SOUMYA SWAMINATHAN<br />

Tuberculosis: Challenges and Soluti<strong>on</strong>s in the 21st Century<br />

Friday, March 4, 2016 • 14:30–15:15hrs<br />

Soumya Swaminathan is a pediatrician by training, having completed her medical educati<strong>on</strong> at the Armed<br />

Forces Medical College and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences followed by a fellowship in pediatric<br />

pulm<strong>on</strong>ology at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. She has spent over 24 years at the Tuberculosis<br />

Research Centre in Chennai, (now renamed the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Institute for Research in Tuberculosis), where she<br />

is currently the Director. She has over 200 peer-reviewed publicati<strong>on</strong>s and serves <strong>on</strong> many nati<strong>on</strong>al and<br />

internati<strong>on</strong>al committees. Her major research interests are in pediatric and adult TB, their interacti<strong>on</strong> with<br />

HIV and nutriti<strong>on</strong> and the management of co-infecti<strong>on</strong>s as well as pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenetics.<br />

She is an elected Fellow of three of India’s Science Academies and chaired the HIV secti<strong>on</strong> of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Uni<strong>on</strong> against TB and Lung <strong>Diseases</strong> 2011–2013. She also served as Coordinator for Neglected Priorities Research<br />

at WHO/TDR, Geneva 2009–2011. She is the recipient of several awards for excellence in biomedical<br />

sciences. Dr. Swaminathan was appointed as Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research<br />

(ICMR) and Secretary, Department of Health Research (Ministry of Health & Family Welfare) in August 2015.<br />

She will head a network of 32 research centres under ICMR, the apex body for coordinati<strong>on</strong> and promoti<strong>on</strong><br />

of biomedical research in India.<br />

SALLY C. DAVIES<br />

Antimicrobial Resistance: From Problem to Policy to Acti<strong>on</strong><br />

Saturday, March 5, 2016 • 09:00–09:45hrs<br />

Dame Sally Davies is England’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), and the Chief Scientific Adviser for the<br />

Department of Health. As CMO she is the independent advisor to the Government <strong>on</strong> all medical matters,<br />

particularly Public Health. The CMO also advises the Health Secretary <strong>on</strong> medical matters and promoting<br />

the health and well being of the people of England. She carries the rank of Permanent Secretary and is the<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al head of the Department’s medical staff and head of the Medical Civil Service. Prof. Davies<br />

has been actively involved in NHS R&D from its establishment. As Director-General she established the<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al Institute for Health Research (NIHR) with a budget of £1 billi<strong>on</strong>. Her own research interests<br />

focused <strong>on</strong> Sickle Cell disease.<br />

L<strong>on</strong>g an active participant in WHO, Prof. Davies led the UK delegati<strong>on</strong> to the Ministerial Summit in November<br />

2004 and the Forum <strong>on</strong> Health Research in November 2008. She spoke <strong>on</strong> R&D at the World<br />

Health Assembly in May 2005 and serves the WHO Global Advisory Committee <strong>on</strong> Health Research.<br />

She also chaired the Expert Advisory Committee for the development of the WHO research strategy. She<br />

is a member of the <str<strong>on</strong>g>Internati<strong>on</strong>al</str<strong>on</strong>g> Advisory Committee for A*STAR, Singapore and has advised many other<br />

organizati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> research strategy and evaluati<strong>on</strong>. Prof. Davies was awarded a DBE (Dame Commander<br />

of the British Empire) in the New Year H<strong>on</strong>ours 2009 for services to medicine. In September 2011 she was<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ferred as Emeritus Professor at Imperial College L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>.<br />

PAUL ANANTHARAJAH TAMBYAH<br />

Zika, MERS, Ebola, SARS and H1N1: Local and Global Resp<strong>on</strong>ses to Viral Threats<br />

Paul Anantharajah Tambyah is currently Professor of Medicine at the Nati<strong>on</strong>al University of Singapore and<br />

Senior C<strong>on</strong>sultant <strong>Infectious</strong> <strong>Diseases</strong> Physician at the Nati<strong>on</strong>al University Hospital. He is also Research<br />

Director in the Divisi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>Infectious</strong> <strong>Diseases</strong> of the Nati<strong>on</strong>al University Health System. After graduating<br />

from the Nati<strong>on</strong>al University of Singapore, he did his postgraduate training at the University of Wisc<strong>on</strong>sin<br />

under Dr. Dennis Maki and since returning to Singapore in 1999 he has held a number of academic,<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>al and advisory appointments including Assistant Dean of the Y<strong>on</strong>g Loo Lin School of Medicine.<br />

He is immediate past President of the Society of <strong>Infectious</strong> <strong>Diseases</strong> (Singapore) and Secretary-General of<br />

the Asia Pacific Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infecti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
