- Fourth-seeded Clemson claimed its first ACC title since 2001 with a
2-1 victory over sixth-seeded Louisville in double-overtime in the ACC
Championship game at Cary, North Carolina, on Nov. 16. The Tigers prevailed
in the extra periods after tying the score on Paul Clowes’ goal – his first of
the season – with just three seconds remaining in regulation.
- With seven representatives, the ACC led all conferences in NCAA Tournament
bids for the second consecutive year.
- Five league teams made the NCAA field as top 16 seeds – Notre Dame (No.
1), Clemson (7), Syracuse (9), Louisville (13) and Virginia (16). At least one
ACC team has reached the NCAA Men’s College Cup each of the last 14 years.
- No. 16 seed Virginia defeated No. 2 seed UCLA, 4-2, in a penalty-kick
shootout in the 2014 national championship game on Dec. 14, bringing
home the school’s seventh NCAA Men’s Soccer title.
- the 2014 NCAA Men’s Soccer championship by Virginia marked the seventh
in the last 10 years by an ACC team and the 17th in league history.
- Five ACC student-athletes were named Academic All-Americans, the most
from any conference in the nation.
- Six ACC teams, three of which were No. 1, earned Top-10 rankings in the
NSCAA or Soccer America polls.
- the ACC led all NCAA conferences in first-round picks (five) and selections in
the first two rounds (nine) in the MLS SuperDraft.
