Building Envelope | New Scottish Standards guides from Kingspan Insulation The updated Section 6 (energy) of the Scottish Building Standards is now in force, bringing with it significantly tightened carbon emission targets. To help simplify the process of achieving compliance, Kingspan Insulation has released two guides, freely downloaded from their website, covering domestic and non-domestic buildings. Section 6 offers a great deal of flexibility providing the property meets the target emission rate and limiting fabric performance factors, which can make it difficult to identify the best route to compliance. The ‘simplifying the complex’ section provides clear advice, and recommended U-values to enable a fabric-first construction which minimises costly renewables. To help make the most of the available space, the guides also look at some of the most common insulation applications, offering a comparison of the construction thicknesses required to achieve a compliant U-value with different insulation materials, including ultra-thin Vacuum Insulation Panels. www.kingspaninsulation.co.uk/buildingregs. New brochure for Helifix Dixie micro-piles Helifix has produced a new 12 page technical brochure giving full details of its versatile, high performance, Dixie micro-piles, which are used to rapidly and cost-effectively stabilise buildings suffering from subsidence. The brochure looks at the benefits of using the innovative, simple, but extremely effective Dixie micro-pile system, such as minimal disturbance to occupants and no spoil removal, and full technical specifications are provided. The main causes of subsidence are also examined and how, following detailed investigations, appropriate repairs are designed based on the damage, the weight of the individual property and the local ground conditions. A step by step installation process is included in the new literature, complementing Helifix’s recently launched animation on the micro-pile system. Backed by International Code Council (ICC) certification and conformance to AC358, the International Standard for helical foundation underpinning systems, these well proven and technically advanced micro-piles are the ideal solution for the problem of foundation settlement. www.helifix.co.uk CMS helps deliver flats transformation Leading window, door and curtain walling manufacturer and installer CMS Window Systems has delivered an extensive housing upgrade programme at the 50-year old Broomhead Flats in Dunfermline. The building fabric of the 216 properties, housed within three 12-storey blocks, has been brought up to a high thermal standard that primarily involved the £5.1m CMS contract for the replacement of windows, doors and curtain walling, application of EWI and replacing balconies. Every flat now benefits from A-rated, highly insulating windows, and CMS also manufactured and installed aluminium curtain walling which spans up to eleven floors on each block, enclosing all communal walkways – equating to more than 2,000m2 of curtain walling. A third component to the structural elements was the replacement of 1,700m2 of balcony enclosures.
