SERRA STATUE VANDALIZED ON DAY OF CANONIZATION CEREMONY<br />

THE MORNING of Junipero Serra’s canonization Sept.<br />
23, residents at the north end of <strong>Carmel</strong> awakened to see<br />
famous local sculptor Jo Mora’s statue of Serra vandalized<br />
with black paint and eggs. By the time police got to the scene<br />
of the crime at the intersection of Serra and Camino del<br />
Monte — which marks the north entrance to the city — nearby<br />
resident Glen Mozingo had already cleaned much of the<br />
paint and debris off the sculpture.<br />
“I worked on the statue for about two hours and removed<br />
most of the black paint,” he said. “However, the statue will<br />
need to be completely redone,” because when he cleaned off<br />
the vandals’ paint, he also removed the brown paint of Serra’s<br />
robe.<br />
Mozingo is vice president of the <strong>Carmel</strong> Woods<br />
Association, which keeps the small park area of the Serra<br />
statue clean, decorates it with pumpkins and poinsettias during<br />
the holidays, and takes care of the general appearance of<br />
