purpose driven talent development
Street kids are survivors.
They have to be.
Just think about what you can learn from their skills.
It will change your market view, your reaction to chaotic uncertainty,
your teamwork and your message to the world.
It will open up a realm of new creative possibilities.
Do you recognise yourself?
Our (modern) world is ever more about uncertainty and ambiguity; many of the
forces driving change are beyond your control.
As your organisation faces rising customer expectations and market disruption, your
teams have to creatively engage in emerging opportunities for growth. Addressing
these outside pressures while reinventing inside behaviour is not easy.
Does difficult mean impossible? Of course not! It is possible to flex and adapt yourself
and your organisation. What it takes is to unlearn the old and learn the better. Go
for the basics. Focus on skills that make you and your organisation more fit at
navigating today’s uncertain, ambiguous and ever-changing world.
You and your people just have to become more StreetwiZe.
* Mobile School develops educational tools designed to empower and improve the
self-esteem of street children. StreetwiZe invests 100% of its profits in the continuous
development of its Mobile School Programs and co-creates street proof educational
material. Our overall aim is to make ‘Mobile School’ as self-sustainable and
independent from public funding as possible. In 2015 we achieved a self–sufficiency
rate of 88 %.
Street kids are an inspiration
info@mobileschool.org
www.mobileschool.org
No environment is more uncertain and hostile than the rugged streets these children
make a living on.
We, the people from StreetwiZe and Mobile School, have come to know many extraordinary
boys and girls who make the impossible possible, despite the challenging
context they live in. We deploy Mobile School* teams in more than 20 countries on
four continents. We have done so for many years now. We work with many thousands
street youngsters, on an annual basis.
During all those years, the boys and girls from the street have consistently inspired
us with their tremendous stories and deep experiences. Close examination of all
these stories offered us fundamental insights. The boys and girls standing out successfully
on the street all share very distinguished and specific skills. We call them
street skills.
3 4
The four street skills (for a win on all fronts)
In order to flourish in the new normal, we at StreetwiZe believe four skills have become
indispensable.
Street children rely on these skills for their daily survival struggle. Their stories and
experiences have inspired us to design our street skills model.
The first skill is positive focus, the ability to detect and grasp these opportunities
whenever and wherever they arise. And this even in troubled times. Positive focus
is also referred to as the choice for change. A positive focus enables you to translate
problems into opportunities.
The second skill, agility and resilience, determines your ability to overcome problems.
Our agility makes us act and respond quickly and effectively. Our resilience
helps us to anticipate challenges and quickly recover from failure.
Our street skills model is the backbone of all we do. Our complete offering for talent
and leadership development and all of our interventions revolve around a backbone
of four street skills.
Your people and organisation must excel at integrating the fundamentals. Doing so
will strengthen your backbone in order to successfully overcome new challenges and
meet novel expectations, now and in the future.
The third skill is proactive creativity. Creative wins are always based on authenticity
and new thinking. Proactive creativity is about the ability to unlearn and break patterns
and habits.
The fourth skill is cooperative competition. The new normal is about forging new alliances.
Therefore we have to know when to cooperate and when to compete, and ...
when to stop doing that.
5 6
Four Street Techniques
The first technique deals with making ‘the’ connection. As a successful (self)leader
you need to connect with people, inspire them. Get people to internalise the DNA of
the projects and latch onto the goals you want to achieve.
The second technique is about leading change. Change is not about a one shot project
or a temporary conversion. It is an on-going process that requires leading effort.
Leading change is about mastering the critical rational, emotional and behavioural
factors of lasting change.
With the third technique, you learn how to pitch your ideas. Selling ideas is all about
short and powerfull communication. It is about mobilising people to get things done.
A fresh and pragmatic view on persuasion will help you to successfully increase your
impact.
Besides the four street skills we identified four street techniques.
We offer you half-day hands-on workshops where you learn to master the techniques
that will make you get the results you want: how to connect, how to lead change, how
to tell stories and how to pitch your ideas. Mastering these techniques has become
quintessential in todays new normal environment.
The fourth technique is about storytelling. With todays information overload, standing
out necessitates an appealing and convincing story. Storytelling is a technique
that is of paramount value for all companies.
By learning how to connect, how to lead change, how to tell stories and how to pitch
your ideas, you eventually learn to get the results you want.
7 8
How we do it together
What we are good at
We believe that those organisations who foster positive focus, agility and resilience,
cooperative competition and proactive creativity will be positioned on an accelerated
path to sustained growth.
We walk the talk: every single StreetwiZe trainer commits to his or her work with
street children and his or her business experience.
We are authentic: we’re using every single street skill ourselves, in the way we work
as an organisation and in the way we make Mobile School and StreetwiZe sustainable.
We are empathic: being empathic and able to fit in any environment is one of our
key strengths, thanks to our experiences on the streets, with NGO’s and businesses
worldwide.
We are no nonsense: in everything we do we focus on how to make the street skills
and techniques work for you, your team and your organisation.
We are rock and roll: we take ourselves not too seriously, because we believe learning
has to be fun.
Over its 20 + years Mobile School experience, StreetwiZe has developed unique learning
tools and development processes. The kind of process we will offer you depends
on your answer to the following questions.
Do you want to make your organisation StreetwiZe?
Do you want to create a StreetwiZe team?
Do you want to make a group of individuals StreetwiZe?
But before we let you discover our learning and development scenario’s, there is just
one more thing. The contents of the process are always tailored to your own ‘needs,
wants and challenges’ as an organisation, a team or leader.
Now, we invite you to take a peek on the following pages.
INTAKE PHASE
We jump into your world. We get to know your organisation inside out, its reality, business
culture, aspirations and challenges. Depending on the level that we are asked
to address in your organisation, we do this by a preparatory meeting or a few days
running along.
EXPERIENCE PHASE
We take you out of the comfort zone and into our StreetwiZe world. We can bring you
to the street or share our experience of the street via a keynote or a StreetwiZe story.
By doing so, we start learning by experience or create the necessary buy-in and
openness.
ALIGNMENT PHASE
A strong shared and living mission, vision and strategy is a prerequisite for starting
up the learning process. Via a hands-on session we define topics, priorities and our
subsequent approach. We also determine the needed skills and techniques. This way
we co-create the StreetwiZe interventions from within your organisation.
INVOLVEMENT PHASE
A prerequisite for success is the involvement of middle management. In this phase,
we prepare executives for an inspiring translation of the StreetwiZe approach to their
middle managers. In a half-day or full day session we use the street skill Storytelling
to help you make your message and your story inspiring, authentic and impactful.
By doing so, your senior management team is able to convince and involve the entire
middle layer, necessary to have a successful implementation of the program.
ORGANISATION-WIDE ACTION PHASE
By means of targeted actions, we ensure impact throughout your organisation. We
roll out inspiring and action-oriented workshops with leadership teams, functional
teams, middle management, junior management, employee teams or every other
team you would like to immerse.
ANCHORING PHASE
Through repetition and follow-up sessions we ensure the anchoring of the StreetwiZe
skills and techniques in your organisation.
team or individual needs. You can broaden the scope or ask us to leave out
needs.
It even does not have to stop there. Once you have regained your full street potential,
we would be very pleased to be of further assistance while you reinvent your organisation.
We love to help you with the implementation of change programs. Our aspiration
is to consistently exceed your expectations. And by becoming inspiring partners,
we keep on learning from each other.
keynote by arnoud raskin
streetwize story
The stories of street children and their unique inspiration, told by Arnoud Raskin,
founder of Mobile School and StreetwiZe. In his keynote, Arnoud explains how 20
years of working with street children got him hooked on the possibilities to create a
positive impact.
A transforming world is by many considered to be a breakneck threat. However, by
adopting street skills the change we observe will give rise to new opportunities. The
new laws of the land are positive focus, agility & resilience, cooperative competition
and proactive creativity. During this keynote, Arnoud dives into these street skills
and explains how you can make them your own.
The keynote includes great video footage and real-life stories from the street. Participants
will be energised and inspired with new ideas on how to reinvent their corporate
culture and create socially responsible value and impact.
Arnoud Raskin is an internationally recognised social entrepreneur and an Ashoka
Global Fellow. He lectures at various international conferences, sharing his experience
and insights on leadership transformation and conscious business models. Arnoud
Raskin is also author of ‘StreetwiZe, what managers can learn from street kids’,
a book about the future of business and social impact and the continuing journey of
Mobile School and StreetwiZe.
The acronym VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. You
cannot read a contemporary management book or this from military vocabulary derived
word pops up, indicating that our modern economical world is more about chaos
than ever.
We at StreetwiZe do believe that in order to deal with this chaotic environment you
need four ‘street skills’, inspired by the strength of street children who do live in a
chaotic environment.
The first is positive focus, the ability to detect and grasp opportunities. Agility and
resilience is the second set of street skills and elaborates on our capabilities to deal
with difficulties. As a third skill, we deducted pro-active creativity as a prerequisite
for success. And last but not least we expand our street skills model with cooperative
competition or the ability to cooperate in group balancing between personal and
group needs.
The StreetwiZe Story is a 70-minute inspirational talk illustrating the importance of
the street skills and triggering some ideas on how to use these in your personal and
professional life.
*Our co-creation process:
After developing a prototype during our expeditions, this prototype is passed on to
the R&D-department of Mobile School. A team of street educators, volunteers and
content experts take up the idea and let it float, providing feedback. When the core
idea is well received, the prototype is being adjusted and ideas are combined, subsequently
different versions are created and looped again for feedback. This results in
a final version that goes into production. The games, co-created by StreetwiZe clients
are sent to all Mobile School projects and impact street kids worldwide.
streetWIZE workshops
StreetwiZe Workshops are of the highly interactive kind; a learning experience where
you get to discover how to combine skills and lessons from the street in order to tackle
your challenges. Every workshop is strictly tailored to your mindset and needs.
StreetwiZe Workshops are available for both the leadership and employee levels, and
for existing teams or ad hoc groups of individuals.
Our workshops are always modelled to fit your purpose. For example: a ‘workshop
positive focus for leaders or a leadership team’ is aimed at sustaining the positive
focus within the team, whilst a ‘workshop positive focus for employees’ addresses
the question of how to remain positively focused as an individual.
STREET SKILLS
WORKSHOP POSITIVE FOCUS
Today’s reality often generates high levels of negative stress and pressure; those can
adversely affect productivity, personal happiness and foster absenteeism. In order
to sustain personal and professional development, managers and employees must
retain a positive focus and outlook. During this workshop, you learn to translate problems
into sources of opportunities, distinguish between your likes and needs and
express your needs explicitly.
WORKSHOP AGILITY & RESILIENCE
Every now and then, the unexpected catches you off-guard. In troubled times, an essential
survival skill is to flex the problem and find a positive way out. Agility and
resilience have become more important than ever. This workshop focuses on the
use of rational thinking and self-reflection. You immerse yourself in new experiences,
ones that will increase your mental agility. You will define your own mission in life and
work. And you learn to value things, even those you didn’t know you liked.
WORKSHOP PROACTIVE CREATIVITY
When confronted with unexpected challenges, routines and a careers’ expertise do
not always help to formulate the right answer. Still, the solution is all in the mind.
You will need to break problem-solving patterns and embrace the power of small-creativity,
open up a novel mindset. In this workshop, you will practice the concept of
unlearning and the balance between expertise and creativity.
WORKSHOP COOPERATIVE COMPETITION
A good idea never becomes a success just because it is great ... all on its own. The
same goes for a good team or a good leader. Success is built on perseverance in execution
and hard work. It takes a lot of effort, which is why you better choose your
battles wisely. Participants in this workshop will strengthen both their cooperation
and competition skills and learn what it requires to achieve collective or individual
success.
23 24
STREET TECHNIQUES
WORKSHOP CONNECT
The need for connection is everywhere. Between people, organisations, ideas ...
Stronger and more meaningful connections are value enhancing to your business
and to its network. This workshop will help you get familiar with the importance of
connecting with people and how to connect yourself. You will be offered practical
tools to successfully implement your role as a connector into your daily practice.
WORKSHOP LEADING CHANGE
Inspired by the story of Mobile School, we take you on a journey to successfully implement
change in your organisation. Many change programs fail though. The challenge
is to avoid traditional pitfalls. In this workshop, we focus on the three key factors of
lasting change: ratio, emotions and behaviour.
WORKSHOP STORYTELLING
After years of ‘PowerPoint poisoning’, companies have started to adopt storytelling
as an alternative way to communicate messages. In this workshop, you will learn to
structure an appealing and convincing story. And at the same time, the accompanying
reflection process will help you to sharpen and position your project.
WORKSHOP PITCHING
As you are all aware, a good idea does not automatically sell itself. In many cases, an
idea will not be – really – judged on its merits. The complex web of emotions it triggers
in your audience will rather contribute to formulate its judgement. Acceptance decisions
are made way less rationally than you might think. A fresh and pragmatic view
on how persuasion works can help you increase your impact when selling new ideas.
This workshop offers you the possibility to develop your pitching techniques.
coaching & intervision
Next, it is essential to select the actions that will be carried out. We also examine the
best execution order for these actions. During this step we strengthen the ability of
the coachee or team to make effective decisions by focusing on formulating objectives,
generating alternatives, prioritisation and evaluation.
Once acquainted with the real world use of street skills in today’s reality, you might
choose to develop them further to fully root them in your organisation’s culture or
your team’s behavioural pattern.
StreetwiZe has a team of internationally experienced coaches, ready to help you and
your people in developing their personal leadership skills, team skills and change
management skills.
All of our coaches combine a seasoned business background with profound coaching
skills. Their development approach relies on our Street Skills Model. Their sole aim is
to dramatically raise the self-reliance of the individual or the group.
STREETWIZE COACHING
The core idea behind our StreetwiZe Coaching is the development of and guidance
towards self-efficacy, an approach that mirrors our work with street children at the
mobile schools. More specifically, we focus on three steps that are instrumental to
successful change management: quality of judgment, decision-making and implementation.
We assist individuals and teams in the development of the necessary
skills to successfully complete these steps. In order to achieve this we target results
and focus on fostering autonomy.
First and foremost, we aim to develop skills that allow us to assess what is going on.
Together with the coachee, or with a team, we define the real change demand and
investigate practical ways to resolve the identified change challenge(s). Elements to
be explored and developed here include alertness, reasoning, motivation, root cause
analysis and query definition.
Finally, we work on the sustained implementation of the decisions. During this final
phase, we discuss elements such as actions or rituals, future-oriented anticipation,
preventive measures and feedback systems.
During each of these steps, the StreetwiZe coach will always make sure that the acquired
knowledge and skills become an integral part of the work process of the coachee
or coached team. The ultimate goal of StreetwiZe and Mobile School coaches is
always to increase the autonomous self of an individual or a group.
STREETWIZE INTERVISION
The goal of StreetwiZe Intervision is to facilitate professional development inside your
organisation. Our approach is similar to our intervision work with our own peer Mobile
School partners. Unlike our coaching approach, we will not guide you towards solutions,
but we extend our methods so that the organisation’s expertise will be fully
utilised and further developed. Using shared analytical and problem-solving skills,
participants gain insight into inserted challenges and how to deal with them in the
future.
A StreetwiZe intervision process consists of an initial meeting, followed by another
five to eight sessions. The primary aim of StreetwiZe intervision is to promote the
autonomy of participants and increase their problem solving skills. Hence we bet
strongly on a phased approach, all the way from effective questioning (1), individual
associations (2), exploration (3), deepening (4), expansion (5), selection (6) to
evaluation (7).
At the end of our journey participants are also able to independently proceed with
intervision, without an external intervision coach.
our commitment?
Our need-based approach is our way to prosper. But we never compromise on our
StreetwiZe-commitment and values.
PURPOSE DRIVEN
Purpose is at the core of who we are. It represents the core of our work. Purpose creates
drive, energy and action. We work to improve the lives of street kids around the
world. By investing in your team and developing a StreetwiZe culture for your organisation,
you generate social value both internally and externally.
EVIDENCE-BASED
Don’t only take our word for it. Our street experience is the foundation of our work. But
we can substantiate our insights with academic research from leading universities
and solid business experiences. The StreetwiZe methodology is based on purpose
driven experiential learning with an evidence-based backbone.
IMPACTFUL
There is no denying: real life experiences generate a much bigger impact on the development
of leadership than traditional training approaches. Purpose-driven, experiential
learning is exactly what we offer. The impact on your team will be noticeable,
powerful and will move everyone in the right direction.
AUTHENTIC
We do not just talk about the street, we bring the streets to you. You will live the street
through real life physical interaction in our experience-based programs or through
