Toshiba Satellite
Radius 12
>> THE STORY
It’s difficult to compete with
megabrand Apple in any product
range, and the laptop market is no
different. But Toshiba has pulled
out a formidable competitor to
Apple’s 12-inch Retina MacBook
in the form of the head-turning
Satellite Radius 12, the world’s first
12.5-inch convertible laptop with an
Ultra HD 4K screen. The ultra-quality
display means workers can use the
device in the office and on the move,
then flip the screen to a suitable
angle for cinema-quality viewing.
>> THE FEATURES
At just 15.4 mm thin and weighing
1.32kg, the laptop is easy to carry on
the go and can run for up to eight
hours. The 360-degree hinge enables
five different modes – laptop, tablet,
tabletop, presentation and audience
– while the precision touchpad
supports new Windows 10 gestures.
Lenovo Yoga
Tab 3 Pro
>> THE STORY
Lenovo made a big song and dance
last year when it called in movie star
Ashton Kutcher to promote its Yoga
Tablet 2 Pro, which boasted an in-built
Pico projector that could create a
50-inch image on a wall. One year on
and Kutcher is nowhere to be seen but
the company has revealed an upgrade
to its high-end tablet, the Yoga Tab 3
Pro, which is slightly smaller than its
predecessor but can now project a
70-inch image. The projector is also
now 180-degree rotatable and can
project significantly brighter and
more cinematic pictures.
>> THE FEATURES
As well as its video projection
capabilities, the Yoga Tab 3 Pro
also features four front-facing JBL
speakers to reproduce high-octane
sound, and a virtualised Dolby Atmos
experience that creates a sensation
of sound moving in all three
dimensions around the listener.
At 299 pixels per inch, the on-board
10.1” QHD (2560x1600) screen is
sharper than its predecessor, and
renders richer colours with its Smart
Display technology.
Sony Xperia
Z5 Premium
>> THE STORY
Sony’s mobile division has faced a
difficult time of late, showing an
operating loss of $188 million in the
first quarter of 2015 and revenue
down 16.3% over the previous year.
Having attributed the decline to a
decision by CEO Kazuo Hirai not to
expand its smartphone business,
resulting in a significant decrease in
unit sales, it has now placed its bets
on the launch of a trio of flagship
devices: the Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5
Premium. Owing to its possession of
the world’s first 4K phone display, it
is the Z5 Premium that has attracted
the most attention.
>> THE FEATURES
The Z5 Premium features a sharp and
vivid 5.5-inch 4K Triluminos display
for mobile and IPS, which depicts
images at four times the resolution of
full HD. The device will upscale any
native or third-party content to 4K
and allows users to capture pictures
in 8MP quality. Its other key selling
point is its high-capacity 3430 mAh
battery, which can last up to two days.
