<strong>Afghanistan</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>2015</strong><br />

Encourag<strong>in</strong>gly, even <strong>in</strong> the face of the overall downturn <strong>in</strong> national mood this year, 75% of Afghans say<br />

they are generally happy <strong>in</strong> their lives. Long-term survey data s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004 shows that Afghans have seen<br />

progress <strong>in</strong> the delivery of basic government services that most developed countries take for granted.<br />

Education is absolutely crucial for Afghans, and two-thirds of respondents report satisfaction with the<br />

quality of education for children. Nearly three out of four Afghans report satisfaction with access to<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water, a long-term improvement s<strong>in</strong>ce 2006. Year after year, the survey and others <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Afghanistan</strong>’s development rem<strong>in</strong>d us that the steady ga<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the delivery of basic public services—<br />

health, education, roads, dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water, sanitation—make an enormous difference <strong>in</strong> people’s lives and<br />

are an antidote to extremism, <strong>in</strong>stability, and vulnerability.<br />

A Survey of the Afghan People is unique <strong>in</strong> its long duration and broad scope. This annual survey provides<br />

a picture of a nation undergo<strong>in</strong>g extraord<strong>in</strong>ary change, and the concerns, hopes, and experiences that<br />

accompany such change. For a country that has endured decades of loss and unrest, the survey f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

serve as a valuable resource to <strong>in</strong>form the policies and programs of the Afghan government as it strives to<br />

fulfill national aspirations for self-sufficiency. The survey is also a useful rem<strong>in</strong>der for the <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

community to rema<strong>in</strong> a steady and patient partner <strong>in</strong> <strong>Afghanistan</strong>’s ongo<strong>in</strong>g struggle to achieve peace<br />

and prosperity for its people.<br />
