BIO AND BEYOND <br />
Co-curated by the Science Festival, Summerhall and ASCUS Art & Science, Bio and Beyond brings together work from<br />
local and international artists inspired by or challenging science and technology’s potential to improve our world and<br />
how we live in it. Life is put under the microscope; encompassing everything from the deeply personal to the truly global<br />
– even cosmic.<br />

EXHIBITION<br />
Dennis & Debbie Club, Fiona Anderson, Lewis Den Hertog and Kieran Curran (aka MC TRUE FACTS) explore the<br />
utopian and dystopian possibilities of life on Earth and beyond in group exhibition The Human’s Planet Earth, while<br />
printmaker Ade Adesina comments on ecology and our ever-changing landscape inThere Will be Light. Heather<br />
Dewey-Hagborg’s Stranger Visions uses found DNA to produce 3D portraits, and Trevor Gordon & Josie Vallely present<br />
artworks on the theme of ‘living with eczema’ in Atopic Art. Artists, designers and scientists Heather Barnett, Anna<br />
Dumitriu, ecoLogicStudio, Patrick Hickey, Simon Park, Sarah Roberts and the ASCUS Lab present a Menagerie of<br />
Microbes, exploring the biological mastery of simple yet complex life forms.<br />
ASCUS Lab: Are you a scientist interested in art? An artist interested in science? Or are you interested in both fields and<br />
curious about how they intersect? ASCUS Lab is a community space for experimentation in art and science, bringing a<br />
programme of hands-on lab-based activities, talks, taster sessions and more to the Science Festival.<br />

Humans have become a force on a<br />
par with earth-shattering asteroids<br />
or planet-cloaking volcanoes and<br />
our planet is said to be crossing<br />
a geological boundary into the<br />
Anthropocene, or Age of Man.<br />
Gaia looks at how humanity’s<br />
changes are reshaping our living<br />
planet and explores how we might<br />
engineer Earth for our future.<br />

joined by Donald Gow, Senior<br />
Zoo Keeper and expert in primate<br />
play at Edinburgh Zoo, Dr Tine<br />
Bech, play researcher and artist,<br />
and Dr Amanda Seed, lecturer in<br />
psychology and neuroscience in an<br />
event hosted by Francesca Perry,<br />
social and community editor for<br />
Guardian Cities. There will also be<br />
the chance for some play!<br />

Do you remember the ZX<br />
Spectrum? Maybe you were more<br />
of a dedicated BASIC fan? Or<br />
did you see the Acorn Electron<br />
as the future? For anyone who<br />
was a kid in the 1980s, these<br />
iconic computer brands are the<br />
stuff of legend. Join historian<br />
of science Tom Lean, author of<br />
Electronic Dreams, to look back at<br />
how Britain embraced the home<br />
computer and at the people who<br />
drove the boom, and have a go on a<br />
selection of machines provided by<br />
Edinburgh Retro PC.<br />

Join us for a unique interwoven<br />
story of textiles, whisky and<br />
science. Ewan Henderson of<br />
Scotch Broth Events and textile<br />

will take you on a journey through<br />
taste and style as they experiment<br />
with the flavours and aromas that<br />
connect food, drink and fashion as<br />
they explore cask chemistry and<br />
even dissect a jacket. Sit back,<br />
relax and absorb the story as<br />
you sample whisky and canapés<br />
paired at a molecular level in this<br />
