Heating & Ventilation | Air source energy gains critical mass Juliet Woodcock considers the potential of a new addition to Mitsubishi Electric’s already successful range of air source heat pumps. The heating and renewables industry has long accepted that the best efficiencies are to be gained from heat pumps if they kept running for long periods, preferably with the system achieving a large delta T between flow and return temperatures. 38 Now, though, the UK’s largest supplier of air source technology to the domestic market has introduced a new concept to its range which virtually guarantees optimum performance within well insulated properties; and which offers developers a financially attractive alternative to laying in gas mains across sites where none exists. “We believe that air source heat pumps are the only mainstream technology that can be rolled out throughout the UK due to a wide range of property types – the other technologies have certain challenges.” Jordan Jeewood, Ecodan Technical Expert Mitsubishi Electric has already secured a dominant share of the UK market for air source heat pumps with its range of Ecodan domestic and commercial scale units, but now the QUHZ model adds the extra dimension of a carefully matched thermal store, with optimized control logic boosting efficiency. And while it is primarily aimed at the 70% of new-builds where ‘Fabric First’ design cuts space heating loads to less than that of the hot water demand, similarly insulated refurbishments could also benefit from the new model’s multiple benefits. In terms of commercial logic, it is difficult to dispute Mitsubishi Electric’s assessment of the way the housing market is developing which, despite the ditching of the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 ambition, still sees developers working to the very tight energy demands within Part L. Meanwhile, other alternative such as ground source heat pumps, biomass or communal CHP can have present punishing capital costs as well as technical challenges. Jordan Jeewood, Ecodan technical expert for the company, explained: “What is needed is a new way of delivering energy efficient heating and hot water. We have engineered the Ecodan QUHZ monobloc system to meet this need by providing exceptionally high efficiency in the production of hot water, along with renewable space heating for the home”. Significantly from the specifier’s point of view, the QUHZ is suitable for most sizes of dwelling from a starter home or city flat up to a four bed detached with multiple bathrooms. Essentially a zone valve either directs flow from the monobloc unit to the property’s heating circuit, but prioritizes keeping the 200 litre glycol filled thermal store at close to 700 centigrade. Then when a tap is opened, mains water passes through the store’s plate heat exchanger to be instantaneously heated. Like its predecessors, the Ecodan QUHZ is MCS approved and will appear fully familiar to the manufacturer’s nationwide network of welltrained installers. The thermal store, meanwhile, comes as a packaged unit with the minimum of connections to make, and the user interface controls have been made as simple as possible. The building occupants just have to choose when they want their heating to be on and at what level. The QUHZ launch coincided with the climate conference in Paris where the world’s politicians were lining up to agonize about cutting CO2 emissions. Ironically though, the new Ecodan uses carbon dioxide as its refrigerant in order to achieve the high delta T that ensures the enhanced efficiency of the system. Using small amounts of a toxic substance to cure a worse malady has a ‘homeopathic’ resonance to it. Maintenance, though, will be straightforward while installers can call on the 24/7 technical support offered by the manufacturer. And thanks to Mitsubishi Electric’s MEL Cloud wi-fi technology, it is even possible to allow the company’s own engineers to oversee and fine tune the way units are performing. : QUHZ Outdoor Unit Jordan Jeewood reflected: “We believe that air source heat pumps are the only mainstream technology that can be rolled out throughout the UK due to a wide range of property types – the other technologies have certain challenges.”
