Fashion Tech
with Maartje Dijkstra and Miranda Davis
Maartje Dijkstra is a fashion designer based in
Rotterdam, Netherlands. Miranda Davis is a creative
producer based in London. After the demonstration
of their unique designs at Interlaced 2015, we
wanted to know more about them. Focus.
Maartje Dijkstra
“I started my fashion label in 2007, creating
high fashion collections, accessories, illustrations
and fashion technology outfits. My designs
are spherical, manual made, sculptural and
progressive, designed with the future in mind.
For me, fashion is about telling a personal story,
using a living being with personality as a tool to
show what can be done in fashion now and in
the future. What I also like about fashion tech,
is working with great artists; so I do a lot of
cooperation with music producers, programmers
and performance artists.
My biggest inspiration comes from electronic
music like Jungle, Hard-core, Ambient and
Techno, all with an old school, melancholic and
mysterious atmosphere. Also the extreme and
beautiful complexity of nature, imagination and
live experiences are a big source of inspiration to
create.
The most important thing about my fashion tech
pieces is the combination between personal
craftsmanship and technology. For the first time
I'm creating a pret-a-porter collection named
Chitin Noise. This collection is totally created out
of silk/polyester wires and patterns that I literally
have illustrated, with a 3D printer and a flexible
material, a graphical, open, organic and strong
structure. The pieces have the same thickness as
leather, but the look is more like lace.
I designed and create a fashion tech prototype
named Hard Core Vein 2.0 last year (3D printed,
transparent veins) in cooperation with the music
producer Newk. This piece needs another
prototype with the goal of creating a perfect piece.
We need more resources, because it is a very
progressive piece and we still have issues with the
3D printing. Two more exiting fashion tech pieces
in combination with music are coming up, and the
production of the pret-a-porter and new jewellery
collection are a big focus point at this moment.
What’s the future? For me it would be amazing to
be part of London fashion week, to show my new
and existing pret-a-porter collection to a bigger
crowd, and show what is possible with fabrics,
created with new technology”.
Miranda Davis
“As a creative producer, I help people to stand-out
and imagine ways in which we can take a story
further, to really touch people, to connect people.
I have a burgeoning fashion tech startup, with
huge ideas for the innovations in next generation
potential, responsive garments, conscious
collaborative fashion and connected environments.
I work in a fluid practice, with all sorts of
companies: Oracle, Volvo, Netil 360, Secret
Garden Party, Quintessentially Events, Wilderness,
TEDx London, and Barclays to name a few.
For my project, #theDress, in collaboration with
House of Fraser, I was the lead creative – on
the idea and vision and the project producer. I
was given the space to suggest a way to make
