So by the time 1970 rolled over to 1971,
they still had some ’70-model 240z’s
lingering around in dealerships. They
just looked over at all the 70-models and
said, “Hmmmm, ok those are 71s now”.
Simpler times.
Datsun moved them out over that year
along with the actual 1971-manufactured
240s. These first 2 years of the 240z are
called the Series-1 cars, and then the
first updates came to the car in ’72.
So how do you distinguish a Series-1
car from a later model? The 70 & 71 had
fresh-air vents on the rear hatch. For 72,
those vents were removed, as they were
realized to be sucking exhaust fumes
into the cabin. Also, the emblem on the
C-pillar of Series-1 cars says ‘240Z’.
On 72+ models, once the model was
more established, it just said ‘Z’. There
were a few other minuscule differences
in the interior & steering wheel - but
overall, that’s how you can quick-spot
your 70-71.
