shared purpose of ensuring that the perpetrators of<br />

genocide are brought before justice.<br />

Below is a concrete testimony of a member of Ibuka<br />

and a survivor of genocide on how her rights are exercised:<br />

of Rwoga Sector. Meanwhile she had claimed for<br />

the refund of the property destructed, which would<br />

be examined during the appeal session.<br />

With regard to security of the survivors of genocide,<br />

she affirmed that there are no security threats<br />

on her part and yet she has been appearing before<br />

Gacaca court as a party to the case.<br />

“A woman survivor aged 45 formerly resided in<br />

Karambi sector, Masango commune; former Gitarama<br />

Prefecture, Southern Province, submitted a<br />

case before Gacaca court in Karambi, Ruhango district<br />

accusing a former Agronomist of the Commune<br />

to have murdered her husband. Upon the court proceedings,<br />

the accused has been sentenced to 14<br />

years of imprisonment but had already served 12<br />

years in prison. He was eventually released and will<br />

serve the remaining 2 years in TIG (3).<br />

However, the plaintiff was not satisfied by the<br />

outcome of the judgement rendered and she later<br />

filed an appeal before the Gacaca Court of Appeal<br />

In addition to this, AVEGA-Agahozo (Association de<br />

Veuves de Génocide), another civil society organisation<br />

working on the rights of survivors of genocide,<br />

women in particular, recently organised a training<br />

on trauma healing. She concluded that the skills<br />

acquired from the training will benefit the victims<br />

having such problems.(4) . ”<br />

As a NGO working in the justice sector, RCN Justice &<br />

<strong>Démocratie</strong> currently supports the itinerant trials of the<br />

suspects of genocide crimes: these contribute to an improved<br />

proximity of justice in terms of space and consciousness<br />

for the victims and the witnesses who there-<br />
