NURSING Our nursing team is usually the first point of contact, after the neurologist, for anyone diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. We’re committed to providing holistic support so you have a greater understanding of what to expect from your condition. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY Occupational therapists work with Clients referred through the Disability and Community Services Program, providing assessments and recommendations for aids and equipment. PEER SUPPORT Peer support groups help people living with multiple sclerosis provide support for each other and share their experiences. There are several groups meeting across the state. Letter from the Editor Taryn Mokrzycki What a great start to the year it has been at the Multiple Sclerosis Society of SA & NT! I hope you had a nice Christmas and New Year period, and managed to keep cool during the hotter times. The first bit of exciting news to cross my desk was that we’d been successful in our crowdfunding campaign for a mindfulness program. You, and the SA public, helped us raise $1,500 so that 30 people could take part in this course. Great work everyone, and thank you! There’re also plans in the works for future courses like this, provided we can raise the funds, so please keep an eye out for them. There’s more information about this on page 19. More recently was the MS Mighty Swim, now I don’t usually like lines like this, but what a MIGHTY swim it was! More than 380 people took part and swam continuously for 24 hours. To make it even better we raised a record amount for people living with MS and had a lot of fun at the same time! A massive thank you must go to Brenton Ragless, Watch Around Water ambassador and Channel 9 newsreader, and Mitch Creek from the Adelaide 36ers for donating their time to help us out. They really have done a great job of raising the profile of the event and awareness of MSSANT. Read more on the 2015 MS Mighty Swim and check out some pics on page 18. There’s a really interesting article in this edition of the magazine about staying positive and showing selfcompassion. Like me, it might make you stop and think about how you talk to yourself. Is it positive or negative, or balanced? I recommend reading this one, it’s on page 9. As heat intolerance is such a common symptom in MS, our occupational therapists have put together some tips and tricks to help you manage the heat. Hopefully the hottest summer days are now behind us but these might also help you throughout the year. Check out page 10-11 for more information. We will be holding a Client forum in May, to coincide with World MS Day. And we have a few other exciting information sessions in the pipeline.
