THE PUBLICATION OF STATISTICS FROM THE CENTRAL
BUREAU OF STATISTICS
The results of the Central Bureau of Statistics'
(CBS) statistics and analytical activities are
published in both printed and electronic form.
Publication series
The publications are issued in the following
series: Norway's Official Statistics (NOS), Social
and Economic Studies (SES) and Reports from
the Central Bureau of Statistics (RAPP). In
addition, there are weekly and monthly bulletins,
and periodicals published several times each
year, as well as certain special series.
Each year the NOS series covers approximately
50 publications containing detailed statistics on
most of the topics listed in the Statistical Yearbook.
References to NOS publications are
located under the individual tables in the Yearbook.
Most NOS publications are issued with
new statistics once a year, although some are
published more frequently and others less frequently.
Statistics compiled each month or quarter are
published in the Weekly Bulletin of Statistics, the
Monthly Bulletin of Statistics, the Monthly Bulletin
of External Trade and/or Bank and Credit Statistics.
The SES series contains the results of analyses
and research projects mainly related to the
environment, social conditions and economics.
The RAPP series contains analyses of statistics
on a wide variety of topics, results from various
surveys, or discussions of models and methods
used in CBS' analytical and research activities.
Articles on people's living conditions and lifestyles
are published in the Social Mirror
("Samfunnsspeilet"), published three times a year
in Norwegian only.
Current economic figures, economic surveys
covering Norway and other countries, and
quarterly national accounts statistics are
published in the series Economic Analyses,
released nine times a year in Norwegian and four
times a year in English.
The series Standards for Norwegian Statistics
contains most of the standards used in the
production of statistics, e.g. standards for industrial
categorisation, socio-economic status,
regional divisions and the budgetary nomenclature
for the national accounts statistics.
Electronic distribution
SSB-DATA offers the rapid dissemination of
statistics and other information from CBS on-line.
SSB-DATA offers databases containing updated
information on most topics. The dataoases are
also used to produce diskettes or paper tables,
whichever the user prefers, and for the production
of publications.
SSB-DATA contains:
General information for users, and a survey of
what will be published in the near future.
Press releases in which new statistics are
presented on the same day as they are made
public. Searches may be made chronologically
or by topic.
Sources of statistics (SSB-DOK), a survey
covering published Norwegian statistical surveys
that may be searched for running text, which
refers to the publications and will eventually also
indicate the location of the statistics in the
databases.
Key national figures, the most recent figures on
development trends in population, economics,
industnal production and trade.
Table files containing more detailed statistics on
Norway's economy and industry, population and
communications, etc., as well as some key
figures from other countries. The tables are
arranged by topic. Depending on the subject in
question, tables can be made/ordered by region,
month or quarter.
Using SSB-DATA requires the following:
- That the user signs an agreement
with CBS
- That the user is linked to CBS
through the NIT network. Both
mainframes and PCs can be used,
but PCs have to be capable of
mainframe emulation.
