Dear Reader,
What a great start to 2016 for the construction industry,
especially the news that the Government is releasing public land
to build 60,000 homes over five years – see the full article in this
issue of the magazine, entitled Welcome boost for building.
Although the UK’s skills shortage will be a problem if we
continue to opt for traditional build rather than modern
methods of construction, whereby building elements are
produced in the factory environment and thus short circuit the
need for labour intensive operations on site – walls, floors and
other aspects of the building envelope are covered in this
edition of R&R, many of which will have been manufactured
offsite.
One also hopes that the Government’s scheme to introduce
200,000 public sector apprenticeships will further help the
construction industry, as well as encourage the private sector to
invest more in training schemes. Hopefully cutting the total of
some one million NEETs. We would certainly welcome any news
stories from readers and advertisers on how the initiative is likely
to impact on their businesses over the coming months, as many
fear the idea of a levy is going to do little to close the skills gap.
