Virtual Reality By Emma Casavant Virtual reality over the years has started to evolve during the years without us even knowing. Now day’s space and technology has been a great mix to create new technology that could change space exploration one day. Recently virtual reality and Mars have been under development so it would be possible to train astronauts, maneuver the Mars rover and also support the long journeys on Mars. Since the mid-1980’s NASA had started early to work on virtual-reality goggles. In this research technology has been playing an important role in training and guiding astronauts. According to Dugan, who earlier presented a hybrid reality system where people on ground could interact with real life environments, astronauts could later have the ability to use real tools to practice repair work on the space station. By combining technology and space together, astronauts could practice taking measurements on Mars in their spacesuit by this summer, which could be a great evolution considering the fact that the gravity doesn’t always help with accuracy and the environment. A new program called “OnSight” is a 3D software tool that would allow researchers on Mars to look at photographic data from Curiosity in 3D and plan the route that the rover should take. According to Lavery, who created the OnSight software, researches can spend 20 years trying to get a grip of interpreting 2D images to judge how far away and how large objects are before getting some kind of master at the 2D. Also people who have been doing it for 20 years who are really good at it actually can’t get a proper grip at it, but with 3D, things might actually be easier for them than the 2D technology. The new setup would allow researchers to move in 3D the reconstruction of the surface of Mars. Later in 2016, the public will have a chance to get a different 3D experience of Mars, with high quality to make it seem as if they were actually doing missions on Mars. The project 2030 is also greatly involved with the new 3D technology which will prepare participants of the mission to be ready for the mission. The virtual mission will follow NASA guidelines that were put in place to have detailed plans for human and robotic exploration. Peggy Wu, saw things differently though, yes she wanted to use virtual reality but for a different reason. The virtual reality could give astronauts a break from the isolation on Mars, rather than taking humans virtually on Mars. The technology is called “Ansible”, which will be studying for a period of 12 months to see what the company could do to make this project efficient for astronauts. So far according to Wu, the first 6 months of study and the results are very promising.
The virtual reality would make astronauts think they are exploring nature, going on vacation, and have them feeling as if they are closer to their families. Can’t you just imagine what it would be like to be virtually on vacation while actually being at school?
