Diabetes Screening<br />

This year, the Lions of 105-I have<br />

broken their own record of 7,210<br />

and screened 7,912 people in three<br />

days!<br />

Between 22 nd -24 th September 2015,<br />

the Lions ofIreland offered free<br />

diabetes screening to anyone over<br />

the age of 18 attending the National<br />

Ploughing Championships held at<br />

Stradbally, Co. Laois.<br />

Over the three days, there were 63<br />

nurses and 75 Lions on hand that<br />

were divided into six shifts, working<br />

two shifts per day. Of the 7,912<br />

people tested 693 or 8.8% were<br />

referred to their own GPs for further<br />

checks and tests.<br />

• District PR Officer, Frank Corr did<br />

agreat job prior to the event and<br />

ensured that we hit the ground<br />

running.<br />

• Caroline Foley Kearns, our PR<br />

officer, did it again she got alive<br />

interview with Alan Cantwell on<br />

ITV. She had us on Facebook and<br />

several radio stations. We even<br />

got alook in with Marty and Aine<br />

Lawlor on RTE TV.<br />

• Lion Laurence O’Keeffe,<br />

Portarlington LC operated as site<br />

manager and had all of us toing<br />

the line. He was ably supported<br />

by the “Back Room Team”<br />

comprising ofShane O’Neill and<br />

Collette Kennedy all from<br />

Portarlington LC, along with VDG<br />

Paul Allen and last but not least<br />

PDG Liam Lyons, all of whom<br />

gave of their time for all three<br />

days and ensured that the wheels<br />

were kept well oiled.<br />

• Typifying the spirit of all the<br />

participants Lion Mary Barsum<br />

O’Regan, who is president of<br />

Bantry LC, left her home at 4AM<br />

on Wed morning and worked a<br />

full shift with us as anurse when<br />

she arrived at our site, now that<br />

shows commitment.<br />

• Finally Ishould acknowledge the<br />

help and support that we got<br />

from our IPIP Lion Joe Preston<br />

and his wife Joni who paid us a<br />

SUMMARY OF RESULTS<br />

visit onTuesday morning. Indeed<br />

Anna May came to greet them and<br />

her daughter Anna Marie to whom<br />

DG Marion made the presentation of<br />

aHumanitarian award.<br />

Thanks to all for your magnificent<br />

efforts to make this project such a<br />

success but especially to DG Marion<br />

for crunching the numbers and<br />

producing statistics.<br />
