- NOTRE DAME captured the ACC title as the league held its first Men’s Fencing<br />

Championship since 1980 on Feb. 21 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It marked<br />

the return of fencing as a sanctioned championship sport to the ACC,<br />

which previously held a men’s championship for 10 seasons, from 1971<br />

through 1980.<br />

- The Fighting Irish, in their first season of ACC fencing competition, finished<br />

the Championship team competition with a perfect 3-0 record. Notre Dame<br />

was led by its foil squad, which defeated Boston College and Duke by 8-1<br />

scores and blanked North Carolina 9-0 for a combined tally of 25-2.<br />

- Notre Dame’s Ariel DeSmet was named the ACC Championship MVP after<br />

posting a 7-0 record in the foil competition.<br />

- Two of the ACC’s four teams – Notre Dame at No. 3 and Duke at No. 9 –<br />

finished the regular season ranked among the nation’s top 10 by<br />

CollegeFencing360.com.<br />

- Notre Dame led ACC teams in NCAA competition with <strong>15</strong>6 total points<br />

(combined men’s and women’s) to place third overall. Duke was ninth with<br />

67, while Boston College finished in 20th place with 16 points and North<br />

Carolina in 21st with <strong>15</strong>.<br />

- Nine men fencers from the ACC earned spots in the 20<strong>15</strong> NCAA<br />

Championships, which were held March 19-22 at Ohio State.<br />
