Back To School: Get a Smart Start to the School Year
(BPT) - The start of the new school year is fast approaching. It's a time
when kids will rush back to the classroom, ready to see their friends,
enter a new grade and jump back into sports. While the last month of
summer can be eaten up by never ending to-do lists, there are plenty
of ways to make the transition from the carefree days of summer to the
school year a breeze for parents and students alike.
The key is getting organized and easing back into a routine so it doesn't
feel like such an adjustment for the family. The following tips help both
students and parents ease any last minute jitters and instead feel ready
to conquer the year.
• Plan outfits early: Nothing can throw off a morning routine like
hearing, "Mom! I can't find my shoes!" The week before school starts,
organize your child's closet with them, ensuring shoes, shirt and pants
all live in their designated areas. Then, you can easily pick out outfits for
the entire first week, allowing your child to infuse their personal style
and guarantee excitement for the ever-important first day of school
outfit. This will help establish the routine of always laying clothes out
ahead of time, so getting dressed is a snap!
• Conquer the routine: You can't spell lunch without PB&J. Never
miss an ingredient with your digital personal assistant. With Microsoft's
Windows 10 you can have Cortana remind you to get bread the next
time you drive past a grocery store. Lisa Gurry, Microsoft's consumer
lifestyle expert, says, "With my kids' school 20 minutes away, I rely on
Cortana to alert me if traffic is causing a longer-than-normal commute.
Cortana is a lifesaver!" With carpool and shopping done, your parent of
the year award will be pending!
• Reschedule bedtime: Long summer days mean later bedtimes. Two
weeks before school starts, get your kids back on course by easing into
earlier bedtime, but don't forget to wake them up earlier too! Setting
daily reminders on your phone will keep you and your kids on track.
• Upgrade your tech without breaking the bank: The only thing that
moves faster than summer is tech innovation. This school year the best
tech money can buy just might be free and waiting on your student's
PC. Microsoft has made its latest software available for free with
Windows 10, bringing users a suite of new features, including Cortana.
To upgrade, visit www.Windows.com.
Whether it's your child's first year in the classroom or you're a
carpool veteran, following these tips will ensure you have a smart and
successful start to the school year.
Italian Proverbs
Ciao Amici,
I thought I would share These Italian
Proverbs that people followed in Roseto
Valfortore in the early 1900’s
10 Rules for a Good Family Life
Joe DeFranco
1. Fear God and respect the saints or else
you will really repent it.
2. The father is the father and he is experienced. The son will never
fail if he imitates him.
3. The elders are prudent and experienced. Do as they do and you
will learn to prosper
4. Always honor and obey your parents: then even the stones will
love you.
5. If you don’t listen to your helpful mother, everything will turn into
crap right in your pants.
6. Father is master
7. Experience is power
8. Work hard, work always, and you will never know hunger.
9. Work honestly and don’t think of the rest.
10. Whoever doesn’t want to work dies like a dog
If only these rules applied in this day and age what a different world
we would be living in.
Activated Charcoal
By Jackie Talero-Rueda, The Crunchy Mom
One of the things I will never leave without when going
away on vacation or business (especially out of the
country) is activated charcoal. I have used it to treat food
poisoning, indigestion, and prevent and treat hangovers. It’s a natural
substances mother nature gave us to help rid of toxins trapped in our
body. Activated charcoal is nothing like the chemical filled charcoal
purchased for the grill. Activated charcoal is a fine, black powder that
is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. It is often used in high doses in
emergency rooms to treat accidental poisoning. Activated charcoal is
estimated to reduce absorption of poisonous substances up to 60%. It
works by adsorbing chemicals, thus reducing their toxicity, through the
entire length of the stomach and GI tract. In other words, the toxins bind
to the charcoal and are carried out of the body. Activated charcoal is often
given after the stomach is pumped at hospitals. Stomach pumping is only
effective immediately after swallowing a toxic substance (within about
one-half hour) and does not have effects that reach beyond the stomach
as activated charcoal does. Activated charcoal can be used to naturally
whiten teeth. Sprinkle a small amount on your toothbrush and brush 2-3
times a week. Do not use if you have veneers or crowns as it could stain
them. To help prevent a hangover take 2 capsules before or after a night
of drinking with a glass of water. More may be taken but start with 2. To
alleviate gas or bloating from a meal take 2 capsules with a glass of water
before and drink another glass of water after the meal. If you suspect
food poisoning take up to 5 capsules with plenty of water. It’s very
important to drink water throughout the day to help the activated charcoal
do its job. In case of accidental ingestion of a poisonous substance
call poison control center immediately and tell them you have activated
charcoal on hand. They will advice how much to use. Activated charcoal is
also excellent for the treatment of spider bites and acne. For spider bites
mix with coconut oil, apply on bite and bandage it. Reapply every couple
hours. For acne mix a little with aloe vera gel and apply all over face as
a mask, let dry and rinse off. It may also be used as a spot treatment.
The activated charcoal binds with environmental toxins and dirt that
contribute to acne. Other uses for activated charcoal
include lowering high cholesterol, using as a detox,
mold cleansing, and water filtration. Be careful with
furniture, grout, and other porous surfaces when
using as it stains everything. Take 3 hours prior or
between taking mediation and other supplements as
it will adsorb and prevent the body from absorbing
it. Always consult a health care professional before
starting any new supplements.
Chalk Walk Blazeatron:
A Tribute to Blaze Buskirk
Submitted By Gwen Thomas
On July 20th, nine days after his 23
birthday, the world lost one of the best
people one would ever have the pleasure
of knowing, Blaze Buskirk. I was lucky
enough to be one of those people as he
was a close friend. The news was heart
breaking and every where I went, I was taunted by the reminder that he
was gone. I would never have the chance to see him again. A day later,
we were blessed with a beautiful, red, yellow, orange and pink blazing
sky. Above that, a rainbow and the purest
white cloud. I was not the only one to see a
butterfly linger around for a moment, which is
commonly associated with the death of a loved
one. Other friends all in seperate places, also
had a comforting sign that Blaze was still with
us, and would always be with us. A few days
later his girlfriend Sterling Long and best friend
Cassie Farrell held a chalk memorial, "Chalk
Sterling Long (Blaze's
Girlfriend) and
Cassie Farrell (Blaze &
Sterling's best friend)
Walk Blazeatron", at the Portland, PA. walking
bridge for all his friends to "chalk up" the
bridge and celebrate the life he lived and the
impact he made on all of us. Everyone one was
welcome, strangers and friends alike came to decorate the bridge in
his honor. There was music played by his friends, chalk drawings above
the bridge, paint underneath it,
flowers lining the bridge and
some people even swam under
to the bridge piers to draw
more chalk memorials on the
piers themselves. Some chalk
memorial tributes stated "Blaze
it" "Fly high" and personal
messages demonstrating
Blaze Buskirk
Jeremy Smith and Tanner Oliver
inspiration and the impact his life had made upon everyone he met in
the best way someone can. It was truly an amazing example of unity,
love, freedom and celebration of his life. I don't think anyone truly
knows how much and how many people love them. He knows now. We
are all truly blessed to have held a place in his heart as he does in ours,
no matter how heavy that may be now. I think of him everyday and I
doubt that will change for any of his friends and family. He taught us to
love freely, and to be kind and
helpful to anyone and anything
when you have the chance, and
to live as wildly and beautifully
as you can. "I'll take the
beauty of my chaos over ugly
perfection." Live and love the
way that life suits you and live
it to the fullest and don't forget
to take the time to do so, life is
short for all of us.
Sterling Long (Blaze's Girlfriend)
Roi and the Secret People performed
Saturday, August 8th at Musikfest
Renowned for their exciting live
shows, Roi and the Secret People
(RSP) features the mesmerizing
voice of Mike Roi and the musical
talents of Craig Martyn on drums,
Jason Hedrington on Moog/Keys,
Glen Radomski on bass and Ed
Golden on Guitar. Roi, who hails
from South Florida, set out to
assemble a group of talented,
experienced, and like-minded
musicians to create the version of
rock music he was raised with. Armed with all original music, RSP has
played such renowned clubs as Rockwood Music Hall, Mercury Lounge
and Arlene’s Grocery in New York City and The World Live Cafe,The
Northstar Bar, The Tin Angel, and The Legendary Dobbs in Philadelphia.
RSP's first album, Dog St., includes a variety of tunes from the stunning,
haunting song, “Firefly,” to the balls-to-the- wall sound of the title track
“Dog St.” Their newly released 2nd album, Phoenix, blends Roi’s pop
sensibilities with an alternative rock twist mired in sounds from the likes
of Nick Lowe to Tom Petty. Roi has been known to say that all he needs
is a good bottle of bourbon, a good cigar, and a guitar to create the
kind of true-blue, sexy, and salt-of-the earth music that has captivated
audiences in up and down the Eastern seaboard. Eclectic, diverse, and
thoroughly original, RSP is a band that combines a classic alt/rock vibe
with a lyrical, wholly unique sound.
Arctic Symphony
ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
by Brian Potopowitz
It was the time of endless night, dark, cold, and brutal. But then, it was always
that way, wasn’t it? Oh, who could remember? There were vague flashes of a
different sky, a different ground, and the cold replaced by the penetrating feeling
of warmth. An icy wind blew the flickering memories away and they were
replaced by the feeling of being too exposed in this open space. No bushes to
screen, no trees to shield, and very far to go for cover yet the compulsion to
be in this place at this time was very strong. The wind shifted and a new smell
drifted down from above which triggered an image but the fight or flight instinct
was not activated. It felt strange but at the same time it was right.
The observer sat high above on an outcropping of rock concentrating on
a small object in a large treeless field a short way down from his vantage
point. After a time he allowed his gaze to retract for just a moment and
refocus on the entire landscape about him. The field below surrendered
at the edges to patches of evergreen trees that dotted the foothills and
finally gave way to jagged mountain peaks all around. The left quarter
of the ancient caldera had long crumbled away allowing a spectacular
view of a large valley and more mountains in the distance. A thick layer
of snow blanketed the ground and was only broken by the pine trees that
meandered down to cover the valley below.
Shifting his attention back to the clearing, he zoomed in and refocused his
gaze back onto the object he had been watching for some time now. Not
many would have noticed it there as it was very small and blended in with
the snow quite well. The moonlight cast a shadow and the outline triggered
an image but the basic instinct to hunt was not activated. It felt strange but
at that moment it was right and in a burst of speed he was fluid and moving
quickly down the hillside toward the treeless area below.
In no time the observer was at the edge of the clearing still within the
protection of the shadows of the trees. From his vantage point he could
clearly see the arctic hare sitting in the middle of that empty space. He
became aware of his tongue licking his nose and the smell was not right but
it did not matter as he moved forward. Sensing movement the hare turned
his head slightly to the left to see the pure white alpha male of this regions
wolf pack step out of the shadows and move toward him. The hare’s hearing
was sharp and even at this distance the familiar squeaky crunch of dry snow
depressing under each foot fall could easily be heard. His sleek body and
long angular head were becoming crystal clear and his smell overpowering
with each new step and it was not until the wolf was only inches away did
he stop. The hare did not move and as he watched, the sides of the larger
animal pulsed as mist escaped his nostrils between each breath.
Shadows moved as two more wolves appeared behind the alpha male one
to each side. The left was a darker shade and his head was tilted down,
eyes glaring like his brother. The one on the right was darker still and as her
nose twitched a flash of ivory teeth came into view. As the two remained
perfectly still the alpha male slowly inched forward until he was directly
above the hare and their eyes met in this way for a time as they both sniffed
the air between them. With a huff the alpha male blinked and his eyes
appeared softer, his brow became unfurrowed, and his ears took on a much
less threatening angle on his head. Turning his attention to the female, he
approached and nuzzled her on the neck and the two of them sank into the
snow next to each other. Twelve more were coming out of the woods now to
join the rest. Several sat down together obviously mated pairs while three
wrestled with each other and the last moved, very slowly, to join the pack.
None of them paid any attention to the hare as he watched them all enter
the clearing from the pine forest and so he turned back to the direction he
had originally been facing. He noticed that off to the right near the edge of
the clearing two arctic foxes had arrived and they sat next to each other
touching noses. A lynx was rolling in the snow nearby as a herd of caribou
thundered up from the valley and meandered about for a time pawing at
the snow until their obvious agitation began to ease. As the animals settled
down they all turned their attention toward the sky. The night was punctured
by countless stars of all different sizes shining and sparkling down upon the
land as the crystallized snow was carried up by the wind to try to join them.
The Milky Way spattered itself through the center of the multitude like a
haze high above and as the stars winked and the snow flashed it was hard
to tell where the earth met the sky.
They all knew what was coming as the ethereal green glow began to form
from nothingness. Each creature had been drawn to this place not by what
they could see but by what they felt from within. Long before the light began
to form in the sky there was a sound that no human could ever hear. It always
started very softly as though the wind took on a slightly different pitch and
progressed to a louder static hissing. Later it would take on, in human terms,
the sounds of a groaning, creaking wooden sailing ship. Suddenly there was
a whisper in the wind and the breath of heaven surged as light erupted and
the aurora borealis was awakened. Long, vaporous tendrils formed above
the black fire of the night sky. They moved about as many and then merged
into one, expanded, separated, twisted, formed and deformed by the subtle
breathing of that which is so far away and yet so close. The colors began to
morph from green to yellow to red and back again cascading through the
mist and leaping like static from one ghostly form to the next. Hues changed
from brilliant to subdued, from bright and crisp slashes to dark and writhing
sheets barely visible over the speckled black void of space.
Any human being would have been rendered speechless, hypnotized by
the view of something so uncommon in nature yet every eye in the clearing
was closed. With the onset of the show of lights the noise had changed
becoming louder and less random taking on a much more musical quality.
As each note played out and merged with the rest the biting subzero
temperature could no longer be felt as a blanket of warmth fell upon the
plain and each creature felt a connectedness to all the others that were
there. If any human could have heard the sounds coming down from the
sky they would most likely have described it as whale song. Who knew how
long it lasted for at the time of the endless night it was hard to tell. The stars
had moved and the moon was in a different place. The music had softened
as the lights in the sky faded back to that slight green haze. The creaking
had lowered to a dull static and the wind took on a different pitch.
As the hare’s senses returned to the snow covered mountain he began
to hear the crunching of the snow from many distant footfalls. When he
was content to open his eyes he could tell that the only creature left in the
clearing was the alpha male. He turned his head to the left and saw that
the wolf was sitting upright and looking at him. His eyes were kind and the
corner of his mouth was turned up ever so slightly and as he lowered his
gaze he rose and walked slowly away only to turn for one last quick glance
and then he was fluid, off in a cloud of crystal snow and gone into the forest.
Shortly there after the last of the glow winked out and the all too familiar,
“Ahhooooo” from the alpha male could be heard calling to his brothers the
wolves, the caribou, the lynx, the fox, and the arctic hare. The music that
was heard that night was much more than a series of beautiful sounds. It
penetrated the fiber of each wild creature and brought them together as one.
The music broke the barrier of hunter and hunted and allowed them, for a brief
time, to enjoy the presence of each other. The arctic symphony of the aurora
borealis was nature’s song of peace and that night it did not fall on deaf ears.
As the bitter chill returned the hare shook himself to bring warmth back to
his body. He sat for a time with his paws rubbing the cold from his nose
as the memories of the night began to fade but while some of them still
lingered he looked up one last time into the sky, closed his eyes, and smiled.
