Message 

Dear PBP Community- Members and all Residents, 

We have lots of important updates for you so please 

keep reading. We had a busy September board 

meeting and it was great to see some new faces from 

the community come to our regular board meeting. As 

my two year term as president draws to a close next 

month, I wanted to share with everyone my thoughts 

on what it means to be an active member on PBP’s 

board. Being on the board is a wonderful opportunity 

to improve the community in which you live and make 

a difference in the lives of others. There are no limits or 

constraints on how great we can make our community 

association and every effort, no matter how small, 

makes our neighbourhood richer and a better place 

to live. We do not have any cliques and are wide open 

to new ideas and initiatives. We have very welcoming 

facilities, are in a strong financial position, and have 

paid folks to do the day to day administrative stuff.

On the events end of things, we have decided to 

combine 2015 Summerfest with our annual PBP 

Halloween party, which will be celebrated on a 

Saturday this year (October 24) for the first time. We 

hope that this new day of the week works for folks and 

we encourage community residents and members 

of all ages (not just young kids!) to come out to say 

hello and learn about PBP’s many initiatives. Leandra, 

our Program Manager will be on hand to answer 

questions about fall and winter programming for 

seniors, kids, and adults. Second, we ask that you 

renew your membership as our membership year 

began September 1. Please show your support for 

all of the hard work that our board and many other 

volunteers have been doing and continue to do 

towards improving community facilities (rink and hall), 

programs, events and civic representation. You can 

easily renew your membership on line or by mailing in 

the form in this newsletter. 

As always, I encourage you to contact me directly 

regarding nomination for a board position, helping 

out as a volunteer in a non-board function, and/or 

to get engaged on the LOC issue. Also, we are only a 

month away from the start of the outdoor ice season 

and a new rink director will also be needed. You can 

learn more about all volunteer opportunities, board 

positions, and LOC issues in this newsletter, so please 

keep reading! 

As I mentioned in my last President’s Message, more 

representation is needed at the board meetings this 

fall to tackle the pressing issues of (i) negotiation of our 

Licence of Occupancy (LOC) with the Calgary Board 

of Education (CBE) and the city and (ii) drumming up 

new board members and volunteers for our November 

AGM. I look forward to seeing folks at our October 

13th board meeting from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Attending a 

meeting is a great way to meet others, get the pulse of 

the community, city and province, become involved in 

volunteer initiatives, as well as try out the idea of being 

a full board member.

able to offer seniors in our community three free senior 

programs starting in the fall (however, a membership to 

the PBP is requested for only $10 per year and memberships 

are open to everyone).

Volunteers 

Needed! 

Rink Director and Flooding Volunteers Needed! 

It’s hard to believe that we are only one month away 

from the start of outdoor rink season! We usually have 

our first cold spell in November and we would like to 

have the rink equipment serviced and a team of “rink 

rats” (flooding volunteers) ready to go. Craig Hopkins 

has done a fantastic job for several years now in 

keeping the rink in tip top shape. However it’s time to 

“pass the baton” so PBP is looking for another volunteer 

to assume the role of rink director (does not require a 

board position/commitment). Craig is very happy to 

train and transition this person so experience is not 

required! Please contact Craig directly at craighopkins@

This position involves organizing the rink rats to flood 

on a regular basis and direct any maintenance and/or 

improvements to the rink. We have a generous budget 

to fund equipment needs and rink upgrades. This is a 

great way to give back to the community and kids and 

adults really appreciate having a local rink during the 

long cold winter. New folks on the team are always 

appreciated (and needed!) so please consider joining 

the team as well. Please keep your eyes open for a 

meeting early in November (maybe at the pub?) to get 

organized. 

Update on Hall Rentals! 

In September we said “goodbye” to Lola who did a great job handling PBP’s hall bookings and rentals for 

the last two years. Thanks Lola for all your hard work and commitment to PBP! Leandra, our Administrator 

and Program Manager will be taking over hall rentals so please contact her directly if you are interested 

in booking the hall, board room, or newly renovated room for a private or community event or ongoing 

program. You or your organization may also apply for discounted or free use of the facility if it meets

Wow! I can hardly believe that summer is all but over! Long 

days outside enjoying the sunshine and enjoying your 

garden are now being replaced by wearing sweaters on 

your evening walk and preparing your garden for winter. 

We all know what it takes to winterize the garden – cut 

down the perennials, water in bushes and trees, maybe 

wrap our more sensitive plants with burlap for protection 

against the long, cold winter. But what about winterizing 

our homes? 

Winter is a harsh season to live through, especially if your 

mobility is not as agile as it once was, or if you are noticing 

your sight is not as sharp as it once was. The autumn 

is the perfect time to prepare your home, and yourself, for 

the winter season – and here are a few tips to help you do 

just that! 

The main focus of all preparations is fall prevention. A fall 

can result in even the most healthy and fit person spending 

time in the hospital and then needing to move into assisted 

living. As we age, it is increasingly difficult to make a 

full recovery from a fall. 

Clear off your decks and walkways so that you have a path 

clear of all obstructions between your car and home. Be 

sure that this pathway is relatively flat and void of tripping 

hazards. If the sidewalk blocks have moved and one edge 

is sticking up, call a professional to repair it so you are not 

at risk of tripping on it. Make sure your stairs and walkways 

inside are also free of objects blocking your way. 

Ensure your pathways, inside and out, are adequately lit. 

Aging eyes require 50% more light to see the same as they 

did when you were young!! You do not necessarily need to 

install new fixtures, maybe just clean the glass cover and 

install a higher wattage bulb. And use this opportunity to 

see your kids or grandkids by asking them to stop in and 

help you do this! 

These are just a few things to help you get ready for winter, 

although these tips should be followed year-round!

Canadians who own U.S. assets or spend a 

substantial amount of time south of the 

Canadian border may be exposed to U.S. estate 

taxation. Without the proper protective measures in place 

a Canadian may lose up to 40% of their estate’s total value 

to U.S. estate taxes upon death. Uncle Sam may have a few 

unpleasant surprises for the unprepared. Spending too 

much time in the U.S., owning a U.S. vacation property or 

U.S. investments, even within a RRSP/RRIF, may 

result in an excessive U.S. tax liability. Fortunately, 

utilizing specific estate planning mechanisms may 

minimize U.S. estate tax. Contrary to the United States, 

Canada does not have a formal estate tax. However, when 

Canadian residents pass away, they are deemed to have 

disposed of all of their worldwide assets at fair market 

value. Consequently, a Canadian resident who owns U.S. 

real estate or investments may have a large “deemed” 

capital gain in addition to a U.S. estate tax liability. The 

combination of Canadian tax and U.S. estate tax could 

significantly reduce an inheritance’s value. Ultimately, 

your assets both inside and outside of Canada require 

careful planning. In order to avoid paying unnecessary 

tax, it is vital to use the most qualified experts available. 

Always consult with a professional who specializes in U.S. 

estate tax to ensure you are properly protected.

Special Update 

on PBP’s LOC 

Status! 

A special meeting with Brian Pincott, Ward 11 

councillor and PBP’s representation to the City is in 

the works. As you may be aware, we have been in 

negotiation since June with the CBE Calgary Board of 

Education who owns the land under our community 

facility for a new License of Occupation (similar to a 

lease, a.k.a. LOC). This is an important issue as the 

City of Calgary has transferred its responsibilities to 

CBE. In doing so, it is subjecting the future viability 

of PBP Community Association to the benevolence 

of the school board. We are currently negotiating 

with the City of Calgary and CBE to change the 

termination and expropriation clause that was 

originally presented to PBP for signature. This 

clause, if accepted by our community as originally 

presented, would have given the CBE unilateral 

rights to terminate the agreement and expropriate 

our community association building with 12 months’ 

notice and *without consideration for alternative 

facilities*. All other community associations who 

have a lease with the City are entitled to be given 

consideration for alternate land and/or building. 

The current building was built with member funds 

and is currently maintained by our hardworking 

volunteers, paid for by your memberships, our 

Casino fundraising and grant money. Our recently 

completed renovations, including roof, consumed 

countless hours and had a big price tag. We will keep 

our community members updated on the status of 

these negotiations which will happen in October.

Calgary has a number of enthusiastic 

knitters, crocheters, designers, felters and 

spinners, but there was never an art show 

dedicated to fibre artists. That’s changing

Alberta’s Largest

the Cougar

The Cougar, also commonly known as the mountain 

lion, is Alberta’s biggest cat. This secretive animal can 

be found in wild areas along the full length of western 

North America, through Mexico and Central America, 

and from coast to coast-in South America. Despite this 

wide distribution, cougars are seldom seen by humans. 

Adult males can weigh up to 90 kg females are smaller, 

averaging about 45 kg. Adults are well camouflaged 

with tawny to grey-brown fur, with black tips on their 

tails and the backs of their ears. Their heads are small 

and round, eyes are brown with large pupils (to see 

their prey in dim light), and their sense of smell is excellent. 

They have a killing bite, sharp teeth to tear off 

chunks of meat, and a rough tongue to clean traces of 

meat of their prey’s bones. Their claws are razor-sharp 

for bringing down moving prey and for climbing trees. 

Their muscles are exceptionally strong, and their skeletons 

bend easily for jumping, stretching and twisting. 

Cougar’s hind legs are longer than their front ones, for 

better spring to pounce on their prey. 

Cougars are highly adaptable and can occupy a wide 

range of habitats, from rocky areas to deserts and forests. 

They live in high to low elevations, and migrate 

with roving food sources, such as moose, elk, caribou, 

and deer. Cougars are hunt-and-wait predators and silently 

lurk in trees or on rocks above an animal trail. They 

stalk when their prey is feeding, pouncing and killing 

with their strong jaws. 

Cougars are solitary animals unless they are with young. 

When a female is ready to give birth she finds a den, often 

in rock piles or caves, or under deep brush or fallen 

trees. Cougars are even known to make use of human 

built structures such as doghouses, sheds and hunting 

cabins. Two or three cubs are born in the den after a 3 

month pregnancy. They are always fawn coloured with 

dark spots for camouflage and born very small (on average 

about 300 g) with closed eyes and ears. If the den 

is threatened by predators or other wandering cougars, 

the mother will move them. Despite this protective care, 

she will often leave her cubs alone in the den as she 

hunts for food to fill their growing bellies. As the little 

ones grow, they practice adult skills just outside the 

safety of the den, chasing one another, stalking, pouncing, 

and wrestling. They develop their hunting skills at 

their mother’s side: learning from her expertise and getting 

experience. They stay with her until they can hunt 

for themselves and leave her for good between 13 and 

24 months old. 

Cougars are considered apex predators, and as such, 

have little to fear from other animals in the wild. In 

Alberta, most common cause of death for cougars is 

hunting. Secondarily, deaths occur as a consequence of 

daily life; fatal injuries result from fights with other cougars 

or from hunting prey, collisions with vehicles, and 

of course, old age (about 10 years in the wild). Human 

encroachment and development, habitat loss and trophy 

hunting increasingly threaten cougar populations.

Alberta Bike Swap 

Alberta Bike Swap is pleased to continue our series of 

articles that will help improve your knowledge of safe 

cycling. A good point to start to every month is the reminder 

that safe cycling is up to all road users. 

Stop means stop. As a cyclist, you must stop at every 

red light, every stop sign, and yield at every yield sign. 

You are at a distinct disadvantage on a bike if you run 

a red light, other vehicles weigh more. Look at where 

a stop sign is in an intersection road, they are set back 

behind the sidewalk. It is very dangerous to ride on a 

sidewalk, vehicles typically pull past the sidewalk before 

they stop. If you are riding a bike on a sidewalk, it is not 

only illegal, you are out of the line of sight for drivers. 

Mechanical safety tips for this month; from the A category 

- make sure you have the right air pressure in you 

tires. From the C category, keep your chain lubed. A dry 

chain wears quickly and can let you down when you 

need it most.

Needed! 

Everyone in the community needs to be aware 

that the PBP’s facilities – main hall, board room, 

new multipurpose room, and ice rink, cannot 

continue without the support of our committed 

volunteer board of directors. As many of our board 

members are completing their two year terms 

(including myself) we will need to fill at least eight 

board director positions to reach our goal of 10 

members for our November AGM (Annual General 

Meeting). Please note that it is just not possible 

for many of our key board members (President, 

Communications Director, Secretary, Treasurer) 

to step up for a second two-year term as personal 

circumstances have changed for many of us. If we 

do not have enough nominations in November we 

run the real risk of losing our non-profit and charity 

status and consequently of losing the rights to our 

facility (rink and building) per the conditions of our 

pending leases with CBE and the city of Calgary. 

Please note that most communities in Calgary have 

12 to 20 board members. Please consider making a 

two-year, once monthly (2 hours, 10 meetings per 

year) commitment to keep a community centre here 

serving the needs of Palliser, Bay View and Pump Hill.

Fall is in full swing! As you’ve noticed there are some exciting developments 

in community spaces around the ward. Some of the 

highlights include a rain garden in Oakridge, skate-parks in Chinook 

Park – Kelvin Grove – Eagle Ridge and in Southwood, and 

little libraries in Kingsland. For other community happenings, like 

a family Halloween event, check in with your Community Association. 

After trick-or-treating, be sure to compost your carved pumpkins 

as the City of Calgary’s Leaf and Pumpkin Composting 

Program is underway. You can bring your bagged leaves and 

pumpkins to a depot near you until November 8th. Depots in 

Ward 11 include: 

• Braeside Athletic Park – 256 Brookpark Drive SW 

• Haysboro Community Centre – 1204, 89th Ave SW 

• Marda Loop Communities Association – 3130, 16th Street SW 

• North Glenmore Park – 6615, 37th Street SW

Composting your leaves and pumpkins keeps them out of the 

landfill, reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions and helps 

turn the leaves and pumpkins into useful compost. Use paper 

yard waste bags to really make a difference, as they can be 

composted with the rest of the material! Please note, no sod 

or rocks are being accepted at these depots. More information 

can be found on calgary.ca/leaf.

Board look to Calgarians to volunteer and share their expertise.

I hope all of you had a great summer and are getting 

ready for a lovely Fall and Thanksgiving season! It has 

been a very exciting summer here in Calgary-Glenmore, 

from my new role as your MLA to meeting many of you 

at amazing community events. I enjoyed many conversations 

I have had with constituents and hearing about 

their views and ideas for this riding. 

I have been fortunate enough to attend a wide variety 

of events over the summer including: serving pancakes 

at Stampede breakfasts in Calgary Glenmore, cheering 

along with the Stampede parade, rowing in a Government 

boat for the Charity Team dragon-boat race on the 

Glenmore Reservoir, visiting the Women’s Centre for an 

engaged discussion about women in poverty, showing 

support at the Calgary Pride Parade, and many speaking 

engagements including the Anti-Bullying Rally and the 

SWCRC’s AGM, and, very importantly, helping to spread 

awareness about ovarian cancer at the Walk for Hope. 

I am also working towards establishing relationships 

with our nine community associations, which work diligently 

to provide many important services to Calgarians, 

by being present at as many monthly meetings as 

possible when I am in Calgary. 

Our office has been up and running since June 29th and 

remains situated at Glenmore Landing Plaza. Please join 

me and other constituents at our Office Opening Meet 

and Greet on Monday, October 19 from 11 am to 1 pm; 

whether it is to say hello or grab a coffee and donut, I

Ring Road project. As this project continues to move 

forward, I will keep you posted as to this ongoing work. 

One of the first orders of business when we return to the 

Alberta Legislature on October 26 will be new budgets 

for 2015/ 2016. If you would like to review the budget
