PATHWAY TO PROFESSIONAL GAME BEGINS FOR TALENTED YOUNG PLAYERS THE ROAD TO THE ALL GOLDS FIRST TEAM AND BEYOND HAS BEGUN FOR NEARLY 80 GLOUCESTERSHIRE YOUNGSTERS WHO ATTENDED THE CLUB’S FIRST EVER PLAYER DEVELOPMENT DAYS HOSTED AT THE UNIVERSITY’S OXSTALLS CAMPUS LAST WEEK. 18 These events were the first of three opportunities this year that the All Golds will be running as part of the RFL’s “Embed the Pathway” programme. This Programme aims to provide a clear and consistent route for all young players from schools’ Rugby League through to the full England team via the sport’s professional clubs. The two days, with Year 7 and 8 players being hosted on 22nd March and Years 9-11 visiting on the 24th, had player education elements alongside athletic testing and on-field technical sessions. The athletic testing elements were run by Dr Jonathan Hughes, head of the University’s strength and conditioning MSc course, supported by undergraduate and post graduate students from the university. The data collected on each player will not only serve to provide information on development within the club’s pathway but will also form part of a wider study by one of the game’s great organisations, Brisbane Broncos. The NRL giants are in the process of working on their own talent identification programme and have linked with the university to develop this. Players underwent a number of tests and measurements and will be retested in July, as well as in subsequent years, to see their progression. In terms of player education, both www.allgoldsrugby.com
groups looked at player profiling, with advice on how they could each assess and develop their own performance, with the University’s Mark Jeffreys and Anthony Atherton delivering across the two days. The older group also had the opportunity to have a seminar on nutrition, run by Dr Matt Cole, which looked at what foods are needed by elite athletes to fuel their bodies. On the field, the players were coached by members of the All Golds’ community coaching team in a number of areas including play the ball, decision-making and tackle technique. Initially taking part in a rotation of three activities, the coaches also used the technical sessions to embed mental skills such as “coping with contact” and “being honest about my performance” within the drills. Finishing the day with a rotation of three modified games, the players were able to put their skills to the test and implement some of what they’d learned. Reflecting on the success of the two events Talent Pathway Manager for the All Golds, Dan Garbutt, was keen to stress the importance of everyone’s input in the delivery of the days: “It’s events like this that show just how uniquely beneficial it is for the club to be owned and operated by a University and the support we’ve had from a number of academic departments, as well as staff from across the institution, has been amazing. “The resource we have available to us in terms of facilities, equipment and, most of all, people is what sets us apart.” Connor Thompson, Head of Rugby at Archway School, one of the five schools who brought players along, was keen to praise the event saying: “It was a fantastic day for the boys who got a great all round experience of what Rugby League is all about. The organisation and events put on were all excellent, with the manner of the coaches being superb” Nick Dill, of St Peter’s High School was equally supportive: “The boys learnt a great deal and enjoyed the sessions. From a school point of view the day was a good opportunity for CPD and ideas-sharing. As a teacher I wish we could have brought more of our players.” The All Golds will host its next player development day, open to all players as well as those who attended the initial days, on Sunday 22nd May at the Prince of Wales Stadium in Cheltenham. The event will take place prior to the first team’s game against Hunslet Hawks and will start at 10.30am.
