FEATURE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELS New Labels for Consumers In March 2016 the Federal Government announced that there will be significant reforms to Australia’s Food labelling for all food available for retail sale in Australia. After many years of consumer complaints, lobbying by consumer groups and Media including Buy Australian magazine the government has conceded that the current system needed overhauling and a new Country of Origin labelling system was needed. This is a major win for consumers, the old labelling system was confusing at best. The new Country of Origin Labelling will show consumers where the product is made, packaged and grown at a glance, giving consumers the ability to make more informed choices. You can expect to see new Country of Origin labels as early as July 1 2016, business do have two years to sell existing stock so it won’t be in full effect until mid 2018. The Country of Origin Labelling has been created using a series of bar charts designed to be consistent, easily recognisable, and most importantly, easy to understand. Let’s have a look and see what you can expect to see on your supermarket shelves. PRIORITY FOODS All food available for retail sale with the exception of Non priority foods. (See next page for Non priority foods) The proposed country of origin labels for priority food grown and produced in Australia will identify two key things: 1. That the food was grown, produced or made in Australia – indicated by the kangaroo logo 2. The phrase stating that the food was grown, produced or made in Australia. Below, for products that are not 100% grown and produced in Australia the bar chart shows the percentage of Australian ingredients in the food by ingoing weight and is stated in the phrase. see next page for more label examples PAGE 11
