BETT FUTURES Introducing the edtech companies of the future It is the second year of the Bett Futures fringe initiative – a showcase of the world’s most inspiring edtech startups. We look at this year’s exhibitor and speaker line-up Bett Futures was the third most popular area of the show for visitors to Bett 2015. Introduced to celebrate brave thinking, new products and education “gamechangers”, Bett 2016 has once again invited 31 of the most exciting edtech start-ups from around the world to Bett Futures. Due to the nature of Bett Futures, some of the 2015 companies are back again, with their “a year on” stories to tell. The two Bett Futures packages are the Seed Level package, aimed at emerging startups, and the Grow package, designed for businesses that are already gaining exposure and developing their networks. Below is an overview of this year’s Bett Futures exhibitors, starting with the 16 Seed edtech start-ups and followed by the 15 Grow companies. Also, on page 14, you can find details of some of the CPD and discussion sessions taking place in the Bett Futures Theatre during the show. Big Brain Maths The first of the Seed exhibitors is Big Brain Maths. Their lessons have been designed to guide students through a range of topics, with the challenge becoming progressively harder. The practical worksheets provide the students with GCSE and Higher GCSE common exam questions. Visit: www.bigbrainmaths.com Brix Learning The second Seed exhibitor is another mathsrelated exhibitor. Brix Learning has created interactive maths homework for A level coursework. Replacing the maths textbook, Brix provides a simple structure with which students can master new mathematical concepts. The syllabus is broken down into the individual pieces of information (the Bricks) that need to be understood. Designed for all ages, the resource helps students to understand the complex concepts of molecules and atoms by inviting them to play, grab and manipulate the system. Physical gestures and dynamic graphics respond to their input in real-time, making it an entertaining way to discover chemistry and physics. Visit: http://nanosimbox.com/ Lumici Slate Lumici is an educational technologies company whose flagship product is Lumici Slate, which – among other functions – allows teachers to create, store and share lesson plans that can be accessed anytime, anywhere or shared with students and other teachers. Visit: www.lumici.co.uk TeachPitch This online resource for teachers helps them gather knowledge of their subject, develop the pedagogy of teaching it, learn about student assessment practice and get support for their classroom management. It is a cloud-based learning platform that helps teachers and schools identify the best online resources available. Visit: www.teachpitch.com VEO VEO App is another new exhibitor whose video-tagging tool combines the power of video and data to maximise the impact of self/peer review and dialogue. Tagging key moments in peer-observed lessons for later reflection helps teachers to improve their practice. Visit: www.veo-group.com Diagnostic Questions Diagnostic Questions is a formative assessment platform designed to help teachers enhance the quality and relevance of their teaching. Teachers choose and assign quizzes from a bank of diagnostic questions. Students then answer the questions and provide explanations as to how they made their choices. The quizzes are automatically marked. Visit: www.diagnosticquestions.com EduCake Science-related exhibitor is EduCake is used by schools to set regular homework to improve their students’ scientific knowledge and understanding. This online application offers more than 6,000 science questions and has coverage of AQA, Edexcel, OCR Gateway and Cambridge iGCSE. BETT FUTURES Pixie All the way from Madrid, Pixie Learn to Code offers teachers of students aged 10 to 16, a support system to teach programming. Created from a standard system based on visual blocks of code (Blockly) and inspired by Scratch, this new coding language uses a logic and problem-solving strategy, to design projects and communicate new ideas. Visit: www.pixie.es Ada Core Another programming resource comes from Ada Core, which provides software solutions for Ada, a programming language designed for large, long-lived applications where safety, security and reliability are critical. Visit: www.thisisada.com Mathscraft A primary product, Mathscraft is a multiplayer maths game aligned with the national curriculum objectives for key stage 2 students. Visit: www.mathscraft.com Domoscio Domoscio’s solution is based on the belief that after just one month, 80 per cent of what we learn is forgotten. Domoscio offers an adaptive memory solution. An interesting concept for key stage 4 is CV Plus, a tool to help students build a CV, with guidance and tips at each stage. Visit: www.domoscio.com One Globe Kids One Globe Kids is an app that focuses on global learning and aims to bring pupils as close as possible to real peers around the globe. The app was developed to help pupils draw connections between their life and the lives of children in other countries. The software lets you connect with your school’s old students, launch professional networks, coordinate fundraising and leverage careers support from former students. Visit: www.pelicanconnect.com CV Plus CV Plus helps students to build a CV, with guidance and tips at each step. It also allows students to record skills, achievements and interests online using video, files, weblinks, testimonials, text and image. Students can share portfolio posts by weblink, or print them out as articles. Visit: www.cvplus.co Class App Schools wanting to enhance their communication between parents and students can visit Class App, a school communication app which enables schools to communicate directly and instantly with parents and/or students. Visit: https://classapp.com.br/ Berkfield The first of the 15 Grow exhibitors this year is Berkfield. With more than 72 per cent of adults having a SmartPhone, Berkfield has built hundreds of iPhone and Android education mobile apps for primary and secondary schools. The company asks schools to imagine what their own mobile app would do for them. Visit: http://berkfield.co.uk/edu/ Alphabet Babies Alphabet Babies offers language, literacy and communication programmes for the early years, for both professional settings and parents. Visit: www.alphabetbabies.com Cerebriti Squizr is a cultural games portal with hundreds of games to test students’ knowledge. The portal has been designed so that students can search for the educationally aligned game they want. Students can compete with their friends and class mates to determine who is the most knowledgeable. Visit: www.cerebriti.com Klaxoon Klaxoon is a collection of ideas that facilitate interactivity within a group. Based on your content, you can propose simple and effective educational activities, such as tests and quizzes, surveys, challenges, brain-storming activities, live messaging and so on.
