Direct pursuit by dogs is the most common, but they<br />

may also be captured by us<strong>in</strong>g a harpoon, a snare, a<br />

stick to knock them out or <strong>in</strong>to the water, by burn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

their reed bed habitat or just by chas<strong>in</strong>g them down<br />

(Copsey et al. 2009a,b). Commercial dra<strong>in</strong>age projects<br />

represent a potential threat. Regular burn<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

cattle pasture and facilitate local fish<strong>in</strong>g reduces suitable<br />

lemur habitat and also promotes the <strong>in</strong>vasion of exotic<br />

plant species that may choke the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g marshes.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the most recent IUCN Red List<br />

assessment, H. alaotrensis is now Critically Endangered<br />

(Andriahol<strong>in</strong>ir<strong>in</strong>a et al. 2014). Their numbers have<br />

decreased from >10,000 <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> 1994 (Mutschler<br />

and Feistner 1995) to
