4 A BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF THE AIMST UNIVERSITY “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela The AIMST University (AIMST) is the first private university in northern Peninsular Malaysia. University is registered with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Malaysia as a tertiary educational institute under Sections 38 and 39 of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act of 1996. AIMST University formally began its operations on 30 October 2001, coinciding with its registration with the Department of Private Education under the Ministry of Higher Education. In-line with the vision of founder, the AIMST University aims to be a premier private university in the country and region catering to the needs of needy local and international students in providing quality technical education at an affordable fee. The curricula for all the programmes offered are in-line with the international standards. Each degree programme covers all relevant components to make students competent enough to serve the industry in their respective domains. In general, most of the degree programmes include computer training, writing and a research component in order to prepare students for work and to provide them with the ability to apply technologies to all aspects of their education and learning. Admission to degree programmes requires the applicant to meet the minimum required grades and or qualification in the relevant subjects or other equivalent qualifications acceptable to the AIMST University. The medium of instruction for all courses is English, although the importance of the National Language is emphasized in appropriate activities of the University. It appears that university is committed and determined not only to providing education that is globally competitive but also relevant to the needs of industry and the challenges of Malaysia, region and beyond. In line with the national education philosophy of Malaysia, AIMST University is putting-in its full efforts in developing the full-potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically balanced and harmonious. This book is an attempt to highlight the exclusive infrastructure, teaching and research facilities,and the natural beauty of the AIMST University to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the university.
