They don’t want another hype-fuelled event telling them what big data is – they want to become leaders in generating business value from data. storageage ‘The flexible architecture at the heart of scale-out storage becomes even more vital when you consider that storage set-ups now also have to support back-end work – such as backup and deduplication – while still allowing for round-the-clock access to demanding front-end applications,’ says Tarkan Maner, chairman and CEO of Nexenta. ‘This adaptability not only ensures performance remains high, but also provides the optimum conditions for companies to extract real actionable business intelligence from their data.’ But for many organisations running on legacy storage, the thought of scale-out features can be daunting. They want to enjoy the benefits of scale-out storage without completely overhauling their infrastructure. While legacy storage may well be on its last legs, the traditional scale-up model still has a considerable role to play. The capacity of a single block is far greater than it used to be and, as such, businesses can find solutions that will provide ample performance and storage. Furthermore, if companies make an initial investment in a powerful CPU, they are able to add further storage nodes that will then operate within the same infrastructure pool – providing the same incremental performance to capacity increase as found with scale-out solutions. However, Maner adds, this often comes at ‘considerable expense to the enterprise and means that their infrastructure is not adequately architected for the brave new dataeverywhere world ahead’. Many are also looking to enable greater levels of mobile working while maintaining the level of IT security that is required to protect their data. Legacy systems have been a solid IT foundation for many businesses, but as they embark on more mobile ways of working, they are increasingly being lured away from on-premise towards a scale-out approach aided by the cloud. This is proving to be an ideal mobility enabler, but companies need to ensure that the cloud is used in a controlled and secure way. According to Adam Diggins, solutions and pre-sales technology marketing manager at Toshiba, security needn’t be a stumbling block, even for companies that don’t have a day-to-day IT team, as it can be achieved through a combination of reassessing IT policy, implementing mobile device management tools and educating staff. ‘Companies can also take a bite-sized approach to how they embrace this technology – it doesn’t have to be a case of all or nothing when it comes to scale-out features,’ says Diggins. ‘The cloud can act as a gradual stepping stone away from their legacy systems, creating a more manageable process that allows them to avoid overhauling their entire infrastructure at once, which can seem overwhelming.’ But while cloud storage is fastbecoming a popular alternative to traditional infrastructures, there are ways to achieve scalability effectively with an on-premise storage solution.
