I also have gotten the opportunity to
do several voiceover commercials
for the station which have included
the promotion of live music events
coming to town, station promotions,
holiday specials and more.
The first time I walked into the Q104
studios to record, I was incredibly
nervous.
My throat had been pretty sore
leading up to that day and, of
course, I wanted to make a good
first impression, but every word
out of my mouth was painful.
Fortunately, Kelly couldn’t have
been nicer. After retrieving a glass
of water, she helped me go through
each line one by one, and with the
utmost care.
She said to me, “Give me three or four
different ways to say each.”
Afterward, she’d give me three or
four more.
I was so impressed. How
she could come up with
that many variations of
the same sentence was
beyond me.
Kelly has such a smooth,
confident, engaging
voice. I love her style and
started really paying close
attention to her show.
It’s important that my voice
provide its own unique
sound, but still keeping in
line with the style and flow of
the station.
Q104 is hip and trendy, fun and
edgy.
As a former Radio Disney live
performer, my hosting got
quite familiar with kidappeal
– higher pitched, sunny,
ultra-upbeat, you know the drill.
When I delivered my first read,
Kelly very carefully requested I
lower my pitch.
Now I’m acutely aware of my tone
and actually try to conjure up a
little Kelly with each delivery.
Recently, I got to meet with the vice
president of programing at CBS
Radio who chatted with me about
my range and inflection.
I’m tuned into the station more
than ever now and pay such close
attention whenever one of my spots
comes on.
It’s been super cool to hear them,
but I’ve definitely been analyzing
every word.
I recently took the initiative to set
up a meeting with a speech coach
to improve my diction.
Kelly has been so wonderful and
gracious with her advice and
support, but I know that there’s a
lot that I need to do to improve on
my own.
I’m actually super excited to begin
working with my new coach, and
improving not just my sound
on the radio, but with my work
as an actress, host and general
communication with others.
So while I may not be ready to host
my own radio show, it has been
such a thrill to just be in the studio,
working hard to get my voice radio
perfect, adding some amazing new
clips to my voice reel and watching
one of the best do her thing.
Every time I’m with her I’m having
a blast and learning something new.
Who could ask for more than that?
