FLOATING PHOTOGRAPHY<br />

Test your skills as a renewable<br />

energy engineer! Work as a team<br />

to complete a series of challenges<br />

to send a helium balloon into<br />

the sky and take bird’s-eye view<br />

photographs. Learn about fuel<br />

cells, computer programming,<br />

and sustainable engineering in a<br />

fast-paced, fun-filled workshop!<br />

The photographs you take will be<br />

available online to download after<br />

the workshop.<br />

LED SKETCHING<br />

Join in on this hands-on<br />

workshop, for all ages and artistic<br />

abilities, that brings the worlds<br />

of science and art together.<br />

Photography is one of the best<br />

examples of where science and art<br />

merge and in this workshop with<br />

Dr Kathryn Harkup you will learn<br />

how to paint, sketch and doodle<br />

with light and get the chance to<br />

create beautiful images, using long<br />

exposure photography and a bit of<br />

science along the way.<br />

VIDEO GAME DESIGN<br />

WITH KODU <br />

Would you like to create and<br />

play your own video game using<br />

an Xbox controller? Then this<br />

ComputerXplorers workshop is<br />

for you! You will use a graphical<br />

programming environment to<br />

design and build games on a PC,<br />

using an Xbox controller to help<br />

you build your game quickly.<br />

You’ll create a range of worlds<br />

and terrains and build characters<br />

whose movement, sound and<br />

vision can be controlled using an<br />

intuitive icon-based programming<br />

language.<br />

DEMONSTRATION BUILD <br />

Help build a house in an<br />

afternoon! Join volunteers from<br />

the Fountainbridge Canalside<br />

Initiative, who built the UK’s first<br />

community WikiHouse, to put<br />

together the pieces. WikiHouse<br />

is an open source building system<br />

with many designers collaborating<br />

to make it simple for everyone<br />

to design, print and assemble<br />

beautiful, low-energy homes.<br />

Come along and see just how easy<br />

it is by taking part in our build.<br />

An interactive show for 8–12<br />

year olds, Uncanny Valley asks<br />

you, the audience, to interact<br />

with a real ‘live’ robot and help<br />

to tell the story of Ada and her<br />

best friend OKAY (Outstandingly<br />

Knowledgeable Android Youth).<br />

Watch as OKAY grows and<br />

learns, join in by asking your own<br />

questions and see if you can really<br />

tell the difference between a robot<br />

and a human being. Written by<br />

Rob Drummond and presented by<br />

Borderline Theatre.<br />

ROALD DAHL’S<br />

MARVELLOUS MEDICINE <br />

Roald Dahl, the beloved creator<br />

of children’s novels and adult<br />

short stories, was fascinated<br />

with medicine, and had a lasting<br />

impact on it. Join his doctor, Prof<br />

Tom Solomon, who uses Roald’s<br />

stories to explain how the body<br />

works, what can go wrong and<br />

how we can fix it. He describes<br />

how Roald invented a medical<br />

device and new treatment still<br />

used today. You’ll also produce<br />

Gobblefunk and learn how to make<br />

your own marvellous medicine.<br />

EXTREME SOLDERING<br />

show you the tricks and techniques<br />

to help you solder on.<br />
