Art Expert to give students lesson in work with
collages
Art students of Mrs. Myrna Eastwood about to
begin their own work in collages will see today and
tomorrow what has been done by an expert in the
field.
Three collages of Ann Knapton, San Diego artist
who displays her work regularly at the Carousel
Gallery in Encinitas, were shown to students together
with some of the material she customarily uses.
The pictures- a chipmunk, a boat, and two dogs
– are fashioned from such materials as tissue paper,
canvas, newspapers, wallpaper, printed sacks and
acrylic paint and then varnished to create a surface
which is still flat but rougher than that of an ordinary
painting.
Along with the paintings Mrs. Knapton lent a box
filled with materials she has so that the Warren Junior
High School students can get a clearer notion of what
possibilities they may have.
Works on Display
Indian Leads Children to Art, by Noel Osment
Robert Freeman is an artist who is an Indian, not
an Indian artist. His 79 students, mostly children, are
Indians learning art- not children learning Indian art.
“I don’t care what they paint, as long as they get it
down, “ said Freeman, who had accompanied a group
of the youngsters in from the Rincon Reservation
to see their work exhibited at San Dieguito Art
Association’s Chateau Art Gallery in Del Mar.
Nevertheless, a number of the children did choose
stylized Indian motifs for their colorful paintings.
“They probably do that because they think
that’s what’s expected of them,” said Freeman, who
believes the day for tom-toms and teepees is past, and
cites as misleading Indian arts and crafts exhibitions
devoted solely to Navajo jewelry and rugs.
Freeman’s own abilities as an artist, particularly
in the media of pen and ink, have brought him to
the attention of the La Jolla Art Association, as well
as the San Dieguito group. His heart is with his
students, however, and his work is shown along with
theirs.
His exhibitions, such as the recent one at the
Chateau Gallery, and another that opened April 1 in
La Jolla at the association gallery, have a practical
purpose.
The members of the San Dieguito Art Association
have collected art supplies- and are still collecting
them – for use at the Southern California Indian Art
Center in Valley Center, where Freeman conducts his
classes.
Proceeds of the paintings sold from the La Jolla
exhibition, which will last until April 20, also will be
donated to the center.
Although he has no professional art background,
Freeman is a self-supporting artist whose professional
career began when he placed some drawings in a
bookstore and they sold out.
Freeman’s plans for young people on the
reservation go beyond art classes, however. His
fears for their future have led him into the realm of
counseling Indian students in high school.
Looking around at the bright-eyed and interested
youngsters, mostly preteens, who had accompanied
him from the reservation, he said, “these children will
become the future dropouts and alcoholics if they are
not reached and encouraged young enough.”
He hopes to see their musical potential developed,
and is willing to start music groups – even though
he plays no instrument himself – as soon as some
instruments can be obtained for the local school.
The La Jolla exhibition will be shown to the public
at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. today in the gallery,
7917 Girard Avenue. The paintings will be on view
from noon to 5 p.m. during the week.

“PATH LEADING WAY” — CHARLES del
CASTILLO — FIRST PRIZE — OIL

MAY MEETING
Monday - May 8, 1972 - 1:30 PM
There has been a program change — Henry Meier
will be unable to appear. Philipa Henschel has been
fortunate to obtain the talents of Eric Dwyer who
came to Oceanside in the 1950’s from London via
Canada. Mr. Dwyer will demonstrate for us his
scratch-board method, incorporating the silk screen
process.
Before serving in the British Armed Forces during
WWII he studied at St. Albans Art School in London.
His early years in Oceanside were occupied in the
sign and commercial art field. Now, semi-retired, he
contributes his talents to the City of Oceanside and
the Lions’ Club.
“MINDING THE STORE”
Or, in other words “sitting the Guild” has come
back into our conversations, for with the departure of
Debby and Syd Sowers as live-in host and hostess we
are now all confronted with our responsibility to the
whole to keep the galleries open to the public six days
a week from 12:30 to 4:30.
The Board asks all exhibitors coming in with their
work on the 27th and 28th to bring their appointment
calendars with them so they can sign up on the Bulletin
Board for duty in the next two or three months.
Each sitter will be responsible for getting his own
substitute when necessary.
The Bologneses will be sitting three days a week
which will take off some of the pressure.
We shall miss the Sowers and their gracious handling
of their various responsibilities since last June
1st. Syd’s health has improved to the point where he
can now fill a desk job in his former place of employment.
A SPECIAL SHOW FOR MAY
The Henschels are combining their efforts to hang
a “Husband & Wife” Show this month. Charles, who
has long made photography his hobby, will display
studies of Indians made in and around San Diego
county. The pictures are size 16 x 20” and finished in
warm sepia tones.
Philipa, one of our prolific monthly exhibitors, will
show works done in watercolor and oil. She received
her BA in 1945 at the California College of Arts and
Crafts, and is a member of the Carrousel Art Gallery,
Encinitas.

CORRECTION — THEME FOR MAY To correct
misunderstanding of the theme for this month it is
think a moment it does make sense.
EXHIBITORS — PLEASE NOTICE
The storage of previous months’ hangings continues
to be a problem for the committee. Solutions to this
problem in other guilds is compulsory commercial
storage at $6.50 per month or the sale of the pictures
at auction after 30 days storage, the money to go to
Guild expenses.
