the neighborhood.
He described the vandalism as “conduct
of the ill-informed and misguided who
choose to destroy Christian icons,” and said
the residents were “surprised by the actions
of domestic religious zealots.”
“The faithful community will not be
harmed by the actions of those who choose to
destroy the art of a community, or the symbols
of any denomination of faith,” he continued.
“We will instead do what we can to protect
our community heritage and forgive
those who act out of ignorance or hatred.”
The sculpture, completed by Mora in
1926, was commissioned by Pebble Beach
Company founder S.F.B. Morse to commemorate
the opening of the Carmel Woods real
estate development. It was previously vandalized
in December 1999, around the time of
Serra’s beatification, when someone defaced
it and the surrounding stone with black spray
paint.
In that instance, association members paid
for its restoration, which was completed by a
local painting contractor — Mike Calhoun,
who is also the city’s police chief.
