Garden Peas
As a rule, smooth seeded varieties are more
starchy and used for soups while wrinkle seeded
varieties are sweeter.
Alaska (aka Earliest of All)
55 days — Introduced in 1881 by pea breeder
Thomas Laxton. The plants are 24 to 36 inches tall
and grow well in cool soils. Typically five to eight
smooth peas in each round pod. Used for canning
or freezing but fine fresh or dried for soups.

Alderman (aka Tall Telephone)
75 days — An old English variety. It does require
support as it will climb to about six feet. Pods are
large (up to 4 inches), with 5 to 9 wrinkled peas

Badger
68 days — Plants are erect, moderately branching
and reach 18 to 24 inches in height. The pods are
three and a half to four inches long and contain
about nine wrinkled peas each.

Early Frosty
65 days — The vines are wilt resistant, uniform,
reaching 28 to 30 inches and benefit from some
support. It is a prolific freezing variety. Pods are
about 4 inches long, blunt-ended, dark green in
color, and containing 7 to 8 wrinkled peas each.
Good fresh or frozen. Released in 1966.

Early Perfection 326
66 days — Vines reach 3 feet, are sturdy, drought
tolerant and wilt resistant. Pods are straight, blunttipped,
3½ inches long, and contain 7 to 8 wrinkled

color and texture well. Dates back to the 1950s.

Freezonian
60 days — This is a cross of ‘Thomas Laxton’ with
‘World’s Record’. The vines are vigorous, 36 to 48
inches tall with heavy yields of three-inch pods

Green Arrow
70 days — Popular with commercial processors
and home gardeners as it has high yields and
freezes well, has an excellent flavor, and exhibits

Wando
70 days — Although it is resistant to the effects of
heat and therefore used for late sowings, it
pollinates well under cooler conditions. Plants are
