah had selected for His prophet
and who extended His religion to the
world. Therefore, try to imitate their ways
and manners, for by Allah, they were
rightly guided people."
A Hadith on the Status of the
Four Khulafa
In the book, "Shawaa'idul-Haqq",
Sayyiduna Shaikh Abu Abdullah
narrates the following incident.
Once I visited the Holy City of Makkah and
met a man who claimed that he never felt
thirsty. When I asked him the reason for
this strange event, he replied, "There was
a time when I did not have any respect for
the Sahaaba of Muhammad . One night,
I dreamt that it was the Day of Qiyaamah
and there were many people in various
queues looking very thirsty and ragged. I
decided to follow a queue. We arrived at
the Fountain of Kawthar and saw that it
had four corners. At each corner were the
four Caliphs, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr,
Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Uthmaan and
Sayyiduna Ali . I thought that there was
no need for me to approach the first three
Caliphs as I only believed in Sayyiduna
Ali . Yet, when I approached him, he
turned his head away in displeasure.
Feeling extremely alarmed, I approached
the other three Caliphs and they also
behaved in the same manner. By now I
was very despondent.
"I noticed that Prophet Muhammad was
also approaching the Fountain. I ran
towards him and explained to him the
behaviour of the four Caliphs. He replied,
'Why should beloved Ali offer you a
cool drink, when you bear hatred and
scorn for the Sahaaba?' When I heard
this, I asked Sayyiduna Rasulullah
whether I would be forgiven or not if I
asked pardon for my incorrect beliefs. He
replied that I would be forgiven. I then
recited the Kalimah again and asked for
forgiveness. I was then ordered to return
to the Fountain of Kawthar and drink from
it. After this, I awoke from my sleep. From
that night onwards, I have never felt
thirsty. I then warned my family that I
would only accept those as my true family
if they accepted my true beliefs. Some of
them did accept".
The presence of the four Caliphs at the
four Pillars of Kawthar is also
substantiated by a Hadeeth. Sayyiduna
Rasulullah said, "The Fountain of
Kawthar possesses four Pillars: one
commanded by Abu Bakr, the second by
Umar, the third by Uthmaan and the fourth
by Ali ".
Again, explaining the lofty status of these
four Caliphs, Sayyiduna Rasulullah
said, "He who speaks good about Abu
Bakr, his religion is well established; he
who speaks good about Umar, his
religious path has been well grounded' he
who speaks good about Uthmaan is
enlightened with the Noor of Almighty
Allah and he who speaks good about
Ali holds on to a bond that never breaks.
They who speak well of my Sahaaba
(Companions) are truly Mu'mins".
The Messenger of Allah , was targeted by sorcerers, but he annulled their effect through the
recitation of the verses of the Qur'an.
The reading of the 'Manzil' has been proven to be extremely effective for protection against and
effective in removing evils from one's home like the evil influence of Jinn, black magic, witchcraft,
sorcery, protection from Shayaateen, thieves, harmful beasts and animals and other afflictions.
The Manzil is a compilation of the verses of the Qur’an by the renowned Muhaddith, Shaykhul
Hadith Maulana Muhammad Zakariyyah (RA), The elders of his family were particularly
A S h o r t C o l l e c t i o n o f punctual in reciting this 'Manzil' as an protection from witchcraft and cure and ensured that all
the children learned them in their childhood.
S u r a h & A y a a t
Reciting specific ayahs of the Qur’an for specific circumstances is proven from the Sunnah and
the practice of our pious predecessors. The Messenger of Allah did not leave any worldly affliction for which he did not teach us a
du’aa, undoubtedly the verses of the Qur’an and those du’aas that are mentioned in the Ahaadith are more effective and beneficial.
It is therefore strongly encouraged reading the Manzil daily. The Manzil will be really easy to memorize too, if it is read daily. Inshallah
M O R A L
BANKRUPTCY
Maulana Aslam Seedat
The recriminations have continued following last summer’s total
anarchy and lawlessness that ensued in the major cities and towns of
this country. Eyes startled as day after day the shocking images were
being beamed across the nation. People’s livelihoods were wrecked by
the mindless thugs and yobs. The Police were just bystanders as they
watched people of all ages looting and ransacking stores after stores
without fear or panic. The disease was so contagious that it spread
across the country like wildfire. The state could not protect the people
so the people began to protect their properties and livelihoods. Sadly
three Muslim brothers died after they were run over by a car in
Birmingham trying to protect their properties. The thuggery had turned
into carnage and murder.
The question on everyone’s lips has been, ‘How could this possibly
happen in one of the most civilized countries in the world? How can a
society stoop so low that it has fallen into the abyss? The accusations
and counter accusations have started. Before we delve into the
possible causes and factors that may have contributed towards this
level of degradation, one must remember that the recent events are for
some the culmination of the moral bankruptcy we’ve reached. Let’s not
forget the bankers looting; the MP’s ransacking every expense form at
their disposal and the media hacking into the private lives of the
innocent.
Man has made gigantic advancements and progress in the last hundred
years. Yet this pursuit for comfort and perfectness has come at a great
cost. The gap between the rich and poor continues to widen and
materialism has become the symbol of success. Failure continues to be
rewarded, hence, children living in the west desire the best the world
can offer without graft and sweat – the pre requisites of success.
Morality has been downtrodden through the emergence of an
unregulated capitalist system – success at any cost.
The cost of rebuilding and renovating the shops and businesses
damaged by public disturbances pale into insignificance when one
attempts to quantify the moral damage that has affected the lives of
thousands if not millions of people due to insatiable and voracious
institutions and uncaring and grasping individuals. Greed for more has
ensured people have forgotten the moral fibre that binds societies
together and ensures love, care and honesty, in contrast of a selfish,
uncaring and corrupt society.
Islam has never discouraged earning and yearning for more, however,
the Qur’aan counsels about the dangers of extreme obsession in
consumerism; * “Rivalry for worldly gains distracts you, until you visit
the grave”. Combating consumerism through self restraint, simplicity
and frugality are the notions that Prophet demonstrated throughout
his life. Individuals, gangs or mobs rampaging through a shop looking
for a pair of designer trainers, ipad or latest mobile are the hallmarks of
a society that has lost all the basic morals that allow a nation to exist in
peace and harmony.
As Muslims we must demonstrate self restraint and educate our
children to desire only the things that we can afford and ensure that
honesty and respect governs our behaviour and conduct. Ultimately we
must balance our desire for the ‘good things’ in this temporary abode
and focus on the hereafter. The Holy Qur’aan reminds us, “Do they
think that by giving them wealth and children we are racing
(accelerating) them to giving them good things. They really have no
idea! (Contrarily) those who stand in awe of their Lord, who believe in
His messages, who do not ascribe partners to Him, who always give
whatever they give with their hearts that tremble at the thought that they
must return to Him, they are the ones who are racing (accelerating)
towards good things, and they will be the first to attain them.”
(23: 55 – 61)
* Surah: 102 Verses : 1 - 2
DUROOD
SHAREEF
The importance of Durood Shareef (Blessings and Peace) becomes evident
through this that Allah has ordered Durood Shareef to be conveyed to our
honourable Prophet .
‘Verily Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O you who believe!
Send blessings on him, and salute him with all respect. (Al-Ahzab 33, Ayah 56)
The meaning of Allah’s blessing is pouring of mercy. This is not an ordinary mercy
that other creation receive as well, however it refers to special type of mercy which
relates to the status of Prophet and as such no other creation apart from the
Prophet receives it.
The meaning of Angel’s blessing is that they supplicate for that special mercy.
Thereafter, in the above verse of the Qur’an, believers are ordered to send
blessings. The meaning of this is to supplicate for that special mercy, (on Prophet
) which is also known as Durood.
The principle objective of the verse is to inform the Muslims that they continue to
send Salaat wa Salaam (Blessings and Peace) onto Prophet .
Maulana Raashid Pakwashi
The pedestal on which we have put movie stars,
sports figures, and other famous people could
arguably give many people neck strain. We idolize
them, follow their every move, and treat them as
modern day gods. It has begun to beg many
similarities with history’s biggest idolaters – the
Greeks and Romans. It is common knowledge that
the majority of these cursed idolater’s Gods were
simply exaggerated tales of prominent people in
society.
Let us examine why people would choose to follow
and value the pursuit of such personalities.
One theory researched by academics looking into the
cause of CWS (celebrity worship syndrome – yes this
exists as an actual psychological condition) is that
modern day society is clearly dominated by TV and
the internet. This so called ‘advancement’ has
resulted in a decline of relationships between
families and communities and has therefore revealed
a massive ‘ crater’ of longing for personal
‘connection’ which has been filled up with love and
obsession with celebrities. Respect, loyalty and value
for family and friendship has been replaced by the
worship of the famous.
According to some psychologists, some of these fan
bases often resemble cults and mini religions. For
example, the similarity of Star Trek fans to a religious
cult has been clearly documented. The obsessions of
many ‘celebrity followers’ can also resemble
religious worship as fans will tend to pursue an
interest in one celebrity and criticise and condemn
competing stars. Some fans even perform acts that
hold parallels to cult rituals such as ‘religiously’
ensuring to watch all of a celebrity's television
appearances or a footballer’s or certain team’s
football matches and even try to collect items that
have been simply touched by their chosen star.
Our own scholars suggest the answer is simple. The
love for this world, love for money, fame, status and
power is embedded deeply within us creating a sense
of yearning and love for those who have these so
called accomplishments. Allah says:
This worldly life is nothing but an amusement and
play, and the Last Abode is the real life indeed. Only
if they know! (29:64)
Some Muslims’ obsession has translated into their
own religion with the wide celebration and sense of
accomplishment with celebrities embracing Islam.
Unfortunately there are certain people who equated
the validity of Islam to such peoples revertion. As the
Qur’an clearly states that it is Allah who provides
guidance to whomever He wills, and for those who
reject the Truth, a terrible punishment awaits.
Islam’s validity and strength are not dependent only
on celebrities. During the early days of Islam in
Makkah, the Messenger of Allah , went to all the
chiefs of the various tribes in Makkah. These people
were the celebrities of their time. The majority did not
pay heed. Many of the downtrodden and so called
ordinary people such as Bilal embraced Islam. The
tribal chiefs became the greatest enemies of Islam
but Islam still triumphed because Allah willed it so.
If Muslims truly want to see the miracle of Islam and
the Qur’an in contemporary history, then they should
ponder over the transformation that people undergo
when they become Muslims. One should read some
of the enlightening ‘journeys’ and ‘challenges’ some
reverts have faced to achieve their Imaan, unlike us
who have simply had it passed down as our
forefathers legacy. It is to this aspect that Muslims
need to pay attention. Further, Muslims must
themselves live according to the tenets of Islam. It is
embarrassing to constantly hear that Islam is the
best religion but Muslims the worst followers. The
challenge facing Muslims today is to present a model
of the decent individual who is caring and
compassionate and who provides inspiration by his
or her own example.
The Adherence to the
Sunnah and the
Importance of Pardah
(Part 5)
By Maulana Abdur Rauf Sufi Sahib (D.B)
An Innocent Glance Is a
Devilish Fraud
Once a man began to say after Salaah,
“Maulana Sahib, what if a person casts an
innocent glance?” I asked him, “What kind
of a glance is an innocent glance?”
Bearers of a glance more innocent than
ours were the honourable Sahaabah .
and they never ventured to ask Prophet
such a question since there is no such
thing as an innocent glance. Yes, it can be
said that if our gaze falls upon someone
without intending to do so, then this will be
forgiven as it was not done intentionally.
Hadhrat Bareerah narrates that our
beloved Prophet said to Hadhrat Ali ,
who was the fourth Khalifah of Islam and
son-in-law of Our beloved Prophet
Muhammad , “Ali ! Do not glance again
after the gaze befalls (meaning, if one’s
gaze falls upon a woman accidentally then
one must not look again a second time),
because the first glance will be forgiven for
you (if no thought or intention was
accompanied with it); however, the second
glance is not permissible.” (Mazahir-e-
Haq, Vol 3, Mansooba ko dekhne awr
chhupane ka bayaan)
How useful these reformative advices are
for myself and for all of the men and
women. Now that you are to go home, it is
essential that this information stays in your
heart and mind with the firm resolve of not
to glance at any non-Mahram who you may
come across. In Gujarat, in particular,
there is a major trend of women going
around without any form of veiling.
An Immodest Woman Is Not a
Woman At All
On our visit to Jalaalabad where we stayed
for approximately 9 to 10 days, we did not
see a single woman without Pardah. When
the women were out, they had the kind of
Burqaa on which people of the past used to
wear. Similarly even in Deoband, where I
actually studied for a year, I saw no
unveiled women the whole year through.
How wonderful this is compared to our
locality here, where we would find so few
women in Pardah. There are a few young
women who have just begun to observe
Pardah. May Allah grant them
consistency and accept their deed. Not
only in our village Lajpur but in the whole of
Gujarat, there is scarcity of Pardah, not to
mention the type of clothing women go out
wearing. Al-Amaan-Al-Hafeez. May Allah
protect us all. It becomes very difficult
to protect one’s gaze. It causes the men to
feel ashamed when in fact, it ought to be
the women who should be ashamed.
Modesty is a greater part of a woman’s
being. In fact, it has been said that an
immodest woman is not worthy of being
called a woman at all. It is simply not
acceptable to call such a woman, an ‘awrat
(Urdu word for woman).
The Admirable Deed of the Daughter
of Hadhrat Shu’aib
Hadhrat Shu’aib who was a very
illustrious Messenger, had two daughters.
When Hadhrat Musa arrived in their
city of Madyan, he incidentally met with the
two daughters, one of whom was called
Hadhrat Safeerah R.A and the other
Hadhrat Safoorah R.A. As they had no
servants or labourers in the house and
their father Hadhrat Shuaib was very
old and weak, the two girls had no choice
but to take the goats out for grazing and for
watering. Please note that such permission
is granted in straitened circumstances and
that in those times the Shariah was a
slightly different one in which some Masa'il
were different. Despite this, both daughters
of Hadhrat Shu’aib were very modest.
The point of relating this incident is that
Hadhrat Musa watered the goats for
them and both girls quickly went away to
their father. Hadhrat Shu’aib asked
them how they had arrived home earlier
than usual, upon which they related how
they had met a strange man who had
watered their animals for them, enabling
them to arrive home earlier. Thereafter,
Hadhrat Shu’aib requested for the man
to be called. Remember that there was no
other man in the household. I am repeating
this because of the question which arises:
Why would a woman go to call a strange
non-Mahram man? Well there were no
men in the household besides Hadhrat
Shu’aib and he had become very weak
and old. However, the Noble Qur’an
illustrates the girl’s manner of walk;
‘Then one of the two women came to
him, walking with shyness, ….’
(28:25, Translation from Ma’ariful Qur’an)
Allahu Akbar! She was the daughter of a
Prophet and had gone out due to necessity
and Allah mentions that she walked very
shyly. After arriving, the girl said to
Hadhrat Musa ;
‘… “My father is calling you, so that he
rewards you with something in return of
your watering for us.”…’
(28:25, Translation from Ma’ariful Qur’an)
The girl said, “My father is calling you?”
“Why?” “To reward you for watering our
flock.” The conclusion is that Hadhrat Musa
walked ahead and the girl walked
behind, however, since Hadhrat Musa
didn’t know the location of their house, the
daughter of Hadhrat Shu’aib . gave him
directions from behind. What great lengths
to protect oneself. An illustrious Messenger
conducts himself in this manner and our
affairs are such that when men and women
get together on the road for some reason
then they prefer to walk side by side. He
walks together and she walks together too,
as is the case in towns and cities. In fact,
we should give way and protect ourselves
in such a way that our bodies do not touch
that of men. May Allah protect us all.
(Edited from a lecture by Hazrat
Mufti Moosa Badat)
Nikah is such an important blessing
and such an important means of
attaining peace. Abdullah Bin Mas’ud
reported that Allah's Messenger
said to us:
“O young men, those among you
who can support a wife should marry,
for it restrains eyes (from casting evil
glances) and preserves one from
immorality.” (Muslim) i.e. Nikah saves
one from sin.
“And women shall have rights similar
to the rights against them, according
to what is equitable” (2:228)
Women have the same rights that you
have on them, after Nikah their food,
shelter clothing etc. All is our
responsibility. Nikah is an agreement
that we carry in the name of Allah.
After marriage there are bound to be
trips and bumps but because we are
total unaware of the guidance
provided for us by the Prophet we
leap without thought and utter the
words of divorce over the most trivial
of issues. We have made the issue of
divorce into a plaything.
The Qur’aan where it describes
Divorce, especially mentions a verse:
“Do not take the verses of Allah in
jest.” (2:231)
A man once came to Abdullah Ibn
Abbas and said I gave my wife 100
Divorces. He replied, “ With 3
divorces your wife was separated but
with the remaining 97 you made a
mockery of the signs Allah.
Abu Hurairah reported: Woman
has been created from a rib and will in
no way be straightened for you; so if
you wish to benefit by her, benefit by
her while crookedness remains in her.
And if you attempt to straighten her,
you will break her, and breaking her is
divorcing her.(Muslim)
It is said there that the blessed wives
got together and asked the Holy
Prophet that their sustenance
allowance should be increased.
“When the Holy Prophet heard this
demand from the blessed wives he
isolated himself to a small room
above the home of Aisha RA On their
part, the blessed wives never thought
that their submission would cause
pain to him. It was simply because of
the well-being of common
Muslims around them that they
had also thought of the same for
themselves.
A verse was revealed that gave
all the wives of the Holy Prophet
the choice to either accept to
continue living with him as their
husband in the condition he is in
( that is, in his straightened
economic condition), or become
free from him through divorce. If
they were to take the first option,
they will deserve greater reward
and higher ranks in the Hereafter
as compared to other women. And if
they were to take the second option,
that is, taking a divorce, they will not
have to face any displeasure as
customary with worldly people. In fact,
they would be given a send-off with
honour, and parting gifts in
accordance with Sunnah .
It is reported by Aisha RA "When this
verse of choice was revealed, the
Holy Prophet disclosed it to me
before any other wife. Before reciting
the verse, he said: I am going to tell
you something. But, you do not have
to make haste in giving your
response. You should rather consult
your parents then respond. When I
heard this verse, I immediately
submitted before him, "Do I have to
go and consult my parents in this
matter? As for me, I choose Allah and
His Messenger and the Home of
the Hereafter. “Then, after me, this
command of the Qur'an was
announced to all the blessed wives.
All of them said what I had said first
(that is, none of them elected to have
worldly affluence against the honour
of being the wives of the Holy Prophet
." (Tirmidhi)
Questions Answ
An sw ered by Rab etah Ift aa Panel
Question: I was wondering if alcohol in deodorants and creams
etc is permissible to use?
Answer: In principle, it should be remembered that, alcohol
extracted from grapes and dates is decisively unlawful (Haram), both
in its oral intake as well as application, as it is considered to be
impure (najis). This type of alcohol is known as Khamr (wine), and it
will be unlawful to even consume one drop of such alcohol according
to all the classical scholars.
Allah Most High says:
"O you who believe! Alcohol (khamr), gambling, dedication of
stones, and divination by arrows are an abomination (impure) of
Shaytan's handiwork. So abstain from such (abomination) that you
may prosper." (al-An'am, 90)
Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah narrates that the Messenger of Allah
said: "Khamr (wine) is from these two trees, dates and
grapes." (Sahih Muslim 1985)
However, if the alcohol is extracted and derived from other than
grapes and dates, then the Hanafi opinion on which fatwa is given
and that of the other three schools of thought, i.e. Shafi'ee, Maliki
and Hanbali is that all types of beverages are prohibited whether
less or more, and whether consumed to the level of intoxication or
otherwise. This based on the following two Hadiths:
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar narrates that the Messenger of Allah said:
"Every intoxicant is Khamr and every intoxicant is Unlawful
(Haram)..." (Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawood 3671, Sunan
Tirmidhi and others)
Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abd Allah narrates that the Messenger of
Allah said: "Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, then a small
quantity of it is also forbidden." (Sunan Abu Dawood, no 3673,
Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa'i and others)
Ahmad), due to the Hadith "Every intoxicant is Khamr and every
intoxicant is unlawful (Haram)" (recorded by Imam Muslim), and also
the Hadith: "Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, then a small
quantity of it is also forbidden" (recorded by Ahmad, Ibn Majah & al-
Darqutni and he classed it as authentic.
The upshot of all of the foregoing is that, now all the four Sunni
schools of Islamic law are unanimous on the fact that all types of
alcohols and beverages are unlawful (Haram) and impure (najis),
even in small quantities. Any beverage that intoxicates in a large
amount, even a drop of it will be considered unlawful (Haram).
However, contemporary scholars have ruled that the prevalent
perfumes, deodorants and creams may be used, for normally the
alcohol used in them is from other than grapes and dates (or
synthetic alcohol), and these types of alcohols will be although
unlawful (Haram) to consume, but not impure for external
application. In other words, the view of Imam Abu Hanifa and Imam
Abu Yusuf (Allah have mercy on them both) may be used for
external application of these alcohols.
In our times, because of the widespread use of alcohol in all sorts of
things, it has become very difficult to avoid it. This is why great
Hanafi scholars of our times have given the above mentioned fatwa,
in that the external use of this type of alcohol is not Haram.
However, its oral intake is still impermissible except in cases of
necessary medication.
Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Allah have mercy on him) States:
“Those intoxicants that are in liquid form be it wine, palm wine or any
other sort when consumed in a large amount intoxicate a person
then a drop amount of it is also Haram even though a small amount
does not intoxicate. To use such an intoxicant for medicinal
purposes whether it be to consume or apply externally will be
prohibited regardless of the fact that it has its original form or not.
The law regarding those things that are intoxicants but have a solid
form not liquid by origin like tobacco, nutmeg, opium etc. is that an
amount that has the capability to intoxicate or course harm is
Haram. The amount that does not intoxicate or course harm will be
permitted and can be used in creams pastes and creams for
external use.”
To summarise, it would be permitted to use the various types of
perfumes, deodorants and creams that contain alcohol due to the
fact that the alcohol contained in them is from other than grapes and
or it is a synthetic alcohol (formulated from chemical substances)
and not the khamr (wine) that is absolutely impermissible.
Thus, according to these scholars, all forms of alcohol beverages
will be considered unlawful (Haram) and impure (najis). Once it is
established that a given beverage intoxicates, it will be unlawful to
consume even a small serving of that beverage.
The late Hanafi scholars also gave Fatwa on this position of the
student of Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan due to
widespread Fitna.
Imam al-Haskafi (Allah have mercy on him) states:
"Imam Muhammad considered the various beverages, such as
those made from honey, fig, etc to be categorically unlawful
(Haram), whether it is less in quantity or more, and the Fatwa is
given on his position."
Imam Ibn Abidin (Allah have mercy on him) explains the above:
"Fatwa is given on the view of Imam Muhammad and this is also the
position held by the other three Imams (i.e. Shafi'ee, Malik &
However, it is more religiously precautionary to avoid using such
perfumes and deodorants, whenever reasonably possible, because
of the differences of opinion regarding it.
But it should be remembered that occasionally certain deodorants,
perfumes, etc contain alcohol that is derived from grapes, dates, etc,
such as synthetic ethyl alcohol, thus making the perfume or cream
impure and unlawful to use.
Question: While reading the Witr I forgot to read the Qunoot? I
made sajdah-e-sahw; do I have to repeat the Witr?
Answer: If you have left out the Qunoot, Sajda-e-Sahw will
recompense for the error. There is no need to repeat the
Witr. (Bahishti Zewar)
Question: A person pays the money of Mahr to his wife and
afterwards took that money to buy gold for her. Is it allowed to
take the money back from the wife?
12
Issue 41 www.rabetah.com May / June 2012

Answer: If a husband has given Mahr money to the wife, the
money now comes in the ownership of the wife. She can do
whatever she wants with the money. If she wishes, she may give
the money to the husband as a gift (or to buy gold for her).
However, the husband cannot demand from her to give the money
back.
Question: When I am reading Qadhaa Salaat, do I also have to
read Qadhaa of Witr?
Answer: Qadhaa is made of the Witr as well. (Bahishti Zewar)
Question: Please could you suggest a du’aa which helps to
improve the memory, and counter act forgetfulness?
Answer: There are no clear ayah or explicit du’aa which has been
mentioned in the Qur’an or Hadith for improving the memory,
however the Ulama through experience have mentioned certain
methods which they have experienced to be useful in improving the
memory. Some of these methods are listed below.
1. Recite يا قوي )Ya Qawiyyo) 11 times after every Fardh Salah
by placing the right hand on your forehead.
(Bayanuddua, Sheikh Aaqil Saharunpuri)
2. Frequently recite:
3. Whenever you forget something make dhikr and remember Allah
as Allah mentions in the Qur’an
وَاذْكُرْ‏ رَبَّكَ‏ إِذَا نَسِيتَ‏
Remember Allah when you forget
4.To eat food such as almonds and walnuts and cashews and to
have a lot of milk.
5.The greatest method to improve and strengthen the memory is
by saving oneself from all types of sin, be it major and minor. This
is how Imam Waki’ee RA advised his student Imam Shafi'ee when
he complained of weakness in memory
Question: Is there a du’aa which will help increase the love
between a husband and wife?
Answer: Recite the following regularly :
رَبَّنَا هَبْ‏ لَنَا مِنْ‏ أَزْ‏ وَاجِنَا وَذُرِّ‏ يَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ‏ أَعْيُنٍ‏ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ‏ إِمَامًا
O our rabb grant us in our wives and our offspring the joy of our
eyes, and make us guides to those who guard (against evil).
This dua could also be recited
Question: Can Aqeeqah be done in another country e.g. India/
Pakistan?
Answer: Aqeeqah can be done in any country.
Question: Is a woman who is in the state of impurity i.e. haiz,
nifas or janabat allowed to recite du’aas which contain
Qur’anic ayats? Also what is the ruling regarding reading
Manzil during these times?
Answer: A woman who is in the state of haiz ,nifas or janabat is
allowed to recite such du’aas which contain Qur’anic ayats with the
condition that the Qur’anic ayats have the meaning of du’aa in
them and that they are recited not as tilaawat of the Qur’aan but as
a du’aa. (Shami, Babul Haiz)
As for the Manzil Shareef the Ulama have mentioned that a
women is not allowed to recite the Manzil Shareef during these
times because the Manzil consist of many such aayaats that do
not have the meaning of du’aa in them and a women is
not allowed to recite the verses of the Qur’an in theses times.
Tarbiyyah- Deendaari guarantees
happiness.
“A father cannot give a child any gift
better than good manners.” This
Hadith has been recorded by Imam
al-Tirmidhi on the authority of
Sa’eed ibn al-’Aas .
In another Hadith Jabir ibn Samurah
relates that Rasulullah said,
“Indeed, it is better for a man to
educate his child than to donate a
Saa’ to charity.” (Jami’ al-Tirmidhi)
Buraidah al-Aslami narrates that
Rasulullah stated, “Whoever
reads the Qur’an, studies it and
then acts upon it, on the Day of
Judgement he will be made to wear
a crown of ‘noor’, the glow of which
will be like sunlight. His parents will
(each) be dressed in a pair of
clothes, both of which (the people
of) the world cannot make. They will
ask: For what reason are we
dressed (in such clothes)? It will be
said: In return for your child
u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h e
Qur’an.” (Mustadrak al -Haakim)
Alhamdulillah, recently I had the
opportunity of listening to the Shaykh ul-
Hadith of Darul Uloom Farooqia Pakistan,
Qadhi Maulana Abdur Rashid Sahib D.B.
His talk was very moving and I want to
share some of his words with my mothers
and sisters.
The respected Maulana started off by
By Apa Binte Gulam
emphasizing how necessary it is to gain
the knowledge of ‘Deen’. He explained that
if a male gains this knowledge and
practises upon it he will gain the pleasure
of Allah for benefiting only himself.
Whereas, if a female gains the knowledge
of ‘Nabuwwah’ and ‘Deen’, and practises
upon it she not only benefits herself, but
also her children and in turn her whole
family lineage. If a lap of a mother is a lap
of a ‘muttaqiyyah’, then the whole family
will be the pious servants of Allah. On the
other hand if the lap of the mother is a lap
of a faasiqah (sinner), then how can one
expect the children to be the god-fearing
servants of Allah?
When the mother is a pious lady,
fearful of Allah and adhering to
the commandments of Allah,
then her children will be the
Imam Bukhari, Imam Muslim,
Imam Razi, Junayd Baghdadi
and Hasan Basri of our time.
When the mother is a pious lady, fearful of
Allah and adhering to the commandments
of Allah, then her children will be the Imam
Bukhari, Imam Muslim, Imam Razi, Junayd
Baghdadi and Hasan Basri of our time. I
am sure that we have all heard (the saying)
‘the first Madrasah is the lap of a mother’.
Through scientific research it has been
proven that during the first years of a
child’s life, the child absorbs what the
parents do, especially what the mother
does (as the child spends most of the time
with her), and later imitates them and
emulates what he had seen them doing. If
he sees her praying Salaah, then he will
copy her Ruku and Sujood. If the child
sees her mother making du’aa, the child
will also lift their hands and imitate what
their mother does. If the child sees her
reciting the Qur’an, the child will also
pretend to read. God forbid, if the child
sees the mother swearing, watching TV,
listening to music or arguing with the
father, they will learn the same things and
later grow up to do the same.
Let us take a look at how Muhammad ibn
Isma'eel became the great Imam Bukhari.
His mother was a pious lady. Imam
Bukhari was blind. It was through the tears
shed by his mother that Allah returned his
eyesight. It is said that she sent him away
with his inheritance to travel the world and
gain knowledge from the Muhadditheen of
the time. He (completed his studies and)
returned to his mother at a time when he
had still not grown a beard. Imagine the
sacrifice of his mother, since she must
have sent him to gain knowledge at a very
young age!
There have been women of such status
that the great Fuqahaa of the time would
go to these women to ask their opinions on
certain Masa'il, which they were unable to
understand. Take a look at Hadhrat
Aa'ishah (ra). She was only 18 at the time
of the demise of Rasulullah . She was a
great Faqeehah (Muslim jurist), Mufassirah
(expert in the knowledge of the Qur’an) of
her time. The Sahabah would wait at
her door to ask her Masa'il that confused
them and they would find the answer with
Hadhrat Aa'ishah Siddiqah (ra). Hadhrat
Fatimah (ra) was the step-daughter of
Hadhrat Aa'ishah (ra), but, being close in
age, they were also friends. Once they
were sitting together when Hadhrat
Fatimah (ra) started to smile. Hadhrat
Aa'ishah (ra) asked, “What made you
smile?” She replied, “I was just thinking of
the two of us and our fathers; mine
Rasulullah and yours Hadhrat Abu Bakr
.” Hadhrat Aa'ishah (ra) responded,
“Your husband is Hadhrat Ali and my
husband is Rasulullah ...” After a
moment she said, “…and Fatimah, on the
Day of Judgement, your hand will be in the
hand of Ali and my hand will be in the
hand of Rasulullah ...” She continued
after a short while, “...and Fatimah, sitting
on my throne will be the Prophet and
sitting on your throne will be Hadhrat Ali
.” Look at (the depth of) her knowledge
that within moments she responds with
three facts.
It is said that once Shaah Shahzaad, who
was a very pious man and also a governor
at the time, saw a young man praying a
very long Salaah. After the man finished he
went to him and proposed, “Would you like
your Nikah to take place with the daughter
of Shaah?” He replied, “I’m a very poor
man and Shaah won’t even look my way. If
you mention me to him, he may start to
laugh.” Shaah states, “I am Shahzaad and
I wish to have your Nikah performed with
my daughter.” The young man says, “I am
very poor and I don’t know if your daughter
will be able to stay in such poverty.” Shaah
responds, “My daughter has asked me to
marry her to a pious devout man.” So the
Nikah takes place. Shaah takes the
daughter to the house of her husband. She
sees half a roti on one side of the room
and faints. After she regains
consciousness the young man exclaims, “I
told you she would not be able to endure
my poverty! I ate half a roti at Sehri and the
other half is for my Iftaar.” The daughter
responds by saying, “I am distraught that
you don’t even have enough Yaqeen
(trust) in Allah ! The Allah Who gave you
food at Sehri is capable of giving you food
at Iftaar! Why have you hoarded this roti
when there are many in need of it? You
should have given it away as Sadaqah!”
These were women just like us, but look at
their ‘Taqwaa’ and conviction in Allah .
It is said regarding Imam Ahmad Ghazali
(ra) that he would never pray Salaah
behind his brother Imam Muhammad
Ghazali (ra). The latter complained to his
mother. So, the next day, Imam Ahmad
went to the Masjid and came back after
breaking his Salaah half way through.
Imam Muhammad came home and started
complaining, “He shouldn’t have come at
all today. He left half way which is
worse!” So Imam Ahmad says to his
mo th e r , “ I l e f t b e ca u se
Muhammad’s attention wasn’t
in his Salaah during the
second raka'ah.” Imam
Muhammad responds, “I thought of an
Aayah and started to do Istikhraaj of
Masaail from it.” Subhaanallah! Imagine
how exalted they both must be in the eyes
of Allah , but the mother admonishes
both of them saying, “I have failed in the
way I have raised the two of you if you both
cannot keep your concentration in Salaah!”
Hadhrat Shaykh Muhammad Zakkariyyah
(ra) says that his paternal grandmother
would pray 16 parahs of the Qur’an every
day even with all the housework. Through
the Barakah of this, his father knew 1-1½
parahs when he was weaned of his milk!
Subhaanallah. He further states,
“Alhamdulillah, all my children have been
given the taleem of the Qur’an and their
upbringing has been done through the
Qur’an. My daughter who was in the Nikah
of Maulana Yusuf became critically ill with
TB (tuberculosis). This was at the time
when TB was incurable. During her illness
she was still punctual with her mamulaat.
She passed away in the state of Sajdah
while praying her Maghrib Salaah. I have
seen my daughter adorned as a bride and I
have also seen her in her Kafan. By Allah,
she was more beautiful when leaving this
world in the Kafan.” It was her Tarbiyyah
and upbringing that led her to become a
such a muttaqiyyah.
It has been narrated in Kanzul-Ummaal
that looking at four things is Ibaadah.
1. The Ka’bah. 2. The Qur’an. 3. Parents.
4. The water of Zam Zam. If merely
looking at the Qur’an is Ibaadah,
then how beloved must it be to
Allah if we understand the
meaning, spend time
u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h e
tafaaseer and give our
c h i l d r e n t h e
knowledge of the
Qur’an.
In the time
of Imam
Muhammad (ra), the student of Imam Abu
Haneefah (ra), there was a king who was
marrying off his daughter. In his happiness
he said, “If I don’t give everything in this
world to my daughter as jahez then talaaq
be on my wife.” Later he realised what he
had said and came to Imam Muhammad
(ra) asking for a solution. Imam
Muhammad (ra) said that it was simple. All
he had to do was give the Qur’an to his
daughter, as it is more valuable (than the
whole world) in the eyes of Allah!
Imagine if we educate our children with the
knowledge of the Qur’an, inculcate them
good manners and help them to practise
on the Shari’ah and the Qur’an, then we
are giving them the best treasures.
Nowadays we give them tolas of gold,
houses and cars, i.e. material things, but
we don’t give them anything that is going to
benefit them. My beloved mothers and
sisters, money doesn’t guarantee
happiness!
If we are fulfilling the commands of Allah
and we have beautified our houses with
Aamaal, Adhkaar, Salaah and Tilaawah,
then our children will learn from us and,
from a young age, imitate us. Furthermore,
we should gain the knowledge of the
Qur’an and Ahaadith, and give our children
this beautiful gift too, because having Deen
in our life will guarantee happiness,
tranquillity and peace of mind.
Continued from last issue...
By Maulana Raasheed Pakwashi
As explained previously, there were slight differences in narrating from
the narrators of the Ahaadeeth. These variations could either have been
intentional, or unintentional, whilst narrating or whilst understanding and
explaining the narrations. Therefore it can be understood why the
Imaams of Hadeeth and Jurisprudence felt there was need to assess all
the narrations and thereby award preference to the most correct and
reliable ones.
It is an accepted fact amongst those of knowledge that the opinions of
the Imaams are not their own, but rather they are extracted from the
teachings of the Prophet .
In such circumstances each person has one of two choices. Either he
has the capability and understanding to assess the differences and is in
a capacity to award preference to narrations accordingly. Such a person
is referred to as a “mujtahid”. Or, a person does not have this capability
and he does not have any option but to follow one who does. As an
example, if a person does not know the route to a destination, he
resorts to following a guide. However before he adopts a guide he has
to decide whether that guide is indeed reliable and will actually help him
reach his destination, or will he lead him astray. If that same person
decides to change his guide at every junction then is nothing but
It is clearly evident from the table above that there is a period of 200
years between the Prophet’s demise and the birth of the main compilers
of Hadeeth such as Imam Bukhari RA and Imam Muslim RA. Whereas
the four Great Imaams all lived predominantly before there was a need
for this mass compilation. Therefore it goes without saying that the
interpretation and quality of narration cannot be compared between the
two eras as some deluded so called intellectuals have begun to do so in
this era. When these very compilers of Hadeeth, despite their mountain
of knowledge themselves followed an Imaam, then how can we give
preference to their compilation over the people they themselves
followed.
The status of the Imaams is extremely exalted. It does not befit their
eminence to act in contrary to the Ahaadeeth of the Prophet .
However it should be quite obvious that when it comes to bringing about
harmony between apparently contradicting ahaadeeth or awarding
preference to one over the other, the opinions of the imams will
undoubtedly get preference over the contemporary Ulama. May Allah
reward these chosen, god-inspired and self-sacrificing Imaams who
have become ‘guiding’ stars towards our salvation. And peace and
salutations be upon the teacher of the guides -Muhammad Mustafa .
An 80 year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45 years old highly educated son. Suddenly a
crow perched on their window. The Father asked his Son, "What is this?" The Son replied "It is a crow." After a few
minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, "What is this?" The Son said "Father, I have just now told you "It's a crow."
After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time, What is this?" At this time some expression of irritation was
felt in the Son's tone when he said to his Father with a rebuff. "It's a crow, a crow." A little after, the Father again asked his Son the
4th time, "What is this?" This time the Son shouted at his Father, "Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again,
although I have told you so many times 'IT IS A CROW'. Are you not able to understand this?"
A little later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born. On opening
a page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary: -
"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My Son asked me 23 times what it was,
and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23
times. I did not at all feel irritated, I rather felt affection for my innocent child."
While the little child asked him 23 times "What is this", the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and when
today the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son felt irritated and annoyed. So...
If your parents attain old age, do not repulse them or look at them as a burden, but speak to them a gracious word, be cool, obedient,
humble and kind to them. Be considerate to your parents.
In Surah Al-Isra' (Children of Israel) there is a very beautiful description of how parents are to be treated. Allah says:
"Your Lord had decreed, that you worship none save Him, and (that you show) kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age
with you, say not "Fie" unto them nor repulse them, but speak unto them a gracious word. And lower unto them the wing of submission through
mercy, and say: My Lord! Have mercy on them both, as they did care for me when I was young." [17:23-24]
The recognition and respect of parents is mentioned in the Qur'an eleven times; in every instance, Allah reminds children to recognize
and to appreciate the care and love they have received from their parents.
We should make a firm intention and serve our old parents in the BEST way like they have always showered their selfless love on us
and we should say good and kind words to our dear parents, no matter how they behave.
S TORY TIME
– Pa rents
My mum only had one eye. I hated her… She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for
students and teachers to support the family. There was this one day during school time
where my mum came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to
me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my
classmates said, ‘EEEE, your mum only has one eye!’
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mum to just disappear. I went up to
her that day and said, ‘ If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why
don’t you just die?’ My mum did not respond… I didn’t even stop to think for a
second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I was unaware of her
feelings. I wanted be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I
studied real hard, got a chance to go abroad to study.
Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy
with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my Mother came to visit me.
She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren. When she
stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I yelled at her for coming over
uninvited. I screamed at her, ‘How dare you come to my house and scare my
children!’ GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!’
And to this, my mother quietly answered, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry. I
may have got the wrong address,’ and she disappeared out of sight. One day, a
letter regarding a school meeting came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I
was going on a business trip. After the meeting, I went to the old cottage just out
of curiosity. My neighbours said that my mother had died. I did not shed a single
tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to read.
My Dearest Son,
I think of you all the time. I’m sorry that I came to
your house and scared your children. I was so
glad when I heard you were coming for the
meeting. But I may not be able to even get out of
bed to see you. I’m sorry that I was a constant
embarrassment to you when you were growing
up.
You see… when you were very little, you got into
an accident, and lost your eye. As a mother, I
couldn’t stand watching you having to grow up
with one eye. So I gave you mine. I was so
proud of my son who was seeing a whole new
world for me, in my place, with that eye.
With all my love to you,
Your Mother.
After reading the letter he cried so much remembering
how he had treated his own mother, but inside he knew
that it was too late now.
