Government’s announcement of<br />

a shortlist of possible sites of a<br />

British Spaceport, the chances are<br />

high that the next generation of<br />

space-launch vehicles could find a<br />

home in Scotland. Join Steve Lee<br />

of Astrosat, Dr Hina Bacai from<br />

the Scottish Centre of Excellence<br />

in Satellite Applications and<br />

other experts as they discuss the<br />

EXHIBITION<br />

SYMMETRIES IN LIGHT<br />

This international exhibition by<br />

the Japan Kaleidoscope Museum<br />

and the Universities of Edinburgh<br />

and St Andrews, celebrates the<br />

life and work of Scottish physicist<br />

Dr David Brewster who invented<br />

the kaleidoscope 200 years<br />

ago. Featuring kaleidoscopes<br />

of different sizes, styles and<br />

principles, including some<br />

beautiful examples brought over<br />

to the UK specially, the exhibition<br />

unlocks the dazzling beauty of<br />

this traditional art and illustrates<br />

how Brewster’s work in optics<br />

has influenced modern science<br />

and society.<br />

A farmers’ market with a scientific twist, SciMart<br />

brings together food producers, researchers and<br />

chefs to reveal the fascinating science behind<br />

some of our favourite foodstuffs. With cooking<br />

demonstrations, a series of short talks and a variety<br />

of interactive stalls, SciMart offers up a packed<br />

menu and food for thought. New for 2016: learn all<br />

about the science of chilies in Trial by Capsaicin and<br />

have a go at cheesemaking with dairy expert Paul<br />

Thomas.<br />
