Southern Sudan
The geopolitical situation
The Southern Sudan, under an autonomy process, is a
region of the Republic of Sudan. Juba is the capital,
the population is estimate around 11 million and the
country have 589.745 km2. The president of Southern
Sudan is Salva Kiir Mayardit .
Sudan holds the dubious record of having staged the
continent’s longest-running civil war. Only six years
after Sudanese independence in 1956, the country
spiralled into its first internal war. Since then, it has
been the scene of intermittent conflict. Chronic instability
including the long-standing civil war between
the north and the south, has killed and displaced hundreds
of thousands of people.
The most recent peace process between the North and
the South came to a conclusion in January 2005 with
the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement
(CPA) by the government and the Sudan People’s Liberation
Army (SPLA) and the SPLA’s political arm, the
Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM). Under
the Power Sharing Agreement that forms part of the
CPA, the parties agreed to divide representation
across all sectors of government (including the executive,
the legislature, and the judiciary).
During the interim period, the structure of governments
in Sudan will be with the National level of Government
which exercises authority to protect and promote
national sovereignty of Sudan, the Southern
Sudanese level of government which exercises author-
ity in respect of the people and states in the South,
the states throughout Sudan which exercise authority
at state level and the local government throughout
the Sudan.
Southern Sudan consists of ten states : Lakes, Warrap,
Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Western Bahr el
Ghazal, Unity, Jonglei, Upper Nile, Eastern Equatoria,
Western Equatoria and Bahr el Jebel. The linkage
between the National government and the
states in Southern Sudan goes through the Government
of Southern Sudan.
Actually, the government of Southern Sudan faces
to big challenges to build a rule of law means,
among others, to build the legislation and the judiciary
system. Southern Sudan is on the threshold...
In three years, the interim period will be ended. A
referendum will take place and the population will
have to choose the future statute of Southern Sudan,
which could lead to independence.
