1918 April: The <strong>Boeing</strong> Airplane Co. starts delivering the Model C trainers to the Navy. The last will be delivered in November.<br />

William <strong>Boeing</strong> calls company vice president Edgar Gott from San Diego, Calif., and tells him to get the factory ready<br />
to build the HS-2L, a Curtiss-designed patrol flying boat.<br />
The <strong>Boeing</strong> Airplane Co. signs a contract with the Navy for $116,000 to build 50 HS-2Ls.<br />
The Martin MB-1 bomber, designed by Donald Douglas working with Martin factory manager Larry Bell and chief<br />
draftsman Dutch Kindelberger, makes its first flight. It is the first U.S.-designed and -built bomber to enter production.<br />
World War I ends, and the <strong>Boeing</strong> Airplane Co.’s HS-2L contract is cut in half.<br />
1919 Jan. 25: <strong>Boeing</strong> Airplane Co. pilot George Bolt sets a New Zealand altitude record of 6,500 feet flying the <strong>Boeing</strong> B & W.<br />
Three months later, Bolt will set a one-day distance record in the same seaplane, flying 306 miles in 4 hours,<br />
39 minutes.<br />
Feb. 15:<br />
The <strong>Boeing</strong> Airplane Co. appoints George Pocock foreman of experimental construction in the pontoon department.<br />
Pocock later becomes famous for the racing shells he builds for the University of Washington.<br />
March 3: William <strong>Boeing</strong> and pilot Eddie Hubbard fly 60 letters from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Seattle in <strong>Boeing</strong>’s C-700<br />
as part of the Canadian Exposition. This is the first international airmail to reach the United States.<br />
November:<br />
Dec. 27:<br />
The <strong>Boeing</strong> Airplane Co. starts modernizing 50 de Havilland DH-4 fighters by moving the fuel tank to lower the<br />
risk of fire. Between 1919 and 1924, <strong>Boeing</strong> rebuilds 298 de Havillands.<br />
The <strong>Boeing</strong> Airplane Co. B-1 mail plane, the first <strong>Boeing</strong>-designed commercial aircraft, makes its first flight.<br />
