Aston Lamb reviews and celebrates the past 20 years of Pokémon
GAME FREAK’s hugely successful title, Pokémon, burst on to the scene in Japan in 1996 with the
games ‘Pokémon Red’ and ‘Pokémon Green’. After 20 years and 6 generations of main games
spreading on to 5 different consoles, Pokémon has finally reached the age of 20.
Pokémon has become one of Nintendo’s biggest published series of games, alongside other series’
such as ‘Super Mario Bros.’ and ‘The Legend Of Zelda’. Pokémon has become known to the entire
world over the past 20 years, and to commemorate it, here is a chronological timeline of each
game, and a review of each game (excluding remakes and spin-offs).
Pokémon Diamond/Pearl 2006 - 2010
The game begins by showing a news report of
a red Gyarados being found in a lake, so you
and your friend go looking for it. However,
wild Starly begin to attack you, and Proffesor
Rowan had left his bag with the three starter
pokémon by the lake, leaving you no choice
but to use them. You also have to stop Team
Galactic from creating a new universe.
You start in your bedroom, you are woken up
by a Fletchling. After this, you get dressed and
visit your friends in Aquacorde town. Here,
your friends give you the chance to pick your
starter, and a your nickname. One rival takes
the starter with type advantage, and one picks
the starter with a disadvantage. From here,
you travel through Kalos, stopping Team Flare
in your way, as they want to destroy Earth by
blowing it up, to create a new one where only
Team Flare exists. It’s as rediculous as it sounds.
Review
This game is okay, but doesn’t stand up to its
predecessor. The game inplements some nice
features, such as 3D models, using the new
capabilities of the Nintendo DS. Also, the story
line is interesting and gripping as the game
does get quite tense towards the end.
Score 8/10
Pokémon Black/White - 2010 - 2012
This game takes you through the Unova region
where you are gifted your starter Pokémon
from Professor Juniper, you have 2 rivals,
Bianca and Cheren and together, you go on a
journey to stop Team Plasma, who are against
the “liberation of Pokémon”. The character
‘N’ is part of ‘Team Plasma’ realises that what
they’re doing is wrong.
Pokémon X/Y - 2013 - Present
Review
This game was a bit disappointing, the story
got a bit repetitive as Team Plasma appeared
every second for the same reason, some
Pokémon lacked creativity and the game
lacked new features. It showed signs of the
Pokémon franchise possibly turning stale.
Score - 5/10
Review
‘X/Y’ was a refreshment to the franchise,
introducing the first 3D Pokémon game
made entirely of 3D sprites. Also, Mega
Evolution was introduced creating a
great new way to play Pokémon. This
game is captivating, and is made even
better by the 3D capabilties of the 3DS.
This game took care of speculations
that the franchise was stale.
Score - 10/10
