Enclosures Discussion The type of enclosures captive Kea are held, will affect the message conveyed and education of the zoo visitor. The most popular enclosures with the visitor are naturalistic, and these types have been shown to impact on the level of education, and on the conservation message. The Kea Captive Management Plan (Pullar 1996 pg 7) states, “Institutions must be required to display Kea in surrounding and with signs that convey effective conservation messages to the public”. The majority of public holders in New Zealand use standard bird aviaries to present Kea to the public, standard bird aviaries are practical and cost effective, but it may be more difficult to provide a naturalistic type exhibit that would reflect Kea habitat or a stimulating environment for the birds. Naturalism is not the only way to produce good education and advocacy opportunities, the introduction of enrichment can provide an opportunity for the birds show normal behaviour patterns. Only one holder had an exhibit specifically designed for Kea. One third of the holders held the birds in a public walk-through aviary, this would allow the visitors to become immersed in the exhibit and thus allow a connection for visitors as stated by Coe (1996) with the bird and the habitat. One third of the population are held in enclosures not originally designed for birds, while this is not ideal, the level of changes made to these enclosures will influence the finished result. The highest frequency for visitors disliking the enclosure was given as being too small, this may reflect the types of enclosures visitors viewed. 39
