MS Mighty Swim MS Mighty Swim hit a fantastic milestone this year as it marked its 10th year of swimming to fight MS. The event certainly drew a crowd with 381 participants joining in for the celebrations! Held on Saturday, 7 and Sunday, 8 February at the Unley Swimming Centre, the swim was a huge success, raising over $100,000. With teams competing to swim the most number of laps, the heat was on and a total of 29,361 laps were swum over the 24-hour period. Team Hectic Monkeys came up trumps for most laps swum as a team, completing an impressive 1,967 laps. The atmosphere in the air was electric as volunteers, families and friends enthusiastically cheered the teams on. Teams also had some star power to keep them going with MS Ambassador and Adelaide 36ers player Mitch Creek showing his support by jumping into the pool to swim a few laps. Channel 9 presenter and Watch Around Water Ambassador Brenton Ragless also attended, cheering participants on and chatting with them along the way. Team MS were the highest fundraising team, raising $13,000 which was a great achievement. All the money raised this year will go towards providing support to people living with MS in South Australia. For the people, by the people Fundraising plays an important role in our ability to provide care and support for our Clients. We are lucky to have the support of many people who take time out of their busy schedules to organise fundraisers of their own. The passion and enthusiasm these fundraisers have for raising the profile of MS is inspiring and their contributions have been invaluable to the MS Society. Here are some fundraisers which were held recently: The Naracoorte Auxiliary The MS Society’s Naracoorte Auxiliary consists of many members who have MS. Last spring, as they have done in previous years, the group held a Badge Day in Naracoorte. They are also planning to hold other small fundraisers throughout the year. The Ansett Down to Earth Club The Ansett Down to Earth Club is made up of ex-Ansett flight attendants who started the group when one of their colleagues was diagnosed with MS, 26 years ago. The club recently held a movie night where a portion of the funds raised were donated to the MSSANT. ACT Crowdfunding Campaign People with multiple sclerosis experience a range of symptoms that can be difficult to manage with conventional pharmaceutical treatments alone. MSSANT recently held an ACT crowdfunding campaign to raise money to enable us to offer a mindfulness program to a group of our Clients. Drawing upon extensive psychological research and best practice, this program is designed to help people living with MS to better cope with the challenges they face by re-focusing and re-setting goals. Importantly, this program will provide essential skills to help participants better manage symptoms such as chronic pain. Thanks to your generous donations, a total of $1,500 was raised which will enable approximately 30 people with MS to benefit from an introductory session. Up to 20 of these participants will then continue with the four week program. The Tailem Bend Peer Support Group The group often holds fundraisers in their local community to raise funds for MSSANT. Recently, one of the group members held a psychics’ evening where attendants enjoyed psychic readings as well as entertainment by mediums. The MSchevious Bunch Calendar Girls The MSchevious Bunch is made up of a group of women who have MS. Recently, they got together to pose for a risqué calendar in an effort to raise awareness and funds for people living with MS. Producing the calendar was a mammoth task and despite the challenges faced, the women persevered and have had their efforts rewarded. Their fundraising venture has proved very successful, selling over 500 copies and raising over $10,000 since launching in October. The women couldn’t have done it alone however and extend their thanks to the photographers, graphic designers, printers and sponsors involved in making the calendar a reality. We’d like to thank all our fundraisers for their continued support in the fight against MS. Sunday Mail Inaugural Bay-City Fun Run The Sunday Mail is switching gears and putting things in reverse with their inaugural Bay-City Fun Run! Building on the popularity of their City-Bay Fun Run, this new event will see participants running the reverse route from Glenelg to King William Road in the city in the 3km, 6km and 12km categories. The event will be held on April 19, with the City-Bay Fun Run taking place on September 20. MSSANT has participated in the Sunday Mail City-Bay Fun Run for seven years and last year raised an impressive $11,000 for people living with MS. Think you can beat last year’s record?
