President's
message
By Leslie DeGagne
I live in a house where I get to watch the sun come
up every morning. I see the sky go from ebony to the
most beautiful purples and reds we can imagine. As this
amazing miracle of silhouettes against a painted sky
occurs, I see the birds begin to fill the skies and watch
as the people emerge on to the silent streets, slowly filling
them with cars on their way to their daily activities.
As a child I remember the ant farms of the elementary
science rooms and how as children we would watch as
they tunnelled through the sand busily making their
way from place to place. Our city is like that ant farm
with our roads growing and changing to meet the
needs of the growing population. Calgary at this time is
relatively small compared with other cities of the world
so our roads are smaller and luckily it takes only a little
time to escape the growing maze this city is becoming.
A year ago my husband and I visited Beijing and were
introduced to a city of contradictions and more population
than I could have ever imagined. The quiet time
of day is before six a.m. and the sun rise is a red fireball
emerging on the smoky gray horizon. No longer are
there five million bicycles, instead we spend the day
dodging five million cars and scooters to go with them.
The very wealthy live alongside the struggling poor and
the two worlds coexist but never intersect. One group
has the ability to leave the maze but the other spends
their days never seeing a blue sky unless it is on a billboard
or T.V. This is their reality and it is becoming the
reality of many large cities as populations rise.
We are lucky to live in a young city where change can
be monitored and discussed. Citizens still are able to
be heard and Calgary was built as a city of communities
each with their own distinct identity. Thorncliffe
Greenview is just one of many communities in the
ever changing city of Calgary. At this time we are able
to use our distinct identity to ensure that needs of our
residents are met. These needs are brought to the attention
of our board and this volunteer board then communicates
the challenges to the residents hoping for
feedback. We use the board room table to make decisions
that affect every resident of the community. These
decisions may involve large things like McKnight Blvd.
widening and the future of the Greenview Commons
area, or just simple things like what building maintenance
takes priority this year or what special events need
to be planned for the community. I have been extremely
lucky to work over the last eight or so years with people
who care about the community their children are being
raised in. These people have taken the time to be involved
and have made a difference for all the residents
of this great community. In October we hold an AGM
and elect a board to represent the needs of the residents.
I hope everyone takes some time envision what
they want their community to look like and then ask
the question “Can I make a difference?” If the answer is
yes then come on out to the AGM and volunteer to be a
part of the TGCA board of directors. Personally I hope to
see the sun rise like it does now over the City of Calgary
even if we become a huge city like Beijing twenty years
from now. I hope to live in a community that is connected
to its residents and I am glad that I was able to play a
role in keeping TGCA a family friendly community.
I’d like to thank Tammy Dundas and her volunteers for
coming out last month in the pouring rain and once
again putting on a great community cleanup recycle
depot. Thank you to all the directors and executive of
the board for their hard work over the last year.
For those who have moved on to greener pastures your
shoes will be hard to fill and for those who are continuing
on thank you for your dedication and friendship. See
you all at the AGM.
According to the bylaws of the community, we will have
three elected vice presidents who fulfill roles as community
need dictates. Each VP will:
• Attend the once per month meetings.
• Work with the president and treasurer to set community
direction.
• Take on the president’s role when the president is otherwise
committed.
• Work directly with directors at large to form and chair
committees.
• Act as mentors to the directors making sure they are
comfortable with the workings of the complex.
• Act as the voice of the programs at meetings when the
director is unavailable.
Role of the Treasurer
The treasure is in charge of overseeing the fiscal aspect
of the complex and community programs. These responsibilities
include:
• Overseeing budgets of the complex and community
programs ensuring they meet the standards set out by
the Executive of the community with input from the
general manager.
• Work with the president to oversee complex spending.
(once a week check signing)
• Set up committees when needed to create maintenance
programs and budgets for the building.
• Communicate to the board once monthly the state of
expenses and revenues as it pertains to the complex
and programs.
• Work with groups to set up attainable financial goals.
• Work with the GM and Bookkeeper to ensure proper
accounting procedures.
• Oversee community investments, maximizing investments
without jeopardizing the integrity of the
members.
• Set up a finance committee when needed to plan for
large maintenance projects. This includes creating a
total financial plan involving grants, fundraising and
scope of work. The committee must include the GM,
President and at least one other Vice President.
• Oversee the TGCA business plan.
• Have an understanding of the ALCB bingo license as it
pertains to spending guidelines.
• Appoint an Auditor for the yearly audit of financial
statements.
Role of the Secretary
This person must be able to:
• Attend monthly meetings.
• Assist the chair of the meeting by keeping the meeting
on task.
• Record minutes of both executive and board meetings.
• Maintain a copy of all motions and reports submitting
a copy to the complex manager for filing on site.
• Write communications when requested to fulfill board
needs.
• Set out a consistent protocol for committee meeting
minutes as to maintain standardized minutes for all
complex business.
• Maintain professional objectivity and respect the privacy
of the meeting when recording minutes.
Role of a Director at Large
This person must be willing to:
• Attend all monthly board and General meetings or if
unable to send a report to their VP communicating
their activities for the month.
• Act as a liaison with the youth and service groups of the
community. At times, this will mean attending committee
meetings representing the TGCA point of view.
• Work with a VP ensuring TGCA policy applies when
dealing with community program needs. This includes
producing budgets, keeping proper minutes of meetings,
booking rooms and setting up meetings with
outside entities
• The executive based on community need, will assign
the director’s role. Communities are fluid so we need
directors to be able to fill position as dictated by need.
The past saw static defined roles but we have found
that the changing face of the community has allowed
us to create a more dynamic use of the volunteer director.
With the youth groups amalgamated within a zone
or regional group the job of overseeing and meeting
their needs according to TGCA policy has fallen on the
General Manager of the community and his/her staff.
of the community residents. Often a strong membership
representation is an indication that our association is
serving the needs of the community and is therefore,
valued and supported by its residents. Your support
today is important and ensures new energy to continually
address community issues. Your membership fee goes
towards community events, programs & operating costs.
All new members must provide I.D. with current address.
Members agree to abide by the bylaws, policies and
procedures governing the Thorncliffe Greenview
to notify the office of any address changes. If you wish to
retain your membership after moving out of community
boundaries, you must pay for it each year before expiry
date. Failure to do so will result in the loss of your
membership, no exceptions. Memberships will not be
renewed if membership is not in good standing. Anyone
over the age of 18 must hold their own membership.
Waiver
I understand that the Thorncliffe Greenview Community
Why everyone should try it?
Software and computers are virtually everywhere and
are changing the world. Programming improves logical
thinking and self-esteem, teaches patience, precision
and persistence. Many well-known people
from the IT industry started coding at a very young age:
Mark Zuckerberg (11 years old), Bill Gates (13 years old)
or Elon Musk (10 years old) to name a few.
Everyone attending our courses will acquire solid dose
of algorithms, programming and STEM knowledge
while having tons of fun!
What do we code in?
Junior adepts (8-13 years old)
Scrach and Alice – learn basics of computer programming
and algorithms. Both platforms allow to create 2D
and 3D games, stories and videos using a technic called
“visual programming”.
Senior adepts (12-18 years old)
Minecraft and Robocode learn real programming language
– Java (one of top 5 most popular programming
languages in the world). Create mods of Minecraft and
battle robo-tank Al to fight against friend’s robo-tanks.
Leaf & Pumpkin
composting program is
underway!
Bring your leaves and pumpkins to a depot near
you until November 8
Fall is in the air – and on the ground. As Calgarians tidy
up their yards they can bring their bagged leaves and
pumpkins to one of our 36 drop-off locations around
the city. By composting this material it keeps it out of
the landfill, reduces harmful greenhouse gas emissions
and helps turn the leaves and pumpkins into
useful compost. We recommend using paper yard
waste bags as they can be composted with the rest of
the material. No sod or rocks please.
Animal & Bylaw - Halloween
Partners for Safety
For the 21st year, On Oct. 31, the Calgary Partners for Safety will
be patrolling Calgary streets to give trick-or-treaters easy access
to help. That means more than 800 City vehicles will patrol
Calgary streets from 6pm to 8pm, making sure this will be a
safe Halloween. All children or adults who need assistance can
approach any City vehicle for help.
The program is designed to take a proactive approach to Halloween
safety and has two objectives:
• To provide Halloween safety information to parents and children.
• To patrol communities on Halloween night.
The Calgary Halloween Partners for Safety, coordinated by Calgary’s
Child Magazine, includes the Calgary Animal & Bylaw
Services, the Calgary Fire Department, the Calgary Police Service,
Calgary Transit, Emergency Medical Services, Calgary Public
Safety Communications (9-1-1) and Shaw Communications.
Between calls, Calgary Police Service and Emergency Medical Services
will have units patrolling residential neighbourhoods. This
will provide a high visibility for the youngsters trick-or-treating.
The Calgary Fire Department will also have vehicles on patrol, and
fire stations will be open as a safe place for our youngsters.
Calgary Transit’s buses and C-Trains are in the community providing
transit service from early morning until late at night.
If young trick-or-treaters need assistance, they can approach
any transit vehicle they spot. Each vehicle has a radio and in
an emergency, the bus or C-Train operator can contact the appropriate
emergency personnel.
Tips for safe trick or treating
• Wear bright and reflective costumes that do not drag on the
ground.
• Choose shoes that fit well and masks that do not limit vision.
• Children should plan their route and advise parents of where
they will be and when they will return.
• Remind children not to enter houses or cars.
• Be aware of your location at all times. Should you need to call
911, knowing your exact location will enable responders to
get to you quickly.
• Trick-or-treaters should visit houses on one side of the street
at a time and use cross walks to cross the street.
• Keep your home well lit for trick-or-treaters and clear your
walkway of debris and snow or ice.
• If driving on Halloween night, keep your speed to 20km/h in
all residential areas.
Alberta Bike Swap
Alberta Bike Swap is pleased to continue our series
of articles that will help improve your knowledge of
safe cycling. A good point to start to every month is
the reminder that safe cycling is up to all road users.
Stop means stop. As a cyclist, you must stop at every
red light, every stop sign, and yield at every yield sign.
You are at a distinct disadvantage on a bike if you run
a red light, other vehicles weigh more. Look at where
a stop sign is in an intersection road, they are set back
behind the sidewalk. It is very dangerous to ride on a
sidewalk, vehicles typically pull past the sidewalk before
they stop. If you are riding a bike on a sidewalk,
it is not only illegal, you are out of the line of sight for
drivers.
Mechanical safety tips for this month; from the A category
- make sure you have the right air pressure in
you tires. From the C category, keep your chain lubed.
A dry chain wears quickly and can let you down when
you need it most.
If a supply of our Safe Cycling card would help your
community group could, please email us at alberta
Recycle Depot
Despite the weather, we held a very successful Recycle
Depot on Saturday, September 5th. Thanks to everyone
who participated.
I will provide a better summary of all we collected, who
to thank, and the agency we supported in the next
Horizon.
Let’s talk about FOOD!
You are invited to a conversation about food in Highland
Park, Thorncliffe, Greenview & Tuxedo
Calgary’s Cooking: This is a group of people that plan
meals and cook together once a month in order to
cook healthy, budget friendly meals and build relationships.
To start one in this area, we need volunteers to
coordinate and at least six people to join.
Spinz Around: Calgary’s Cooking rescues food from local
merchants that may otherwise have been discarded
and distributes it to folks in need. We are exploring setting
this up in our area. We would need volunteers to
help with food pick up, distribution and organization.
Good Food Box: The Good Food Box gives people a
way to buy fresh fruits & vegetables at a low cost once a
month. Come find out where the depots are in our area
and how the program works.
When: Monday, October 19th at 7:00pm
Where: Thornhill Baptist Church 128 Tache Ave NW
RSVP: Call (403) 274-6555 or email tbckids@telus.net by
October 15.
*If you require child care, let us know.
If you cannot make the meeting, but are interested in
any of these activities, contact Amy Herauf at 403-219-
3477 ext. 127 or email: aherauf@aspenfamily.org.
Brought to you by: Thorncliffe, Greenview, Highland Park & Tuxedo
Park Strong Neighbourhood Collaborative. These communities
have joined together to make our neighbourhoods stronger.
In the meantime please be very mindful of what you put
in your blue bin. Check out the City of Calgary’s website:
What goes where? You may be surprised the items that
SHOULD NOT be going in your bin.
The leaf and pumpkin drop off will run from September
25 – November 8. Check out the City of Calgary’s website
for locations. Please take all these organics to the
drop offs and avoid putting in your black bin. Organics
in your black bin; do not break down and will never be
usable again. By bringing to the drop off locations your
greens can become useable compost.
Thanks,
Tammy
From Ottawa the City will receive $225,000 to upgrade
trails within Nose Hill Park that connect to the Trans
Canada Trail. The world’s longest network of recreational
trails, when fully connected, will stretch 23,000 km from
Atlantic to Pacific to Arctic oceans.
The Rough Fescue native grassland on Nose Hill is a
significant example of this ecosystem on the Canadian
prairies. Invasive species (weeds) are a constant source
of concern. The Canada Thistle despite its name is from
Europe. This noxious weed is purple-flowered, grows in
patches, and crowds out native plants.
An artist is working on a project (for an exhibition called
“Hare and Thistle” at Stride Art Gallery in October 2015).
She was particularly interested in Canada Thistle and
any information about what role the FONHS (and volunteers)
play in helping to control this plant in the park.
The City is the primary lead on this because the roots are
strong and it is difficult to eliminate the weed by hand.
There was an Ice Age Tour of Nose Hill on Heritage Day.
The east side of Nose Hill was once a part of Mount
Edith Cavell in Jasper National Park. This period was 6
News from
the Friends
of Nose Hill
by Anne Burke
million years ago. The tour guide was from the Alberta
Paleontologist Society. Our Sandstone City’s geologic
past unfolds at Nose Hill, by bedrock outcrops, gravel
pits, glacial erratics, and spectacular views of the Bow
Valley. The pre-history includes buffalo rubbing stones
and tipi rings. The hill was also a sacred place used for
ceremonies and burials. You can take your own tour
with an uphill walk on paved pathway to the top of the
hill. Start at the 14th S. NW and 64 Ave. parking lot.
The Biodiversity Advisory Committee approved by City
Council will be established at the Oct. 19 meeting of
Council. The report was based on best practices in Scotland,
New Hampshire, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Appointed members will be researchers, educators,
and other specialists. There will be regular meetings,
subcommittees, and consultations with industry. The
aim is for direct access to government. Representatives
from local business, organizations, academia, and
citizens at large are needed. There will be a work plan to
promote the 10-year biodiversity strategy in City parks,
open space, and neighbourhoods. Conservation will be
Greetings from Councillor Sean Chu,
Today, Calgary’s population is 1.19 million and will increase
to about 1.89 million in the next 30 years. It is estimated
that the Green Line will service 41 million passengers
annually.
Fun Facts:
• The Green Line will
use low-floor trains
which have similar
capacity to current
CTrains (780 passengers/3
car train), and
carry over 8 times the number of passengers of an articulated
bus.
• Ride times will be cut in half on the southeast leg of
the Green Line with the completion of LRT; current ride
times are clocked at about 69 minutes to the downtown
core from the southeast; this will be reduced to about
35 minutes.
• Calgary has the first wind-powered light rail transit system
in North America and reduced CO2 emissions by
over 56,000 tonnes in 2012.
• 290,000 Calgarians are estimated to live along the Green
Line corridor (including the Centre City and Beltline), estimated
to increase to 465,000 by 2043.
• Total city population is 1.19 million today, increasing to
1.89 million by 2043.
