The seniors from Bishop O’Byrne’s Housing for Seniors
Association’s Carroll Place have joined forces with fellow
knitters in the community for a great cause. Their projects
include sets of mittens, hats, scarves, slippers and
stuffed animals to donate to young Calgary children in
need of warm clothes for the winter, as well as comfort
and support.
The club is currently working towards their next cause,
but they need materials to make this happen! So if you
have any yarn, wool or knitting/crochet needles you
would like to donate, please contact Erika, the Community
Development Officer, at 403-452-5575. Thank you!
I stopped by the Grassroots Farmers’ Market at Northland
Mall in mid-August (ages ago, I know) and saw the
signs that the market will relocate to Deerfoot City next
June. At first I thought it sounded like a long way to go,
but now I think I will be going to do my best to support
the vendors that have been at the market for 25 years!
Kudos to the market organizers for supporting the vendors
and keeping them together, as well as working so
hard to find an accommodating location. Please see the
article inside this issue.
The Brentwood Community Garden has wrapped up
composting program
is underway!
Bring your leaves and pumpkins to a depot near
you until November 8
Fall is in the air – and on the ground. As Calgarians
tidy up their yards they can bring their bagged
leaves and pumpkins to one of our 36 drop-off locations
around the city. By composting this material
it keeps it out of the landfill, reduces harmful
greenhouse gas emissions and helps turn the leaves
and pumpkins into useful compost. We recommend
using paper yard waste bags as they can be composted
with the rest of the material. No sod or rocks
please.
It’s hard to believe the gardening season is wrapping
up already…weren’t we just planting seeds? We’ve had
a great growing season at the Brentwood Community
Garden and we’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to
all of our garden members and volunteers for the immense
effort they put in all year long to keep the garden
looking fabulous! We are thrilled about the construction
of our beautiful pergola – a definite highlight of the
season! We are delighted to be a part of this wonderful
community to grow and share together.
October in the garden means harvesting the last of the
root veggies, squash (if they haven’t frozen already!),
and cool-weather plants such as kale. Comforting fall
food is on the menu around my house, which means using
up some of the root vegetables from the garden. The
following is a go-to recipe for me. (If you are a vegetarian,
just omit the beef and substitute vegetable broth).
Slow-Cooker Cabbage and Beef Soup
• 1 small head red or green cabbage, chopped into bitesized
pieces
• 3 small potatoes, peeled, chopped into bite-sized
pieces
• 3 large carrots, peeled, chopped into bite-sized pieces
• 1 large onion, peeled, finely chopped
• 2 large garlic cloves, peeled, finely chopped
• ½ lb beef stewing meat, chopped into bite-sized pieces
• 2 tbsp vegetable oil
• 2 cups tomato juice
• 2 cups beef broth
• 3 cups water
• 1 bay leaf
• Salt and pepper, to taste
Heat vegetable oil in a small frying pan over
medium heat. Add stewing meat and brown,
turning once, for 5 minutes. Remove from
heat and place meat in the slow cooker. Add
the remaining ingredients and stir to combine.
Place the lid on the slow cooker and set
on “LOW” for 8 to 10 hours. Remove the bay
leaf before ladling soup out into bowls. Serve
piping hot and enjoy!
party is complete without face painting, cake and
Building Safe
Communities
A Reader suggested that the Bugle cover some home
safety issues regarding people coming to the door. I
hope this article provides some information that will
help Brentwood residents stay safe in their homes. This
article is used with permission from the Federation of
Calgary Communities:
The best way to stay safe at home is to keep criminals
out of it. Much of the advice about staying safe at home
may sound obvious, but don’t overlook it – a little bit of
common sense can go a long way in preventing crime.
Don’t Open Your Door to a Stranger.
No one intentionally puts out a welcome mat for a criminal,
yet unsuspecting victims open their doors to intruders
all the time, often without even thinking to ask,
“Who’s there?”
The simplest way to protect yourself at the front door is
to observe the person on the other side before opening
the door — preferably without being seen yourself. Ideally
you would do this through a wide angle door viewer.
If you do not know the person, you can either ignore him
(or her) altogether or speak through the door or intercom
to find out who he is and what he wants.
Trust your instincts. You do not have to be overly paranoid,
but if you are at all suspicious, do not open the
door. As long as your door is closed, you have a relative
degree of safety. Once you open it, however, anything
can happen. And do not rely on a door chain to protect
you if you plan on partially opening the door. These
chains are notoriously ineffective and easy to break if
someone wants to enter your house.
Here’s how to handle different types of people at
your door.
Emergency calls.
Someone comes to your door and says he needs to use
your phone right away. What should you do? First stop
and think. You are home alone and something does not
feel right about the situation. Trust your instincts. Do not
let the individual in.
Instead, offer to call the emergency number so he can
return to the scene and wait for help to arrive. Some con
artists have been known to use the emergency ruse to
get into homes and commit robberies.
Fundraisers and solicitors.
If people come to your door asking for money for a cause
or wanting to sell you a product, and you’re not interested
in the cause or product, simply say so. If you are interested,
either ask them to show identification first, before
you open the door, or request that they leave literature
for you to read. Should the solicitors become rude, ask
them to leave, and then walk away from the door. If they
don’t leave, call the police.
Repairs, deliveries and collections.
Unless you are expecting them, ask repair people and
others who claim to have business with you to hold up
their identification cards for you to see through a door
viewer or door window. If you have the slightest doubt
of their authenticity, telephone their business office to
verify whether the house call is legitimate. You could get
the number from the phone book, information or the Internet.
Do the same with individuals making deliveries
or taking collections. If you are not expecting a floral arrangement,
you can call the florist to clear up any doubts
about the person making the delivery.
Do not leave repair people alone in your home unless
you know them well.
In any of the above situations, if you ask a person to leave
your home and they refuse, or if something about the
person arouses your suspicions, call the police. And if the
person appears to be going door-to-door on your block,
you will want to alert your neighbours.
If you are interested in more safety topics, the Federation
of Calgary Communities has plenty of resources on its
website: www.calgarycommunities.com
The Friends of Nose Hill have some important news regarding
pathway upgrades, art, history and planning.
The City of Calgary will receive $225,000 from Ottawa to
upgrade trails within Nose Hill Park that connect to the
Trans Canada Trail. The world’s longest network of recreational
trails, when fully connected, will stretch 23,000
kms. from Atlantic to Pacific to Arctic oceans.
Nose Hill is a significant example of the Rough Fescue
Native Grassland ecosystem on the Canadian prairies.
Invasive species (weeds) are a constant source of concern.
In spite of its name, the Canada Thistle is from
Europe. This noxious weed is purple-flowered, grows in
patches, and crowds out native plants.
Artist Susan Menzies is working on a project for an exhibition
called “Hare and Thistle” at Stride Art Gallery in
October 2015. She was particularly interested in Canada
Thistle and any information about what role the FONHS
and volunteers play in helping to control this plant in
the park. The City is the primary lead on this because
the roots are strong and it is difficult to eliminate the
weed by hand.
Cory Gross of The Alberta Paleontological Society led
an Ice Age Tour of Nose Hill on Heritage Day. Calgary’s
A chameleon can move its eyes in
two directions at the same time.
News from
the Friends
of Nose Hill
by Anne Burke
geologic past unfolds at Nose Hill, illustrated by bedrock
outcrops, gravel pits, glacial erratics, and spectacular
views of the Bow Valley. Six million years ago the east
side of Nose Hill was a part of Mount Edith Cavell in Jasper
National Park.
Nose Hill Park contains archaeological sites which include
buffalo rubbing stones and tipi rings. The hill was
also a sacred place used for ceremonies and burials. You
can take your own tour with an uphill walk on the paved
pathway to the top of the hill. Start at the 14th St. and 64
Ave. NW parking lot.
The Biodiversity Advisory Committee approved by City
Council will be established at the October 19th meeting
of Council. Appointed members will be researchers,
educators, and members of City Administration. The
Committee will advise City Council, collaborate with
researchers and provide information to communities
and businesses. Representatives from local business, organizations,
academia, and citizens at large are needed.
There will be a work plan to promote the 10-year biodiversity
strategy in City parks, open spaces, and neighbourhoods.
Conservation will be included in planning,
managing, and operating across the City.
Expires November 30, 2015.
Please mark your calendars for the upcoming fall Teas:
October 22, November 26 and December 17, 2015. On October
22nd and November 26th, we will welcome a special guest, Josee Galipeau,
a registered massage therapist and reiki master from Ultimate
Pain Relief Massage Therapy. She will be providing 15 minute neck/
shoulder massages and/or energy work such as reiki or energy healing
free of charge to our seniors. What a treat that will be! Don’t miss out.
All BCA Seniors’ Teas will be held in the upstairs of the Brentwood
Sportsplex building, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. The BCA Seniors’ Tea is
a free event and welcomes ages 55+.
BCA Seniors’ Tea Volunteers NEEDED.
The BCA Seniors’ tea is currently looking for volunteers--people who
like to mingle and have a good time. Tasks include setting up the Seniors’
Brentwood
Development
By Brent Freer
Update on proposed rezoning and development on the
old Esso lot (corner of Brisebois Drive and Northmount
Drive):
The second of two consultations mandated by City
Council was held on Sept. 2nd at the Brentwood Sportsplex.
Representatives from Lupi Homes (the developer),
NORR (architects), the City of Calgary Planning
Dept., Councillor Druh Farrell’s office, and the Brentwood
Community Association met with a group of
home owners who live in close proximity.
NORR gave a presentation on the proposed four storey
development which would hold five shops on the first
floor, offices on the second, plus a total of 12 condos on
the third and fourth floors combined. This led to a discussion
on the key concerns including shadowing, privacy,
traffic and parking. It became clear during these
discussions that both parking and traffic were key aspects.
While the proposal meets the city bylaw for parking
spaces, residents remain concerned as parking is
already very limited in that area. It was noted that multiple
bus stops at the intersection leave little to no on
street parking. The City’s plan to add a bike lane along
Northmount Drive in 2016 will only further compound
the issue. Residents were also concerned about the increase
in lane way traffic and its impact on adjacent residential
streets. The community will need to work with
the City to address all of these issues.
As a next step the developer will be submitting a development
application to the City in anticipation of getting
the go ahead from City Council on a second and third
reading of the rezoning application. A second open
house was requested so that the community has another
opportunity to see what is planned and ask questions.
A Fond Farewell By Kelli Wreford
to the Farmers’ Market
As many Brentwood residents are already aware, the
Grassroots Farmers’ Market will be moving from Northland
Mall to Deerfoot City in 2016. The Market is the largest
and longest running outdoor market in Calgary.
The Market was started in 1992 by Jill Kirker,
Lynn Keating and Nancy Dalton, three local
women who wished to raise money for
environmental causes. When the original organizers
felt the need to step back from the
operation of the Market in 2008, a community
member and long-time Market customer
connected the Market and what was to become
the Grassroots Skaters’
Foundation.
The Foundation is a nonprofit
fundraising organization
that supports the adult
figure skating community. It
is affiliated with the Olympia
Skating Club, which provides
adult figure skating programs
year round and is the sole
adult-only club in Alberta.
The Grassroots Skaters’ Foundation is the only source of
funding for the Olympia Skating Club. Funds raised are
used to subsidize the cost of ice for adults (which is often
much more expensive than for youth), as well as for
bursaries and awards. The Club will be eligible for casinos
and other fundraising opportunities in a few years which
will allow Grassroots to fund workshops and ice shows.
Two years ago, Northland Mall representatives notified
the Farmers’ Market organizers of the intention to
redevelop the mall. The Market was told in June 2015
their lease would not be renewed for 2016. The Market
organizers had to find another location. The size of the
Market, with 40 to 50 vendors, necessitated finding a
location with 3500 square metres of space, plus access
to power and hand washing facilities to meet Alberta
Health bylaws. This space requirement doesn’t include
parking for customers.
Grassroots Farmers’ Market
Coordinator, Janneane Wutze,
says she tried to relocate
closer to Northland Mall
without success. Market Mall
and Sears at North
Hill Mall were not
interested. McMahon
Stadium does
not rent to private
groups and all required
facilities were
not available.
Enter Deerfoot Mall. Deerfoot Mall
approached the Grassroots Farmers’
Market about moving or perhaps starting
a second Market there seven years
ago. Janneane says she put a lot of
work into finding a new location and it
will take a lot of work, time and money
for the Market to move. However she
is happy that she has found a location
where the Mall appreciates the value
of the Farmers’ Market and is supportive
of it. Deerfoot Mall is eager to have the Market, and
there is a good relationship building already. Janneane
is now working toward a smooth transition for Market
vendors and customers for next spring.
Along with many other Brentwood residents, I am sorry
to see the Grassroots Farmers’ Market move. However it
is good to know that the vendors will still have the Market.
Hopefully a lot of regular customers will be able to
see them in their new location. Perhaps those who have
neighbours who can’t make it there on their own could
make some arrangements with them.
I wish you luck and success in your new location, Grassroots!
Watch for an article about the history of the market in a
future Bugle issue.
DRUH FARRELL
WARD 7
Twitter: @DruhFarrell • Facebook: Druh Farrell
The Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation recently
unveiled a proposal for a new multi-sport complex
in West Village to accommodate the professional
and amateur sports teams that they own and operate.
Many Calgarians are excited about new facilities where
they can enjoy watching their Flames, Stampeders, Hitmen,
and Roughnecks play.
The proposal, CalgaryNEXT, requires the City of Calgary
to contribute public money and land. The proposal estimates
that the new facilities would cost around $900
million. The ownership group would contribute $200
million dollars, with the rest coming from the City, general
and special taxes, and a Community Revitalization
Levy (CRL).
Calgarians are proud of their teams, and so am I. They
contribute greatly to Calgary’s identity and civic pride.
However, several critical questions and considerations
need to be addressed:
• The current proposal does not factor in the value of the
land.
• Portions of the proposed location are contaminated.
Studies are required to determine the extent of the
contamination and clean-up costs, which could exceed
several hundred million dollars. Who pays for the
clean up?
• Who pays for the unfunded components of the project,
including major transportation and utility upgrades?
Can the transportation system handle the intensity of
use generated by a multi-sport complex?
• The costs of repurposing or demolishing the Saddledome
and McMahon Stadium have not been
included. Is downtown the best location for a field
house? How will the loss of the Saddledome concession
revenues impact the viability of the Calgary
Stampede?
• A CRL is essentially a loan on future tax revenue, generated
within a fixed boundary and term. Can West Village
generate sufficient CRL dollars to fund the infrastructure
required for redevelopment of West Village,
plus an arena?
• CRLs can be high-risk ventures. To mitigate risk, a CRL
needs a stable financial anchor. Where will the tax revenue
come from to repay the CRL, considering the current
Saddledome does not pay property tax?
• Should public dollars be used to fund a private, forprofit
corporation? Will the corporation share revenues?
I do not doubt that the need for modern sports and
entertainment facilities exists. The City must first take a
step back though, answer fundamental questions about
the future of West Village, and require a comprehensive
business case to ensure that this proposal is in the best
interests of Calgarians. I look forward to reviewing a
business case and discussing the proposal with Ward
7 residents, the ownership group and my Council colleagues.
Twentieth Anniversary
Summer Summary:
Thanks for your Giving
With the autumnal equinox of 1995 marking the formal
Whispering Woods Adopt-a-Park commitment with
City of Calgary Parks, summer 2015 marked an amazing
twenty years of collaborative community-school-city
shared stewardship. What an enduring legacy has been
created by so many!
We had wonderful turnouts of brand new and veteran
enthusiastic helpers, especially for the season’s windup
potluck, despite turbulent August lightning and hailstorms
or that smoke laden air from the wildfires in
Washington and British Columbia. Remarkably, FOUR of
the Chairs of the Dr. E.W. Coffin School Council’s Environmental
Committee, established in 1992, were gathered
together at the final potluck: Karen Gummo, Polly
Knowlton Cockett, Deb Hall, and Ulla Kalny.
Whether enjoying and researching our glorious native
prairie plants, pulling out alien invasive species, wandering
through and saying hello, playing on the nearby
playground, providing support through phone calls,
emails, shared walks, or contributing to – or simply attending
– potlucks, neighbours from near and far met
as new friends and old in the Centennial Natureground
and Whispering Woods during 7 organized events as
well as on several informal occasions over the season.
Participants from Brentwood and Beyond include: Polly
Knowlton Cockett; Madeleine Oldershaw; Jill Liu, Joseph
(Grade 5), and Jessen; Dan Larkin; Debbie Hall, Eric Hall,
and Gwen; Judith Hall; Doug and Audrey Andrews;
Laryssa Hart & children; Robin Cockett; University of
Calgary Computer Science graduate students Jonathan
Gallagher, Prashant Kumar, Chad Nester, and
Ben MacAdam; Visiting Dalhousie Professor Dorette
Pronk; Alumni Principal of Dr. Coffin School Juane
Priest; Storyteller Karen Gummo; and many, many
more behind the scenes.
Special thanks to Donna Hamby and Meredith Boyer,
teachers at Dr. E.W. Coffin School, and Ulla Kalny, Chair
of the Environment Committee there, for organizing
volunteer families from the school to join in these Native
Biodiversity Bees, as well as families each week to
tend the Sun Circle gardens, including alumni students
and parents! Participants include: Neemat Rajan; Ulla
Kalny & Samantha, Julie, Nicole (Grades 7, 5, 5); Irena
Karst; Maryam Yakili Rad; Amy Palmer & Danielle; Stacey
Hamel & children; Shannon King & Jasper, Sierra, Tavish;
Amy Remmer & Dahlia, Liam (Grades 2, Preschool); Dinishi
Jayasinghe & Kavisha, Anuki (Grades 4, Preschool);
Alyssa Aska & Odin, Freya (Grades 3, 1); Rebecca Ghelfi
& Isabel, Senna, Arianna (Grades 1, Preschool); Jung Lee
& Claire, Ashton (Grades 2, K); Debbie Huang & James
(Grade 6); Donna Hamby; Meredith Boyer; and all those
on the homefront supporting their efforts.
Each year, as our reclaimed and restored prairie continues
to mature, so do the interconnections within the
greater community of which we are a part.
Thank you so very much to everyone listed above, and
all those I missed, for your ongoing interest and support.
Dear Gabby,
The students in my son’s school class each received a small
pine tree last year. The tree was so tiny, I was afraid to plant
it out in the open, so I planted it in a large pot. The tree is
doing very well now, and I would like to plant it in the yard.
Do you have some advice about when to move it (before
winter or in spring) and where to move it (yard location)? I
would appreciate your help.
Thank you,
Janice
Dear Janice,
Ideally it would be best to plant the little pine in the
spring. Keeping in mind its size, I would recommend a
southeast location on your property. I am also assuming
that it will grow into a regular pine tree eventually
reaching a height of 20 to 30 feet, so be sure to plant it
at least 12 feet away from the house. I hope this information
has helped you.
