The yearly Community Clean-up was a great success 

with many volunteers participating. We would like to 

extend a “Thank You” from the community to Abalon 

Construction, CPU Pizza and the City of Calgary for volunteers, 

equipment and food during the event. 

Cedarbrae Community AGM was held on September 15, 

2015, for results and any changes watch the next issue 

of this newsletter, website, Facebook and twitter. 

A few maintenance items took place: The Centres Communication 

Board received a face lift and new lights were 

installed, Security System Upgrade along with anew 

gymnasium viewing screen installed in the foyer, The 

main floor meeting room, hallway and kitchen have received 

new flooring, we received a new upright freezer 

from ENMAX energy optimization grant, New auto flushing 

valves and toilets have been installed in main floor 

meeting room washrooms. 

Our Casino Sponsor Event will take place at the Deerfoot 

Inn and Casino on October 4 and 5, 2015, watch the 

next issue, website, Facebook and twitter for updates 

on the event. 

Kids Clothes and Toys in conjunction with Sport Swap 

took place and help many families to access items for 

their family needs in our neighborhood.

located at 11430 Braeside Drive SW since 1996 and serves 

Calgarians in a variety of ways! The station is staffed 

entirely by volunteers from the adjoining communities and 

is managed by two Calgary Police Service constables. 

HOW CAN WE ASSIST YOU? 

Have you been in an accident and require a damage 

sticker to legally get your car fixed? 

Have you had your vehicle broken into? 

Were items stolen from your vehicle? 

Have you had your personal property damaged and 

need to complete a report for insurance purposes?

Benefits of Community 

Membership 

Your community association is a group of volunteers 

who work to make your community a great place to live 

for residents of all ages. It provides: a voice for the 

community on changes and new developments that 

affect residents; information, programs and support, 

low cost recreation, sports and social activities and discounts 

for members on various goods and services. 

Become a member. When you purchase a membership 

in your community association, your dues are used to 

offer you and your neighbours many programs and 

activities. 

Become a volunteer. Community Associations rely on 

volunteers to make things happen. There are many 

ways you can volunteer to make your community a 

more enjoyable place to live. At the same time you will 

make new friends and learn skills. 

You can become involved with your community association 

in two important ways: 

Your Community 

Ten Good Reasons to Join 

• Programs and Services for all ages. Preschoolers to 

seniors, community associations offer programs directly 

or provide support to other organizations offering 

programs. 

Association: 

• Sports. Community Associations offer you recreational 

and sports opportunities. 

• Community Safety. Block Watch, Block Parent and bicycle 

safety programs are examples of how community 

associations ensure safety in the neighbourhood. 

• Special Events. Many events are provided throughout 

the year that provide an opportunity to meet others 

in the community and have some fun. Events include 

the Stampede Breakfast, Children’s Christmas Party, 

Community Cleanup Weekend, and others are always 

in development. 

• Awareness and Responsive to Planning and Development 

Issues. The community association makes 

every effort to keep track of development and planning 

proposals in the area such as transportation, 

park development, and traffic issues. The City of Calgary 

often consults with the community association 

on these issues. 

• Community Newsletter. The community association 

communicates to the residents the activities, programs 

and services that are happening in the community 

through a regular newsletter. 

• Facility Operations and Rentals. Many community 

associations operate a facility that is available for 

programs, meetings, social and private functions. 

Outdoor tennis courts are also maintained for the 

benefit of the community residents. 

• Membership does have its benefits. Certain events 

offered in the community by independent groups/ 

individuals offer discounts on registration to community 

members. 

• Representing the Community on Regional Committees 

and Initiatives. Community association designates 

represent the community on regional issues of 

interest such as major parks, major infrastructure 

projects in the area or social issues. 

• Improving the Quality of Life. Community Associations 

are created by individuals who want to improve 

the quality of life for themselves and others in the 

community. Share the feeling of community pride — 

become a community association member and volunteer. 

Community Associations are a great place to belong.

Contest Winner 

The winner of the Cedarbrae Community League Association 

contest is Shantell Krystal. 

Shantell moved from Regina to Calgary 27 years ago. 

She has lived in the Cedarbrae community for 19 years. 

Shantell is married with two children. A daughter, 15, 

and a son, 6. 

I asked Shantell what she likes about this community. 

She loves the proximity to Fish Creek Park, the mature 

trees. It’s so convenient for shopping, schools and amenities. 

Nothing is too far away. You don’t feel you’re in a 

big city; it has a small town feel. 

A while ago, she was considering moving. After driving 

around various other communities, she realized there 

was no other place than Cedarbrae that she wanted to 

be. So they remained in their house and are very happy 

they did so.

Bring your leaves and pumpkins to a depot near 

you until November 8. 

Fall is in the air – and on the ground. As Calgarians clean 

up their yards they can bring their bagged leaves and 

pumpkins to one of our 36 drop-off locations around 

the city. By composting this material it keeps it out of 

the landfill, reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions 

and helps turn the leaves and pumpkins into useful 

compost. We recommend using paper yard waste bags 

as they can be composted with the rest of the material. 

No sod or rocks please.

SWCRC is expanding its parenting education programming.

isolated parents, we would like to offer free child care for 

the parents’ young children. As a member of our team of 

Parenting Group Assistants, you will support the parenting 

education staff and the parents by providing a safe, loving 

and fun environment for the children in which to socialize 

and learn through engagement in activities appropriate to 

their developmental stage. The time commitment is 2 ½ 

hours, 9:30 – noon, either Tuesdays or Thursdays.

your desire to contribute your knowledge and experience 

towards a community effort to optimize children’s social,

Fall is in full swing! As you’ve noticed there are some exciting developments 

in community spaces around the ward. Some of the 

highlights include a rain garden in Oakridge, skate-parks in Chinook 

Park – Kelvin Grove – Eagle Ridge and in Southwood, and 

little libraries in Kingsland. For other community happenings, like 

a family Halloween event, check in with your Community Association. 

After trick-or-treating, be sure to compost your carved pumpkins 

as the City of Calgary’s Leaf and Pumpkin Composting

I hope all of you had a great summer and are getting 

ready for a lovely Fall and Thanksgiving season! It has 

been a very exciting summer here in Calgary-Glenmore, 

from my new role as your MLA to meeting many of you 

at amazing community events. I enjoyed many conversations 

I have had with constituents and hearing about 

their views and ideas for this riding. 

I have been fortunate enough to attend a wide variety 

of events over the summer including: serving pancakes 

at Stampede breakfasts in Calgary Glenmore, cheering 

along with the Stampede parade, rowing in a Government 

boat for the Charity Team dragon-boat race on the 

Glenmore Reservoir, visiting the Women’s Centre for an 

engaged discussion about women in poverty, showing 

support at the Calgary Pride Parade, and many speaking 

engagements including the Anti-Bullying Rally and the 

SWCRC’s AGM, and, very importantly, helping to spread 

awareness about ovarian cancer at the Walk for Hope. 

I am also working towards establishing relationships 

with our nine community associations, which work diligently 

to provide many important services to Calgarians, 

by being present at as many monthly meetings as 

possible when I am in Calgary. 

Our office has been up and running since June 29th and 

remains situated at Glenmore Landing Plaza. Please join 

me and other constituents at our Office Opening Meet 

and Greet on Monday, October 19 from 11 am to 1 pm; 

whether it is to say hello or grab a coffee and donut, I 

look forward to meeting you. My office can always be

would like to book an appointment for an in-person 

meeting with me. 

I will continue to keep you up to date with current and 

relevant government news. One of the most important 

matters in Calgary-Glenmore is the Southwest Calgary 

Ring Road project. As this project continues to move 

forward, I will keep you posted as to this ongoing work. 

One of the first orders of business when we return to the 

Alberta Legislature on October 26 will be new budgets 

for 2015/ 2016. If you would like to review the budget 

reports, please log on to the Government of Alberta 

website, www.alberta.ca. 

As the changing colour of the leaves become more visible 

- my stories of the happenings, events, updates and 

more will become more visible to you as well by launching 

our newly developed website, so stay posted.
