Program Description: Our 65-hour, brief-residency MFA in<br />

<strong>Writing</strong> combines superb instruction with unparalleled flexibility.<br />

Each semester of the program begins with a ten-day residency, in<br />

which students and faculty gather for an intensive workshopping<br />

and learning experience. At the conclusion of the residency,<br />

students return home <strong>to</strong> study independently with a faculty men<strong>to</strong>r<br />

for the rest of the semester. During the semester, each instruc<strong>to</strong>r<br />

supervises a small number of students, and each student’s program<br />

is highly individualized <strong>to</strong> meet each student at his or her level of<br />

writing. Students may cus<strong>to</strong>mize the location, season, and pace of<br />

their studies.<br />

Program Description: At S<strong>to</strong>ny Brook Southamp<strong>to</strong>n, we<br />

welcome aspiring writers who seek <strong>to</strong> create original work primarily<br />

in fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction. We offer guidance that is<br />

friendly, rigorous, professionally useful and hands on. Enrollment<br />

in our writing workshops is capped at twelve. Unlike most MFA<br />

programs, ours encourages students <strong>to</strong> take workshops in all<br />

kinds of writing, rather than being tracked upon acceptance in<strong>to</strong> a<br />

single genre. We invite students <strong>to</strong> explore, in the belief that writing<br />

outside their genres informs their primary areas of interest. Beyond<br />

the familiar categories of fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction,<br />

we offer workshops in other forms of creative expression relevant<br />

<strong>to</strong> understanding and mastering a world constructed out of words<br />

and images. Recent course offerings have included graphic novel,<br />

children’s literature, and poetry with a bookmaking emphasis.<br />
