ABSTRACT
The article presents a reflection on science museum, from its educational and
communicational dimension, focused on the scientific instruments of its
collections and its connection with the history of science. These are recognized
resources, so how privileged to remind that scientific production is supported by
numerous relationships and activities. In this proposal what is under discussion is
the appreciation of museum objects and the addressing issues of science under a
social and cultural perspective, in order to facilitate public understanding of
science. Especially from the second half of the twentieth century, the
communication in museums and science centers, focused on their different
visitors, opt, almost exclusively, by a decontextualized strategy that prioritizes the
presentation of scientific phenomena, building this way a historical disconnect and
too fragmented knowledge. Aware of the significant absences, this guidance
cause, the content introduced in the article seeks to highlight the important role of
museums for the dissemination of science once confirming their historical
perspective. In this direction, based on the History of Science the effort today is to
broaden the interpretation of the museum objects (scientific instruments),
revealing its intangibility and adding to them diverse dimensions of science,
comprising the act of scientific creation, the processes of knowledge and its
relation to man and society. It is therefore an approach that can help people give
significance to the scientific contents. To this end, the article presents the
Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences – MAST, which is been promoting
studies and educational practices, with this approach, along its three decades of
existence. Experiments implemented underline thereby its museum conception
dedicated to the scientific culture.
