TAS Tasmania Branch Report Dr Alistair Reed Chairman Institute News Dear all, New Year’s Greetings from the AIGs newest branch. It was a busy final quarter to 2015. With the end of year fast approaching, an initial group of members met, subsequently formed a committee and over the next two months, outlined out what we hope will be the starting Dr Robert Findlay, Ben Jones, Shelley Greener, Dr Alistair Reed. point of a dynamic and productive state branch. The Tasmanian branch of the AIG aims to be a voice for members working or living in Tasmania. The committee are only too aware that residing in Tasmania is often seen as a hindrance by perspective employers. We will aim to try and reduce this view and to encourage more companies and persons to look at Tasmania (and its geologists) to see the opportunities and benefits that they have. In line with this aim, one of the larger items of committee business has been the establishment of a timely and appropriate social calendar, suitable and reachable for our members. This would not only include a chance for members to catch up and network but also raise any issues. In time, the committee also plan to include Tasmanian hosted geoscience conferences and importantly, training and education opportunities for Tasmanian based geologists within the state, when and where the opportunities can be found. With this in mind and the 2016 year rapidly gaining pace, to kick-off the social calendar the committee warmly invite all of its Tasmanian members (and anyone else who might be interested) to attend the first of our events, the March ‘Geo Pub’ at the Shipwright Arms in Battery Point, Hobart on Thursday March 3rd from 5pm. Geo Pub is an informal atmosphere, where members can take a break, enjoy a beer and perhaps a spin a story or two. If you can’t make this one, Geo Pub will be held on the first Thursday of every month at the same time and venue. The committee are very keen to meet our members and importantly hear their views and gain their support. All events will be advertised on the AIG state branch Tasmanian webpage and you can contact the committee by emailing tas@aig.org.au. EDU Education Report Kaylene Camuti Chair, AIG Education Committee This year’s AIG Student Bursary Program is underway and application forms will be distributed to students and universities in a few weeks. This year we will again be offering bursaries to third year, honours and postgraduate geoscience students enrolled at Australian universities. A reminder that this year, as in previous years, the AIG is offering bursaries to students working in all geoscience field, and is also offering a number of sponsored bursaries to students working in specific fields of geoscience or geological terrains, or enrolled at specific universities. These bursaries on offer include: • The AIG Third Year, Honours and Postgraduate Bursaries: offered to geoscience students working in all fields of geoscience (sponsored by the AIG State Branches and Federal Council). • The Macquarie Arc Conference-GSNSW – AIG Bursary: offered to geoscience students working on mapping-based honours projects in the Lachlan Orogen, in or around the Macquarie Arc. • The SMEDG – AIG Bursaries: offered to NSW geoscience students working on projects related to mineral exploration. • The Davis – AIG Bursaries: offered to geoscience students enrolled at JCU or UWA to assist with costs associated with field work. If you know any current geoscience students eligible for a bursary, please let them know about the AIG Bursary Program and encourage them to apply for a 2016 bursary.
