In 2000, Faia and Bayless formed
International Health Emissaries, a nonprofit
organization dedicated to two goals. One is
to provide medical and dental care at no cost
to indigent people throughout the world.
Second, they provide the opportunity for
American volunteers to positively represent
their country. Volunteers gain further appreciation
and understanding of other countries,
as well as their own, and they get the chance
to develop relationships with people around
the world.
“We call ourselves emissaries,” said
Bayless, “because we go out into the world
to make a difference. When it seems like the
world is going to hell in a hand basket, we
sentiment with anybody we work with —
only gratitude.”
When the emissaries travel, sometimes
with as many as 17 volunteers from this
community, they pack big red bags with
clothes and toys to give to their patients.
They also bring dental tools and materials,
plus plenty of plastic wrap, with which they
cover desks and tables — wherever they can
find space to work on a patient.
“Where we go, nobody else goes, said
Faia. “We are in the jungle, in desolate,
scrabby, awful places, with wonderful people,
whose lives are on the line. When they
see us, their faces brighten, they clap for us
and hug us as they ask, ‘Why are you coming
here?’ We come for the people, and our own
lives are better for it.”
