WELCOME TO SLED ISLAND
ABOUT OUR GUEST CURATOR
WELCOME
Sled Island could not be more excited to have iconic provocateur Peaches as
the festival’s 2016 guest curator!
Each year, Sled Island’s guest curator helps set the direction and tone of the
festival through special programming choices and with their presence at
the event. This year, that includes a sure- to- be- wild set by Peaches at Flames
Central on Saturday, June 25. Additionally, she has thoughtfully assembled
some incredible music and film selections, including:
Born In Flamez (Berlin, DE): A post -human electronic music producer
who is rewriting the rules of what it means to be a performer.
Cakes Da Killa (Englewood, NJ): A super high energy MC with
rhymes that sting and excite.
Desire Will Set You Free: A one -of- a- kind love story set against a backdrop
of queer Berlin and some of the best forward -thinking music going.
Hyenaz (Berlin, DE): A duo of performance artists who reimagine the
stage as a platform for bodily transformation.
Junglepussy (Brooklyn, NY): The fiercest rapper in Brooklyn. Expect
club beats and explorations of overlooked subjects in hip -hop today.
Lafawndah (Brooklyn, NY): A global citizen who won’t rest until she’s
explored all the world’s best club fare.
Maluca (New York, NY): A tropical club queen with co -signs from Mad
Decent, Dillon Francis and other fan-favourite dance music staples.
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to the 10th edition of Sled Island. Can you believe we made it to
the double digits?
It’s been a bit of a bumpy ride but here we are, 631 shows and 1,633 bands
later. Since 2007, Sled Island has presented music, comedy, film and visual
art in 126 Calgary venues to over 216,000 attendees. Impossible to count,
but just as important to our story, are the number of people who met at the
festival and started projects or created memories together.
Planningtorock (Berlin, DE): Waging a war on gender normativity
via synth pop tunes as manifestos, Planningtorock’s most recent release is a
remix of Peaches’ track “Vaginoplasty.”
TT The Artist (Baltimore, MD): A bold new force in Baltimore’s rich
dance music scene, TT makes everything from ‘90s diva tunes to dancehall
all her own.
Vice Cooler (Los Angeles, CA): A longtime collaborator of Peaches
with a vast body of work in both video and music.
Peaches has an artistic output and personality unlike anyone else working
today, and we are so excited to welcome her and her picks to this year’s
festival!
7
Sled turning 10 is an achievement we can all be proud of. We, as a community,
made it happen. Through thick and thin you helped us keep it going,
and for that, we are forever grateful.
As a token of our appreciation we’ve decided to throw the party of the decade,
and who better than Peaches to take it to the next level? If you’ve ever
been to a Peaches show, you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t,
prepare to be wowed. It’s an honour to have her join us to celebrate and put
her own stamp on our programming.
We are often asked where we want to see the festival in two, five or even
10 years, but if you ask me, Sled Island is right where it needs to be. Big
enough to get lost for a while, but small enough that you’ll always end up
finding a familiar face. It’s a magical sweet spot that we work hard to maintain.
So take it in while you can and make the most of it—who knows where
we’ll all be in 10 years!
COMEDY
COMEDY
8
We are very VERY excited to present this year’s
Sled Island comedy lineup. It’s more than safe to
say we’ve completely outdone ourselves yet again.
Start lining up now, guarantee your seats, you will
never see another comedy show quite this good.
Steph Tolev! Cheryl Hann! James Hartnett! Crimson
Wave! Success 5000! Locals! These people are
so funny, the exclamation marks are legally part
of their names! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry (from laughing),
you’ll remember what it’s like to FEEL again.
You will tell your grandchildren about these shows.
Only a fool would miss them! A damn fool!
Comedy Curators
ALAN CHO
CALGARY, AB
Fri 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Sat 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Alan Cho is a stalwart of the Calgary comedy scene.
He’s represented the city at Sirius XM’s Next Top
Comic contest, and his Yelp reviews are quoted
around town behind his back by those in the know.
Does he mean for them to be so funny? Who cares,
they ARE funny! Anyway, he does try to be funny
on stage and guess what—it works!
CHERYL HANN
HALIFAX, NS
Fri 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Sat 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Driving all the way to Calgary from Halifax
(seriously, that’s like 86 straight hours!) is the
hilarious Cheryl Hann. Her act defies description,
which actually means something in this case,
because we’re VERY good at description. Cheryl
may actually reinvent comedy right in front of you.
Why would you risk missing that? DON’T. And if
that isn’t enough for you, remember that she was
a member of Picnicface, makers of seriously the
funniest show coming out of North America in 25
years. (Sorry, North America—we have a soft spot
for Sherlock.)
STEPH TOLEV
CRIMSON WAVE
TORONTO, ON
Fri 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio (stand up)
Sat 5:30pm - Good Luck Bar (podcast taping)
Sat 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio (stand up)
One of Toronto’s “most addictive podcasts”
(copyright Toronto Life magazine) is about to
become one of Calgary’s! Natalie Norman and Jess
Beaulieu are best friends, roommates and hosts
of Crimson Wave, the only podcast about gender,
politics, Indian food and, yes, putting tampons in
wrong. They’ve performed at JFL42 and Toronto’s
legendary Comedy Bar, and now they’re bringing
the show on the road to Sled Island!
EMILY BURDEN
EDMONTON, AB
Sat 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
If there is a great comedy show going on in
Edmonton, Emily Burden is on it. Featured at the
Edmonton Comedy Festival and Improvaganza,
she’s also opened for Mark Little, Ari Shaffir and
Jen Grant. And now, thanks to Sled Island, you
don’t have to hop on a Red Arrow to go see her!
JAMES HARTNETT
TORONTO, ON
Fri 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Sat 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Toronto’s James Hartnett has built a solid career
writing sketch comedy for the CBC, but don’t let
that fool you—he’s super funny and you don’t want
to miss him! A member of the legendary Laugh
Sabbath comedy collective and co-host of The
Abernathy Zone podcast, he’s the first to say “don’t
call me ‘alt-comic’” while making scare quotes with
his fingers. We can say this: he is definitely the
alternative to staying home and NOT laughing your
head off!
KAHEER FAZEL
CALGARY, AB
Fri 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Kaheer Fazel is one of the hottest up-andcomers
on the Calgary comedy scene. Armed
with a razor sharp wit, he demolishes everything
from politics to relationships to commercialism
and consumerism. Combining unflinching
honesty with big laughs, Kaheer is known for
his goofy likability and professional delivery of
lighthearted, witty and relatable material. We
think you’ll love him!
LATE NIGHT AT THE PLAZA
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:30pm (doors at 9:00pm) - Plaza Theatre
Late Night at the Plaza is an overnight sensation.
Running for the past several years at the Plaza
Theatre, Late Night at the Plaza is the city’s hottest
late night variety show, drawing comparisons to
Late Night with David Letterman, Late Night with
Sled Island 2016

Conan O’Brien and Late Night with Seth Meyers,
but with cursing! They’ve built something really
energizing, exciting and funny, and we’re thrilled
to have them aboard! Special guests (!) include
Brett Forte and the Heirlooms.
COMEDY
STEPH TOLEV
TORONTO, ON
Fri 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Sat 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Oh my goodness, Steph Tolev is funny. She’s
done it all—Just For Laughs, the Halifax Comedy
Festival, Canadian Music Week, Sirius XM’s Next
Top Comic—and now she’s topping those. Imagine
your funniest pal, telling you the funniest,
dumbest things you’re glad YOU didn’t do. Now
imagine that pal is actually good at standup (not
easy!), and that’s exactly what you’re in for with
Steph.
CHERYL HANN
SUCCESS 5000
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Sat 7:30pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
With Success 5000 you are in for a TREAT. When
we first saw Josh Coss and Robyn Slack climb
the stage with guitars of all things, we were like,
“ugh, who are these guys?” But after they climbed
down, we were like, “WOW, WHO ARE THESE
GUYS?!” Come see them at Sled Island and have
the exact same experience! They might be from
Edmonton, but soon they are going to be famous.
FILM
FILM
For me, Sled Island has always been about discovery.
Every year I find a ton of bands, comedians
and artists that I previously didn’t know, and they
soon become my favourites.
This year, the Sled Island film committee sought to
program films that would offer this same sense of
discovery, whether it be by introducing audiences
to new filmmakers, new subject matter, new
experiences or a new perspective on someone
they thought they knew (see Miss Sharon Jones!).
I’m especially thrilled about our screening of
EMOCEAN – a funny, kaleidoscopic film from the
Berlin-based band Fenster, who we’re bringing to
Calgary to perform a live score. Elsewhere, explore
the first pirate TV station in the US, the counterculture
movement in 1969, love and Berlin city
streets, and the original blues musicians of the
American South.
Most screenings are early, giving you lots of time
to get to Sled’s must-see shows!
DESIRE WILL SET YOU FREE
GERMANY, 92 MINS, 2015. DIR. YONY
LEYSER
Wed 7:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
Selected by Sled Island 2016 guest curator Peaches,
Desire Will Set You Free is a funny, vibrant
narrative that explores artistic and marginalized
life in Berlin. Through Ezra, an American living
in Berlin, we take a journey through Berlin’s
underground and queer scenes, touching on the
city’s complex identity shaped by Weimar, WWII
and David Bowie. Waltzing through the film are
“Godmother of Punk” Nina Hagen, Peaches and
Blixa Bargeld (formerly of Nick Cave & The Bad
Seeds), among others.
Presented with community partner Fairy Tales
Presentation Society.
EMOCEAN
GERMANY, 67 MINS, 2015. DIR. JONATHAN
JARZYNA, JJ WEIHL AND LUCAS UFO /
FENSTER
Tue 9:15pm - The Hifi Club
Get to know Berlin-based multinational synth band
Fenster (performing a live score at the screening!)
via their wild, visionary documentary/mockumentary/musical.
En route to record their third
album, the band members go missing in a parallel
MISS SHARON JONES
dimension where emotions are forbidden. Cue a
psychedelic trip through an absurd reality that can
only be told via VHS cameras, kilometres of tape
and a cast of, oh, 100 people. Made almost in full
by the band, EMOCEAN is a totally engrossing visual
and auditory experience that’s sure to become a
cult classic. Bonus: Fenster will be in attendance to
perform a live score!
HERE COME THE VIDEOFREEX
USA, 79 MINS, 2015. DIR. JON NEALON &
JENNY RASKIN
Thu 9:15pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
In 1969, a CBS executive created a secret project
to broadcast the American counterculture that was
being ignored by mainstream media. The Videofreex,
a group of renegade journalists with handheld
video cameras, sought to democratize media on
CBS’ dime. Over two years, the collective covered
the anti-war, Black Power and women’s movements,
and in 1971, they launched the country’s
first pirate television station at a hippie commune
in the Catskills. Insightful and at times humorous,
this documentary is a time capsule of America on
the brink of huge change and a timely addition to
Sled Island’s 2016 film lineup.
Presented with community partner Calgary Cinematheque.
I AM THE BLUES
USA, 106 MINS, 2015. DIR. DANIEL CROSS
Thu 7:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND Studio
This documentary introduces us to original blues
greats living in America’s Deep South. Though many
are well into their 80s, their personalities and music
are as big, vibrant and soulful as ever. This musical
odyssey through the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou
and the juke joints and BBQs of the Mississippi
Delta is compulsory viewing for anyone who has
ever picked up a guitar. I Am The Blues is a film for
new and dedicated blues fans alike.
MISS SHARON JONES
USA, 93 MINS, 2015. DIR. BARBARA KOPPLE
Tue 7:00pm - The Hifi Club
Directed by two-time Academy Award winner
Barbara Kopple (Harlan County, USA, American
Dream), this moving documentary follows Sharon
Jones and her band The Dap-Kings as they face
Jones’ pancreatic cancer diagnosis—right as they’re
poised for greater success. Tour dates are pushed
and an album is postponed, all taking a toll on
Jones and the band. If you’ve heard the 2014 album
Give the People What They Want, you’ll know
this doc has a happy ending, but Sharon Jones’
courage and soul have to be witnessed.
Presented with community partner the Calgary
Underground Film Festival.
VISUAL ART
—
VISUAL ART
This year’s visual art lineup once again aims to
animate the spaces and non-spaces of Sled Island,
offering a wide range of exhibitions, installations,
performances and screenings to round out your
festival experience and stimulate discussion between
you and your pals. How can art bridge sites, genres
and planes of existence? What does it look like when
the metaphorical and the digital become physical?
How can art act as a mediator for ideological revision
and rendition? Informed by the interdisciplinary,
interspatial and intersectional, the Sled Island 2016
visual art lineup foregrounds work that considers and
complicates identity, gender and perception, while
highlighting the potential of artistic practice to both
incite change and encourage reflection.
Many thanks to our sponsors, the Alberta College
of Art + Design and the Arusha Centre Take Action
Grant, as well as our presenting partners, the
Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers, Contemporary
ecorded media (aka the power of the dead) into a
spastic orgy of cut-ups.
VISUAL ART
Presented in partnership with EMMEDIA and Theatre
Junction GRAND.
GLORY, WHOLE
ARTIST: NINE KENNEDY
June 22 - June 25 - The #1 Legion (Upstairs)
The glory hole occupies a unique realm of sexual
activity that is reliant on a spatial element,
where bodies and desires fragment themselves
through the separation of intimacy and pleasure.
But there’s a problem. They’re all about penises!
Glory holes are found in men-only spaces; they’re
dick-height, dick-sized, and predic(k)table. GLORY,
WHOLE is an architectural intervention subverting
the iconic sexual site into a multitude of
pleasure possibilities. It’s not about the passage
of genitals through a constructed barrier. It’s
about anticipation, trust, illusion, the unknown
and the impermanent. GLORY, WHOLE will materialize
fantasy and propose a utopia of inclusive
experimentation.
THE HERMITESS
ARTIST: JENNIFER CRIGHTON
June 22 - June 25 - Performance June 25, 3:00pm -
see SledIsland.com for more info
The Hermitess is the doppelganger of Jennifer
Crighton. Composed of a film, sound, and sculptural
installation, The Hermitess portrays the voice and visage
of its central character as she comes to terms with
her otherness, searching for a lone and impenetrable
place both within and without. Part landscape video-painting
and part aural incantation, The Hermitess
describes those sweet and troubled dreams played
out against a backdrop of almost still scenes.
childhood is a blurry whirry whir of nostalgia.
ARTIST: JENEEN FREI NJOOTLI
Performance June 25, 8:00pm - Theatre Junction
GRAND - Flanagan
Performance-based artist Jeneen Frei Njootli’s music
creates a dissonant soundscape that is unsettling,
yet alluring. An angle grinder on bone yields
long cello pulls. A hum into a braid of hair rumbles
through the room while an explosive percussive
quality erupts from fingertips on antler. You strain
to see, but some sounds are part of blood memory
and are better felt than gazed upon.
WILL, WISH, WANT OR PURPOSE
CURATOR: JUSTIN WADDELL
June 22 - June 25 / Reception June 24, 8:00pm - The
#1 Legion Basement
Will, Wish, Want or Purpose is a multi-channel video installation
of historical and contemporary experimental
films and videos that explore relationships, sexuality,
love, and cooperation towards self-realization and actualization.
Intended to invoke a spirit of togetherness,
rebellion, light, and strength, this collective space will,
hopefully, motivate participants to consider their physical
actions and bodies in relation to a larger force of
desire, purpose, and personal inhibitions. Will, Wish,
Want or Purpose is also intended to be kind of sexy. It
is a safe and inclusive space where people can be free
to discover, celebrate, and manifest their own path.
There will be a lot of films with explicit sex and nudity
and romance. There will be places for people to stand,
dance, sit, and lay either by themselves or with a few
friends. Including K. Daymond’s Nice Girls Don’t Do It
(1990), GB Jones’ The Lollipop Generation (2008), Go!
Push Pop’s Push Porn (2012), Will Munro’s Rebels Rule
(1998), Steve Reinke’s Sad Disco Fantasia (2001) and
Scott Treleaven’s The Salivation Army (2001).
assault, as well as how to be an active bystander.
Participants in this workshop can expect to leave
with tools to address conflict, clarify boundaries
and understand the role that bystanders can play.
It will be facilitated by Emily Ophus, Community
MUSIC
ADAM STRANGLER
MONTREAL, QC
Fri 5:30pm - Broken City
Sat 1:30pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Romance isn’t dead. It’s hiding between Adam
Strangler’s percussion and bassline mosaic, which
calls to mind a run through Montreal’s back alleys
at night. Singer and guitarist Philip Lavoie says he
trips out on symbolism and the unsaid, where new
wave, Britpop and psych come together in a fuzzy
cocktail.
ADOLYNE
SASKATOON, SK
Fri 5:00pm - Tubby Dog
Sat 8:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
This four-piece transmitter of Canadian noise-metal
redefines doom and gloom with distorted vocals
and harsh noise-rock riffs. Adolyne’s sounds are
atonal, filled with loud and intense howls from
vocalist Skot Hamilton, but not without the occasional
piano melody.
ADVANCES
CALGARY, AB
Fri 9:30pm - Bamboo
Advances celebrate many forms of dance music
that have existed through the ages, producing
some richly simplistic and trés, trés sexy R&B
magic. This mini super crew will have you instantly
shaking your butt to their dreamy, disco-inspired
house jams.
LETHBRIDGE, AB
Sat 11:30pm - Ship & Anchor
Returning to Sled Island with a helluva snarl and
whole lotta attitude is power trio Advertisement.
Ironic in name, straight-up in sound, their take on
punk is a relatively simple one: yell what you feel,
back it up with riffs and hit ‘em hard with bass and
drums. Advertisement make pissed off rock ‘n’ roll
that sounds like hell.
ALEEM KHAN
CALGARY, AB
Thu 8:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND
Formerly of Shaani Cage, Aleem Khan has released
a dizzying quantity of music in an array of styles
in the past year. He’s performing as part of a seven-piece
ensemble at Sled Island, bringing to life
a lush new set of jazz-inflected compositions.
ANAMAI
TORONTO, ON
Fri 7:00pm - Central United Church
Sat 1:00pm - Tubby Dog
The haunting hymns of ANAMAI could fit in the
halls of worship of an alternate universe. They
preach merciless honesty on soothing compositions
of folk, ambient and drone anointed with
electronic elements, creating new sounds out of
timeless ideas.
AN ANT AND AN ATOM
LETHBRIDGE, AB
Sat 9:00pm - Bamboo
Nebulous electronic elements and samples are
enveloped in lush layers of throbbing synthesizers,
then dismantled into small, chaotic fragments that
skip about like ants and bounce like atoms. There
can be bright pops of string sounds one moment
and slow motion buzzsaw distortion the next. It’s
all fair game for An Ant And An Atom.
ANCIENT SNAKE
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:00pm - Wine-Ohs
Ancient Snake constructs ominous soundscapes
rife with brooding intensity in the absence of
rhythm, like the dark hum of a sleeping city—a
mystery of cacophonous, wordless cataclysm.
Unbound by structure, Ancient Snake creates as
much a feeling as a sound, a chaotic abstraction of
percussion, synth and saxophone.
ANION
VANCOUVER, BC
Fri 5:00pm - Bamboo
Anion make heavy tunes with plenty of grit and
cues from many corners of extreme music. A little
bit of noise rock, a heaping helping of hardcore
and a slimy layer of sludge grease are all in the
abrasive mix. Their May release, Fractions of Failure,
is yet another step into the mire, and we can’t
wait to see what it looks like on stage.
AQUARIUS
VICTORIA, BC
Wed 8:30pm - Local 510
Like a voice of ghostly desire carried across an
ocean, Aquarius’ music feels distant but far-reaching.
Influenced by French cold wave, the duo’s
minimalist dark pop settles around you like a
menacing fog while their unsettling vocals send a
chill up your spine.
MUSIC
ASTRAKHAN
VANCOUVER, BC
Sat 10:00pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Astrakhan painstakingly construct their epic songs
by building tight riff upon tight riff. Plowing
forward to create detail-soaked arrangements
tipping into ‘80s and ‘90s classic heavy metal, they
touch on stoner metal, doom and even some psych
along the way. The two vocalists wail at and with
one another, pulling at brawny guitars and heavy
drums with firm execution. Their latest album also
features killer trippy artwork to boot.
ASTRAL GUNK
MONTREAL, QC
Fri 2:00pm - Sloth Records
Fri 7:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
Riding the gnar wave direct from Sackville, Astral
Gunk’s brand of skuzzy, gunked-out garage rock
brims with straight-up James Dean ‘tude and
scattershot guitar freakouts. Add to the mix some
heavy, lose-control ‘60s-psych, ear-blasting megaphone-y
howls and cook in the oven. This is the
recipe for a wild, hip-shaking good time.
ASTRAL SWANS
CALGARY, AB
Wed 7:00pm - Central United Church
If you made a Venn Diagram for sardonic, minimal,
earnest bedroom indie-rock, right smack dab in
the middle you’d find this collection of poppy, witty
gems. You can hear a smile work its way across
Astral Swans’ face if you listen carefully.
AVEC LE SOLEIL SORTANT DE SA BOUCHE
MONTREAL, QC
Wed 11:00pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Cranking out relentlessly danceable guitar
experimentations with a heavy Afrobeat influence,
these veteran indie rockers are festival favourites.
Their extended, mostly instrumental jams are
designed to bring people together across cultural
and genre divides. This cosmopolitan quartet lights
up the dancefloor with the sun shining out of their
mouths—and their amps.
THE AVULSIONS
SASKATOON, SK
Thu 9:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Sat 8:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Nihilistic goth-pop act The Avulsions are the
regenerated version of their former selves, Phalec
Baldwin—no word on whether that’s a result of a
cease and desist from the elder Baldwin. This trio
of macabre melody-makers like their darkness
in echoing, atmospheric guitars and despondent
vocals. The end is nigh, and disillusionment never
sounded better.
THE BACKHOMES
VICTORIA, BC
Fri 11:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Sat 6:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Over the course of just two albums, The Backhomes
have mastered the act of making deliriously dreamy
psych-pop with Krautrock-like propulsion and gauzy,
washed-out atmosphere. The last year has seen the
duo wowing audiences all over North America in
support of their latest full-length, TIDALWAVE.
MUSIC
B.A. JOHNSTON
HAMILTON, ON
Wed 9:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Thu 12:00am - Ship & Anchor
Did you have a favourite uncle growing up?
One who loved a terrible football team, would
make his own french fries, write songs about
his favourite Nintendo games, or maybe spend
too much time in his underpants when company
came over? If not, you should see if B.A. has a
sibling that can adopt you so he can be your new
favourite uncle.
THE BASEMENT DEMONS
CALGARY, AB
Fri 8:00pm - Tubby Dog
The Basement Demons, who range in age from
nine to 20 years old, are a band of no wave-loving
kids that all happen to be related. Instead of
playing video games like many their age, they’re
playing Sled Island. They dig making badass
sludgy punk that sounds like Sonic Youth’s earlier
work, and they might be the coolest family ever.
and drums. Prepare for a heavy, rumbling set of
devastating dirge this June.
THE BESNARD LAKES
MONTREAL, QC
Wed 12:00am - Palomino (Downstairs)
The Besnard Lakes were one of the last bands to
perform before flooding forced the cancellation of
Sled Island 2013. With walls of reverb and soaring
psych-rock soundscapes that lull and crash, the
calm before the storm can be both beautiful
and chilling. The band makes their return to the
festival for the first time since with a new album, A
Coliseum Complex Museum.
BETRAYERS
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 12:00am - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
If you were holding a séance in your garage to
bring back flower child party vibes, this would be
your soundtrack. With their psychedelic grooves
and layered guitars and keys, BETRAYERS mix
brooding with party rock ‘n’ roll.
a pedal buffet. His guitar shapeshifts and seemingly
mimics other instruments to create a rich soundscape
at the outer limits of guitar possibilities.
BLANKA
MONTREAL, QC
Tue 12:00am - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
Thu 8:30pm - Local 510
Harmoniously finding room for both a gothic,
coldwave minimalism and a grit-teethed, post-punk
maximalism in their music, the band ought to make
a seriously impressive Calgary debut at Sled Island.
BLÜ SHORTS
CALGARY, AB
Wed 11:00pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Thu 9:00pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
This is high energy art punk with a sci-fi twist. Blü
Shorts travel in dreamy, processed vocals over psychedelic
guitar riffs and a battering rhythm section. Always
one for surprises and eye-bulging live performances,
the sophomore appearance of the band at Sled Island
should boggle minds and disrupt the dance floor.
BEACH SEASON
CALGARY, AB
Wed 12:30am - The Hifi Club
Calgary’s chief purveyor of “booty wave,” Beach
Season is the duo formerly known as Obey the
Crooks. Beach Season’s sonic palette is an electro-R&B
hybrid of eternal sun-bleached chillwave.
Imagine the airy blissed-out synthesizers of Art
of Noise’s “Moments in Love” and the funky,
disco-hued ambitions of Poolside.
BELL WITCH
SEATTLE, WA
Fri 7:00pm - Bamboo
Sat 12:00am - Palomino (Downstairs)
Bell Witch make slow-moving, cathartic “funeral
doom” that blurs the occult with the most intense
human anguish. The duo of Dylan Desmond and
Andy Shreibman cut a wide swath of sonic and
emotional territory using just vocals, bass guitar
BIG KNIFE LITTLE KNIFE
MONTREAL, QC
Fri 10:30pm - Ship & Anchor
“DC meets Ottawa meets Olympia in the ‘90s,”
is how Big Knife Little Knife succinctly sum
themselves up. It’s fair: they’re influenced by
various corners of punk and its offshoots. They’re
no copycats, however, with vocalist/bassist David
Tkach shining through as a do-or-die frontman
and Kevin Jagernauth (formerly of Weights & Measures)
slinging riffs. Add in how insistently vital
the angular guitar and stop-start rhythm section is
to their post-hardcore sound, and you have a band
that keeps the emotional impact of punk intact.
BITTER FICTIONS
CALGARY, AB
Sat 12:00am - Bamboo
Let Devin Friesen take you on a journey through
time and space. The vehicle is an amp, a guitar and
BOG BODIES
CALGARY, AB
Tue 11:00pm - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
Wed 11:00pm - Bamboo
From the warped depths of some sewer wormhole
in Calgary, Bog Bodies secrete demented drum
machine punk insanity over a scum pile of guitar
and bass, barely audible vocals and the occasional
spasm of brain-busting video game bleeps. This is
what an invasion of malevolent alien spores with
angry eyeballs sounds like.
BORN IN FLAMEZ
BERLIN, DE
**PEACHES PICK**
Thu 11:00pm - Dickens
Fri 12:30am - Bamboo
Born In Flamez eschews boundaries between
humanity and technology, gender and genre,
to manifest a new musical landscape free from
ANGEL OLSEN
ST LOUIS, MO
Wed 9:00pm - Central United Church
Angel Olsen sounds like the best singer-songwriters of yesterday, instilled with contemporary
insight and ability. The singer cut her teeth touring with acts like Bonnie
“Prince” Billy and The Cairo Gang, but it was her solo recordings that catapulted her to
critical acclaim in 2012 when she released her debut album Half Way Home.
Where Half Way Home was mostly just Olsen and an acoustic guitar, 2014’s Burn Your
Fire for No Witness sprawls thanks to the addition of drummer Josh Jaeger and bassist
Stuart Bronaugh. The three-piece complement each other perfectly, bringing Olsen’s
ruminations on loss and loneliness to life in a profound way.
Songs like “Forgiven/Forgotten” showcase just how far Olsen has come since her
2012 debut. The song rocks like nothing else in her catalog, yet it teems with Olsen’s
distinct folk sound.
Olsen’s voice is among the best in music today. It’s a rich blend of Roy Orbison and
Loretta Lynn; her natural vibrato shining through on every song. The most affecting moments
on Burn Your Fire for No Witness are when Olsen steps to the mic alone, like on
“White Fire.” The power of her voice alone is enough to quiet even the loudest of venues.
Sled Island 2016

constraint or definition. Their music treads deep
sub-bass, battered beats and ethereal synthetic
tones to transport the listener to an alternate
future where nightclubs and art galleries merge,
and no one is just one thing.
BRASS
VANCOUVER, BC
Sat 11:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Not only will BRASS get you chanting along to
their punk-infused anthems, they will leave you
wanting more of their unpredictable antics. If you
love fast paced, mosh pit-inducing hardcore and
energy levels that hit the top of the high striker,
this band should be on your list.
BY DIVINE RIGHT
TORONTO, ON
Thu 11:00pm - Ship & Anchor
Fri 8:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Indie-rock veterans By Divine Right have been
at the forefront of the Canadian underground
pop movement since their first release, 1997’s
Discordia. Pairing engaging pop melodies and
harmonies with a driving rock sound, they’ve consistently
delivered top-shelf esoteric alt-rock over
the course of their six full-length albums, most
recently on 2014’s excellent Organized Accidents.
MUSIC
beyond genre lines. Cakes has a talent for witty,
smart-mouthed verses over snappy, high-energy
beats, and this show is going to make dance floor
heroes out of wallflowers.
CHASTITY
WHITBY, ON
Thu 7:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
Chastity (not Chastity Belt) is a loud punk band
with just two short songs released, but plenty said
in that time. Touching on issues like mental health
and social inequality, NSFW songs like “popular
belief” eschew subtlety for a direct assault. It’s not
all message, though—their needle-like guitars and
throbbing bass hit just as hard as the words.
BURNT SHRINES
CALGARY, AB
Wed 8:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Abrasive, gloomy and droney in all the right ways,
Burnt Shrines create a mood with their first note
and explore it right down to the bottom of its dark
heart. The all-star backing band of Jordan Tettensor,
Rena Kozak and Ian Russell set a suitably
dramatic stage for Javier Palomino’s theatrical,
brooding vocals.
CAITY FISHER
EDMONTON, AB
Thu 9:00pm - Ship & Anchor
Fri 2:45pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Caity Fisher’s guitar-heavy project centres on her
deep, soothing vocals and well-crafted, serious-yet-playful
lyrics. With lines like, “Some things
are beautiful like headbangers in slo-mo,” you’ll
be chanting her pretty ditties in your head well
after the first spin.
CHASTITY BELT
SEATTLE, WA
Wed 1:00am - Broken City
Thu 11:30pm - Tubby Dog
Chastity Belt are a four-piece that make rock music for
the bored, but not boring. Their tongue-in-cheek stoner
pop sits beneath a heavy blanket of reverb haze, lackadaisically
moving between surf and grunge. Cultural
commentary filters through apathy and self-deprecation,
their urgency betraying their disposition.
BURRO
CALGARY, AB
Thu 11:00pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Unsung heroes of the underground improv
scene—literally— this mighty trio follows pure
instrumental sound down rabbit holes Alice would
hesitate to jump into. Feedback and space echo
feed Kosmische drone and driving grooves that
merging of sophisticated tropical percussion
CHIEFTAIN
CALGARY, AB
Fri 3:00pm - Bamboo
Sat 10pm - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
A dread sense of omen comes to life in the
crushing epics of Calgary doom metal purveyors
Chieftain. This quintet is like a bygone tribe trudging
snowy mountain passes in search of a single
CHILD ACTRESS
CALGARY, AB
Thu 6:30pm - Local 510
Grief, longing and love are all laid bare here, but
don’t settle for just looking at the lyric sheet. There’s
so much beauty to be had in these tender, evocative
songs that you’ll be ordering a double and slow dancing
before you realize you need to dry your eyes.
CHRIS LORENZO
BIRMINGHAM, UK
Thu 8:45pm - Sled Island Block Party
Thu 1:00am - The HiFi Club
Chris Lorenzo is quickly gaining recognition for
leading the vanguard of the UK’s latest wave of
bass-infused house music. Slick, sexy low end
plays off crisp drums, causing a jittery friction that
can only be resolved through dance. Whether it’s
making bangers with queen Katy B or diving into
the weirder reaches of bass capabilities, Lorenzo
keeps a firm hold on both your ears and your hips.
CHRON GOBLIN
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:05pm - John Dutton Theatre
Sat 11:00pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Calgary stoner rock heroes Chron Goblin possess
a mighty combination of swagger and muscle,
combined with the smirking wit that has made
them one of Calgary’s best bands since forming in
2009. They’ll be hitting Sled Island fresh off their
2016 European tour in support of their crushing
third album, 2015’s Backwater.
CHUURCH
CALGARY, AB
Thu 5:30pm - Sled Island Block Party
Thu 11:00pm - HiFi Club
Chuurch is the mysterious collaboration between
Makemdef (Justin MacLean) and EviCtion (Jeff
Wilson). Both have had careers of their own,
treading the worlds of hip-hop and dance music,
but this summer marks their premiere live dates as
Chuurch. Based on their mix for the Perfect Driver
podcast, all signs point to subterranean level bass
and ominous beats.
CIRCUIT DES YEUX
CHICAGO, IL
Sat 7:00pm - Threatre Junction Grand
Sun 6:30pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Haley Fohr’s music strikes a unique balance
between the personal and universal. As Circuit des
Yeux she creates music that embodies the complexity
of human emotions, juxtaposing tenderness
and grief, ecstasy and horror, using sounds as
representations of the emotional spectrum that we
all experience.
COCAINE EYES
EDMONTON, AB
Sat 10:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
If you were ever curious about what stuffing a dryer
full of razor blades would sound like musically,
Cocaine Eyes come pretty damn close. Offering
seething vocals with the sharpest guitar solos,
Edmonton’s messiest punk band (which is saying a
lot) demand immediate and aggressive attention.
Jump in the pit for this one, if you dare!
CONCEALER
EDMONTON, AB
Thu 11:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Concealer’s Mark Davis and missmannered are a
duo each mining their own distinct flavour of noirish
electro-pop. One part “post-folk” and the other
part proto-punk, this is the kind of heavy, hypnotic
energy you’ll want to absorb.
CONDUCT
WINNIPEG, MB
Wed 10:00pm - Dickens
Executing atonal, tension-building post-punk
with militant precision, Conduct’s outsider energy
stands in good company among ally Steve Albini’s
impressive canon. Their rewarding live shows are
a feast of expression, utilizing torrents of serrated
guitar, bass and drums, and the occasional hammer
put to sheet metal amid frontman Nicholas
Liang’s mechanical, anxiety-inducing stare. This
is where the industrialist spirit of Einstürzende
Neubauten meets Big Black’s showering din.
COUNTERFEIT JEANS
EDMONTON, AB
Sun 9:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Counterfeit Jeans’ music is based in melodic, serpentine
guitar lines married to a driving rhythm
section, careening seamlessly through breakneck
shifts. This all results in a massive sound that
you’d be shocked to know is made by only a group
of three.
CRACK CLOUD
CALGARY, AB
Tue 10:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Sat 9:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Crack Cloud is a snarling, convulsive punk band
blanketed in glistening jangle-pop vibes. At
once urgent and rhythmic, the band’s sonic
approach has a frenzied, neurotic feel with precise
chord-bashings and melodic, tiptoeing breaks so
hypnotic they could put you into a coma.
CRI
MONTREAL, QC
Sat 11:00pm - The HiFi Club
CRi makes retro-futuristic electronic music that
fits as well in your headphones as it does in the
club. His music mixes glossy synths with a variety
of beat styles ranging from downtempo to garage.
BUILT TO SPILL
BOISE, ID
Sat 8:10pm - Olympic Plaza
Back in the ‘90s when indie rock bands were measured largely by the loudness of
their fuzz, Built To Spill found hooks where no one else was looking. This is a band
that perfectly bridged the gap between the Jazzmaster fuzz of their contemporary
J. Mascis with the emerging success of pop-punk. Their early work is littered with
slick guitar rhythms and a keen sensibility for charming chorus melodies sung in
earnest by frontman Doug Martsch. “Carry The Zero” and its thick staccato guitar
breakdown is still a set staple 17 years later.
But Built to Spill is hardly a band in reverse, rather, 2013’s Untethered Moon is
their most self-assured release in years. Retaining punk-like instrumental simplicity,
while offering dynamic and clever song structures, this latest release draws
attention to how incredibly well attuned the band is to the oft-ignored relationship
between punk rock and folk music.
Doug Martsch is the man behind the bushy grey beard and glassy vocals, and he
performs Built to Spill’s beautiful, obfuscated lyrics in an eyes-closed reverie. Without
running around the stage, he manages to put his whole body into the performance and
pull off some of the band’s more interesting guitar licks. Built to Spill is a band that gives
so much more than it takes, with years of incredible songs and a live show to match.
Wed 11:00pm - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
Thu 12:00am - Palomino (Downstairs)
Crosss' brand of metal-inspired noise-rock is like a
howl into the void, their scorched earth sonics relentlessly
destroying everything in their path. The
perennial Sled Island standouts return once again
DADA PLAN
VANCOUVER, BC
Thu 9:30pm - Broken City
Fri 5:30pm - Less 17/Secret Eight
Bizarro, jazz-tinged psych-pop act Dada Plan have
been voicing their suspicion of the Internet since
their 2014 debut release, A Plan Is Free, where
satire merged with dystopian ideas about online
“profile culture” and our relationship with technology.
If Marshall McLuhan were alive and young
today, he’d be following Dada Plan on Bandcamp.
DARTO
SEATTLE, WA
Thu 4:00pm - Sloth Records
Thu 10:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Fri 4:00pm - Local 510
This trio of siblings is a punishing, feedback-laden
juggernaut using repetition not as an end in itself,
but to communicate what can't be said otherwise.
Desertion and anguish run through the music
like a polluted river through a decaying urban
landscape, where your only hope for survival is to
fling yourself headlong into oblivion.
DAVACHI/SMITH
VANCOUVER, BC
Fri 8:00pm - Central United Church
Sarah Davachi should be familiar to Sled Island
attendees—she has shaken figurative chandeliers
from the National Music Centre to the Central United
Church without breaking a sweat. Now consider
the parallel expertise of fellow composer/collector/
obsessive Richard Smith. Take a master class in
obliterative drone performance with this duo and
live to tell the tale. We dare you.
DAWN OF MIDI
BROOKLYN, NY
Sat 8:30pm - Threatre Junction GRAND
Minimal techno, krautrock and West African traditional
music, all at once…from a jazz trio? Dawn of
Midi’s 2013 album Dysnomia, coming after the minimal
free jazz of First, was and still is like nothing
else out there. This is music that actively makes you
smarter: your brain will thank you for this one.
DEAD CROSS
SAN DIEGO, CA
Wed 11:00pm - Dickens
“This band provokes my aggression,” stated legendary
ex-Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo of his
new band, Dead Cross, which includes members
of The Locust and Retox. Produced by noted metal
producer Ross Robinson, their ripping thrash
rhythms go head to head with doom riffs played
at the highest possible intensity. Dead Cross let
loose unyielding thrash with the ferocity of a
jackhammer.
DIAMOND MIND
EDMONTON, AB
Wed 6:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Sat 3:00pm - Local 510
Daydreaming is one of life’s best escapes. The
same goes for Diamond Mind, whose slightly
askew, instantly relatable melodies carry the listener
like a tube down a river. Their cotton-soft vocals
and easy ridin’ riffs are like a mini-vacation from
all the nagging bothers of your day, and we can’t
think of a better time than June to go see ‘em.
DJ EZ
LONDON, UK
Sat 12:00am - The HiFi Club
DJ EZ can keep people dancing all day and all night
— literally! A decades-long fixture in radio and the
UK garage scene, EZ did a 24-hour set in February
of this year in support of cancer research. Make sure
to rest up for his set at Sled Island, because you’re
going to need plenty of endurance to keep up.
DORIES
MONTREAL, QC
Thu 2:00pm - Sloth Records
Thu 10:30pm - Local 510
Former Albertans Dories are back at Sled Island
to give us the latest razor-edged post-punk ditties
we’ve been missing. A little jangle here, a little
pop melody there, what we love most about Dories
is their talent for ultra-tense instrumentalism and
straight-ahead vocal delivery.
DOUG HOYER
EDMONTON, AB
Friday 11:30pm - Broken City
Indie-pop mainstay Doug Hoyer is enraptured in the
dream life. His exploding-heart songcraft is earnest
without taking itself too seriously, traversing ‘80s-nodding
synth jams and world music-inspired grooves that
recall the rhythmic energy of Talking Heads. Thoughtful
and danceable with a sense of flourishing romance
and a flash of soft-focus disco, Hoyer will stop at nothing
to pull on your heartstrings.
DREAM WHIP
CALGARY, AB
Fri 11:00pm - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Sat 1:50pm - Olympic Plaza
Dream Whip’s music is reminiscent of their dessert
topping namesake. Their specialty is a light, fluffy
blend of garage punk and indie pop that exists
in a permanent haze, moving kaleidoscopically
through the world. This band will be the icing on
the top of your Sled Island.
DUCHESS SAYS
MONTREAL, QC
Thu 1:00am - Palomino (Downstairs)
Fri 9:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
An enduring electro-rock force, Duchess Says is set
to treat audiences to another explosive appearance
at Sled Island. The band strikes the sweet spot
between fiery aggression and straight-up danceability.
No wonder they’re regarded one of the best
DUMB
VANCOUVER, BC
Thu 11:00pm - Bamboo
Fri 4:00pm - Sloth Records
Behold punk rock from outer space. Dumb’s
robotic, curt vocals and surprising bursts of soft
romance are fabulously anti-gravity. Their first LP,
Beach Church, offers sideways guitars and upside
down rhythms to give listeners and audiences a
taste of life in orbit.
EMPTY HEADS
CALGARY, AB
Wed 10:00pm - Broken City
Think of a great pop song. Now run it through
a grimy fuzz pedal and a Marshall stack in the
there. Empty Heads sound the same way a beer
EVEN GODS CAN DIE
SAN JOSE, CA
Fri 9:30pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Sat 9:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Equally adept at creating airy textures that bring
to mind the forests of their Northern California
home as they are at dropping thunderous metal
grooves that portend the collapse of ancient ruins,
San Jose’s Even Gods Can Die is an aural study in
tension and release, deftly moving between moods
in the space of a single composition.
EVERYDAY THINGS
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 4:30pm - Broken City
Feverish dance parties and Everyday Things will
easily become synonymous when you hear the first
few bouncy chords of the single “All Day All Night.”
The Edmonton supergroup including Ben Disaster
(Thick Lines, Tee-Tahs), Troy Snaterse (Stepmothers,
Altameda), Drew Lefebvre and Kevin Breton deliver
retro melodies and the brightest poppy vocals that
are impossible not to bop along to. Transportation
to a simpler musical time is guaranteed.
THE EX-BOYFRIENDS
CALGARY, AB
Sat 10:30pm - Dickens
Garage rock with riffs that just won’t quit, The
Ex-Boyfriends are here to satisfy your party
cravings. With a live show that features crazed
frontman Djewel with some combination of feather
boas, leather pants and a lot of spilled beer, you
can expect to be left shaken, rattled and rolled.
FAITH HEALER
EDMONTON, AB
Thu 11:30pm - Broken City
Fri 5:15pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Jessica Jalbert has been riding high following the
release of Cosmic Troubles, her debut album as
Faith Healer. Since then, Jalbert’s breezy rendition
of ‘60s psych-rock, full of bouncing bass lines and
kaleidoscopic guitar work, has earned fans for the
singer-songwriter far and wide.
FEED DOGS
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 5:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Fri 10:00pm - Tubby Dog
Though they've been together barely a year—forming
just in advance of last year's Not Enough Fest
(organized in part by the band’s members)—Feed
Dogs are growing their presence in Edmonton's
music scene. Emotional and grungy, their hookfilled
"sleazy pup-punk" is unafraid of using pickslides
to punctuate its eardrum-rattling catharsis.
FEVERFEW
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 2:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Fri 10:00pm - Wine-Ohs
When the solo project of classically-trained harpist
Mary Wood joined forces with a drummer, bassist
and electronic beatmaker, freak-classical unit
THE FLATLINERS
TORONTO, ON
Fri 12:30am - Ship & Anchor
With Fat Wreck Chords’ stamp of approval, over ten
FOAM
LONDON, ON
Wed 9pm - Dickens
Thu 8:30pm - Tubby Dog
Foam acts on murky, well-timed sludge. Their angsty,
dirty guitars and heavy drumming stimulate moshing
other in the pit, their repetitive riffs and shrieks drown
out everything else with pleasing squalls of sludge.
viscerally, inimitably new and compelling.
FRIESEN/WATERS DUO
CALGARY, AB
Wed 10:00pm - Wine-Ohs
The Friesen/Water duo exists where precision and
chaos come together, using intuition and raw
feeling to flesh out their conscious and unhinged
manipulations of sound. Devin Friesen’s expansive
walls of guitar distortion coat Nate Waters’
improvised saxophone, creating an unpredictably
calming experience of drone and free jazz.
FRIGS
TORONTO, ON
Thu 6:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
A bit less dirty but definitely still FRIGS, the lovably
filthy Toronto quartet has cleaned up nothing
but their name. Still dank, still sweaty, still making
rock ‘n’ roll best heard in the dark after midnight,
FRIGS are a band that take grunge and psych
through the sludge of urban living.
GAWKER
CALGARY. AB
Wed 9:20pm - Bamboo
Fri 5:00pm - Local 510
Gawker is a punk band with a bit of a sick sense of
goofiness to keep things light and loose.
PORTLAND, OR
Sun 5:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Dream-gothing surf-rockers Genders are the perfect
Wed 8:30pm - Broken City (Patio)
Thu 8:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Don’t try to keep these lipstick-smeared pottymouth
punks down. Like the riot grrrls before
them, Glad Rags’ confrontational cuts about
everything from sexual harassment to anorexia are
rallying cries that hit like a punch in the gut. This
is the next wave of femme firebrands giving patriarchal
society the middle finger one screaming
guitar riff at a time.
HANSMOLE
VICTORIA, BC
Wed 7:30pm - Local 510
Unlike a lot of lo-fi pop, Hansmole’s vocals come
through clearly. It’s a welcome anchor among
unpredictable electronic drums, lazily wading
grooves and walls of synthesizer. Join her on a
journey through art pop that confronts and soothes
the senses.
DEAFHEAVEN
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Sat 1:00am - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
To say Deafheaven are one of the best bands in metal is a disservice to a band that
seems intent on destroying genre. Deafheaven are one of the best bands working in
music, period—merging black metal, shoegaze and a variety of other disparate genres
into an electrifying take on metal that is equal parts emotion and evisceration.
The five-piece rose to prominence and critical acclaim with the release of their sophomore
album, 2013’s Sunbather. Their latest album, New Bermuda, finds the band
expanding conventional ideas of metal even further, incorporating influences like
Red House Painters, Wilco and Low.
Deafheaven’s live show is punishing sonically as well as physically. Drummer Daniel
Tracy anchors the band with pummeling blast beats and a technicality that is even more
impressive in person than it is recorded. Frontman George Clarke haunts the stage,
his near-indecipherable vocals like a priest delivering a sermon. Topping it all off is
lead guitarist Kerry McCoy’s incorporation of old-school thrash riffs that sound as good
now as they did when Anthrax used them. But Deafheaven are at their best are when
they finally relent. A rare moment of bliss forms just long enough for you to catch your
breath—before it all falls apart and the band picks up again.
HEAVEN FOR REAL
HALIFAX, NS
Thu 6:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Fri 3:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Hailing from the Maritimes, Heaven For Real is
an art-pop band whose sound recalls the sea and
blue sky on a warm afternoon. Lethargic pop riffs
and intricately written lyrics make for effortlessly
catchy tracks that’ll catch your ear and keep it
held.
HELLEN
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 3:30pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Squalling post-punk guitars, a driving rhythm section
and anguished vocals are the building blocks
of HELLEN’s sound. From the 1-2-3-4 drumstick
clicks to the last fading bit of feedback, these cats
don’t let up. Possibly the most exciting punk rock
to come out of Edmonton in years.
HERMITESS
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:00pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
With numerous projects and musical incarnations
under her belt, harpist and singer-songwriter Jennifer
Crighton invites a roving cast of collaborators
into her orbit for the Hermitess. Combining the
ethereal notes of her big, blue electric harp with
a chorus of women’s voices and robust layers, her
sound is instant and mesmerizing.
HEXRAY
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:30pm - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Sat 8pm - Broken City (Patio)
There’s a whiff of the East Coast in this melodic
slacker trio. Their catchy, sometimes cacophonous
numbers feature harmonies and song structures
that dip their toes in summery nostalgia but
stretch out to swim in deeper, more idiosyncratic
waters. This is garage-pop done right.
THE HIGHEST ORDER
TORONTO, ON
Fri 11:00pm - Wine-Ohs
Sat 4:30pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
The Highest Order is here to show you the
meaning of psychedelic country music. Melodic,
no-nonsense lyrics of the heart are laid smoothly
over an almost inscrutable intersection of soulful,
‘60s-inspired psychedelic rock and classic country
music. Come for the entrancing vocals of Simone
Schmidt and stay for the weirdness
HOLDING HANDS
MONTREAL, QC
Thu 7:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Sat 3:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Three-piece combo Holding Hands’ sunny feel and
grunge-y guitar sounds echo the ramshackle East
Coasters who rose out of the early ‘90s Halifax music
scene. Their energetic songs are sure to bring
an approving head bob and maybe even a smile to
your face. Now hop on this sunbeam and soak up
the good vibes.
HOOD JOPLIN
EDMONTON, AB
Thu 1:00am - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
Sat 9:30pm - The Hifi Club
Manicure Records act Hood Joplin is proven when
it comes to serving turn-up rap music and 160 bpm
footwork, but that doesn’t stop her from throwing
some dank bass or Bollywood melody into the mix.
She knows the dance floor well enough to take it to
its outer limits and back without missing a beat.
HSY
TORONTO, ON
Thu 10:30pm - Tubby Dog
Fri 10:30pm - Dickens
HSY make seriously abrasive music you can dance
to. The band's sophomore album Bask is an immediate
gut punch of noisy guitars, yelps and drums
that bore a hole into your head. It’s a grim and
grimy affair that rips as much as it creeps.
HUMANS
VANCOUVER, BC
Thu 7:45pm - Sled Island Block Party
Electropop duo HUMANS are turning the quintessential
club jam into an art form, marrying
danceable, genre-melding sounds with psychotropic
visuals, fashion and whatever else they feel like
pulling into their universe. Their debut 2015 fulllength,
Noontide, pulsates to the kind of stylishly
dark synth grooves you might find inside the car of
that scorpion jacket-wearing antihero in Drive.
HURRY UP
PORTLAND, OR
Sat 12:30am - Ship & Anchor
Sun 7:30pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Maggie Vail (Bangs, CASH Music, ex-Kill Rock
Stars), Kathy Foster and Westin Glass (both of The
Thermals) are Hurry Up. Originally setting out to be
a hardcore band, the tried and true trio make fuzzy,
lo-fi punk of a more nuanced nature. The aggression
is there, though, and tracks like “And Then” pit
sneering vocals against gritty, stop-start riffs.
HUSH PUP
TORONTO, ON
Fri 10:30pm - Broken City
In this pop duo's dreamworld, Ida Maidstone's
breathy vocals and synths mingle with Torrie Seager's
shimmering guitar work to create music that's like
a mirage, nailed to reality by the light insistence of
a drum machine. They betray their coastal origins
(Victoria, BC) with melancholy late-summer melodies
that waft off the stage like half-acknowledged urges.
HYENAZ
BERLIN, DE
**PEACHES PICK**
Fri 9:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND
Hyenaz performances are the antidote to feeling
like you’re still on Earth. The duo adopt costumes,
knotted stances and varying levels of nudity to
create physical performance pieces that are equal
parts body art, ritual and dance. Their unnerving
vocals and insistent rhythms capture the complexity
of their animal namesake, one moment ferocious
and the other soft. Hyenaz has carved cult status
somewhere between laughter and a yowl.
JAY ARNER
VANCOUVER, BC
Fri 6:00pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Sat 4:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Mint Records’ shy savant of DIY pop-rock ditties, Jay
Arner knows his way around an infectious synth line.
Accordingly, Arner has earned a rep for both his solo
output and his oozier duo Energy Slime. The latest
track off his anticipated sophomore Jay II, “Crystal
Ball,” is a testament to his love for bass fuzz, glam-y
‘80s sounds and analog electronics.
JESSE AND THE DANDELIONS
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 4:15pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Sat 4:00pm - Central Memorial Park
A Mutual Understanding is a spry and classic take
on indie rock that lingers in the grey area between
platonic and romantic. Soft and subtle, Jesse and
the Dandelions use soothing vocals and well-paced
songs to make their work tender on the ears. They
will inspire you to slow dance with your honey.
JO PASSED
MONTREAL, QC
Thu 6:30pm - Tubby Dog
Sat 2:00pm - Broken City
Out of the ashes of celebrated Vancouver psychprog
mayflies Sprïng, frontman Joseph Hirabayashi
has drawn his new outfit Jo Passed. The
familiar vocals and charmingly aimless melodies
remain, but the new balance of psych and grunge-pop
is what really shines through.
JOHNNY DE COURCY
MONTREAL, QC
Thu 11:00pm - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Fri 8:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
Born metal but learned to love baroque, pop and
grunge? You might have a lot in common with
Johnny de Courcy. Leaving metal titans Black Wizard
in 2011, de Courcy lives in the Venn diagram at the
centre of Kurt Cobain, PJ Harvey and Louis XIV.
JOM COMYN
EDMONTON, AB
Wed 9:00pm - Ship & Anchor
Thu 5:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
There’s a warm, yet haunted tone in singer-songwriter
Jom Comyn’s sound. His evocative lyrics
enhanced by the subtlety of his delivery, Comyn’s
sound ranges from breezy, acoustic songs to
moodier electric numbers, with an understated dissonance
always heightening the dynamic tension.
ESG
BRONX, NY
Wed 12:30am - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
You know ESG even if you don’t know you know ESG. Early track “UFO” is one of the most sampled
songs in history, with credits in liner notes on releases by artists like 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., J.
Dilla, Liars and at least 400 others.
Formed at the end of the ‘70s by three sisters and a few friends, ESG has gone on to release five
studio albums in the decades since. The first of which, Come Away With ESG, was an irresistible debut
of minimalist, funk-inspired post-punk. Pitchfork Media has called it one of the best albums of the
‘80s, and past Sled Island guest curator Kathleen Hanna cited it as a major influence on her band Le
Tigre. It’s easy to relay a long list of admirers of the band, given their perplexing ability to fit in at the
Paradise Garage as easily as they did in the studio with Factory Records’ Martin Hannett.
ESG grew up with James Brown in the household and Latin rhythms spilling into the windows from
the street. This helped inspire them to make languid bass rideouts anchored by overlapping polyrhythms.
It worked as well on the dancefloor as it did in the cheeky no wave scene of the time.
Over 30 years later, ESG are still an underlooked influencer of everything from punk and art rock to
funk and hip-hop. Sled Island is proud to host them at their first Canadian show in eight years.
MUSIC
JONS
VICTORIA, BC
Wed 6:30pm - Local 510
Thu 5:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Jons’ last tape of lackadaisical, lo-fi pop Serfs of Today
sounded like Harry Nilsson on (more) acid. Their
music is delightfully sweet with a sonic palette that
burbles and warps as if it were coming from a broken
cassette deck. The band is overdue for a release, so
expect some fresh material from the four-piece.
JOOKLO ZAPPA
ROME, IT
Wed 11:00pm - Wine-Ohs
JOOKLO ZAPPA’s frenetic free jazz approach is
propelled by the unhinged dual saxophones of
Virginia Genta and Stanley Zappa (nephew of
Frank Zappa) and the primal drumming of David
Vanzan. Together, they create a demented cacophony
that ably straddles the boundaries of tonality
and rhythm.
JUNGLEPUSSY
BROOKLYN, NY
**PEACHES PICK**
Thu 11:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Junglepussy’s percussive and head-turning beats
make quite the impact. She confidently spits catchy
and often humorous rap ballads about self-love,
female power and sexuality. Sound like anyone you
know? It’s no wonder Peaches picked her.
KAYTRANADA
MONTREAL, QC
Fri 11:00pm - Flames Central
Kaytranada is one of the most in-demand producers
of the moment. His production style has
old-school influence with a distinct electronic bent,
and his prolific output has cemented him as one
of the most exciting young producers in the game.
His hazy boom-bap beats can be heard on albums
from the likes of Vic Mensa, Mick Jenkins and
Anderson .Paak. Many of his esteemed collaborators
appear on his stunning debut album for XL
Recordings, 99.9%, a work that has solidified his
place among the production elite.
KIM GRAY
VANCOUVER, BC
Thu 12:00am - Bamboo
Sat 1:00pm - Broken City
Much like the surf-stompers of Kim Gray’s other
outfit, Skinny Kids, his solo work keeps the reverb
buzzing, but at a decidedly mellowed pace. The
latest single off his forthcoming debut solo LP,
“Perfume Ghost,” is a surf-psych sedative with
traces of doo-wop. Spritz gently and bask in the
lo-fi mist.
KISO ISLAND
VANCOUVER, BC
Wed 7:30pm - Broken City (Patio)
Fri 11:40pm - Tubby Dog
Named for an ill-reviewed Mount Pleasant sushi
joint, Kiso Island is a Pacific Northwest power-pop
band that actually pops. A brand-new all-star trio
featuring members of Jo Passed, Redrick Sultan
and TV Ugly, they oscillate between cute melodies
and angsty shrieking, all the while putting the
bounce in your pogo.
L.A. FOSTER
MONTREAL, QC
Fri 10:00pm - Flames Central
L.A. Foster’s soulful vocals and eclectic dance
beats make for a melodic combination. Her latest
release Saudade was produced by Stephen Ramsay
(of Young Galaxy). Both artists make melancholy
dance music, although dancing in the crowd at this
show will melt your troubles away.
L.T.LEIF
CALGARY, AB
Tue 9:00pm - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
L.T.LEIF is the latest nom de plume of enduring
Calgary performer Laura Leif. Her idiosyncratic
folk-pop is a heavenly coo wrapped in ukulele
plucks and droning soundscapes. Working her
music magic solo, or banging away behind a drum
kit with her scrappy cohorts HexRay, it’s no matter.
Leif brings effortless sweetness to whatever she
touches.
LAB COAST
CALGARY, AB
Wed 7:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Thu 10:30pm - Broken City
This five-piece created by Chris Dadge and David
Laing has humble beginnings rooted in lunch
hours working at the paint store and taking walks
in the park. Exposed and wistful, Lab Coast has expanded
to involve more instrumentals (including
sax, percussion and violin) to add to their tried
and true home recording techniques. Their pop is
part dreamy lo-fi fairy dust, part forthright melody.
Their latest album, Remember The Moon, is timed
perfectly to set off your summer.
LAFAWNDAH
BROOKLYN, NY
**PEACHES PICK**
Sat 9:30pm - Flames Central
Ever a citizen and student of the globe, Lafawndah
makes eclectic club music that bends geography
to her will. Her rhythms and vocal delivery take
cues from far-reaching styles, synthesizing a new
frontier of borderless electronic bangers. Her last
EP for Warp Records, Tan, is a trip through the
world’s best dancefloors that doesn’t require you
to move an inch.
LAND OF TALK
MONTREAL, QC
Sat 6:50pm - Olympic Plaza
Elizabeth Powell’s gorgeous songwriting, backed
up by some of the heaviest of heavy hitters in
indie rock (Stars, Arcade Fire, Silver Mt. Zion) lent
the lush pop of 2010’s Cloak and Cipher the grand
orchestration (and occasional riff!) it deserved.
Their return from hiatus is as welcome as the first
breath of spring, if spring were great live and had
more strings.
GUIDED BY VOICES
DAYTON, OH
Sat 9:30pm - Olympic Plaza
The return of “the greatest rock & roll band of the modern era.” Sure, truth may
not always be at the top of the priority list for White House Press Secretaries,
but when Obama’s right-hand man Jay Carney famously said it, it kind of felt
like we were all on the same page, didn’t it?
A lot of ink has been spilled on Guided By Voices’ prolific output since schoolteacher
Robert Pollard formed the band in the early ‘80s—over 500 songs credited
to the band and over 1,600 to Pollard himself—but not nearly enough has been
spent expounding just how many of them are untouchable. Perfect two-minute
(and under) pop gems with equal roots in the British Invasion, punk, post-punk,
psychedelic rock and indie styles, all wrapped in the trademark GBV lo-fi aesthetic;
a musician’s and music fan’s band, through and through.
In 2004, to pay tribute to an undeniably great band on their farewell tour, over
ten cities in the United States declared a Guided By Voices day. So, with their
2016 new lineup marking Sled Island’s 10-year anniversary…what do you say,
MUSIC
LATE SPRING
VANCOUVER, BC
Wed 11:00pm - Broken City
It makes sense that Late Spring would release a
new album in May. Invisible features fuzzy pop
songs that are gentle but insistent, made up of
placid vocals and guitar that flits between grunge,
psych and dream pop. We’re excited to see their
new songs bloom on stage at the festival.
LATEX HONEY GLOVE
VANCOUVER, BC
Thu 10:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Sadomasochism applies to every part of Latex
Honey Glove. Their punishing electronic programming
and hypersexual dynamic reimagine the
role of the entertainer as a dominator. They call it
transformative BDSM, we call it a stage show that
brings danger to the forefront.
LINE TRAPS
VICTORIA, BC
Sat 7:30pm - Broken City
Line Traps, comprised of P. Ethelyne, T. Depression
and General Debris, have rightfully drawn comparisons
to ‘90s-era Rip Off Records artists. With their
own contemporary spin on those touchstones, they
deliver gloriously skuzzed-out, ramshackle punk
that’ll spin you off your axis.
LOST CREATURES
MONTREAL, QC
Thu 12:00am - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
Lost Creatures’ otherworldly pop and underwater
moodiness make for an effervescent and colourful
amalgamation of danceable romance. They’ve
bubbled up from the depths of magical Montreal
crying tears of glitter while making more than a
few people dance.
LOVEWAVES
CALGARY, AB
Fri 12:30am - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
The artists formerly known as The Pygmies have
changed their name, but what’s always made them
great remains firmly intact. High-kicking high-tops
and the most soulful take on the Nuggets aesthetic
this side of The Reigning Sound are their stock in
trade. You’ll be so busy swinging your hips you
won’t even notice how deep their waters run.
LUCID 44
CALGARY, AB
Fri 9:00pm - Wine-Ohs
Markus Overland has been grinding away at his
low-key lo-fi project Lucid 44 since the early ‘90s.
Swinging between tender country crooners and
noise-rock burners (sometimes in the same song),
Overland’s constant hallmark is a tense introversion
that implies a lot more than it says.
LUNATIQUE
CALGARY, AB
Fri 10:40pm - Tubby Dog
Chaos to many, perfect sense to some, Lunatique’s
noisy approach to punk is a welcome blast in the face.
Shrieks, freakouts and feedback are all to be expected.
Do yourself a favour and don’t forget earplugs.
LUNG CANCER
CALGARY, AB
Sat 7:15pm - Tubby Dog
Since 2013, Lung Cancer has been exploring the
extreme sides of crust punk. With a few tours under
their belt and a split with noise-grind legends
Sete Star Sept, they’ve hit the sweet spot of radical
lyrical content and punishing screams. Their Sled
Island debut ought to be abrasive, challenging
and exciting.
MALUCA
NEW YORK, NY
**PEACHES PICK**
Fri 11:30pm - The Hifi Club
Maluca takes her stage name from the Spanish and
Portuguese slang for "bad girl." It checks out—her
massive club tunes mine the Caribbean and surrounding
tropical regions for all the best riddims to
be found south of the equator, and Maluca herself
is not someone to mess with. She’s made toughas-nails
bangers for the likes of Diplo and Future
Brown, and latest single "Mala" has us ready for a
heat wave in June.
MAN FOREVER
BROOKLYN, NY
Thu 11:30pm - Wine-Ohs
Oneida’s Kid Millions (née John Colpitts) drums
like he’s got eight arms, but eight’s not quite
enough to express the million ideas bursting
from his brain. Man Forever is his solo project,
originally conceived as a vehicle to perform
a drums-only rendition of Lou Reed’s Metal
Machine Music, though it has evolved into a way
of testing the very limits of what drums and
drummers can do.
MARK ADAM
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:30pm - The Hifi Club
Mark Adam is kind of all over the place, and
we mean that in a good way. He’s got experience
in house, ambient, footwork and techno
under a plethora of pseudonyms. The versatile
producer also has a hand in the 420 TRILL$TREAK
web label, and has promised to hone in on the
intersection of footwork and German techno at
Sled Island.
HEALTH
LOS ANGELES, CA
Thu 12:00am - Dickens
The punishingly loud riot act read by HEALTH during Sled Island 2009
brought audiences gleefully to their knees. A lot has changed since then,
but the band’s impact remains the devastating same. They’ve since expanded
their position in the spider’s web of terrifying noise and mechanized
dance music to a colossal level, with the hi-def industrial of latest album
DEATH MAGIC as proof.
HEALTH draws from ritualism both on their recordings and in their live
approach. Drums pound until all thought ends, vocals are delivered mantra-style,
and a switch-and-bait interplay of dissonance and melody swims
all around the listener. It isn’t unlike machinegun fire as therapy.
Good old fashioned racket is the madness, and the release it offers is
the method. HEALTH offers the rare chance to fully lose one’s self to an
alternate mayhem than that of everyday living. They confront you with the
power of frazzled electronics and angular edges. They offer peace with a
logic-defying mastery of disorder and rhythm.
Ask anyone who’s been to a HEALTH show and they’ll agree: it’s a sensation
so incorruptible that it defies the confines of words. Without need for logic
or explanation, HEALTH leads its parish to a place of unholy commune,
where reason is only in the power of being there to feel something.
about the inner demons so many of us have.
Cheerily titled tracks like “You’ll Absolutely Die”
Fri 1:00am - Palomino (Upstairs)
Sun 4:00pm - Central Memorial Park
These Sled Island vets are back and ready to take
on the festival with sweaty sincerity. Celebrated
and prolific drummer Papi Fimbres hits a spread
of Latin-inspired rhythms in over 24 running projects.
No less impressive, guitarist Carlos Segovia
and bassist Theo Craig mess with rhythm and riff
to meet somewhere between surf and cumbia music.
The trio jams out goliath instrumental tracks
that are as heady as they are physical.
MASKS
CALGARY, AB
Fri 8:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Sat 7:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Hide under the covers if you must. MASKS’ unrelenting
species of post-punk is dead set on rattling
Not too long ago, MAXJULLIAN left his home in
linking with Calgary producer A.Y.E., he had one
of the breakout performances at Sled Island 2015.
His flow is on point, the production straddles
cloud rap and classics, and he never veers from a
relatable narrative.
CALGARY, AB
Wed 8:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Fri 11:30pm - Dickens
A fresh throwback to ‘80s new wave, Melted
Mirror are a mixture of synth and drum machines
destined to be played in the passenger seat of a
DeLorean as the sun sets. If you close your eyes
and listen intently, fluorescent stars may flood the
backs of your eyeballs.
MERGANZER
OTTAWA, ON
Thu 7:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND
Accomplished violinist and multi-instrumentalist
Mika Posen has a knack for slow-burning,
pop-noir storytelling. Using her own invention,
the “mikatron,” Posen accompanies her lingering
whispers with stirring baroque accompaniment
for atmospheric pop songs that are timeless and
enchanting.
METAFLOOR
CALGARY, AB
Wed 10:30pm - The Hifi Club
MetaFloor is a multi-genre electronic music producer
in Calgary, AB. Largely focused on minimalist,
bass driven tunes, he has played throughout
Western Canada’s rich bass music scene, including
sets at festivals like Shambhala. Also a community
organizer as part of the Sub Chakra crew, he
definitely knows how to throw a party.
MILK TOAST
CALGARY, AB
Thu 10:00pm - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Sat 2:00pm - Tubby Dog
Milk Toast are an unapologetically twee band that
make the dreamiest pop you’ll hear at Sled Island.
2015’s Your Band Sucks & Punk’s Dead showcased
the band in peak form, but it’s their charming
live show that has kept them in the hearts of
Calgarians.
MITCHMATIC
EDMONTON, AB
Wed 12:00am - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Mitchmatic’s multifaceted abilities as an MC,
musician and producer are crucial components
of the stuttering beats, clever lyrics and esoteric
sampling that define his hip-hop sound. One of
the core members of Edmonton’s Old Ugly crew, he
has consistently raised his game to higher levels
with each of his releases.
MONROEVILLE MUSIC CENTRE
CALGARY, AB
Thu 12:30am - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Monroeville Music Centre is a thoroughly conceptualized
musical project that is also a fictional
institute for outsider music. Sounding not unlike
waking up to an infomercial at 3am in the ‘80s,
MMC offers a surreal journey through imagined
nostalgia.
MOON KING
TORONTO, ON
Fri 12:30am - Broken City
Sat 3:20pm - Olympic Plaza
Moon King revolves around the duo of Daniel Benjamin
(ex-Spiral Beach, past touring member for
Grimes, Sean Nicholas Savage and Doldrums) and
Maddy Wilde. The pair’s debut album Secret Life
showcases dual vocals atop tensely wound indie
pop coloured with flecks of krautrock and psych.
On stage, the tracks come to life with the band’s
ecstatic stage presence.
MOTHS & LOCUSTS
VICTORIA, BC
Sat 10:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
MOTHS & LOCUSTS are like the bastard child of
consciousness-altering psych and unhinged prog-
JULIA HOLTER
VAL VERDE, CA
Thu 10:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND
Julia Holter has been making left-field pop music over the
span of four albums, including her 2013 breakthrough
Loud City Song. While that album used the 1958 musical
Gigi as a spiritual framework, Holter’s latest venture
Have You In My Wilderness is the singer’s most accessible
release to date. Gone are the overarching narratives and
heady concepts. Instead, Holter turns in confessional pop
stunners like lead single “Feel You.”
The strings and orchestral elements that appeared on
Loud City Song return, but Holter doesn’t let them overpower.
Instead, all of the ornate instrumentation serves to
bolster Holter’s already irresistible voice. It floats between
a Nico-esque baritone and a popstar in hiding, switching
between the two effortlessly. Even more impressive is the
fact that Holter and her band manage to translate her
decadent songs live.
Sled Island 2016

ock, with just the right combination of riffs and
freakouts thrown in. The band takes wild journeys
through a galaxy of smoked-out rock ‘n’ roll while
keeping their consistent grooves firmly terrestrial.
MUJAHEDEEN
PORTLAND, OR
Sat 4:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Sun 2:00pm - Central Memorial Park
Beginning as a solo electronic musician, Ali Muhareb
released a couple of EPs and embarked on a
number of tours on his own. Recently enlisting the
help of Carlos Segovia (of Máscaras) and longtime
musical collaborator Denis Rickard, the project
has evolved into Mujahedeen, a three-piece rock
outfit influenced by everything from NW indie rock
to post-hardcore punk, psychedelic cumbia and
Ethiopian jazz.
N3K
EDMONTON, AB
Wed 10:00pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Taking their cues from esoteric jazz/hip-hop crossover
artists like Robert Glasper, N3K’s instrumental
jazz-funk finds its roots in improvisation. Their
unspoken chemistry naturally results in a deep
groove that progresses from mellow, ambient triphop
into spacey dance floor bangers.
NEW BOMB TURKS
COLUMBUS, OH
Sat 12:30am - Dickens
26 years, four record labels and nine albums later,
New Bomb Turks have lost none of their explosiveness,
ripping out their disheveled punk rock
with the vivacity of teenagers. Years of experience
aside, true-to-form anti-establishment attitudes
and barrels of sweaty stage-dancing have sanded
off any unwanted polish, maintaining all the grit
and rough edges necessary for an electrifying
punk experience.
NICOLAS FIELD
CALGARY, AB / TORONTO, ON
Wed 5:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Sat 1:00pm - Local 510
Nicolas Field has been on the Calgary and
Toronto music scenes for some time, notably as
the lead guitarist in the post-hardcore band La
Luna. His solo work takes a more stripped down,
folk-inspired approach, creating a dreamy solo
performance just with his soft, melodic lyrics and
acoustic guitar.
NIGHT COMMITTEE
CALGARY, AB
Fri 11:30pm - Ship & Anchor
Close your eyes and imagine your favorite literary
or cinematic moment. Now ask yourself, “Would
this be made better with fireworks?” If you answered
“Yes, of course!” then do yourself a favour
and join in on this anthemic, chaotic rock ‘n’ roll.
NO HANDS
WINDSOR, ON
Fri 2:30pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Sat 8:00pm - Tubby Dog
Like mournful cats in an alley, Windsor’s No Hands
wail over droning guitar riffs in the style of traditional,
pummeling hardcore. The four-piece share
vocal duties and come out sounding ripped and
raw. They’re almost certain to leave you bruised
from the mosh pit the next day.
NO RIVER
CALGARY, AB
Wed 10:00pm - Ship & Anchor
Sat 3:00pm - Central Memorial Park
It’s one year later and we still can’t stop listening
to last June’s Katie’s Kitchen. No River has a well
earned reputation as one of the most entertaining
roots acts in Calgary. Dipping between country,
indie rock and pop, the band always finds the right
sounds to carry their storytelling home.
NOBABY
CALGARY, AB
Wed 7:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Fri 9:30pm - Broken City
From the ashes of Calgary faves Vailhalen comes
this introspective, intricate pop project. That’s
not to say it’s all quiet stuff, though. Their latest
release has bright flourishes like handclaps and
humming synth, and ever-enigmatic frontman
Chris Vail leads the songs with compelling charm.
NORWEGIAN ICEBREAKER
CALGARY, AB
Sat 9:00pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Heavy as hell punk quartet Norwegian Icebreaker
MUSIC
have been described as “the loudest band in
Calgary.” In addition to having the primal power of
volume on their side, the band breaks into noisy
experimentation that adds a level of thoughtfulness
to the maelstrom. With just one song on
Bandcamp to date, you’ll have to see them in
person to really get your fix.
NUMENOREAN
CALGARY, AB
Fri 10:30pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Sat 12:00am - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Rarely does a first demo earn a band instant,
massive loyalty. Numenorean’s two longform
post-black metal tracks from 2014 are staggeringly
emotional and dynamic. Sometimes brutish but
often contemplative, the band is set to explore the
limits of metal even further on a forthcoming LP
for the Season of Mist label.
OAKK
CALGARY, AB
Wed 11:30pm - The Hifi Club
Thu 4:00pm - Sled Island Block Party
This beatmaker/Noctilux Collective affiliate is
known for his sultry blend of downtempo and bass
music. A consistent output of post-EDM singles
and emotionally affective performances have kept
OAKK’s name on Calgarians’ lips.
OKPK
VICTORIA, BC
Fri 11:30pm - Bamboo
Whip-cracking beats, spare atmospheres and
delirious bass are the main weapons in okpk’s
chest. His minimalist tracks can veer from brutal
beat lacerations to malfunctioning VHS static from
moment to moment. Whether you dance along or
let the assault overpower you, you won’t walk away
from okpk without a major reaction.
OLD GIRL
VICTORIA, BC
Thu 10:00pm - Dickens
Old Girl’s lo-fi electro-pop suits rainy days spent
looking out the window. Her work faces intersections
between frank inner thought, coming of age
and an odd assortment of memories. The results
are dreamy, soothsaying tales that linger in your
memory long after the sun comes back out.
MUSIC
ONEIDA
BROOKLYN, NY
Wed 10:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
One of the great bands of the new millennium,
Brooklyn's kings of psych and drone have been
exploring propulsion and repetition for nearly
twenty years, lighting the way for a generation
of young Kraut-noise artists. Anchored by Kid
Millions' Olympic-calibre drumming, their shows
might be comprised of ethereal pulses, majestic
long-form jams or pummeling squalls of feedback.
Whatever they pull out of their grimy pockets, it
will be a heavy trip.
ORTHICON
CALGARY, AB
Thu 10:00pm - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
Orthicon is the audio-visual performance project
of Bryce Maruk. A longtime practitioner of video
manipulation and media arts, Maruk synthesizes
the two disciplines with warm, emotive electro-pop
for performances that intertwine the senses while
still being accessible.
PAINTED FRUIT
VICTORIA, BC
Thu 1:00am - Bamboo
Sat 3:00pm - Tubby Dog
Painted Fruit weave post-punk with West Coast
beach rock to create a collection that fits somewhere
between a basement and the seaside.
Their jangly chords and poetic lyrics will have you
swaying and singing along.
PALE LIPS
MONTREAL, QC
Fri 1:30pm - Broken City
Fri 11:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Got a sweet tooth? Pale Lips are the jolt of
candy-coated power-pop you need. A sugar rush
of buoyant, blown-out guitar riffs and bubblegum
vocals, this fierce Montreal combo delivers sloppy-sweet
rock ‘n’ roll with sprinkles that’ll mess
with your mind and make you come back for more.
PARTICIPATION
LETHBRIDGE, AB
Wed 9:30pm - Local 510
Angular in all the right ways, Participation have
found success by keeping their take on post-punk
simple and direct. Their music is shrouded in bratty,
lo-fi dissonance with chugging drums and hectic,
interwoven guitar lines that beg to be heard again
and again.
PARTNER
SACKVILLE, NB
Wed 12:00am - Broken City
Thu 9:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Clever, to the point, sweet and killer fun; Lucy Niles
and Josee Caron know how to write catchy lyrics.
While they’ve only released two short songs so far,
they pack every second with deadpan humour and
crunchy guitar hooks. On “All our knives are hot
knives,” they sing in a bubble bath, beers in hand.
More famously, “The ‘Ellen’ Page” features a cameo
by the star in its video. Page air guitars the sick solo
from the climax, and soon you will, too.
PEACHES
BERLIN, DE
Sat 11:30pm - Flames Central
“The boys wanna be her. The girls wanna
be her. I wanna be her… So do you!”
So go the lyrics to just one of Peaches’
empowering and endlessly listenable
songs. This has grown to be an apt
description for the larger-than-life artist
herself. In the 16 years she’s been
releasing albums under this name, the
icon born Merrill Nisker has bared it all—
both literally and figuratively. Primarily
using rhymes and electronic beats, she
is never beholden to anything but her
own irresistible swagger and unabashed
body politics.
Throughout her life she’s worn many hats. Leaving behind a career as a librarian, Peaches has used
music, film, theatre and many other disciplines to challenge and delight the public on identity issues
including sex, gender and power. What makes this all so important is that she has proven that liberating
yourself (and getting pissed off at the systems that aim to inhibit us) can be a hell of a lot of fun.
From the pervasive power of Teaches of Peaches single “Fuck the Pain Away” to the recent sexually-celebrant
title track of Rub, Peaches has never ceased to push as hard as she can to destroy the barriers that
keep expression of self in line. She’s a provocateur and a punk, an assault and an icon. She’s the loudest
voice with the most to say. For these reasons and so many more, Sled Island is proud to collaborate with
her in the role of guest curator.
MUSIC
PEARS
NEW ORLEANS, LA
Sat 12:30am - Palomino (Upstairs)
Furious energy and a nonstop jolt of adrenaline
characterize the speed freak hardcore of PEARS.
Reminiscent of classic skate-punk, with edges
of dark metal, their guitar harmonies and low,
rumbling vocals are an unrelenting blast of manic
punk exhilaration.
PEOPLE OF THE NORTH
BROOKLYN, NY
Thu 5:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
If Oneida just isn’t experimental or repetitive
enough for you, you’re going to dig the hell out
of their side project. Centered around Oneida’s
drummer John “Kid Millions” Colpitts and organist
“Fat Bobby” Matador, the atmospheric, conceptual
improv of People of the North is uncompromising
in its commitment to the moment—brilliant, cryptic
and intense.
PHYSICAL COPIES
EDMONTON, AB
Wed 11:30pm - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Lovingly embodying and winking at the ‘80s,
Physical Copies make seriously infectious nü
romantic tunes that pack the dancefloor and tug
at the heart strings. Made up of members of Shout
Out Out Out Out, the band comes with a certain
electropop pedigree and really strut their synthy
stuff on Sweety Pie Records release The Weird Boys
Are Here!
PIGEON BREEDERS
EDMONTON, AB
Thu 10:30pm - Wine-Ohs
Dubbed “experimental eagles,” Pigeon Breeders
ask you to jump on a wing and hold on tight. Guitar,
vocals, synthesizer and a variety of percussion
objects are configured into a chaotic, freeform
listening experience. Sit back, relax and let the
spastic arrangements permeate you.
PINNER
VICTORIA, BC
Fri 1:00pm - Sloth Records
Sun 8:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
What pinner lack in fidelity, they make up for in
deadpan slacker personality. There’s no question
that they can play—their crusty recordings star
quick changeups of adrenaline-triggering instrumentation
and frankly casual twin vocals. It’s the
sound of confident slackers who know their way
around loud, fast rock ‘n’ roll.
PLANNINGTOROCK
BERLIN, DE
**PEACHES PICK**
Fri 10:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND
Jam Rolston gender-bends and pieces together an
ever-fluctuating self, using flagrant, hip-shaking
beats to bash back at societal expectations surrounding
gender and sexuality. Modifying her face
with prosthetics, Rolston cultivates an otherworldly
quality to compose electronic hooks that come
from classically trained roots. Having collaborated
with The Knife and Mt. Sims, Planningtorock
mounts concepts as tasty melodic attacks complete
with fluid video artwork.
THE PLODES
CALGARY, AB
Sat 6:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
Taking the abrasive, high-energy herky-jerk of
early XTC and Devo as a starting point, The Plodes
were “hatched from a dog’s egg, put in a man’s
pocket.” Their truckloads of two-minute, two-chord
songs about the myriad denizens of the animal
kingdom are the perfect soundtrack to your pogo
workout.
PMMA
CALGARY, AB
Sat 11:30pm - Dickens
PMMA keep all the classic elements of punk in
play while twisting in delightfully dank nuances.
Synth, psychotropic obsession and themes of
escape ride over the hammer of guitar, bass and
drums. With plenty of touring and an LP on Imminent
Destruction, PMMA are in their freaky prime.
POSTMAN
CALGARY, AB
Fri 4:30pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Sat 9:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Postman has a somewhat gothic take on punk music,
sounding a bit like they’re playing inside an
underwater cave. Made up of members of Empty
Heads, PMMA, Shattered and The Nancees, their
exploration of punk and post-punk comes from an
experienced vantage point.
POWER-BUDDIES
EDMONTON, AB
Thu 7:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Fri 10:00pm - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Dripping in reverb with gritty Gretsch twang and
set to sashaying Bo Diddley beats, Power-Buddies
answer the question, “What if Iggy Pop had been
around for the first era of rock ‘n’ roll?” Imbued
with a sense of mild nihilism that perfectly
contrasts their penchant for sweetness, the trio
brings easy-going smiles to their brand of sassy
sing-along rock jams.
PRE NUP
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:30pm - Broken City (Patio)
Sat 5:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Pre Nup is a relatively new band made up of members
of dearly missed Calgary band Grown-Ups.
Originally intended as a “wimpy” project, they
somehow stumbled into making loud and fast pop
songs, including a joint EP release for Kingfisher
Bluez and Debt Offensive Records. On stage, members
of Lab Coast round out their sound.
PREPARED
CALGARY, AB
Fri 9:30pm - Ship & Anchor
Kevin Stebner plays in more bands simultaneously
than most musicians do in a lifetime. Prepared is
his current outlet for shouty, jagged yet swinging
post-harcore that slaughters apathy. Giving it every
ounce and then some, Stebner is the conscience of
the DIY dream that will not die.
PRESTON
EDMONTON, AB
Wed 6:30pm - John Dutton Theatre
Fri 9:00pm - Tubby Dog
What goes through your head as you walk the
streets alone at night? Preston takes mundane,
everyday thoughts and carefully blankets them in
lo-fi garage-rock, allowing us to intimately peer
into her bored yet hopeful psyche. It’s a celebration
of mediocrity in the most charming and
curious way possible.
THE SETH BOGART SHOW
LOS ANGELES, CA
Thu 1:00am - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Fri 3:00pm - Broken City (Patio) (DJ Set)
Seth Bogart returns to Sled Island on the heels of a romping
lo-fi pop record. Having wowed audiences in 2011 as Hunx and
his Punx, the charismatic showman now stands on his own with
a collection that warps pain with pleasure and sincerity with
absurdity. Bogart has gained notoriety for his subversion of
tropes in punk, ‘60s girl groups and pop art. Past guest curator
Kathleen Hanna is a noted fan, and her bratty turn on freaky
single “Eating Makeup” somehow fits perfectly alongside tender
laments about Bogart’s own fragility. With so many notches
on his belt and a new creative stride, we’re expecting big things
from him at the festival.
MUSIC
PROTOMARTYR
DETROIT, MI
Wed 11:45pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Thu 8:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
PROTOMARTYR make poetic post-punk that is every
bit as personal as it is powerful. 2015’s The Agent
Intellect is the band’s third album in three years. It
also happens to be their best. Frontman Joe Casey
is a classic everyman, fed up with his surroundings
and tired of the status quo. He spits his lyrics like
venom as the band rips through their unique
blend of angular, dissonant post-punk.
PSYCHIC TV
NEW YORK, NY
Fri 12:30am - Dickens
Uncontent to rattle the world just once with
industrial originators Throbbing Gristle, Genesis
Breyer P-Orridge formed Psychic TV in the early
1980s. For more than two decades, the group has
prolifically experimented their way through acid
house, psych-rock and so many other genres that
they’ve nabbed Guinness World Book of Records
recognition for most records released in a single
year. Ever unpredictable and astonishing, expect a
consuming performance from Psychic TV.
PYRAMID//INDIGO
EDMONTON, AB
Tue 8:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Thu 9:30pm - Wine-Ohs
Pyramid//Indigo improvises with processed guitar,
keyboard, theremin, spoken word and electronics
to produce bold experimental soundscapes that can
evoke a range of feelings—anything from eeriness
that you can’t shake off, to undergoing a deep spiritual
experience. With the music left open to interpretation,
come along and choose your own adventure.
QUAKER PARENTS
HALIFAX, NS/MONTREAL, QC
Sat 2:30pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Sun 3:00pm - Central Memorial Park
A little ragged, but never unprepared, Quaker Parents
are everything you want in an East by East Coast band.
They can play as well they can convey the written
word, and that’s very well indeed. Sled Island regulars
won’t be strangers to Mark Grundy or the group as a
whole, but even casuals should expect a new bout of
intensity from the ever-conversational band.
THE RADIATION FLOWERS
SASKATOON, SK
Sat 2:35pm - Olympic Plaza
Reaching into the cosmic frequencies of Spacemen
3 and the drowned-in-sound aspirations of
The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Radiation Flowers
construct expansive psych-rock arrangements.
Mesmerizing like the colourful floating globs of a
lava lamp, their brand of psych is warm and gooey.
RADIOACTIVITY
DENTON, TX
Sat 8:30pm - Broken City
Sun 8:30pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Radioactivity are a continuation of Jeff Burke’s
mission to make short, searing blasts of garage-punk
that are salty as a firecracker and sweet
as a cherry bomb. Burke’s days in game-changers
The Marked Men may be behind him, but his
arsenal is still full to bursting.
RAYLEIGH
EDMONTON, AB
Sat 9:00pm - Tubby Dog
Rayleigh make emotive hardcore that moves a mile a
minute, packing more riffs into one song than most
bands manage on a full album. Instead of using brute
force, Rayleigh use sophisticated syncopation and an
ear for melody to convey their majestic maelstrom.
RESPECTFULCHILD
SASKATOON, SK
Thu 9:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND
Fri 2:00pm - Tubby Dog
It’s amazing what can be done with a loop pedal.
Melissa Gan’s work as respectfulchild is built on
violin loops that are as hallucinatory as they are
heavenly. While recent output is mostly sketches
and demos, Gan’s live performance is fully fleshed
out and ready to capture your heart.
RUBIX
CALGARY, AB
Wed 8:30pm - Tubby Dog
The rapper’s name is an acronym meaning Resilience
Under Burden Inspires eXcellence. Fittingly,
his lyrics touch on thriving under struggle and
rising above limitations. Inspirational beats ride
high over funky, old school-indebted production
that keeps the warmth of the past alive while
dreaming of the future.
RUSTY MEEKS VS. ESETTE
CALGARY, AB
Thu 10:00pm - The HiFi Club
Esette appeared last year at the Sled Island Block
Party as Isis Graham and has only gotten better
since. Rusty Meeks is one of her partners in crime
at Substation Records. Put ‘em together and you
have a pair of formidable DJs with plenty of experience
behind the decks.
SARGEANT AND COMRADE
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:30pm - Tubby Dog
Fri 3:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Fri 9:30pm - The Hifi Club
R&B and soul singer Yolanda Sargeant and rapper-producer
Evgeniy Bykovets come together to
create as a duo that infuses jazz, soul and trip-hop
into a something completely different. Sargeant’s
rich vocals take the listener on a modern journey
back to the golden age of soul music.
SBDC
VANCOUVER, BC
Sat 7:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
Everything about SBDC is springy and impossible
THE SONICS
TACOMA, WA
Fri 1:00am - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
If any band was proto-proto-punk, it was The Sonics. As early as 1960, they
were playing garage-rock standards of the day like Richard Berry’s “Have Love,
Will Travel” and the seminal “Louie, Louie,” but harder, faster, dirtier. Their own
songs were about girls, surfing, cars, witches, drinking strychnine, psychopaths
and Satan, and have been covered by Bruce Springsteen, The Flaming Lips,
The Fall, The Cramps and L7. They recorded their drums with one microphone
and a two-track recorder—Kurt Cobain called the results “most amazing drum
sound I’ve ever heard.” Remember the LCD Soundsystem song “Losing My
Edge,” where James Murphy lists all of his favorite bands? He says The Sonics
four times.
Earlier this year, they released their first new material in 49 years: the album
This Is The Sonics. The album is as raw and nasty as anything recorded in their
‘60s heyday. Singer and keyboardist Jerry Roslie has a voice—a howl—that would
make vocalists a quarter of his age jealous. More impressive still, they released
the album on their own label and are touring extensively. They’re already your
favorite band’s favorite band, and everything that made them so influential
and so vital to modern music is still intact.
Sled Island 2016

to ignore. The four-piece jumps in and out of clever
lyrics to ricochet off hooks with stanch, stubborn
energy. Pretty Shitty runs through short songs that
are sharply to the point.
SCHOOLGIRL
VICTORIA, BC
Fri 3:00pm - Local 510
Sat 11:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
SCHOOLGIRL has a lot in common with your average
schoolgirl, if your average schoolgirl is more
loud, experimental and abrasive than The Ex’s
1987 album Too Many Cowboys. These noise mavens
take your standard rock ‘n’ roll instruments
and run them through a meat grinder.
SEVERED FEATHERS
PETERBOROUGH, ON
Wed 9:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Riding the wave of either a) some interstellar
transmission or b) some gnarly curls, these young
“space hippies” seem to have one foot in the stars
and one in the surf. Only whip-sharp drumming
tethers them from floating away to Arcturus on a
foamy raft of reverb and echo.
SHATTERED
CALGARY, AB
Thu 11:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Shattered’s fast and commanding music exists on
a razor sharp edge. These dynamos get straight to
the point with their precise, pounding waves of
no bullshit post-punk, equipped with piercing yet
distant vocals, sharp feedbacked guitars, heavy
bass grooves and distorted analog synths.
SHEARING PINX
VANCOUVER, BC
Wed 12:00am - Bamboo
Thu 10:00pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Vancouver’s Shearing Pinx are over a decade deep
in the no wave void with a prolific 50 releases
and counting to their name. Invoking a visceral
intensity akin to cannonballing into a drum set,
the band’s pummeling, freeform punk eschews
the limits of structure, while feeding the need to
groove with dissonance.
SHITLORD FUCKERMAN
VANCOUVER, BC
Thu 9:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
An obliterating assault of synth noise and blown
out beats with cues from chiptune and punk, the
gloriously named shitlord fuckerman brings the
right kind of pain. Tracks like “david lynch’s pro
skater 4” and “return to anus island” are great
examples of expert trolling that actually yield
weirdo good times.
THE SHIVERETTES
CALGARY, AB
Wed 7:30pm - John Dutton Theatre
Sun 6:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Coming out swinging hard, The Shiverettes are
unabashed snotty punks with an agenda. They
specialize in short, loud bursts of guitar and
drum-driven old school punk rock with hollered
vocals. We credit them with overturning the gov-
MUSIC
ernment after their flexi “Stephen Harper, Suck My
Dick” made waves last October.
SHOOTING GUNS
SASKATOON, SK
Fri 11:30pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Sat 12:30am - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Ultra-heavy stoner riffs drag the listener into a
hypnotic state, like spinning a wordless Mötorhead
at 16 RPM. Shooting Guns’ six members throw
themselves headlong into their primal drop-D
psych-metal as though they’re wrecking an ocean
liner on an iceberg. There’s no resisting the commitment
these Kraut-influenced sludge-slingers
invest into every filthy note.
SHOTGUN JIMMIE
SACKVILLE, NB
Thu 10:00pm - Ship & Anchor
Fri 12:00am - Wine-Ohs
Whether solo or touring with a full band, Shotgun
Jimmie is effortlessly charming, playing the kind
of concise, heartfelt guitar pop that soundtracks
first dates, weird dreams, trips to the midway or
just a good ol’ sunny day. It gets said often, but
probably not nearly enough: Shotgun Jimmie is a
national treasure and deserves his own stamp.
SIGHTLINES
VANCOUVER, BC
Fri 6:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
Sat 6:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Smart, catchy, thoughtful and sunny power-pop that
not only predates the pop-punk revival, but that's
tongue-in-cheek enough to have issued a limited
SINISTARR
DETROIT, MI
Thu 4:45pm - Sled Island Block Party
You know the club scene in Calgary is heating up
when one of Detroit’s best young producers moves
to town. Sinistarr works in heavily percussive, high
BPM styles of electronic music, including (but
not limited to) juke, footwork and drum and bass.
We’re excited to welcome this honorary Calgarian
to Sled Island 2016.
SINZERE SINGS
CALGARY, AB
Wed 10:30pm - Tubby Dog
Thu 9:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Sinzere Sings is savage on the mic. Her diss lines and
steely confidence are formidable, and are backed up
by a mix of intoxicating old school and lit contemporary
beats. When she isn’t shutting down other MCs
with her rhymes, Sinzere lives true to her name and
sings in a number of genres including dancehall.
SITSTILL
CALGARY, AB
Wed 9:00pm - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
They’re back! Remember that weird, wonderful
Factory Party at Sled Island 2011 with Andrew
W.K.? sitstill were there, making blissfully experimental
pop music hinging on the friction between
locked riffs and electronics. They’ve been out of
the game for a minute, begging the question why
here, why now? See for yourself this June.
SLEEPKIT
CALGARY, AB
Tue 10:00pm - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
Wed 11:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Sleepkit make the ideal soundtrack for robbing
a bank in intergalactic space. This four-piece’s
spacious ambience is created by layers of throbbing
synthesizers and filthy bass lines, coated
with playful vocals that beckon you to slam on the
accelerator and ascend to an alternate reality.
SLO DANCE
CALGARY, AB
Tue 9:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Sun 1:00pm - Central Memorial Park
A cheap read of Slo Dance would leap to other
contemporary R&B experimentalists, but there’s
something about this brand new act that urges the
listener to reckon with something unprecedented.
Kaleem Khan (Shaani Cage) has piercing vocals both
familiar and alien, and Evangelos Lambrinoudis II
provides an unsteady but enticing sub-woofin’ bass
foil that completes the project’s assured instability.
SMALLTOWN DJS
CALGARY, AB
Thu 4:00pm - Sled Island Block Party (Hosts)
Thu 12:00am - The Hifi Club
Partying to the sounds of Smalltown DJs is a Sled Island
tradition. The duo of Pete Emes and Mike Grimes
have travelled the world, working with top-level artists
like the Mad Decent and Fool’s Gold roster. Expect an
intense set of bangers with no genre restrictions.
SMOKE EATERS
VICTORIA, BC
Thu 10:00pm - Bamboo
Sat 4:00pm - Broken City
Smoke Eaters have a knack for making eclectic
earworms. The young Victoria-via-Calgary upstarts
released the jangly, off-kilter Bonnybrook Road in
May of last year and have been cruising steadily
forward ever since.
SPEEDY ORTIZ
NORTHHAMPTON, MA
Sat 4:20pm - Olympic Plaza
Sun 9:30pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Speedy Ortiz possesses big-tent rock swagger and
punk’s restless yet intimate spirit in a way that makes
the impulses seem identical; while the quartet can
still command crowds at festivals like Primavera
Sound and Pitchfork Music Festival, they also relish
playing Boston’s teeming basements alongside the
city’s next generation of bands. That willingness to
push not just forward, but in all directions, makes
Speedy Ortiz one of rock’s most exciting outfits.
SUBROSA
SALT LAKE CITY, UT
Fri 12:30am - Palomino (Downstairs)
Sat 5:00pm - Bamboo
A deep current of epic drama runs through the
sound of SubRosa. Aptly likened to “the coming
Sled Island 2016

apocalypse on the shoulders of forgotten gods,”
the dynamic tension and release of their roaring
experimental doom metal is complemented by the
towering intensity of twin violins.
SUNGLACIERS
CALGARY, AB
Wed 6:30pm - Broken City (Patio)
Sat 3:00pm - Broken City
Sunglaciers are making their Sled Island debut with
an offering of mind-bending, kaleidoscopic psychedelia.
The local three-piece are masters of heady
lo-fi pop tunes that are breezier than a summer’s
day float on the Bow.
SUPERMOON
VANCOUVER, BC
Fri 4:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Sat 2:00pm - Central Memorial Park
Supermoon are the sweetest method of persuasion.
They’re so good at hooks, they barely have to
try. Not that they don’t—this well-oiled four-piece
feigns simplicity when in fact they know pleasure-inducing
melodies over, under, sideways and
down. Big ol’ drums, lickety-split guitar and bass
riffs and perfectly plaintive vocals are all you need
to tide over your mid-eclipse munchies.
SWIM TEAM
VANCOUVER, BC
Sat 10:30pm - Ship & Anchor
Alternating between dreamy washes of propulsive
noise and breakneck military-grade punk, this
new Vancouver trio deliberately positions itself
between freedom and constraint, forthrightness
and obscurity. Speak-sung Kim Gordon-esque
vocals and sudden tempo and mood changes are
the band’s hallmarks.
SWITCHES
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 2:30pm - Broken City
Fri 10:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Edmonton favourites Switches are hitting Sled Island
after a year-long hiatus. Not to fret—there’ll be
no rust. Their gritty, go-go garage-punk energy will
only be cranked up by the time off, inducing manic
dance parties of the highest rock ‘n’ roll order.
THE SWITCHING YARD
SASKATOON, SK
Fri 4:00pm - Tubby Dog
Sat 4:00pm - Bamboo
The Switching Yard combine trippy, hypnotic
vocal melody with a massive rock sound. Their
clangorous, atmospheric hard rock is punctuated
by swirling dual guitars and a rhythm section that
hits like a landslide.
THE SYNTHETIQUES
CALGARY, AB
Fri 9:30pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
Sat 1:00pm - Central Memorial Park
Raising the Francophone banner in Calgary’s Anglo-dominated
indie music scene, these newcomers
channel the hip-swinging mid-’60s through
a garage-punk filter. The sharp-dressed quartet
has already been featured on French language
TV show Le Conquérant; it’s time their hometown
discovered their catchy retro aesthetic.
TECHNICAL KIDMAN
MONTREAL, QC
Tue 11:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Wed 10:30pm - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Feel bored by music that makes sense? Try the
electronic tantrums of Technical Kidman! Not quite
dance music, far from rigid art rock, the singular
trio are closest in feeling to having your head
smashed against a brick wall during an endorphin
rush. An abundance of drums and primal digital
manipulation is all they need to have you screaming
uncle at the point of climax.
TEETH
EDMONTON, AB
Sun 7:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
TEETH’s screeching no wave tones run in a similar
vein to Sonic Youth’s Confusion is Sex and Evol,
while also taking cues from various sludge, doom
and death metal outfits. If you love it harsh and
noisy, meet your new best friends.
TENDENCIES
EDMONTON, AB
Sat 10:15pm - The HiFi Club
This producer’s prolific Bandcamp output is full of
saccharine, side-chained summer jams that blend
filter house, vaporwave and disco. Shut down your
TERMINAL HEAD
CALGARY, ALBERTA
Sat 5:30pm - Broken City
Members of such disparate groups as PMMA,
The Nancees and No River come together for the
charged up power-pop of Terminal Head. The fivepiece
holds down a sweet spot between garage-rock
and the poppier side of punk. A live session for
CJSW is all they’ve released so far, but it makes for a
great example of their energetic dynamic.
TERRA
MEDICINE HAT, AB
Thu 9:30pm - Local 510
Infectious lo-fi scruff that flows to a new wave beat,
Terra’s breed of gothic-leaning post-punk comes with
an added layer of filthy riffage. It’s rock that blares
with the kind of fuzz-buzz immediacy and killer
hooks that will keep you howling into the night.
TIGERWING
CALGARY, AB / WINDSOR, ON
Thu 11:00pm - Commonwealth (Downstairs)
Sarah Kelly returns to Sled Island for another
dramatic turn as Tigerwing. The hyper-performative
electronic pop project is made up of Kelly’s alien,
operatic vocals with gargantuan synths and beats.
Seeing a Tigerwing performance means surrendering
to her command of sound and visuals.
TINY SHRINE
CALGARY, AB
Wed 10:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Calgary via San Francisco’s Tiny Shrine is a flickering
candle amid a great storm. No matter how
strong the winds and the rain, their fire burns on.
The band’s steady-building, full-bodied shoegaze
takes the listener on far-out sonic voyages.
TISPER
BOISE, ID
Sat 2pm - Local 510
MONTREAL, QC
Sat 5:30pm - Olympic Plaza
SUUNS bring unheard-of clarity and power to their sound, generating their
joyous noise with careful musicianship instead of rote loops and samples. An
ambulance-like siren, dragging up and down in pitch like the Doppler effect,
is done with a guitar slide. Bass grooves are made warm and inviting by their
performance on a disaffected bass guitar. A wobbling low register comes from a
tremolo-filtered keyboard. Their contemplative, forward-looking lyrics echo the
often meditative process of playing an instrument, and it shows in their lucid
performance.
A four-piece, SUUNS’ music is complex but rarely strays into cacophony. Their
music borders on post-rock but refuses to sacrifice immediacy, often employing
danceable guitar lines and soft vocals where one might expect screams and
digital distortion. Heads will bob and toes will tap to their sweltering crescendos.
TOGETHER PANGEA
SANTA CLARITA, CA
Thu 12:00am - #1 Legion (Downstairs)
Fri 9:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
There’s no need to familiarize yourself with
Burger Records or Southern California’s hand in
punk history to have fun with together PANGEA.
If you can appreciate a good riff possessed by a
murderous poltergeist or just plain love a weird
sock hop, you’ve found the band you didn’t know
you needed. together PANGEA keep it as weird, fast
and loud as it oughta be.
TOPS
MONTREAL, QC
Thu 12:30am - Broken City
TOPS’ soft rock basks in the faded neon sounds of
a time gone by. Their pop sensibilities shine while
remaining effortlessly cool, catchy, and breezy
beyond belief. The four-piece make kaleidoscopic
songs that are saccharine and sincere—the perfect
soundtrack for falling in love and making out.
to bold words and brash beats stuns listeners into
her orbit. From ‘90s dance-inspired anthems to
powerful verses laid over dancehall fusion, TT The
Artist has cut an assured niche into Baltimore rap
that both titillates and intimidates.
TUNIC
WINNIPEG, MB
Thu 3:00pm - Sloth Records
Fri 6:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
The members of tunic have played in all sorts of
Winnipeg bands (Les Jupes, Boats and Living Hour,
to name a few), but none as heavy as this one. Specializing
in deranged noise-punk, bursts of shrill
feedback-laden guitar and assaults of unsettling
bass and drums, tunic are punishing in all the
right ways. Prepare your eardrums.
TUQUES
EDMONTON, AB
Fri 12:00am - Palomino (Upstairs)
In their short lifespan, tuques have mastered the
art of making emotionally overwhelming shoegaze
that smashes into the listener like a wave crashing
onto a rocky shore. Hidden in the maelstrom are
undeniable melodies and lyrics that yearn for
human connection.
MUSIC
TOUGH AGE
VANCOUVER, BC
Fri 2:45pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Sat 6:30pm - Broken City
Inspired by Chris Knox for their latest live covers,
Tough Age know their history and use it to create
stirring, present day garage-rock. Self-described as
“culmination rock,” Tough Age write hooky tunes
while throwing calculated punches.
TRACES
MONTREAL, QC
Wed 9:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Fri 10:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Traces are a band who blend post-punk, shoegaze
and psychedelic pop into hazy watercolours.
Members come from other delightfully dreamy
bands like The Besnard Lakes, Play Guitar and Land
of Kush, so you know they’re not messing around.
Catch some fuzz at their Sled Island debut.
TROPIC HARBOUR
EDMONTON, AB
Wed 6:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Thu 7:30pm - Local 510
While the Morrissey comparisons are warranted,
Tropic Harbour’s infatuation is with utopic coastal
imagery more than any sort of doomed relationship.
Mark Berg, the bedroom pop wunderkind
behind the project, only has one EP out associated
with the moniker, but has nonetheless managed to
make waves, working echoing guitar jangles and
lush dreamland hooks to sedative heights.
TT THE ARTIST
BALTIMORE, MD
**PEACHES PICK**
Thu 10:30pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Fri 8:00pm - Theatre Junction GRAND
If you want to dance and feel empowered, TT The
Artist has got you covered. Her fearsome approach
TV UGLY
VANCOUVER, BC
Fri 2:00pm - Commonwealth (Upstairs)
Sat 9:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
Featuring members of Supermoon and Thee Ahs,
TV Ugly are pros who sound like amateurs who
sound like pros. Their summery, bratty grunge-pop
is anchored by a frantically breezy rhythm section
and Superfuzz/Bigmuff power chords, leaving singer
Alie’s naïve melodies free to wander where they
will—mostly worming their way into your ears.
T.WILLIAMS
LONDON, UK
Thu 6:45pm - Sled Island Block Party
T.Williams has worked in a lot of styles over the
course of his career producing electronic music.
Today, he’s making some of the most exhilarating
house music out there. He stacks drums tracks like
an expert Jenga player, laying them down with
maximum tension and just enough steady bass to
keep it all together.
ULTRA GASH
CALGARY, AB
Sat 9:30pm - Dickens
Ultra Gash make grimy, bellowing punk rock that
sounds like a mix of good times and bad trips. Late
‘70s England yelping, extremely lo-fi recordings
and a fast, fast pace make for a fearsome mix.
UNTRAINED ANIMALS
CALGARY, AB
Fri 10:30pm - Bamboo
Untrained Animals are a mind-bending electronic
act that eschews genre with ease. Their last proper
release III is hard to pin down, but its alluring analog
workouts and spastic melodies beg for repeat
listens. 2016 marks their sophomore showing at
Sled Island, and it’s shaping up to be a stunner.
MUSIC
VAALT
CALGARY, AB
Fri 4:00pm - Bamboo
Amid the thunderous low-end metal riffs of Calgary’s
Vaalt lies a deep lyrical potency snarled in
the voice of some doomed saint and cast into the
fiery depths of his own volition. This is one band
that nails the dramatic elements of doom metal
beloved by fans.
VALIENT THORR
CHAPEL HILL, NC
Sat 1:00am - Palomino (Downstairs)
Valient Thorr’s kinetic, driving rhythms and riffheavy
approach to rock ‘n’ roll mixes space-wizard
lyrics, late ‘70s British metal and southern rock-inspired
blues. It makes for a pretty potent cocktail
of fuel-injected mayhem and badassery.
VALISKA
CALGARY, AB
Sat 10:00pm - Bamboo
Valiska intersects the bonds between the natural
world and the metropolitan spaces we call home,
bridging elements of classical music and electronic
experiments in a decisive, fragmented fashion.
Like lush landscapes on the outskirts of a bustling
city, Valsika takes the natural and frames it from an
urban point of view.
VICE COOLER
LOS ANGELES, CA
**PEACHES PICK**
Sat 10:30pm - Flames Central
Though perhaps better known for his video and
production work behind the scenes (that video with
Peaches and Kim Gordon in the boxing ring!), Vice
Cooler also makes hot and heavy electro pop that
would fit in perfectly at either the grimiest after-hours
basement party or the top of the pop charts.
In addition to festival performances, we're pleased
to host Vice Cooler for an artist talk and Q&A on
June 25 at Theatre Junction GRAND.
VIEWMASTER
VANCOUVER, BC
Thu 1:00pm - Sloth Records
Fri 5:00pm - Broken City (Patio)
ViewMaster’s brand of rock is propulsive, poppy
and frayed around the edges. Featuring John
Johnston of Vancouver punks Slow Learners, their
distinctly danceable, raw and riff-heavy tunes are
sure to get crowds moving.
VULVA CULTURE
HALIFAX, NS
Thu 7:30pm - Tubby Dog
Sat 5:00pm - Tubby Dog
Dark, glacially paced lullabies cloaked in a pharmaceutical
haze are earmarks of Vulva Culture’s
languid atmosphere. “Hydromorphone” is the lead
track on their latest cassingle, and the name perfectly
captures the foursome’s brand of druggy slowcore
that pleads for listeners to relish in the melancholy.
WAITRESS
SASKATOON, SK
Wed 8:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Fri 3:00pm - Tubby Dog
The dreamy, majestic pop of Waitress hearkens
back to British rock just before it became “Britpop”—when
it was a danceable mélange of squarewave
synths and distorted guitars beneath wistful
melodies sung in boy-girl harmony. Waitress
make you want to grow your bangs out, don some
eyeliner and hit the town.
WAR BABY
VANCOUVER, BC
Fri - 7:30pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Enjoy some noisy, freaky, grungy punk courtesy
of War Baby! Back after appearances in 2012 and
2014, the three-piece are now armed with songs
from the Halloween 2015 release Death Sweats.
The record is a brutal, fast-paced bummer that’ll
have you embracing dank vibes in no time.
WARES
EDMONTON, AB
Wed 9:00pm - Broken City
Thu 8:00pm - Palomino (Upstairs)
Wares seriously impressed us at last year’s Sled
Island and has continued to do so in her newest
live incarnation as well as on her Missed the
Point 7”. Currently playing solo, Wares has only
grown more intense on stage, using an arsenal
of genre-spanning anthems to leave audiences
speechless.
MUSIC
THE WEIR
CALGARY, AB
Sat 3:00pm - Bamboo
With slow, heavy percussion and psychedelic guitar
riffs that bend and howl beneath severe vocals,
this Calgary quartet takes the complex dynamics
of heavy metal and the unforgiving grittiness of
sludge, and intertwines them to create a vast,
heavy sound.
WEIRD YEAR
EDMONTON, AB
Sat 10:00pm - Tubby Dog
Weird Year make discordant post-hardcore at its
best. Wailing about existence and yearning for
love, the five-piece darkly drudge up the thoughts
we’re afraid to think—mostly because they’re true.
Thankfully, those thoughts are drowned out in the
intensity of the pit.
WHOOP-SZO
GUELPH, ON
Thu 5:30pm - Local 510
Fri 3:00pm - Sloth Records
The crazed experimentalism captured by WHOOP-
Szo is reminiscent of driving wildly through a
blizzard on a Canadian highway at night. One
moment is calm and the next is out of control,
creating unpredictable sludgy crashes in the midst
of bleary-eyed hymnals.
WILLIE THRASHER & LINDA SADDLEBACK
NANAIMO, BC
Wed 11:00pm - Ship & Anchor
Born in 1948 in the Northwest Territories, Willie
Thrasher made music to help him reconnect with
his Inuvialuit culture, which he was deprived of
at a residential school. Thrasher’s lost folk-rock
tunes, which channel the AM radio vibes of Neil
Young and Gordon Lightfoot, were given a second
life in 2014 with crate-digger Kevin Howes’
archival compilation Native North America (Vol.
1). Willie is still performing memorable sets and
joins us at Sled Island with his partner Linda
Saddleback.
WILT
WINNIPEG, MB
Sat 11:00pm - #1 Legion (Upstairs)
At the end of the frozen plains stands a monolith,
a dark and imposing colossus looming over the
vast expanse of empty fields of ice. At the gates
stand Wilt, fire-breathing guardians of the steel,
heavy as a crashing planet and eyes ablaze in the
hues of molten metal.
WITCHSTONE
CALGARY, AB
Fri 6:00pm - Bamboo
Witchstone rides on massive doom riffs through
the monumental canyons of their immense
proto-metal arrangements. They seamlessly move
from harmonized sludge riffs into spaced-out,
feedback-laden sections, at once deeper than
swamp water and as far out into the cosmos as a
mystic wizard holding entire worlds aloft.
YANKEE YANKEE
CALGARY, AB
Sat 11:00pm - Bamboo
Yankee Yankee is a sonic monster climbing its
way out of your cassette player to either lull you
to sleep or eat you alive. The unpredictability of
sounds, instruments and directions undertaken
in this unburdening project will fill you with
curiosity and panic, excitement and uncertainty
all at once.
YEAR OF GLAD
MONTREAL, QC
Fri 6:00pm - Local 510 (Parking Lot)
Sun 5:30pm - Palomino (Downstairs)
Year of Glad is the cacophonous vision of mastermind
A.P. Bergeron. This experimental drone-folk
act was conceived in solitude and brought to
life by a collection of talented friends. Their last
album, Old Growth, is life-affirming post-rock
that brims with emotion and ethereality. After
a stunning performance at Sled Island in 2015,
expectations remain high.
YES WE MYSTIC
WINNIPEG, MB
Sat 5:00pm - Local 510
Their cinematic, genre-blending chamber-pop is
like the wind reflecting off lake ice. Cerebral and
cutting in equal measure, this quintet's songs
build like winter storms. Violin and cello punctuate
Adam Fuhr's dramatic vocal melodies, then
sweep them off their feet from behind as the band
drives toward a tempestuous climax.
ZAD KOKAR
STRASBOURG, FR
Wed 10:00pm - Bamboo
Fri 9:30pm - Dickens
You know how the best parts of a Hollywood
horror movie are the jump scares? Zad Kokar is a
bit like if that’s what all those movies were. That
might sell their nuance a bit short, but every note
of their electronic noise schism is packed with endorphins
that inspire eyes-covered, jaw-dropped
disbelief.
THE ZORGS
WINNIPEG, MB
Thu 12:30am - Palomino (Upstairs)
Fri 3:30pm - Broken City
Hit snooze on that alarm clock and zone out to
the slack show of pogo-punks The Zorgs. Uniting
their freewheeling surf and garage-pop chops,
healthy regard for spy film soundtracks and triple
dose of loveable Winnipeg weirdness, the band
stay true to their defining ethos of forever defying
convention.
TORTOISE
CHICAGO, IL
Fri 9:00pm - Central United Church
Continuing in the Sled Island tradition of showcasing exceptional instrumental bands,
it’s only right that post-rock pioneers Tortoise bring their grandiose cacophony to the
2016 edition of the festival.
Spiraling outward from the core duo of Doug McCombs and John Herndon, Tortoise’s
career marks a creative high point in a genre already known for wild experimentation.
Krautrock, minimalism and jazz are all touchstones, but Tortoise take them to another
place entirely. Take “Djed,” from their classic Millions Now Living Will Never Die album,
which falls into electro-acoustic abstraction after an extended session of marimba
rhythms, then into sexy after-hours downtempo electronica. It’s the sound of a band
collectively saying “Oh, there are limits to how far rock music can go? Never knew. Here,
have a easy listening song that turns into dub and then free jazz after fifteen minutes.”
Their new album The Catastrophist sees them embrace more vocals than they have
previously, while retaining the same anything-can-happen-but-it’ll-be-beautiful spirit
that made their early recordings so invigorating. Like the best of their peers, Tortoise
have always had a powerful emotional core to their music. Every note is rooted in a
human feeling, and it sets them apart from mere experimenters. Tortoise are past trial
and error: they know what works and they’re doing it.
Sled Island is dedicated to operating an environmentally responsible festival. We pride ourselves on working with festival attendees, artists, The City of Calgary
and partners to implement initiatives that make Sled Island and our community responsible environmental stewards. Sustainability is an integral part of Sled
Island fun, and we encourage all to participate!
RECYCLING AND WASTE REDUCTION
Sled Island is continually improving our waste and recycling management as well as working to reduce waste at its source. We aim to make Sled Island an event
that reuses, recycles or composts all waste. The festival diverted 95% of its waste from landfills in 2015, and we intend to do even better in 2016! Everyone can
be a part of our Green Team: sort your waste, recycling and compostables into the right bins, carry a reusable water bottle and help our awesome volunteers
keep the festival clean!
BIKES
Riding bikes is fun and, without a doubt, the best way to get around Sled Island. A big thank you to our official bike sponsor, First Calgary Financial, who makes
it possible for us to provide bike parking at our outdoor stages and many of your favourite venues. Look out for bike valet team at Olympic Plaza, who will park
your bike for you and keep it safe until you’re ready to roll out to your next show!
Our friends at Prohab Helmet Society will be riding with us again this year and working to keep your noggins safe. These lovely people will be joining us at
Olympic Plaza on June 25 to sell helmets at wallet-friendly prices. If you don’t have a helmet, or if you’re looking for a new one, come check them out.
Thanks to Calgary’s cycle tracks, biking is now easier and safer than ever. The tracks on 5th St. SW (3rd Ave. SW to 17th Ave. SW), 12th Ave. (11th St. SW to 4th
St. SE), 8th Ave. SW. (11th St. SW to Macleod Trail, excluding Stephen Ave.) and 9th Ave. SE (Macleod Trail to 4th St. SE) will take you to almost every Sled Island
venue. For even more Calgary bikeways, check out Calgary.ca
