Habitia H-Club / IDIN Architects
Located near seaside context and rich natural ecologies
of the mangrove beach of Bangkok’s outskirt - Bang
Khun Thain, Habitia-H Club facilitates a recreational
function as a clubhouse and a gateway entrance for a housing
estate “Sansiri”.
Habitia-H Club is a one-storey building situated in a
1,750-square meter site area with a 302-square meter floor
area. The owner’s requirement is to create the architecture
demonstrating an impressive impact with the combination
function of a leisure center and a main gateway.
How to design and combine these two different characteristics
of space between private and public, indoor and outdoor;
becomes an interesting condition that need to be solved with a
new approach of concept design.
To cope with a problem of space arrangement, the architects
experimented the concept of plane twist and derived with a
huge simple twist shape, which can answer all the limitations.
However, the construction was the most challenging process.
The technique using reinforced concrete casting with GRP
panels (Glass reinforced plastic) was employed to create the
smooth curvilinear structure.
Inspired by gentle curve of the beach along the mangroves
forest context, the architects design a concrete shell structure
serving as an entrance and clubhouse of the housing estate
transforming the building into a curvilinear form.
004
The facilities of this building include a living area, a swimming
pool, and a fitness room. An open-plan arrangement with the
inside out approach allows the nice ventilation and the quality
of semi-outdoor space. A reflection pool helps create relaxing
atmosphere and expand the vision and perception of the users.
The characteristic of wooden stakes in the coastal area was
employed to use as the landscape elements and columns in an
interior space as well as pillars for the metal lattice covering
the terrace. An interesting shape and form of the seashore
plantation like mangroves was carefully selected to create a
pattern of the carbon steel square tubes.
This part of steel structure uses metal lattice to create a quality
of transparency for the semi-outdoor area and transform it into
a functional and interesting space.
005
The lighting design concept derives from the inspiration
of fireflies. Since a large group of fireflies represent how
abundance of the mangrove forest, this idea was employed to
repre- sent the richness and plentifulness of the project.
At night, metaphorically, the light glow under the concrete
shell transforms this building into a hive of fireflies. Moreover,
creating the different ambience, the building allows sunlight
penetrates into the shell in daytime and the interior light spot
lighten up the shell at night like the hive of fireflies.
The design presents an iconic expres- sion for the otherwise
functional architecture of the housing estate’s gateway entrance
and leisure club.
The Cutting Technologies team was then given the job of
laser cutting the thousands of abstract shapes from clear
SCHÖCK MEETS HIGH LOAD
CANTILEVER WALKWAY CHALLENGE
Kidwells Estate at Maidenhead, in Berkshire, is undergoing major regeneration involving
seven new blocks, which vary from three to six storeys of structural concrete frame. Now
known as Parklands, this landmark £27.1 million project is a scheme for One Housing
and replaces seven 1960s built apartment blocks.
Long cantilever walkways service multiple flats and the unusual design demands
presented a technical challenge for Schöck, who supplied the structural thermal breaks.
The design required as much natural light as possible in the areas around the walkways,
so extensive light wells are introduced at regular intervals along the length of the
galleries – effectively a series of elongated spaces, separating the walkways from the
building for large sections. This means far fewer structural connection points between
the walkways and the building than would normally be anticipated.
The walkways are cantilever concrete construction into internal reinforced concrete
frame; and because of the restricted connectivity point opportunities, the Schöck
structural thermal breaks had to resist a much greater shear load than would be the case
with a more conventional design.
Schöck resolved the various performance issues by designing in its type HPC Isokorb.
It is a product utilised only if horizontal, tension and compression forces are present in
the design – and it is necessary to integrate the type QP90+QP90 Isokorb as well, for
linear or point connection to support high shear loads. The result was a completely
secure thermally insulated load-bearing connection at all the key structural points.
The Schöck Isokorb range provides BBA Certification, LABC Registration and meets
full compliance with all relevant UK building regulations.
A comprehensive 236 page ‘Technical Guide’ is available on request, as is the new free
‘Thermal Bridging Guide’..
Koster Long Lasting TPO Roofing
Now in the UK
Koster are now selling TPO single
ply roofing membranes under the
Koster brand name, having previously
manufactured exclusively for another
well know brand. With decades of
manufacturing experience Koster have
developed a product that is long lasting
and guaranteed for up to 25 years, as well
as being environmentally friendly and
plasticiser free.
Koster TPO single ply roofing
membranes are flexible and easy to
work with, ensuring a quick and reliable
application. The products are resistant
to UV rays and high mechanical stress:
the crack bridging ability withstanding
temperature induced movement.
The flexible TPO membranes are
mechanically fixed, fully bonded or
ballasted and in each case the seams
are hot air welded (the thermoplastic
characteristics of the membrane create an
inseparable, durable and homogeneous
overlap).
Koster laboratories in Germany
recently tested a 14 year old piece of
the TPO membrane recovered from a
deconstructed roof. The results proved
to be extremely impressive: after 14
years of service the product showed no
surface deterioration and the old material
was still within specification. A weld
test between the old and new TPO,
resulted in a perfect weld. Nigel Day
MD of Koster Aquatecnic said, “We are
very proud of these test results as they
demonstrate that after a time period when
many roofing systems are starting to fail,
Koster TPO is unscathed and looking
good for many more years of trouble free
service.”
With sustainability now being an
ecological and economic reality for
architects and builders, Koster TPO
roofing provides a long lasting and
durable solution. TPO membranes are
free of PVC and plasticiser; contain no
harmful halogens, are non-toxic in water
and can be continually recycled.
Alex Lynn, Koster Aquatecnic Technical
Manager explains, “Over the last fifteen
years Koster Aquatecnic have delivered
unbeatable levels of service and support
in the field of structural waterproofing.
This will be no different for the TPO
roofing. From CPD seminars for
architects to training of applicators,
we always provide the information
and advice needed to ensure that our
membranes are specified appropriately
and installed to the highest standard”.
With proven, long lasting TPO
membranes, a network of experienced
roofing contractors and a commitment to
providing world class training and advice
to architects, Koster Aquatecnic look set
to become a major new player in the UK
roofing industry.
Introduces SoftPlan 2016, the ideal residential and light commercial building design solution.
SoftPlan 2016 has all the tools of previous platforms and adds a host of new features
With a click of the mouse, you can quickly generate
Presentation Views from floor plans found in the Model list.
Presentation Views provide a top-down view of the drawing in
3D and can be generated in any of SoftPlan's 3D modes.
Similar to other 3D views in SoftPlan, Presentation Views can
be saved as SoftPlan drawings and detailed with paint and
construction notes. Presentation Views can also be added to
Plan Set Pages and printed along with your other floor plans,
3D images, and construction drawings. Each recorded
movement becomes a frame on the timeline, building an
animation that can be played back and saved. Add, remove, or
modify frames using the timeline's editing tools and output
settings to create detailed walkthrough presentations.
AutoCAD to SoftPlan Conversion Wizard
and an attractive, interactive 3D display.
The AutoCAD to SoftPlan Conversion Wizard offers an
unprecedented level of convenience for importing DWG and
DXF file formats into SoftPlan. Import a single drawing,
multiple drawings, or an entire project by following a series of
easy steps to convert simple lines into walls and other SoftPlan
items. Once you have selected a file to convert, SoftPlan
creates a preview tab that automatically updates as you work.
You can then choose which AutoCAD layers to import and. how
to import them, change wall lines into the wall types you want
to use, cleanup wall generation issues, and convert imported
symbols into SoftPlan symbols and openings. In minutes, take
a "flat" two-dimensional AutoCAD drawing and convert it into a
SoftPlan three-dimensional "BIM" drawing complete with walls,
doors, windows and symbols.
HDR Tone Mapping
When the Tonal Mapping option is checked, SoftPlan uses an
HDR (High Dynamic Range) to perform more detailed lighting
calculations and then applies Tonal Mapping techniques to
convert that image to one appropriate for display on computer
monitors and printing. This causes images that would normally
appear washed out to have more pleasing lighting variations.
Gamma Correction
Gamma correction is a technique used to correct the way
images display on monitors. When applied, it yields a brighter
looking image.
Auto Paint Elevations
Elevations can be automatically painted with textures used on
the 3D mode. This one-click process gives your drawings the
finished, professional look of coloured construction documents
and prevents you from taking time to paint individual sections.
Texture opacity can be edited to show more or less of the paint
pattern. Changes made to the 3D model can be easily updated
on elevation drawings and vice versa. SoftPlan's model paint
will put your colour printer to use producing better looking,
easier-to-understand drawings in less time.
3D Indirect Lighting
Indirect Lighting is light that reflects off surfaces onto
surrounding objects to produce a more realistic image.
Direct Contribution and Indirect Contribution sliders allow you
to choose how much direct and indirect light you want to blend
into the final image.
A Guide To Securing Planning Permission
For Self-Build Homes By Leading
Structural Insurance Provider CRL.
WHILE building your own home is
an exciting prospect, navigating the
complexities of the British planning process
can be a real turn-off for many prospective self-builders.
However planning doesn't have to be a nightmare. Steve
Mansour, Group CEO at CRL, talks you through the
process and explains the types of permissions a selfbuild
project will need.
WITH government moves to encourage self-build and
the influx of TV programmes like Grand Designs the
UK public's desire to construct their own homes has
literally gone through the roof.
The appetite for self-build is clear – with around 12,000
new homes (or between 7-10 per cent of the UK's new
housing stock) thought to be constructed in this way
every year. Support for self-build projects has also been
one of the government's key housing initiatives, making
loans available to community groups and releasing
public land to accommodate new houses.
An introduction to self-build planning
Unless you're fortunate enough to be an architect or
qualified designer yourself, after you've found a suitable
plot of land (although you don't necessarily need to have
bought it to gain planning permissions), you'll need to
hire in some professionals.
Some self-builders opt to use a project manager as a way
to run the entire project at arm's length, while others opt
to pick architects, designs and surveyors themselves.
This year the new Construction (Design & Management)
Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) were introduced and
came into force on the 6 April 2015. There is now a
requirement for domestic client’s to understand the
Health and Safety requirements of a project.
However, their duties as a client are normally transferred
to the contractor, on a single contractor project; or the
principal contractor, on a project involving more than
one contractor. However, the domestic client can choose
to have a written agreement with the principal designer
to carry out the client duties. So having a professional
team to guide you through the planning process is
essential.
Whatever route you go down, it's in your best interest
to kick off the planning process as soon as you
can. Consulting with the local authority's planning
department – either yourself or by proxy – is a great way
to determine what you will, and won't, be able to do.
Your local planning department is likely to have some
preliminary guidance on their website, if not a full copy
of the 'Local Plan' that informs planning constraints in
the area.
However, councils also offer more formal preapplication
advice for a fee, although the cost – and
quality – of this can differ greatly from authority to
authority. This should hopefully give you a better
idea of the key issues that may arise and take steps to
sidestep or tackle these as necessary.
This guidance can be used to inform your design and
when you're happy with the plans, you can formally
submit them for planning approval. This will typically
cost under £200, but can differ depending on where your
new home is to be situated.
Timing
While central government has set a target of eight weeks
for planning applications to be assessed, some councils
are better than others. However, there are financial
incentives in place to encourage this and even the worst
performers shouldn't make you wait an onerous length
of time for a response.
You will be able to track the progress of your
application through the local authority's website and find
out if any problems have been identified. Local planners
are highly risk averse and in some cases it can be worth
withdrawing and re-submitting an application that
encounters difficulties, rather than waiting for refusal.
However, we'd always advise consulting with a
professional, if possible, before making any rash
decisions regarding your application.
Refusal and appeals
Having your self-build plans refused by a local authority
can jeopardise the chances of your project ever coming
to fruition in its current form. Given the increasing
pressure local planners are under, previous refusals can
fuel future ones – making a proposed site untenable in
the eyes of the local authority.
You can however appeal to the Department of
Communities and Local Government's Planning
Inspectorate if you think the application has been
refused out of hand.
This comes with its own set of complications and you're
likely to have to wait for at least a year for a response
after lodging your appeal. It is well worth talking to a
professional consultant before deciding how to handle
rejection.
Post-planning
If everything goes smoothly and you're granted
permission without any constraints – the paperwork,
unfortunately, doesn't end there.
You will still need to ensure the project adheres to UK
Building Regulations, a code which governs the safety
and structural integrity of a proposed building.
Unlike planning permission – Building Regulations are
less open to interpretation and your project will succeed
or fail based on whether it meets their criteria or not.
You can find out more about these – and how to go
about gaining approval – at the government's planning
portal at: www.planningportal.gov.uk
Finally as someone who sees successful self-build
projects come to fruition regularly, I hope you are not
deterred from building your own home. Constructing
your own home is an exciting, and a highly rewarding,
project and if the above guidelines are followed should
be a relatively smooth process.
The Gables
These existing buildings have been radically transformed
by completely rethinking the internal configuration,
punching larger openings through the building envelope
and introducing private courtyards. This draws natural light
deep into the floor plates and enriches the new residential use.
Located in a north-west London courtyard tucked between a
Victorian terrace and main railway lines, this landlocked site
presented a great design challenge. Our task was to convert
and remodel a run-down industrial compound from the 1950’s
into contemporary residential accommodation. The buildings,
once a mechanic’s garage and office, today comprise a
generous open-plan three-bedroom house and two one-bedroom
apartments.
Externally the buildings were re-faced, providing on the
one hand the opportunity to create cavity walls and hence
substantially upgrade the thermal performance; on the other
018
Patalab Architecture
a new façade material could be introduced, uniting what
was previously a patchwork arrangement into a balanced
composition. Responding to the courtyard setting a reflective
façade material was used that glistens in the direct sunlight and
give the development a jewel-like appearance. The shimmering
surface changes with the light conditions and injects an element
of surprise and nobility into the main courtyard.
The existing predominant material in the courtyard is brick,
used on the rear facades of the Victorian terrace. This is in stark
contrast to the ornate rendered front elevations, a treatment
that Victorians esteemed. Our intention was to connect the
development with its setting and pick up on this front : rear
material relationship. Therefore we opted for brickwork as
the courtyard facing material of the new residential units,
however, because these elevations are the front facades of the
new development we used the most elegant version of this
traditional material – coated with a metallic bronze glazing.
Along the rear elevation facing the railway lines we used a dark
insulating render, inverting the Victorian strategy.
019
Architects: Patalab Architecture www.patalab.com Photographs: Lyndon Douglas
In order to distinguish the different parts of the development
and to give each building its own identity, we introduced
asymmetrical gables to the front facing elevations. Even the
previously flat vaulted passageway into the courtyard picks up
this theme and received an inverted gable.
Brick is also the predominant material within the interior and
was used as a device to record the buildings’ history. As walls
were moved, ground floor slabs lowered and ceilings pushed up
to maximize the height on the ground floor, changes in the bond
of the white washed brick walls mark the previous position
of these elements. The result is a richly textured internal
perimeter, imbued with the memory of place. This is contrasted
with polished and rough concrete finishes, a coffered ceiling
and Oak panelling.
The ground floor of the main residence accommodates
the living, dining and kitchen areas. The open floor plan
is structured by three elements: large openings bringing in
the natural light, a sunken seating area set into the polished
concrete floor and a wide staircase leading to the upper floors.
Low Carbon, High Thermal Efficiency Pipe
for Plymouth City Heating Scheme
Flexenergy's energy-saving Flexalen pipe was the ideal
solution for Plymouth City Council when a new district
heating scheme meant re-routing the pipe network from
new gas boilers to serve offices in the Council House.
Plymouth City Council specified Flexalen polybutylene
pre-insulated pipe for the project – choosing the technology
for its enhanced thermal properties, low embodied
carbon, ease of installation and 50 year performance
warranty. Contractors ECS have installed the network
comprising of 31in no 12 metre lengths of pipework and
16 pre-fabricated bends, insulation kits and stub flanges.
Polybutylene is the only plastic pipe heat network system
that can be fully fusion welded. This, together with its
proven longevity, was a key factor in laying the 372
metres of pipe from the Guildhall, across a pedestrianised
area to the Council House.
Benefits of LED Lighting –
Up Front and Personal
In the world of lighting, LED has become an unstoppable
force. It is now difficult to envisage a refurbishment or
new build that does not feature LED lights within its
lighting scheme. There are huge benefits in terms of
energy and cost savings with lighting bills cut by up to
90%. Yet the widespread adoption of LED lamps and
fixtures has been held back by confusion among specifiers
and commissioning clients. British manufacturer
Integral LED has chosen a novel approach in an attempt
to demystify the process of retrofit lighting by presenting
the tangible bonus of a swap to LED upfront and online.
Contractors and homebuilders can now access a free
energy saving calculator that allows everyone to assess the
benefits of LED retro-fit lights. The website is open to all
and does not require any buying obligation on behalf of
the user.
Advanced Provides New Fire System
Simulator to Leading London Airport
London City Airport has recently
opened a new simulation training
room, mirroring its fire system
which features panels from leading
manufacturer, Advanced.
Opened in 1987, the airport, situated at
the former Royal Docks in Newham,
is the only airport to be located within
the M25. Servicing over 3.6 million
passengers annually, the airport has ten
operating airlines that travel to over 45
destinations.
The complex is already protected by
Advanced MxPro panels and the new
training room will allow staff to learn
their use and explore various scenarios in
a controlled and isolated environment.
The training room incorporates a
two loop MxPro 4 panel and graphic
package that will allow the staff to
receive necessary training in the use of
the airport systems. MxPro panels were
originally selected due to their reputation
for outstanding quality, reliability and
ease of use.
Robin Kemp, Advanced’s sales manager
for the south east region, commented:
“With Advanced panels already installed
in London City Airport, the addition of
the training room and the MxPro 4 panel
for training purposes allows staff at the
airport to be trained in the latest aspects
of fire safety.
In a 24-hour facility, it’s hard to do
training using the main system, so this
means that all types of incident can be
mocked up without inconveniencing
passengers.”
MxPro is the fire industry’s leading
multiprotocol fire solution, offering
customers a choice of two panel ranges,
four detector protocols and a completely
open installer network that enjoys free
training and support.
MxPro panels can be used in single loop,
single panel format or easily configured
into multi-loop, high speed, 200 panel
networks covering huge areas and
thousands of field devices.
MxPro 4 is fully compliant with EN54
Parts 2 and 4, and backed up with
Advanced’s renowned customer care
and technical support. The MxPro 5
is Advanced’s highest performance
analogue panel. It is EN54 2, 4 & 13
approved and is backward compatible
with MxPro 4, offering long-term
security for MxPro customers.
Advanced is a world leader in the
development and manufacture of
intelligent fire systems. The legendary
performance, quality and ease-of-use of
its products sees Advanced specified in
locations all over the world, from single
panel installations to large multi-site
networks.
Advanced’s products include complete
fire detection systems, multi-protocol fire
panels, extinguishing control, fire paging
and false alarm management systems.
Bicester Community Hospital
is Officially Opened
www.ibigroup.com
Bicester Community Hospital has been officially opened at a special commemorative ceremony.
This £5million ‘boutique’ hospital designed by architects
IBI Group comprises 12-beds, diagnostic facilities,
first aid unit, out-of-hours services, therapies and an
outpatient department. It has provided the locality of Bicester
with a first-class facility that will meet the needs of future
generations and the increasing population of the town.
“The design solution places patients and their wellbeing at the
core of the concept to create an exceptional care experience,”
said IBI’s Justin Harris. “End users benefit from a high
standard accommodation, which provides a spacious well
planned environment that promotes quality of care, integrated
working and a sustainable approach to healthcare delivery.”
The new hospital was part funded by selling a portion of the old
hospital site to enable the development of 14 new houses. IBI
Group made this possible through an effective masterplan that
allows the new hospital to grow and flex whilst maintaining the
beautiful surrounding landscape.
The new community hospital is highly sustainable and responds
to the Bicester Eco-Town initiative, and visually demonstrates
its passive design philosophy through its architectural
articulation of features such as solar chimneys. In 2015 the
scheme received the Gold Award at the Green Apple Awards.
The project was delivered through a PPP arrangement with
Kajima Partnerships as the main developer.
Winkley Workshop
Kirkwood McCarthy
Winkley Workshop is a new three storey 2-bedroom
residence on the site of a former upholsterer’s
workshop measuring 12m long by 3.7m. Upon
this small plot, a 2-bedroom open plan home with strong
interconnectivity between internal and external spaces has been
achieved.
In order to accommodate the required internal and external areas
the original footprint was increased by digging a new basement
and extending the roof, which had to be cranked according to
daylight angles to protect neighbouring properties. To the street
the building is a modest addition, yet upon entry the open-ness
and scale of the property is revealed. To each floor the plan
was arranged to prioritise space according to what is used and
enjoyed.
The layout was conceived as a vertical sequence from public
to private. At basement level an open plan kitchen, dining and
living space is designed as an extension of the outdoor area. A
brick herringbone floor flows out into the rear private courtyard
with a double height void and oversized glazing to blur the
delineation between inside, allowing ample daylight and views
to this lower level.
The middle mezzanine level is interconnected with the basement
level via a library bookcase that faces into the double height
void. A curtain partition allows this room to flex its function as
a study extension of the living area or a private sleeping area.
An open plan master with ensuite to the top level leads onto a
private balcony, continuing this pursuit of light filled, outdoor
based living that distinguishes the residence.
The experience of the property is open and voluminous,
achieved through the strategic interplay of floorplates that
enable lines of sight through the house. Services and back-ofhouse
functions are located out-of-sight under stairs or in zones
with poor daylight levels so that the living and bedroom areas
are unobstructed and light filled. Internal walls were deliberately
avoided to enhance the perceived openness, and thus curtains
and joinery are used for privacy and delineation where possible.
The minimal presence of internal walls and use of setbacks
and cutouts in floorplates, paired with extensive glazing, gives
a sense of lightness and openness that belies the scale of the
property and its dense urban setting.
DRIVING DAYLIGHT HOME
Improved energy efficiency and an attractive
interior are essential requirements for high
performance building projects. This is particularly
important for car dealership showrooms, such as
this new Toyota dealership in Colchester, for
which Space Projects were concept architects.
Here, Structura UK Ltd provided and installed
the Kalwall translucent daylighting system at high
level to improve thermal performance and direct
controlled daylight into the showroom. For the
same reason, this glazing system is widely specified
across the UK in many other types of retail
facility, such as showrooms, shops and supermarkets
as well as warehouses and factories.
The popularity of Kalwall is derived from its
ability to diffuse daylighting evenly into an
interior, thereby creating a well-lit and aesthetically
pleasing ambience. Internally illuminated at night,
it will also emit an ethereal and attractive glow.
Unlike conventional glazing, Kalwall eliminates
shadows and glare and the stark contrasts of light
and shade. The system also enhances simplicity
by eliminating the need for blinds, curtains or
solar control. Even on cloudy days, the interior is
flooded with natural daylight, which means less
artificial lighting and, because Kalwall is highly
and green roofs all add
to the buildings low
im pact combining
traditional Indian architecture
and carvings
with ‘green’ technology.
As with all the finishes from Abet Laminati, the range
meets or exceeds all European and British performance
standards for resistance to wear, heat, moisture, impact
and scratching. The compact grade laminate from Abet
Ltd’s UK & Ireland Collection is available in 3660 x
1610mm sheet sizes in a 12mm thickness and is widely
used for cubicles, lockers and changing rooms where
high quality performance and design are carefully
crafted together to create an attractive visual experience.
One Under Three Roof
BYTR architecten
BYTR architects designd the extension of this charming
detached house in the old town of Zeist (NL). The
characteristic contour of the existing home is used as a
reference for the extension of 19th century house. Two modern
gable roofs, together with the historical mansard roof make a
surprising composition.
The extension of the house has doubled the living space.
Despite the increase in volume, you experience the new
building from the street as a little addition. The extension is
hidden behind the existing building. Also inside you experience
the expressive roof shape which creates a spacious and
contemporary atmosphere.
028
Architects: BYTR architecten - www.bytr.nl Photographs: Ossip van Duivenbode www.ossip.nl
The monolithic extension contrasts in materials and detailing of
the existing house. The relief of the old brick walls defines the
contrast with the anthracite flat façade panel of the extension.
The interior also shows the contrast between old and new.
Through a large sliding façade you step into the modern living
kitchen. A tight plastered ceiling and concrete floor stands
in contrast to the original wooden beams and an oak parquet.
Classic and modern brought together in a charming way.
ARCKIT MODEL SYSTEM
Arckit is a groundbreaking new
architectural model system that allows
users to physically design, build and
modify working models radically faster
than ever before. Architects can now
bring their ideas to life with speed
and precision, inspiring spontaneous
creativity and a practical approach to
designing multiple structures.
The reusable interconnecting components
use no glue and are completely modular,
making it possible to create a diverse
range of scaled structures that can be
used as physical working models to
communicate architectural ideas and
include clients in the design process –
as well as for builders, developers and
interior designers to plan projects and
showcase finished work.
Made in Ireland, Arckit is designed
by architects for architects. Founder
Damien Murtagh says: “I have always
appreciated the value of working
models for sharing ideas with clients
and bringing my own designs to life.
The problem is that they are often time
consuming and expensive to make. I
wanted to develop a professional system
that would bridge the gap between
working models and digital models.”
Designed for everyday use, Arckit is
compatible with 3D computer models
and allows users to recreate physical
designs using SketchUp versions of
Arckit components. Arckit is based on
contemporary building techniques and
every component is made to a standard
1.2m/4ft modular grid to a scale, so it
also allows for easy conversion between
metric and imperial.
If you’re looking for a way to proudly
display past projects, Arckit can be
finished with realistic surface patterns
supplied by real building companies.
These textures (such as timber, stone,
terracotta, metal, brick, and concrete)
can be downloaded from an online
Arckitexture Library and printed to the
supplied self-adhesive Arckit media
sheets ready to be measured, cut and
applied.
From renowned architecture practices to
university courses, Arckit is fast building
a strong reputation as a flexible and
creative design tool. As well as listings
with retailers such as Harrods, Barnes &
Nobles and RIBA bookstores, Arckit has
also gained worldwide recognition when
it was shortlisted for The Irish Times
InterTrade Innovation Awards, and later
won the prestigious Red Dot Design
Award 2015.
Grundig’s GEBM34001 Is One Of The
World’s Most Energy Efficient And
Silent Ovens.
Open plan kitchens are becoming increasingly popular
with prospective buyers, and although they are beautifully
designed they are not always practical.
Interior designers can go above and beyond expectations
by carefully selecting appliances that are quiet and
therefore ideal for open living spaces.
Our Grundig GEBM34001 is one of the world’s most
energy efficient and silent ovens. Operating at 41 dB, it
makes less than half the amount of noise of a standard
oven. In addition all Grundig appliances come with
signature keyboard style features enabling designers to
create a clean and uniform look when planning a kitchen.
P3 Comforts – Perfect Comfort
That Is Perfectly Cool
P3 Comforts is a complete bathroom range that modifies
simple geometric forms to render them aesthetically
calming and extremely comfortable to use.
A characteristic feature of the design is the raised tap
platform on the basin and bath which separates the wet and
dry areas and provides generous space for storing
bathroom essentials. Basins and baths appear almost
rimless with maximised interiors for greater volume and
freedom of movement. All lines in the collection are
flowing and seamless with soft corners, no unwelcome
light reflections and clever creative touches.
Winter Problems Solved With
demista and Cosyfloor
Steam can be a problem. Think steamed up spectacles when out
walking in cold weather. Or steamed up car windscreen, heat on the
inside, freezing outside, and the bathroom mirror! All that constant
wiping, blowing and cleaning. The first two occurrences are
difficult to solve, but the steamed up bathroom mirror is a problem
that is easily solved. Install demista heated mirror pads.
Cold feet after a warm bath or shower? Step on to a gently heated
floor surface with Cosfloor underfloor heating. Cosyfloor can be used
in all areas where water may be spilt, such as bathrooms, kitchens
and conservatories.
Whether building new or refurbishing existing properties, aïr the
impressive range of high performance bi-fold and lift & slide
doors, offers more to architects, developers and self-builders. Jay
why it’s perfect for today’s homes.
aïr-Craft
Wide span doors are an integral part of many new build or
refurbishment projects. But finding the right products can be
hard. In November 2013 aïr came onto the market. Highly
engineered, aïr spans wider, runs smoother and performs better.
Designed for modern living, aïr wide span doors offer a world of
boundless possibilities in terms of style and efficiency. The slim
frame gives a larger glazed area and that brings in more light.
The smooth operation means however big and heavy the glass,
only the lightest of touches is needed to slide open the aïr doors.
They’ve been tested to the extreme for weather tightness and
security. And all aïr doors come with a 25 year guarantee.
This extreme engineering means aïr has superior performance.
The timeless beauty combined with strong, clean lines makes aïr
a captivating choice.
aïr is exclusively manufactured in the UK by Everglade
It takes great pride in having a highly trained team of fabricators.
Top London aïr retailers took down a PVCu P shaped
conservatory and replaced it a sleek grey aluminium
aïr doors to make up the glazed walls. A 6.7 metre
span lift & slide door using just three panes opens
seamlessly with a low threshold to the stone patio and
the garden beyond.
Along the back and to the side, a smaller version.
Finishing touches include the aluminium cladding
to the corner pillar to perfectly match the aïr doors.
Topped with a sleek modern aluminium and glass
Victoria Park, E9 / Scenario
Photographs: Matt Clayton
The property is a two storey
semi-detached house post war
construction in the middle of
a row of terrace houses. Our clients, a
young couple, came to us to redesign the
ground floor as the previous layout was
not suitable for their style of living. The
areas were dark and segregated and they
ended up not using them at all. The house
had previously a rear poorly made and
non-insulated conservatory raised three
steps from the rear garden, and a rear
extension with ancillary spaces.
We used the front side area for bicycle
storage so that they would not pass the
bikes through the house. The entrance
space got redesigned to allow for a built
in bench with shoe storage underneath. A
hidden-when-open fire door creates the
only barrier with the rest of the ground
floor open plan.
The reception area remained at the
front of the house. The wall next to the
previously non-functional fireplace got
demolished to allow for passage and
view to the kitchen. The fireplace got
replaced with a two sided ''window''
fireplace to allow both the reception
area and the kitchen to benefit from it. A
single wall division provides privacy for
the shower room area on the ground floor
and at the same time acts as a catwalk
on the top for the couple's two cats with
access from the main staircase going up.
The kitchen floor is lowered to allow for
a mental separation from the rest of the
areas and its polished concrete with the
reflective surface adds to the ambient
light. A central island provides some
additional work space and flexibility for
the rest of the space as the kitchen table
can slide and hide in it.
A newly created space next to the kitchen
is being used as a Japanese style seating/
work area a bit more isolated from the
rest of the areas but directly connected
at the same time and can also assume
various uses. This seating area and the
kitchen have now direct connection to
the garden with two large sliding folding
doors.
The new extension incorporates a green
roof and a large skylight above the
seating area.
Design (SBID), the Timber Research and
Development Association (TRADA) and
the Zero Carbon Hub.
What’s more, with a huge variety of onsite
after-hours entertainment planned,
UK Construction Week is also the
perfect chance to relax with colleagues
and peers. Some of the additional
features include award ceremonies, a
beer festival, comedy nights, rockaoke,
big breakfasts and a casino night.
What’s on at the show?
Working in partnership with these
prominent industry names and placing
a firm emphasis on knowledge sharing,
discussion and debate, UK Construction
Week has organised a comprehensive
seminar programme, providing a wealth
of sector-specific information in the
dedicated hubs. In addition to this,
there will also be a main stage seminar
theatre that will tackle the bigger and
broader construction industry topics and
challenges.
Confirmed hosts on the main stage are
influential broadcast journalists John
Humphrys, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and
Steph McGovern. John Humphrys will
take to the stage on day one as topics
such as governmental policy, the housing
crisis and the economy are discussed.
The internationally recognised journalist,
broadcaster and author started his career
for the BBC in 1966 and has reported
on domestic and foreign issues from
around the globe. John is now a hugely
popular presenter on BBC Radio 4’s
long-standing The Today Programme
broadcast to millions each morning.
Day two of the main stage will be chaired
by Financial Correspondent for the
BBC Steph McGovern. Well known for
winning the title of Young Engineer for
Britain after saving Black & Decker over
£1 million on a design for their Leaf Hog
product, Steph’s sharp business insights
will be invaluable as the programme
takes a closer look at the skills shortage
and key infrastructure projects on the
horizon.
Krishnan Guru-Murthy will lead the final
day of proceedings on the main stage as
topics such as procurement opportunities,
BIM and unifying the industry are
addressed. Krishnan’s career as a
broadcast journalist and specialist news
reporter has spanned five British general
elections and in 2010 he was nominated
for the prestigious accolade of Presenter
of the Year for the Royal Television
Society Journalism Awards.
Further seminars of note will be a
keynote presentation from the Head
of Construction at the Cabinet Office
- Dr David Hancock, who will set out
parliamentary plans and policies for
the construction industry over the next
electoral period, sessions from Glenigan,
the Chartered Institute of Architectural
Technologists (CIAT) and the Federation
of Master Builders (FMB) on protecting
construction from economic weakness
and improving the industry’s image
among investors and policy makers and
dedicated BIM seminars exploring its
future outlook and practical advice.
Visitors will also be able access
additional content such as the Careers
Centre in association with the House
Builders Federation, Meet the Installer
sessions across several shows and the
Surfaces & Materials Hub in partnership
with SCIN Gallery. Further to this,
there will be a dedicated space for civil
050
engineers to discuss the hottest topics in the
form of the Infrastructure Hub and there will
also be a commercial vehicle test drive zone.
Hosted Buyers Scheme
The event will also provide the unique
opportunity for key visitors to take part
in a hosted buyer scheme. Designed to
offer active buyers a structured and highly
effective show experience, the scheme will
allow buyers to efficiently cut through the
‘noise’ by going directly to the suppliers
and vendors that are most able to meet their
needs.
Following an in depth consultation to
establish the buyer’s requirements, the UK
Construction Week team will organise a
bespoke programme of hand-picked supplier
meetings, seminars and networking events,
all designed to help the visitor fulfil both their
immediate and longer term project needs.
This focused approach allows participants to
get maximum return on the time they invest
in attending the show. What’s more, this
service is completely free of charge.
Spahaus and Trihaus:
Democratized Access To Contemporary Architecture In Nature.
On the banks of Lac Supérieur,
just 90 minutes north of
Montreal (Quebec), a mountain
that was once the property of a former
religious congregation now houses
a creative and innovative model for
integrating contemporary architecture in
a natural environment.
Located on the north side of the Mont-
Tremblant ski resort, in the Laurentians
touristic region, the Fraternité-sur-Lac
resort site values human experience
above all else. In 2012, its developers
entrusted Montreal studio YH2 with the
challenge of creating a series of modern
residences that would be integrated to the
natural environment – hence targeting a
new generation of homeowners who are
sensitive to design, architecture and new
standards with regards to interior and
exterior developments. This approach
marks a clear shift away from traditional
log lodges, the mythical Canadian
cabin or plywood-heavy alpine cottages
surrounded by boutiques.
By signing on to a real estate project for
the very first time, the YH2 team first
conceived Spahaus, which focuses on
horizontal housing, a marriage of wood
and concrete, panoramic vistas and an
outdoor spa. A series of Trihaus – a
big brother to Spahaus – then rapidly
followed, with its three-storey vertical
design overlooking a terrace, providing
owners with the feeling of living amidst
the trees. This cluster of secondary
homes aims to preserve the site’s natural
state, including the original trees, a
river and trails leading to Lac Supérieur
and the Club de la Pointe, an open-air
playground laid out on the shores of the
aforementioned lake, where motorized
vessels are forbidden.
Democratizing architecture
Since setting up shop in Montreal’s Little
Italy neighbourhood nearly 20 years
ago, Loukas Yiacouvakis and Marie-
Claude Hamelin have given life to many
distinctive residential and commercial
projects that have attracted attention both
in Canada and around the world. For
Yiacouvakis, his team’s utmost priority
is to democratize access to architecture.
“I believe it is in everyone’s best interest
to democratize the work we carry out,”
he explains. “We aim to deliver carefully
thought-out residences, but even more
importantly, to send out a clear message
that architecture doesn’t merely cater to a
privileged minority.”
Therefore, YH2 is always on the hunt
for the best playing surface in a natural
environment where it can integrate
projects that are inspiring, functional and
affordable. “I believe that a secondary
residence should allow for a deeprooted
connection with nature and the
surrounding landscapes, all the while
offering a living space wherein one feels
entirely comfortable with oneself and
with others,” Yiacouvakis points out.
The ready-to-live in the mountains
YH2 and Fraternité-sur-Lac’s concerted
vision translated into an approach
Yiacouvakis describes as “ready-to-live”,
comparable to the ready-to-wear lines
devised in the 1960s by haute couture
fashion houses.
058
“Until now, our practice has mainly
been dedicated to architectural design
for specific clients – custom-built homes
that can pride themselves on a privileged
rapport with the natural environment they
integrate. With the Spahaus and Trihaus
projects, we are working in collaboration
with Fraternité developers to establish
an assortment of properties in nature that
are flexible and maintenance-free. This
collection of residences was designed
for this particular mountain site, by
rolling out a variety of different models
that serve as a bona fide, alfresco art
collection.”
This approach is not to be confused
with factory-built housing, which may
be attractive to some, but is conceived
without regard to ground unevenness,
natural layout, vistas or the alignment of
developments with human experience.
“To us, factory-built housing has no
place in nature, given that the proposition
wholly ignores the land on which it is
built. The construction of a factory-built
home requires significant deforestation
just to set up the different prefabricated
elements, delivered by way of heavy
machinery, rendering the possibility of
an intimate rapport between architecture
and nature impossible,” Yiacouvakis
explains.
As a further illustration of this point,
Spahaus units blend into the naturally
undulating contours of the mountain,
with each residence positioned to keep
other chalets out of sight, as if they
were laid out on the steps of a staircase.
With a large window design in front,
the ground floor’s concrete structure
welcomes a wooden playhouse (that can
accommodate a green terrace), which
constitutes an additional room on the
second floor. What we’re witnessing here
is the merging of the “tiny house” with
the thinking that goes into a modern,
functional space. Inaugurated in the
spring of 2015, these 21 Spahaus units
have nearly all found takers already,
while the Trihaus generate a similar
brand of enthusiasm.
059
An $80 million investment in nature
Having grown organically since 2005, Fraternité-sur-Lac
constitutes an economic hub in the Laurentians, with a longterm
total investment of $80 million, including: the layout of the
Club de la Pointe (a 100,000 sq. ft. playground bordering on the
lake and reserved exclusively for residents), a village-inspired
centre, a general store including reception and restaurant
facilities as well as a hiking trail in the forest. On the whole,
the project was imagined as a way to optimize and cultivate the
sense of intimacy between residences and residents.
The Club de la Pointe offers, among other things, access to
Lac Supérieur for swimming, tennis courts, a pool, kayaks,
a pétanque area, a yoga space, a gym and outdoor fireplaces.
Come winter, residents take part in cross-country skiing and
snowshoeing, as well as skating and broomball on an ice rink
set up on the lake. Less than 15 minutes away, residents
reach Mont-Tremblant National Park, one of
Canada’s most prestigious ski centres, as
well as many golf courses.
Unlike the typical approach of conceiving and
marketing real estate projects, Fraternité-sur-Lac
wants to steer clear of simplistic dichotomies between
the urban bustle and peaceful rural life, by reaching out
to a community of buyers who see both of these realities
positively and who seek to balance both harmoniously
instead of pitting one against the other.
WIRELESS REMOTE CONTROLLABLE PANEL HEATERS
FROM BEHA NORWAY
BEHA Elektro AS, Norway’s most reputable
electric heating manufacturer is one of the oldest
and most traditional electrical companies in
Norway, still in operation under the same family
ownership since its establishment in 1917. http://
www.beha.no/
BEHA, has introduced its environmentally friendly
‘Ijaz’ wireless controlled panel heater system
to the UK. The ‘Ijaz’ allows users to control any
number of BEHA heaters up to a range of 300
meters enabling full, flexible and complete
command of room temperatures throughout the
home.
Every BEHA panel heater can be made remotely
controllable with the insertion of a special aerial
receiver module which allows the user friendly
touch screen ‘Ijaz’ controller to alter the heat
emitted and turn the unit off and on. The heaters
can be controlled individually or collectively in
up to sixteen separate ‘zones’. They can also be
easily set to heat only when required, ensuring
lower fuel bills and minimal waste of energy.
The result is a modern, flexible, easy to install
and environmentally friendly alternative to
old fashioned wet central heating systems. In
addition the Ijaz controller has the ability to
control other appliances via a wireless aerial
switch for such use as turning lights off and on
for security purposes. Ijaz can also be remotely
operated for use such as switching on heating in
a holiday home before arrival.
BEHA heaters are designed to heat homes and
commercial properties. The large selection of
eleven models comes in two heights and all
heaters are finished in neutral white. The heaters
can be painted to any desired colour and BEHA
have now introduced glass fronted heaters in
white, blue, orange and dark grey. Projecting
from the wall just 83mm when installed, they
take up very little room or wall space. Both the
heaters and the wireless Ijaz system can be
installed by anyone, avoiding costly plumbing or
electrical bills.
An advanced low temperature heating elements
with a larger than usual surface area prevent
dust burn, helping those with asthma and other
allergies whilst reducing the risk of discolouration
to the heater, the surrounding furnishings and
wall coverings.
Smart Fire UK Part Of £1m Redevelopment
In Knightsbridge
When interior designer Dominic Parrish wanted a realistic
fireplace for his redevelopment of a luxury basement
apartment, he turned to Smart Fire UK.
Being a basement apartment with no access to a chimney
or flue, the EcoSmart fires were seen as the perfect
alternative for heating the room.
Because the fires run on bio-ethanol, a clean burning
fuel, they do not require any fume extraction devices,
meaning they can be installed virtually anywhere.
London based interior designer Dominic Parrish has been
in the industry for the past 15 years, and chose the fires
for their style and ease of use.
He said: “I wanted the fire to be the focal point of the room
and the beauty with the EcoSmart fires is that they can
work in almost any location.
100% Design
100% Design, the UK's largest design
trade show celebrates its 21st edition
at brand new home, Olympia London.
Staged in the dramatic Grand and West
Halls, the show will take place across
two levels and benefit from natural light,
grand architectural spaces, and five
distinct sections; from Interiors to Design
& Build through Kitchens & Bathrooms,
Workplace and Emerging Brands.
Based upon the central theme 'Design
in Colour', this year's 100% Design
has collaborated closely with trend
forecasters WGSN among many others,
to bring to life the visual and sensual
experience of using colour across
interiors and the built environment. The
top colour trends for 2016 will thread
throughout the show and act as a means
of navigating the show floors, as well as
demonstrating the day-to-day importance
of colour.
Specially commissioned and thoughtprovoking
editorial features and
installations support this leading design
event. The overall show theme, Design in
Colour resonates strongly in the Interiors
section of 100% Design 2015. Within
this section, the specially commissioned
feature highlights the Spring/Summer
2016 colours identified by trend
forecasters WGSN. By applying the key
colours to a concept space dominated
by a series of columns, the carefully
selected pieces of furniture bring to life
the look and feel of latest and future
interiors. Created by Studio Design UK,
the striking feature provides a simple
concept of colour matching both products
and tones, with partners including Paint
by Conran.
Working with the large open space
at Olympia London, Studio Design
UK has again partnered with leading
contemporary crystal manufacturer Lasvit
(right, Crystal Rock by Arik Levy) and
UK materials company Camira Fabrics to
create a suspended entrance feature that
is set to inspire show visitors. Also look
out for the bespoke installation by Rug
Designer when entering the hall and from
the gallery level above.
In the centre of Workplace, and the
show, Studio Design UK has devised a
stunning Central Bar for 100% Design
2015. Working in tandem with material
sponsors Perspex® Acrylic Brand, the
design team has created a dynamic,
coloured, suspended structure that is an
impressive and aesthetically beautiful
interpretation of this year's creative
campaign.
At the heart of Kitchens & Bathrooms
this year’s feature café, Half-Three Café
is a contemporary take on an English
tradition – a multi-sensory experience
of taste, aroma and colour, celebrating
a broad selection of tea. The cafe is
designed by Daniel Rous of Fabrica, with
tea by Twinings.
Interactive installation, Mattergarden can
also be found within Design & Build - a
stratum inspired structure intended as
a tactile platform for the exploration of
contemporary and future materials, as
well as treatments and applications for
use in design and architecture.
Talks at 100% Design this year examines
the power of colour. Together with the
visual, the programme examines the
other senses too – how through touch,
smell, sound and taste, our lives can
be positively influenced by design to
create stimulating environments that
improve productivity and creativity while
supporting us emotionally. Speakers
include Ilse Crawford, Winny Maas,
Lyndon Neri, Morag Myerscough and
Rogier van der Heide.
Alongside this host of activity over 400
exhibitors including Tafaruci Design,
Vitra, Sé, BuzziSpace, Steelcase, Tom
are trying to achieve, and we have the expertise to enable you
to do it better.
It takes many activities and skills to bring the ideas and designs
of Architects/Engineers to fulfilment. Building Information
Modelling (BIM) attempts to standardise the creation and
exchange of information to make the design, construction and
operational management of a facility or infrastructure asset
more efficient.
It is important to note that BIM is not just about buildings, but
in its wildest context is being applied to facility, building, road,
railway, and infrastructure projects. It is also now very much
impacting organisations throughout the supply chain including
manufacturers, fabricators and interior designers.
The word ‘building’ in itself also doesn’t necessarily
describe the full scope of a project – it doesn’t cover policies,
assumptions, strategic decisions, supply chain, specification,
user assessment, regulation and recycling sustainability. All
are key parts of the projects ‘information model’ and should be
included in the creation of the facility or asset information as
the project progresses.
BIM covers all aspects of the project lifecycle and is being
driven by UK Government, to ensure that all public sector
projects are under-pinned by the creation, collation and
exchange or shared 3D models and intelligent structured
data that is attached to them. UK Government has defined
a minimum requirement for Level 3 BIM by 2016, which
defines a series of domain models and the provision of a single
electronic environment to store shared data and information.
UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level
Making the right choices to begin your BIM journey and
maximise the return on your investment is critical. Man and
understand the impact of BIM and the market opportunity
that it presents throughout the supply chain. The solutions
Amari Plastics Celebrates In Style
With Supplier Partners
T
he year 2015 is Amari Plastics’ 40th Anniversary
and as part of the company’s year-long celebrations,
it hosted a gala party event for its key suppliers at the
beautiful and historic Oakley Court riverside hotel at Windsor
on the 25th and 26th of June 2015.
Over 50 guests from leading manufacturers throughout the
UK, America, Europe and Asia arrived on the first day, to
enjoy a full programme of English-themed entertainment and
refreshments, starting with a sumptuous cream tea and a game
of croquet!
An afternoon beer-tasting event was a huge hit with many
guests and others enjoyed a round of golf on the hotel’s golf
course. Some found time for a swim in the pool or a cycle ride
along the Thames.
In the evening, a delicious three course dinner was followed
by speeches paying respect and thanks to the suppliers for their
support over 40 years. Then entertainment from talented upand-coming
singer Jo Howard took the party into the night.
The following morning, guests enjoyed a trip along the Thames
on two beautiful classic river steamers – one of which was
famously used to transport Her Majesty the Queen on her
Diamond Jubilee River Pageant in 2012.
Jamie Manifold, Amari Plastics’ Supplier Relations Manager,
said: “Our relationships with suppliers are a cornerstone of
our success. In fact, without them, there would be no Amari
Plastics! So it’s always been our priority to engender trust
and friendship and build really strong and durable, longterm
supplier relationships. This party was a way of saying
thank you to them for their continued support. Many of our
guests represent companies with whom we have been in
partnership for decades. As an example, Amari Plastics has
been a distributor of Bayer products since the formation of the
company in 1975.”
The event was one of a series of celebrations planned for 2015.
Forthcoming events are planned to honour and entertain the
company’s other two key stakeholder groups: its customers and
employees.
You can see details of these events and other celebrations, plus
a fascinating insight into the history of the company at Amari
Sole Furniture
Stunning furniture through advanced engineering
Traditional high street furniture design
has long been stifled by the outdated
approach of the trade. From the old
established techniques and production
methods, to low cost imports. All have
limited the end result.
Sole Furniture design and manufacture
high quality, modern and minimalist
residential and hotel furniture. They can
design to your requirements and budget
and can produce in quantities from as
little as ten up to the hundreds or even
thousands if desired.
All products created by Sole are a
result of their balanced approach to
the design process where production
methods, material, cost, and aesthetics
are all considered equal. Through this
disciplined and experienced approach at
concept level Sole Furniture are able to
actually increase the aesthetics, quality
and precision, whilst also reducing
the labour costs. Resulting in products
of higher design and unique aesthetic
without the increased cost.
Sole Furniture has created a winning
formula for furniture design through
advanced engineering methods and
a proven track record within the
industry. They have put in place a strict
manufacture led design development
process that utilises the most up to date
technologies and manufacture methods,
a process that also maximises the value
of the materials being used.
Sole Furniture can give you a turnkey
solution to furniture creation from
concept to prototype, right through
to manufacture. From one off unique
pieces to full ranges. From their designs,
or to your provided brief. All items are
designed from the inside out with all
manufacture and assembly not only
considered, but fully integrated into the
process.
Sole Furniture’s founding Director has taken his experience and knowledge within
the industry and used this to implement a simple yet bold approach to the design
and manufacture process. Dean Watson spent 7 years studying design and cabinet
making, firstly as an apprentice and then as a degree student. Dean later spent 8
years as a designer and project manager for one of the leading suppliers of bespoke
furniture to the residential and commercial sectors. Driven to not only challenge
the industry standard but change it forever, he set up the business Sole Furniture.
With his proven track record: From gold medal in the UK’s National Skill Build
Competition as an apprentice, to a full page feature article ‘Talent Spotting’ in FX
Magazine as a student, to senior designer for one the UK’s market leading bespoke
furniture manufacturers. To winning the A Design Award with Sole Furniture’s
very first product. This is a man that not only loves what he does but excels at it.
SIGNBOX PROVIDES BRANDING
FOR STYLISH REFURBISHMENT
OF PATERNOSTER HOUSE
Signbox has collaborated with interior designer
Resonate Interiors to implement an eye-catching refurbishment
of the commercial reception area at the
Paternoster House office complex in
Paternoster Square, City of London. The
architectural sign specialist was fundamental in
executing a challenging signage project that has
greatly enhanced the property’s conspicuousness in
a historic area within the British capital.
Located adjacent to St Paul’s Cathedral, managing
agent Savills commissioned the job on behalf of Paternoster
House’s owner, Commerzbank. The brief
was to create a more inspiring and visually attractive
reception area which had greater
presence from the street, explains Pernille Stafford,
Resonate Interiors’ Managing Director.
“The brief was two-fold,” says Stafford. “Firstly,
we needed to modernise the interior of the
reception, which was dated and gloomy. It
featured a dark and busy red marble floor that,
when combined with the inappropriate layout, was
detrimental to the visitor experience. Secondly, the entrance
lacked presence in a busy area. We had to devise
a holistic design that both
addressed these issues and simultaneously capitalised
on and blended with the prestigious location and its surroundings.”
The pallet of the design was minimal and stylish, with the use of timber, copper and grey stone.
Paying homage to one of the most famous and recognisable sites in the world, Pernille and her
team incorporated the cathedral into the design, using a printed glass graphic depicting the inside
of the building’s iconic dome. The vivid colours of the glass manifestation juxtapose with the light
cream interior brickwork and neutral grey tile floor. In addition, a new light raft was installed to
lift the area’s natural space. However, in order to meet the brief, it was vital that the interior was
supported by the exterior design.
“We needed a signage solution that was not only attention grabbing in a tasteful way, but that
worked in sympathy with the current architecture,” says Stafford. “For this, we required a
specialist who understood the deft touch required to implement signage that respects a building’s
environment. Having worked with Signbox before, we knew that the company could create an
innovative solution that would add the final flourish to the whole design, marrying the elements
and finishes used by our joiners.”
Signbox developed a prominent LED illuminated portal sign that was to sit comfortably within
the brick arches that led to the reception. This required a great deal of finesse and meticulous
attention to detail as not to impend on the existing architecture of the building, while simultaneously
adhering to colour reference points and copper detailing that was set out by Resonate
Interiors.
“This project was all about getting the details perfect while maximising on a limited budget and
space to optimum effect,” concludes Stafford. “Signbox provided an exemplary service and was
fundamental in helping the detail on this project really sing.”
Mark Bartlett, Managing Director, Signbox. added “This project was all about the details, from
matching the palette tones to ensuring the installation was finished on time. It’s a wonderful
addition to our growing London portfolio.”
Regency Dormer
The project was to extend a small 1st floor flat into the
loft and create a new bedroom with dormer. A simple
brief complicated only by the lack of headroom in the
loft, the client’s design ambition and conservative planning
rules in this conservation area of Edinburgh.
This street has the densest concentration of listed buildings
in Portobello (54 in 120m). The planners were resistant to
the idea of a dormer in this location at all but following long
negotiations a rear dormer was conceded. We then made a
case for a low profile, long dormer, more than twice as long
as is normally permitted, because this had less visual impact
than a dormer located near the eaves.
NEW BRIDGE PROVIDES ESSENTIAL LINK
ALONG CORNWALL’S
CLAY TRAILS
A new 31m x 3.5m Tied Arch bowed steel
truss cycle/bridle bridge linking St Austell to
The Eden Project was recently installed by
CTS Bridges during a night time road
closure over the A391 Carluddon Road,
Cornwall.
The bridge provides an essential link for
the ‘Clay Trails’ which form a network of
walking, cycling and horse riding trails
through mid-Cornwall encompassing the
towering clay tips known collectively as the
Cornish Alps.
Alex Hoffen, Project Manager for Cormac
praised CTS for a successful installation,
saying ‘the bridge will benefit pedestrians,
equestrians, cyclists, young, old and
disabled with the main aim being towards
sustainability, health and wellbeing and the
environment’.
The bridge was designed by CTS as a tied
arch formed from 500mm CHS with steel
hollow section hangers and sub-frame. The
deck was overlaid with rubber tiles in order
to provide a safe and quiet surface for horse
riders. The 1.8m high parapet comprises
steel uprights and top rail with stainless steel
weld mesh and a 625mm solid steel toe
board. The bridge was transported in one
piece from Huddersfield to Cornwall on a 5
axle triple extender step frame vehicle under
police escort for the last part of the journey.
CTS planned and supervised the installation
using a 350t crane.
Landscaping & External Works
Ensuring New-Build Gardens longevity
One of the commonest complaints of new-build house
buyers is the state of the little patch of ground destined to
become the garden.
By working a metre down in the soil using their well-proven
air-power machinery, Terrain Aeration Services can undo
long term damage of months in a few hours, leaving it free
draining and a pleasure to own.
It is fast, effective and even possible in the tightest spaces by
using slim line plant. This can access the smallest rear
gardens through a standard gate even after the fencing has
been installed.
TERRAM GEOCELL
The versatile and lightweight cost effective solution
TERRAM GEOCELL is a 3D cellular confinement solution ideal for
use in construction and civil engineering projects for erosion control,
soil stabilisation on flat ground and slopes, load platforms, tree
root protection, channel protection, and structural reinforcement
for load support and earth retention.
Supplied as flat pack panels, which are expanded on site to form
a honeycomb-like structure, TERRAM GEOCELL’s can be filled
with local compactable infill such as sand, soil, rock or other site
material, reducing transport and installation costs. Flexibility and
strength eliminate the potential for cracking, spalling, splintering
and corrosion commonly seen in alternative concrete, steel and
timber systems.
TERRAM GEOCELL’s are perfect for highway applications and
can be seen on the 6m high embankment between junctions
16 to 23 and 27 to 30 of the M25. Approximately 1,800m 2 of
TERRAM GEOCELL was supplied to contractors Skanska and
Balfour Beatty, working for Highways England, for stabilisation
and erosion control where the motorway was widened, which,
once installed, was filled with a layer of topsoil and hydro-seeded.
As TERRAM GEOCELL is made from permeable material, it
allowed for the free flow of water, promoting a healthy growing
environment for vegetation. This vegetation, coupled with the
strong and flexible structure of the GEOCELL, ensured the
constructed embankment was stable, protected from weather
erosion and blended into the natural environment.
TERRAM GEOCELL’s have also been used in Kent for the
construction of an access road for a new housing development,
which crossed over an area where tree roots were at surface
level. Spread laterally to reduce loads on the underlying soil and
protect the tree roots from damage, GEOCELL’s were installed on
top of a geotextile and filled with type 1 road stone before being
compacted flat. A geotextile and binding layer were then added on
top of the cells and the surface finished with small granular gravel.
Offering the perfect solution for tree root protection, TERRAM
GEOCELL stops compaction from vehicle tyres whilst also allowing
for the passage of airflow and water to provide essential nutrients
to roots and preventing root rot - making them ideal for Sustainable
Drainage Systems (SUDS).
As TERRAM GEOCELL is made from permeable material, it allowed
for the free flow of water, promoting a healthy growing environment
for vegetation. This vegetation, coupled with the strong and flexible
structure of the GEOCELL, ensured the constructed embankment
was stable, protected from weather erosion and blended into the
natural environment.
TERRAM pre-design software
TERRAM has launched a GEOCELL pre-design software
tool to aid users in selecting the correct product for erosion
control and retaining walls. By entering application
information into the user-friendly tool, users will be given
fast and specific information regarding the suitability of
GEOCELL for their project. If applicable, the user will be
given the product code and pin density for the most
suited GEOCELL product.
The new Pardak® 110 system has been installed on the
roof of another Westfield scheme – the Broadway in
Bradford, opening later this year.
Innovations in Rooftop Parking
In 1987, Netherlands based manufacturer Zoontjens launched Pardak®, an innovative decking system for roofs
accommodating intensive passenger car traffic and parking, based on tensioned precast concrete slab technology. Almost
2 million square metres have now been installed around Europe – and development continues with new ranges to meet the
latest demands.
Rooftop parking is an increasingly popular
design choice, making good use of wasted,
high-level areas and freeing up muchneeded
open space on the ground for more
attractive and appealing uses, adding value
to our cities. But the technical challenges are
complex, demanding dedicated expertise and
a holistic, systematic approach. The Pardak®
system can be used on most roof build-ups
including warm, un-insulated and inverted
roofs where it sits directly on the insulation
so eliminating any cold bridging. It uses dry,
prefabricated construction techniques for
fast, safe installation, unaffected by most
weather conditions – which can be speeded
up even more using mechanized techniques
such as vacuum-lifting machines.
The system consists of high quality, vacuumformed
concrete slabs supported on pressure
distributor pads with adjustable tensioning
elements. Each slab is profiled on the sides
with drainage slots and supplied as standard
with a raised diamond pattern. A reinforced
version is also available to accommodate
emergency vehicle access.
Meeting SuDS Requirements
The regular pattern of surface grooves in
the slabs and the pre-formed slots between
installed slabs allow water to move rapidly
off the surface without the need for falls,
into the void below. Here, water runoff can
be attenuated before discharge, as part of a
SUDS strategy to meet the latest planning
requirements for sustainable drainage
introduced earlier this year in England.
The surface remains free of water – and ice
in cold weather – making it safe for both
vehicles and pedestrians. The void below
can also accommodate service cables with
straightforward access when needed. The
paving system protects the waterproofing
membrane from UV, structural and other
damage, while keeping it accessible, as
individual slabs can be removed easily.
In fact, the whole system can be rapidly
dismantled and re-used where needed.
Pressure distributors at the corners of slabs
absorb and distribute vertical and horizontal
forces that occur when a vehicle passes over
the parking surface and also reduce contact
noise of the vehicle tyres. Then, bolts in the
tensioning element are simply adjusted to
close the slabs up, creating an integrated,
homogeneous surface. Here, vertical,
as well as horizontal forces exerted by
vehicles braking, decelerating and turning,
are distributed between several slabs. The
adjustable tensioning elements compensate
for differential movement of the slabs,
because of their self-regulating action. They
also accommodate thermal movement of the
building and the slabs, and movement of the
slabs due to heavy traffic, as well as product
and installation tolerances.
New Product Ranges
Recent examples of this impressive system
include Westfield Stratford City – the largest
urban shopping centre in Europe and the
gateway to London’s Olympic Park – where
around 15,000m2 of the well-established
Pardak® 90 were installed. But the recently
developed Pardak® 110 range, replacing
Pardak® 90, takes these principles further
with improvements to accommodate today’s
increasing trafficking levels and heavier cars
including SUVs.
The main changes are considerably more
effective tensioning elements, plastic corner
pieces enabling accurate slab height levelling
and increased slab sizes to a 1100mm x
1100mm grid. Pardak® 110 also gives
substantially lower sound generation values,
for example from shopping trolleys, due
to a more intensive horizontal and vertical
tensioning of the new system. Its capabilities
will be demonstrated at another Westfield
scheme opening later this year – the
Broadway in Bradford – the fourth largest
shopping centre in the UK and the first to use
Pardak® 110, where some 13,000m2 have
been installed.
Zoontjens is also turning its attention to
renovation and refurbishment projects, and
lightly trafficked roofs such as office blocks
and car dealerships. Here, the smaller and
lighter Pardak® 80 system imposes lower
loads on the roof structure but has been
designed to cater for the increased weights
Formpave’s SUDS Helps To Meet
Guernsey’s High Water Quality Standards
Formpave’s permeable paving and Sustainable Urban
Drainage System (SUDS) has been used on two high
profile projects in Guernsey to help meet the island’s
high pollution control and surface water requirements.
The concept behind SUDS is to help prevent flooding by
replicating natural systems and processes to drain surface
water run-off in a controlled way. This is done through
collection, storage and cleaning before the water is slowly
released back, either into the watercourses or directly
into the ground.
It has been used at Les Beaucamps High School and a development
of 40 homes on the site of the former Guernsey
Grammar school for Boys. Both schemes also incorporated
EcoGranite, which is one of the most sustainable permeable
paving options on the market. It contains up to 77
per cent recycled materials and is an environmentallyfriendly
alternative to the use of freshly quarried granite.
Kew House
Set within the Kew Green Conservation Area of southwest
London, this four bedroom family house is formed
of two pre-fabricated weathering steel volumes inserted
behind a retained nineteenth century stable wall.
First and foremost a family home, the tone is informal but rich
with incidental spaces, unexpected light, and complex vertical
volumes. Approaching the design as a kind of built diagram of
the way the family wanted to live, Piercy&Company created
an internal landscape of alternative routes, levels, and spaces –
many of which are aimed more at children than adults.
The simple plan makes the most of the constrained site, reduces
the building’s mass in the streetscape, and responds to the
living patterns of the family. Two rectangular wings each
have living spaces on the ground floor and bedrooms above.
Connecting the wings is a glass encased circulation link,
allowing light to fill the house and courtyard.
102
The two shells housing each wing are formed of 4mm thick
weathering steel – a hardworking combination of structure
and façade. The weathering steel is maintenance free,
essential for the enclosed site, and softened by a patchwork of
expressed welds and perforated panels. The deep orange tones
and perforations within the skin echo the dappled light and
autumnal palette of nearby Kew Gardens. Inside, oak veneer
panelling and Dinesen flooring are the basis of a warm and
natural material palette.
Kew House was an experimental build, driven by the architect’s
and clients’ shared interest in a ‘kit-of-parts’ approach,
prefabrication, and the self-build possibilities emerging
from digital fabrication. CNC milling and an on-site joinery
workshop were used to create a bespoke fit-out that could
be installed by the client and a small team of architecture
graduates.
Where moody comes into its own
is the versatility of scenes and
effects that can be programmed.
Available in many variants, moody
can handle up to 10 zones of
colour or 16 white-light fixtures.
Simply hold down the button for
3 seconds to enter programming
mode, then step through each
zone or fixture to set the colour
or intensity. If dynamic effects
are desired, such that the colour
gradually cycles through a
spectrum, then no problem – there
is a moody variant for that too.
Mood control made simple
With eco-friendly credentials,
pleasant white tones and mindblowing
colours, it’s no wonder
that LED lighting is taking off in
a big way. And, as the price of
LED strip lighting has come down,
colour coving effects – often seen
in hotels, restaurants and other
public spaces – are becoming
increasingly popular in the home.
Unfortunately, the affordability
of the control units needed
is just like a conventional dimmer
switch: rotate to control intensity or
moody features both DMX512
and DALI outputs, enabling it
to be used with a wide range
of dimmers. Alternatively, for
customers needing a standalone
solution that can be used directly
with LED fixtures, moody cv offers
a built-in constant voltage dimmer.
Starting at just £99 (ex. VAT),
the moody range offers fantastic
Art For Art’s Sake?
It started with stainless steel light switches and before
you could say “form and function”, premium electrical
accessories were featuring in schemes like the international
Red Dot design awards. Were they any better than their
predecessors, or was it just art for art’s sake? Probably the
latter, but they looked good on the wall.
Meanwhile in the mass market, the pressure on prices was
leading us down the path of bulk offshore manufacturing, with
fractions of pennies shaved of the unit price by minimising
tooling and materials costs. So, even when the industry
was really bringing exciting technical and energy saving
innovations like low-cost LED lighting to you, not just
cosmetic improvements, the irony was that they often look
exactly the same as their predecessors because re-tooling was
too expensive in a price-led market. All too often, that fractionof-a-penny
pinching extends to componentry and, at the end of
the day product quality and reliability.
At Timeguard we have always traded on superior branded
quality and a few years ago we decided to buck the trend and to
reinforce our investment in superior componentry with superior
designs: better performance AND better looks. In all honesty,
we (and probably most other manufacturers) were accelerated
along that road by the latest generation of designers to our
R&D teams – this new generation has been reared on the likes
of Apple, Ikea and Zara Home, and take good product design in
every aspect of life for granted.
The evolutionary design of our electronic Programastat wall
thermostats and heating controllers marked a watershed in
our approach, but the real revolution was our approach to
outdoor LED lighting. We simply could not see the point of
the industry presenting what was revolutionary technology that
looked like the dinosaurs it was replacing. So we gave our
London-based designer free rein to tear up the rule book – but
with one key proviso. We did not want design for design’s
sake: each design feature had to have a function.
Conversely, each new function we were adding provided a
design opportunity: so essential cooling fins (missing from
cheaper products!), became rows of pins making up featured
metallic backs of new design LED lights. The need to diffuse
LED beams for courtesy lighting and expand the beam for
effective security became diode arrays and reflector plates.
Thus we achieved the magic trick of keeping both the engineers
and the product designers happy at the same time – no mean
feat, I can assure you. More importantly, this approach helps
us – and you – to visually communicate the benefits and value
of the energy saving technology you are offering to your
customers.
You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear – you’ll get
caught out soon enough. So, it stands to reason, design with
assured, branded quality are the true artform for today’s market.
Finkernagel Ross Architects, a young Shoreditchbased
practice, has designed a light- weight
glass pavilion attached to a Grade II listed
house in Hampstead.
Felix Finkernagel comments: “Our design involves
detailed historic and contextual research we
undertake, and demonstrates the practice's innovative
methodology, exploring and testing our concept, and
then implementing these ideas throughout the delivery
process.”
The ‘parent’ structure is Grade II listed, built in the
late 19th Century by the renowned Victorian architect
Horace Field and considered by Nicolas Pevsner as an
example of Field's "early experimental work" and "...in
the Tudor manor house fashion."
109
“Our design was driven by the desire to treat the parent
building and historic fabric with respect, without
subjugating the new pavilion to its aesthetic. The
prominence and integrity of the principal bay is being
restored by cutting back the later additions which
compromised the original massing of the house.
Finkernagel Ross Architects tend to develop designs using a
range of media, as part of the process of considering the brief,
as well as the spatial and technical issues, aesthetics. These
processes are almost always based on scaled representations
to assist architectural ‘thinking’, usually completed by the
time tender documents are sent to the builders who will then
interpret the production information and realise the designs.
There is always a dichotomy between designer and builder,
between representation of a design and its physical embodiment
in the resulting built form.
The new pavilion creates a counterpoint to the original
fabric in terms of materials and detailing and is attached to
the house by frameless glass to articulate their relationship.
The detailing of the extension is designed, again contrary to
the gravitas of its context, to dematerialise it with a floating
brise-soleil seemingly carved from a solid block of marble.
Internally a new space is carved out of the existing fabric
not by demolition of existing walls but by creating an
introverted, fully timber-panelled enclosure that regularises
the current awkward proportions. This transitional space
between the existing rooms of the house and the new
kitchen pavilion takes its inspiration from Sir John Soane’s
breakfast room.”
— Catherine Finkernagel
Catherine Finkernagel adds: “With this project, we are
departing from the traditional processes of design, procurement
and construction, breaching the customary boundaries between
them. The design process, whilst in many ways no different
from any other project, has involved a full scale, 1:1 mockup
section of the most critical part of the construction of the
extension.”
The project demonstrates the practice’s appreciation of cultural
heritage and tradition, and the considered approach taken
when introducing contemporary additions. The new pavilion
at Wedderburn Road is conceived as a ‘contrapuntal’ gesture
– the design celebrates the parent building and yet provides
a confident, unapologetically new, addition to the overall
ensemble.
SSQ’s Riverstone Slate Re-used In Rebuild
By re-using 12-year-old SSQ Riverstone slates from the
original build, a bungalow in Falmouth, Cornwall has
undergone a complete rebuild whilst preserving the
original look of the roof.
The new owners of the property decided they wanted to
replace the loft space with an additional floor, accommodating
three bedrooms. Upon discovering how old the
walls of the building were however they decided to rebuild
the structure from the ground up, preserving 12-year-old
Riverstone slates from the existing roof in order to
complete the new build.
Offering a 100 year guarantee on its Riverstone slate, SSQ
is confident that its slate will really stand the test of time,
preserving the natural appearance associated with slate.
With only a handful of sources known worldwide, SSQ’s
Riverstone slate is one of very few top quality phylitte slates
available. Its unique satin-like lustre makes it a frequent
choice for prestigious projects all over the world.
Raising Standards
®
Solstice Point / Nick Baker Architects
Nick Baker Architects have recently completed
a mixed use scheme at 86-88 Delancey Street
containing 14 flats, 5x3bed, 4x2bed and 5x1 bed
along with 500sqm of office accommodation.
The site at 86-88 Delancey Street lies immediately adjacent
to the town centre of Camden, next to the Parkway
Neighbourhood zone and within the Camden Town
Conservation Area. The properties from 84 Delancey Street
onwards are Grade II listed terraces. Significant consultation
with local residents groups and English Heritage was required
to secure planning consent.
As one of a limited number of historical crossing points over
the main London to Birmingham railway line, the site is a
‘gateway’ location between Regents Park and the vibrant core
of Camden Town.
The scheme comprises a 5 storey block facing Delancey Street
and Parkway with 2 storey maisonettes and offices creating a
rear courtyard. The urban realm to Parkway is greatly improved
as the building sets back 5m from its existing pavement edge.
114
The Network Rail tunnel beneath the site presents a number
of significant challenges to the construction of the overall
building. The 7m curved cantilever is supported by a concrete
frame which in turn is separated from the foundations by
acoustic 'springs'.
The urban characteristics of the south facing site have provoked
a sustainable design response to the building by the introduction
of an “environmental skin” with 92sqm of solar thermal panels
on the south/south west curved façade designed to provide
70% of the building’s hot water requirements and 20% of
the residential central heating. Green and brown roofs ensure
water retention in this inner city area. The scheme will achieve
BREEAM very good and Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3.
By responding creatively and innovatively to what initially
appeared to be urban constraints the design team has created
a new dynamic and sustainable architectural feature in this
challenging corner of Camden Town.
Stone & Stonework
Norstone, the market leader in natural stone cladding, are
delighted to announce a revolution in external stone cladding.
After extensive research and development, HardieWall, a revolutionary new external cement
board, has passed twelve months of rigorous tests at BRE Testing Laboratories with flying colours.
We at Norstone are very excited by this superb new product and are thrilled to see our close
relationship with James Hardie take another giant leap forward.
Previously, brick or block work was necessary outdoors to accommodate our natural stone
veneers but now HardieWall allows external stone cladding installations to be considerably
cheaper, quicker and far more versatile. It can even be affixed to lightweight wooden frames or
on to existing structures. At a solid 19mm, our stone cladding can have as little as a 65mm
finished profile with HardieWall, adhesive and our rock panels.
Easily fixed with nails (manually or standard nail gun) or screws, and tongue and grooved for
extra rigidity and neatness, HardieWall exterior cement board will revolutionise external
cladding.
It goes without saying that, in partnership with Laticrete Adhesives and James Hardie, our
famous and unique Norstone Rock Panel System 10 year dual guarantee applies.
This cutting edge exterior cement board is exclusive to Norstone UK. Please contact us for more
details if you have a project underway or in planning.
James Latham Supplies Western Red Cedar for
Luxury Holiday Homes in Cornwall
The UK's biggest independent timber and panel
product distributor, James Latham, has supplied
880m2 of Western Red Cedar for the construction
of four luxury holiday homes in Talland, South
East Cornwall. www.thebaytalland.com.
The Western Red Cedar was machined to a special
tongue and groove cladding profile and
was used for the exterior cladding of the
impressive properties. It was specified for
its durability and low maintenance qualities
as well as its ability to retain an attractive
appearance when weathered.
Award winning London architectural
practice, Mador Architects were
commissioned to design these luxury
properties which have been sold to
individuals for second homes and
investment opportunities. Each boast
bespoke interiors which include
Porcelanosa bathrooms, rooftop hot tubs,
and high end kitchens.
The team, including Nick Wilson, a
partner at Bay Talland Associates, wanted to
create prestige holiday homes that have a natural
appearance and likeness to a modern alpine lodge.
To achieve this look they designed the building to
incorporate wooden cladding in its construction,
surrounded with large terraces to take advantage
of the views over the bay.
It was important that the Timber length was over
3.3m as they wanted to avoid butt joints which
would spoil the façade’s natural look and feel.
This was a hurdle that James Latham was able to
advise on as Western Red Cedar produces long
lightweight lengths of timber with a fine straight
grain making this specie easy to cut, saw, machine
and fix.
It was also essential that the wood used for the
cladding was durable and would require little
maintenance, while providing a quality and
natural looking finish. Nick and the team at James
Latham discussed a variety of wood products that
could be used and that would cope with the South
East of England’s varied an unpredictable climate.
With natural resistance to moisture, decay and
insect damage (fibres in the timber contain natural
preservatives that are toxic to decay-causing
fungi) Western Red Cedar is one of the world’s
most durable species and remains the premier
choice for timber cladding.
James Latham recommended Western Red Cedar
as the perfect solution to clad the exterior of all
four properties, helping to create the luxury
modern take on the alpine lodge that was specified
within the brief.
Nick Wilson said: “We wanted to create a group
of four luxury lodges that would stand the test of
time and enhance the already beautiful landscape.
The lodges were all sold immediately as they each
offered their own bespoke slice of serenity and
seclusion whilst overlooking the beautiful Cornish
coastline.
“We needed to find a company that was large
enough to not only provide the long lengths of
Western Red Cedar that were required,
directly from stock, but one that was also
able to take care of the machining and
adhere to quick turnarounds, as well as
offering technical expertise and an in-depth
understanding of the products they were
supplying. James Latham more than fitted
the bill and we will have no hesitation in
contacting them again for future projects.”
Mark Harraway, Timber Manager at James
Latham’s Yate depot said: “The Bay
Talland project is a fantastic example of
how Cedar cladding can add the finishing
touches to a building and create the natural
looking exterior and eye-catching asthetics
demanded by a brief such as this.
He added, “PEFC certified, Western Red Cedar is
one of North America's great renewable resources.
It is slow grown and naturally durable and it has
one of the longest life spans of any softwood, plus
its low density gives an excellent insulation value
that is superior to most species.”
“It also offers outstanding dimensional stability, is
lightweight and easy to work with and is simple to
finish and stain which all go to make it the perfect
material for exterior cladding applications.”
Social Housing in Aigues-Mortes
Thomas Landemaine Architectes
Photographs: MC Lucat
The project of collective
housing in Aigues-Mortes
has been developed within an
exceptional site, living witness of the
70s. The building is located in a factory
estate whose architecture is marked
by a modern style. The plot occupies
a key spot; the work has to manage
the transition from a scale to another,
between 3-storey housings and individual
houses the latter being scattered at the
rear of the plot, on the property line.
In order to compose with existing pieces,
the TLA team has chosen to integrate
and reinterpret some of the on-site
architectural elements to the building
aesthetic.
As a result, the treatment of edging
strips has been carefully thought and
comes marking the floors to give a local
dimension to the project. Although it is
integrated in its context, it was important
to give it a punch image, an identity.
Consequently, architects chose to use
wooden materials to unify the project.
First, this material covers well and
second it creates small subspaces, more
secret universes. Being like little huts,
the loggias create intimate outdoor
spaces where it is pleasant to live.
The wood emphasizes a feeling of
warmth and of interiority but mostly
permits one to manage opacities and
transparences, and acts as a filter. Thus,
“looking without being seen” becomes
possible!
Finally, marking the corners appeared as
a way to reinforce the project geometry
and to delimit distinctly two entities.
The upper part, with fifteen apartments
in double exposure, is covered of wood
and punctuated of small appropriable
volumes. The composition is sitting
on a mineral base. Here, the addition
of gabion baskets comes to strengthen
the dichotomy feeling between the two
elements. On the ground floor two public
spaces nestle: a tax center and a police
station.
The main difficulty on this project were
to conciliate cost, comfort, aesthetic,
social and environmental issues. But this
skin has not yet said its last word! Then,
it takes a functional role and becomes
a sunscreen. Playing with rhythms and
exposures, it protects and receives light!
Faithful to itself, this skin shapes and
modulates the facade.
Hargood Close /
Proctor and Matthews
Hargood Close is a supported
housing development in
Colchester. A contemporary
interpretation of traditional almshouses,
the scheme has transformed provision
for homeless people in and around
Colchester.
The Brief
Hargood Close replaces an emergency
hostel on the site where accommodation
was arranged haphazardly across a series
of dated buildings and prefabricated
units that were difficult to maintain.
Facilities were poor, and the site was an
increasingly unpleasant environment.
The design team and clients (Family
Mosaic in partnership with Colchester
Borough Council) therefore seized the
opportunity to provide high quality
modern accommodation and services,
carefully designed around the needs of
residents and staff in a domestic, rather
than institutional environment.
A key objective was to offer a more
appropriate alternative to emergency
bed and breakfast accommodation
for individuals and families, and a
supportive environment that would give
residents dignity, hope and a place where
they could begin to put their lives back
on track.
Flexibility was central to the brief.
Because of its nature, many residents
arrive at very short notice and stay for
a relatively short period of time while
more permanent accommodation can
be arranged for them. A flexible mix
of different sized housing units was
therefore needed to enable staff to
respond appropriately to the regular
churn and changing needs of tenants.
A range communal areas and space for
onsite and visiting staff was also needed.
Proctor and Matthews were selected
to develop proposals for the site
following a design competition. Initial
design workshops were held with
representatives from the existing hostel
management and experienced staff
members from comparable facilities.
The design proposals were further
developed and presented to existing
residents. The scheme was well received
and suggestions from residents and
staff regarding buggy and cycle storage,
drying areas, level access showers and
landscaping were incorporated into the
design.
128
Design approach and
implementation
Proctor and Matthews took traditional
Essex almshouses as the starting
point for their design in order to give
the development a suitably domestic
feel. Historically, alsmhouses are a
successful housing model, providing
vulnerable people with high quality
accommodation in a supportive
domestic environment. Proctor and
Matthews’ architectural language
rejects historical pastiche, instead
offering a contemporary and original
interpretation of that vernacular
model to meet the needs of residents
and staff. Almhouses are also
associated with craftsmanship, and
Proctor and Matthews saw the brief
as an opportunity to demonstrate that
social housing for vulnerable people
at the bottom of the housing ladder
can nevertheless be beautiful, wellcrafted
and dignified.
Like its historical antecedents,
Hargood Close is arranged as a
series of cloisters and courtyards.
This comfortable and domesticallyscaled
arrangement provides a safe
and friendly environment. Allowing
residents and staff to look out for each
other not only provides useful passive
surveillance, but also encourages
a sense of community despite the
transient resident population.
Staff offices are located at the site
entrance and help form the gateway
to the development with views down
London Road as well as back into the
site. Communal accommodation is
located at the centre of the site with
the children’s play area set adjacent
and behind in a controlled space.
Generously sized storage units – a
key requirement for residents who
value having plenty of secure space
for their possessions after being
displaced – are located at ground
floor level. These form part of the
rhythm and support for the cloisters
and first floor decks that provide
access and shelter to both the ground
and first floor entrances.
Hargood Close achieves Code for
Sustainable Homes Level 4 and
includes photovoltaic panels on some
roof areas.
Hargood Close sits comfortably
alongside its Victorian terraced
neighbours. The contemporary
brickwork provides a lively
yet sympathetic presence on
London Road – a busy street and
one of the main routes through
Colchester. Thanks to its design and
craftsmanship, Hargood Close stands
out as a fine contemporary addition
to the street scene, and breaks up
the monotony of its otherwise
ordinary surroundings. It is certainly
a significant improvement on the
shabby buildings and scrubland that
previously occupied the site. This
is Hargood Close’s most important
message: homeless people deserve
and can benefit from an environment
providing quality, dignity and respect.
Timescale
Proctor and Matthews were
commissioned in 2009 and planning
consent was granted in December
2010. Hargood Close was built in a
single phase: construction work began
in May 2011 and the scheme was
completed in April 2013.
Budget
The total cost of the project was
£3.4 million and was funded by
a partnership of Family Mosaic,
Colchester Borough Council and the
Homes and Communities Agency.
Thanks to a clear and robust design
strategy, the project was able to be
delivered within the constraints of a
relatively tight budget.
