More readers than the rest put together! 22 SEPTEMBER 2015 | TAXI 17 LETTERS STAR LETTERS Marilyn, You’re a Star Aformer Call Over partner of mine, now a butter girl of eight months picked up two Chinese tourists at King’s cross the other day. They spoke little English but managed to explain they wanted to be taken to a hotel in West Ham. The cabbie had worked in the travel bookings industry for a good few years and was racking her brains to place the hotel they wanted. Anyway, she took them to their destination after they produced a bit of paper with the address on it. It turned out to be a house and the curtains were tattered and the windows filthy. It looked a right dump. She phoned the number the visitors had, and found out the place was a "guesthouse.” There was no reply when they knocked on the door and when they telephoned the proprietor they were told someone would be along shortly. By now the young Chinese couple were getting more and more anxious at the Heart of Gold Icame across some extraordinary kindness from a taxi driver yesterday. The driver's name is Rob Jones and his cab no. is 74243. I got in his cab at King’s Cross Station and I asked him to take me to the Macmillan Cancer Centre. We didn't talk but when we got there I went to pay him the fare, he told me to put the amount in the Cancer charity box. I was “Extremely kind driver” Ijust want to say “thank you” to the very kind driver who stopped and helped my 81 year old husband who had tripped in Flood Street on Monday, September 7. You are very kind indeed. Tessa Toop War and Peace Ihave been a London taxi driver for nearly 25 years and would like to comment on the regular stats and comments in TAXI’s the Cab You Drive column on the dropping number of cab drivers. The articles are always saying that it is such a shame that numbers are dropping but I can’t understand why. prospect of staying in this hellhole, as they had booked there accommodation online, so they had no real idea what they were letting themselves in for. Anyway, after talking to them, it soon became apparent they did not want to stay there. Using her knowledge of the tourist industry she rang a few people and got them booked into a hotel in the South Kensington area. Not only that, but by the time she had got them to their new hotel the meter was showing over one hundred quid. She did not have the heart to take that and knocked a fair lump off as she did not want their visit to London to start off with an expensive, bad experience. Marilyn Wall you are a star and a credit to the cab trade. Ian Faulds, Knowledge associate scheme member truly overcome by this gesture and people need to know of his kindness. I ’m am on a quest to contact John Brosnan, a taxi driver who I (an ex cab driver) did a 285 mile trek known as the “Pennine Way” with in 1977. There was a programme on TV recently featuring a well-known explorer who stated it was one of the hardest things he has done. I lost contact with John after we £20 note mix up Itook a black cab from the Fulham Road to Castelnau, Barnes, on September 10, and felt compelled to write to TAXI about a mix up that happened with the payment. On arrival at around 7.45pm, I handed the driver a £20 note and requested a receipt. Once in my house, I discovered to my horror that I had in my hand both the receipt and the £20 note. Whose got the Hot Wheels? Afriend of mine sent me a picture of a customised taxi spotted at the demo calling for TfL to regulate fairly in London, on September 5. I’m trying to find out who the owner is and thought I would write to TAXI for help. If the owner could get in touch for a quick chat I would be very grateful. Leads passed to me from two drivers have given me hope. I have been given a more recent picture of Robert which I hope may unearth more information, as we still seem to have come to a dead end. did a few more long distant treks, but watching the aforementioned programme has fuelled my feelings to meet up again and talk about our past adventures. Gerald Stecker I had assumed the driver had taken the payment, but somehow there had been a terrible mix up. I did try to run out after him, but he had already driven off. I feel so badly about it and don’t want him to think that I tried to cheat him. Anyway, I have now donated the fare to the London Taxi Drivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Children by way of an apology. Elizabeth Fergusson I know he was on a committee for cabbies where this picture was taken in 2003/4. The consensus is that he emigrated to Australia, possibly Perth, around 10-12 years ago. His last known address in England was Marlow in Buckinghamshire. He was called Wembley Bob by his colleagues & was always known as Bobby Wilson and worked out of Heathrow. The gentlemen who have helped me so far say he was a really nice decent chap, which makes me believe that someone somewhere must be or had been keeping in contact with him after he left the cab trade, even in Australia.
