LIBRA Campaigner Receives<br />

Melvin Jones Fellowship Award<br />

Dedicated LIBRA supporter Trevor Jones, from Woking, received aMelvin Jones<br />

Fellowship on 2 nd December 2015 in recognition of his outstanding fundraising<br />

efforts for the Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA)<br />

Trevor received lifesaving<br />

treatment for Acute Myeloid<br />

Leukaemia under the<br />

supervision of the<br />

Haematology team atKing’s<br />

College Hospital and he<br />

decided to launch a<br />

fundraising campaign for<br />

LIBRA as away of giving<br />

something back to the<br />

Haematology Department.<br />

With the support of family<br />

and friends, he launched a<br />

campaign on 1 st March 2013<br />

and within 18 months<br />

£20,000 had been raised.<br />

Trevor received the MJF<br />

Award during the LIBRA AGM at<br />

King’s and was congratulated by<br />

Trustees, along with many special<br />

guests including Nick Moberly, Chief<br />

Executive ofKing’s College Hospital,<br />

and Professor Ghulam Mufti, Head of<br />

King’s Haematology Department.<br />

District Governor of 105 SE Lion Bob<br />

Prebble presented Trevor with the<br />

award, alongside Lion Alan Bartlett of<br />

Woking Lions Club. Alan, former<br />

LIBRA Treasurer, and the members of<br />

Woking Lions Club made the MJF<br />

Award application earlier this year.<br />

They provided Trevor with support<br />

during his campaign and he also<br />

attended some of their Club<br />

meetings.<br />

Following the award presentation<br />

Trevor made atouching speech and<br />

he commented: “I am humbled to<br />

receive this prestigious award and<br />

would like tosay ahuge thank you.<br />

Ireceived such great care at King’s<br />

and can’t thank the haematology<br />

team enough. When Iwas receiving<br />

treatment Ipicked up aLIBRA<br />

newsletter and decided to raise funds<br />

for the charity asitsupports the<br />

department that saved mylife.<br />

“I am also grateful to the nursing<br />

staff at King’s, my friends and family<br />

who have supported me throughout<br />

my treatment. Iwill treasure the<br />

award and really appreciate Woking<br />

Lions Club securing it for me. Iam<br />

delighted that the funds we have<br />

raised will help to save the lives of<br />

other blood cancer patients.”<br />

Trevor, the figurehead of the<br />

fundraising campaign, his wife Julie<br />

and their close friend Ann Roberts<br />

organised various fundraising<br />

activities for LIBRA and inspired<br />

others to get involved. From race<br />

nights and pamper evenings, through<br />

to amagic supper and Grand Finale<br />

Ball –Trevor and his team worked<br />

tirelessly to generate funds. One of<br />

their biggest achievements was<br />

securing a£3,000 grant from the<br />

Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2013<br />

for Woking.<br />

The funds raised by Trevor and his<br />

family have been donated to LIBRA’s<br />

Giving 4Growth Campaign inaid of<br />

the Haematology Department. The<br />

campaign target is £200,000 and<br />

these funds are urgently required for<br />

the development of three laboratories<br />

The Rayne Cell Therapy Suite is<br />

dedicated to the manufacture of<br />

advanced experimental therapies<br />

including anew cell vaccine by<br />

immune gene therapy for the<br />

treatment ofAcute Myeloid<br />

Leukaemia (AML), the first of its kind<br />

in the world.<br />
