A NOTE ON THE PRONUNCIATION OF THE SANSKRIT ALPHABET The Sanskrit alphabet is phonetical: all vowels and consonants are pronounced clearly and always in the same way. Vowels: a ā i ī u ū e o ai au short like ‘u’ in ‘luck’ long like ‘a’ in ‘grass’ short like ‘i’ in ‘sit’ long like ‘ee’ in ‘sweet’ short like ‘u’ in ‘bull’ long like ‘oo’ in ‘food’ as a hard rolling syllable-producing vowel ‘rr’ (perhaps the only living IE language which has preserved this vowel is Czech, e.g. in ‘brk’; the new Indian pronunciation is ‘ri’ as in ‘river’ and this has also been adopted in English pronunciation and spelling of some words, e.g. ‘Sanskrit’) long like ‘ai’ in ‘fair’ long like ‘au’ in ‘cause’ like ‘i’ in ‘mine’, i.e. as a diphthong like ‘ou’ in ‘house’, i.e. as a diphthong Consonants: k kh g gh c ch j jh like ‘c’ in ‘comma’ like ‘k-h’ in ‘cook-house’ like ‘g’ in ‘giggle’ like ‘g-h’ in ‘log-house’ like ‘ng’ in ‘thing’ like ‘ch’ in ‘chalk’ like ‘ch-h’ in ‘church-house’ like ‘j’ in ‘jam’ like ‘dgeh’ in ‘Edgehill’ like ‘gn’ in Italian ‘signor’
